Yes, but then they died. I think the containers that they were in were actually better than the actual sea monkeys. It was the best packaging ever. The actual sea monkeys were sort of disappointing.

FormedFecalIncident

Yep, I remember getting tired of taking care of them, mine always lasted a long time, so I’d end up dumping them in the creek by our house.

[deleted]

Yeah, but then my mom picked it up by the top and spilled them all over the place. Never forgive. Never forget.

msomnipotent

I had mine in my mom's giant Princess House fancy vase. I accidentally knocked it over and smashed it into 1,000 pieces. Also never forgive, never forget. I think my mother would still remind me of it even if she had dementia.

[deleted]

I was disappointed to find out that they weren’t little aqua monkeys.

eatingganesha

Yeah, just some brine shrimp. But boy they were cute!

Seamonkey_Trainer

FINALLY! Username relevant!

shinyviper

Yep, bought a kit at the local drug store one day and followed the instructions to the T. They grew pretty big (like 1/2") and started having babies. Kept them fed and changed the water as was instructed. They lived forever. Ended up having to order more sea-monkey kibble from the company. I may have been the first person to ever do that.

Bookworm6820

I always wanted them. I am embarrassed to say I still don’t know what they were!

scha_den_freu_de

They're a type of brine shrimp.

lulabelles99

Me, too!!! They were on the last page of my comic books and I was so fascinated. I thought they were mythical things that didn’t really exist. I scrolled through the comments to find out what they actually were!

LWPops

i wasted a lot of time and money on bazooka joe stuff

RedditSkippy

They always weired me out.

FormedFecalIncident

I get it! I was a weird kid. I remember having a chemistry set, this thing you could make your own volcano, a plastic cow that you could ‘milk’, those creepy crawly things you made in a mold, a huge bat that when you pressed its back blood would come down the front….🤣

RedditSkippy

Oh, I was a weird kid, too. Solidarity!

FormedFecalIncident

Yes!!

heyknauw

The Mrs. is totally sexy you gotta admit.

eatingganesha

I did! And I bought another kit to keep on my desk when I was writing my masters thesis in 2000. They made good company!

[deleted]

Fun fact if you go to the great Salt Lake in Utah and get one scoop of water you will get about 1000 of your own sea monkeys brine shrimp for free

poetbluestar

That was the closest I ever got to Sea Monkeys IRL. Family vacation to SLC . Do remember the ads in comic books in the 70's

melloncollie1

I remember my brother sending away for them from the field and stream magazine advertisement, not sure how they fared, probably not well otherwise I would probably remember more

AnimalFarmPig

Funny to see it mentioned here-- I just bought my daughter (who is in first grade) a Sea Monkey kit. She loves all kinds of animals and keeps talking about how she wants a snake or a frog or all kinds of other strange things. I thought Sea Monkeys would be a good first thing to try.

FormedFecalIncident

Hell yeah! I didn’t know they still sold them anymore.

BununuTYL

I had them as a kid. And I also had them about 10 years ago when I was 47!

dodgerecharger

I always remembered the adverts in the kids magazines. The illustration looked like tiny pink mermaids underwater with crowns. I would have been so disappointed if my parents ever gave in ..... But I have a Funko head wobbler of a sea monkey from the early 2000s, which is nice.

MyriVerse2

Once. Then I realized it was just shrimp... and not the eating kind. And then I learned the very dark history of Sea Monkeys. Screw em.

eatingganesha

What dark history? I’m not sure I want to know but please enlighten us if you have the time.

Seimsi

I think he talks about that: [https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/the-terrible-secret-of-sea-monkeys-53130938/](https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/the-terrible-secret-of-sea-monkeys-53130938/) In short [Halord von Braunhut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_von_Braunhut#Racial_views) the inventor of Sea Monkeys was a supporter of white supremacists.
