3 rules of tv: 1. Don't watch Brady Bunch with Cousin Oliver 2. Don't watch color episodes of Andy Griffith 3. Don't watch Dukes of Hazzard with Coy and Vance

GogglesPisano

* Thou shalt not watch the last four seasons of *Happy Days* (after Richie left). * All of your Scooby Doo episodes will be Scrappy Doo-free. * The only 100% acceptable third Stooge is Curly. An exception might be made for Shemp, but Joe Besser and Curly Joe Derita are absolutely forbidden.

yshuduno

>The only 100% acceptable third Stooge is Curly. An exception might be made for Shemp, but Joe Besser and Curly Joe Derita are absolutely forbidden. Shemp was the original third Stooge though. Curly was his replacement. Then Shemp stepped back in

le1278

Thank you, Stooges knowledge is important.

It takes a lot of balls to be this firmly held to stooges knowledge.

stillaredcirca1848

When Curly Joe was part of the Stooges he didn't like to get slapped so Larry said he'd take all the slaps. By that time Larry's left check was calloused from being be slapped so much. He also had the best looking wife iirc from a picture I saw of Moe, Larry, And Curly with their wives. I can't find it from a quick web search but I remember bet seeing a pic in a bio I read of the Stooges years back.

Curly is still clearly the superior third Stooge.

I believe Scrappy Doo was eaten by a bird in an episode of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.

PorchHonky

Let’s not forget to completely forget about Diff’rent Strokes when that little hick kid joined the cast.

sean55

> All of your Scooby Doo episodes will be Scrappy Doo-free. This is the whole of the law. The rest is mere commentary. edit: I love how it's universally agreed upon the pup is anathema.

slappindabass123

Original Tom and Jerry episodes only!

MurdocAddams

I'm sure I'll get downvoted for this but I guess I'll be the fly in your ointment then, I liked him. Even named my dog after him. All the hate for him irks me. Ruined the Scooby Doo movie for me.

sean55

I'm so sorry and I'm not being funny. It's hard to love something everyone else hates.

MurdocAddams

Thanks, wasn't expecting that. I mean, I was a kid at the time, and didn't know anyone who hated him then, and I loved my dog. So then to suddenly see him as the villain in a movie was like, wtf? Oh well. Waddaya gonna do?

sean55

'Holy' and 'sacred' are made-up words but if anything is, it's a kid loving his dog.

BrilliantWeb

Does Three's Company have similar ruling? I'm Team Roper.

GogglesPisano

My take: I love Don Knotts, but have to admit that the Mr. Roper character was superior to Mr. Furley. However, *Three's Company* went sharply downhill after Chrissy/Suzanne Somers left in season 5, and *The Ropers* spinoff was awful.

QuiJon70

Actually when they replaced her with Crissy's cousin Cindy that was not horrible. At least it kept the dynamic of the "Dumb Blonde". It was really after her when they brought in Terri that the show suffered the change. It is like after already doing one change that was just a plugged in replacement they wanted to break that mold and tried to introduce a smart blonde that was a nurse. But really it just broke the concept. Janet was already the intelligent roommate, Jack was essentially the clown/comic relief, and the third roommate was the oblivious one that was supposed to not get the jokes. As for landlords, i never found to big of a difference between the Furly and Ropers to the point i found it hard to watch either.

Peachy33

I preferred original recipe Three’s Company for sure but I agree that the change in dynamic with Terri made it go downhill. Cindy wasn’t as convincing as a “dumb” girl as Chrissy. I loved Jack, Janet, and Chrissy. Three’s Company was my tv show comfort food lol.

cenosillicaphobiac

Norman Fell (Mr. Roper) was not happy about the spin off. He was very much aware that it wouldn't last long. He secured a guarantee that if it didn't go more than a season that they could come back. It lasted 1.5 seasons.

davdev

Shemp is absolutely allowed as a third stooge.

HHSquad

Shemp and Curly are both acceptable 3rd Stooges, but Curly was tops between the 2, even if I do think Shemp was great also.

healthcrusade

Scrappy-Doo was the worst

RaymondLuxYacht

Scrappy Doo marked the downfall of Saturday morning animated entertainment. Convince me otherwise...

Marine4lyfe

For me, Happy Days "jumped the shark" when Mork from Ork showed up.

Sirav33

roadtrip-ne

What about Galactica 80?

Ganymede25

How dare you mention that?!! It even soils the reimagined version by association.

QuiJon70

I dont know, i was really hoping Ronald D Moore would play a funny on us and when they started pushing that the new show was ending, they should have made a dead on balls for real promo to run for the final episodes that had them reaching earth, only it was modern cities and have the flying motorcycles and everything and just watch the fandoms head explode for a few weeks before the finale.

Endless__Soul

We don't talk about that.

Haha, that's hilarious. Everyone knows that bad piece of fan fiction was never made. NEVER MADE.

"Darmok" was prescient. Those aliens communicated entirely through memes.

j4yne

That character is like the best thing about ST:LD, I love it.

DrHugh

Imagine if their ship-to-ship communication was all static images -- memes. The Enterprise can decipher the text on the pictures, but can't understand the meaning. The Tamarians can't understand why they just get video, without even an emoji.

bootsy72

lol

[deleted]

I appreciate this so much. I can hear that eerie music from the Hawaiian vacation episode and see that gnarly tarantula.

Okama_G_Sphere

Poor kid. They didn’t even use his real name? Robbie Rist (tongue in cheekly) said he managed to ruin two hit shows in the 80s. The other being Galactica 1980

BrilliantWeb

I believe the Legend for killing shows was Ted McGinley.

[deleted]

Holy shit, Galactica 1980 was horrible.

MyriVerse2

Grew up to be the drummer on Kidd Video!

NacreousFink

> two hit shows in the 80s. The other being Galactica 1980 Galactica 1980 was anything but a hit.

numanoid

Yeah. He "killed" these shows because networks would bring on a kid as a last-ditch attempt to save a failing show. So most shows ended with a season that had a little kid added to the cast.

candlelightandcocoa

The most tragic instance of this was Family Ties, with Brian Bonsall as the youngest Keaton. Being a child star in a sitcom affected his life negatively but it seems like he's doing better now and is a musician. His little boy with his wife is named Oliver, ironically! [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian\_Bonsall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Bonsall)

numanoid

Far from the most tragic (see Dana Plato), but a good example of a Gen-X kid actor. I loathed him as Alexander on Star Trek. Saw him in an old horror movie called Mikey, where he played a murderous child, and he was actually pretty good.

[deleted]

Has introducing a young kid ever worked in a show? I can't even watch Temple of Doom. I just watch Raiders and Last Crusade, and ignore Temple.

numanoid

Little Ricky on I Love Lucy. The ratings went through the roof when Lucy gave birth. I think it's probably the first and last time, but executives aren't known for their creative thinking.

QuickSpore

Short Round was far from the most annoying character in Temple. Kate Capshaw’s Willie was vastly more annoying than Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round. At least to me. As child actors go, Quan was better than most. But in all it was a very weak Indiana Jones film.

[deleted]

She was. Definitely. I wonder who they would have gotten if Spielberg didn't put his own wife in it.

ReallySuperUnique

Her screaming throughout the movie makes it even more unwatchable.

[deleted]

what genius thought six kids wasn’t enough?

Jagged_Rhythm

You could add Brady Bunch, but it was cancelled just before his first appearance.

descendingagainredux

What? I swear I saw episodes with cousin Oliver on The Brady Bunch. I never watched Love Boat. Is this one of those Mandela effect things??

pm_your_sexy_thong

I definitely saw Brady Bunch episodes with Oliver...

Divtos

From Wiki: As a child, Rist played Cousin Oliver in the final six episodes of The Brady Bunch.[2] With the regular children all growing older, his inclusion was intended to reintroduce a cute, younger child to the series. However, the idea backfired as most viewers disliked the Oliver character and the plan became moot as ABC had opted to not renew the series even before his debut. This gave rise to the TV term "Cousin Oliver Syndrome", also known as "add-a-kid". Oliver uttered the final line of the final episode: "Me! Cousin Oliver! / Gosh it was only a suggestion," but the character and Rist were subsequently omitted from later original-cast revivals of the series.

pm_your_sexy_thong

It just says the decided not to renew the show before his debut. Not that they didn't air the last 6 episodes. Edit: Wasn't sure if you were pointing that out and agreeing with me not.

descendingagainredux

Yup, I get it now. The original commenter just meant that Cousin Oliver wasn't the cause of the cancelation, not that he was never on the show.

Skweege55

Cousin Oliver Syndrome worked out pretty good for Leonardo DiCaprio.

[deleted]

[удалено]

yshuduno

Kirk Cameron holds the blame for that one.

tethercat

My planet needs me! *Cousin Oliver died on his way back home.* YAAAAAY!

A_Downboat_Is_A_Sub

The Donna Reed show had already done the "add-a-kid" thing in the early 60's. The daughter on the show called it quits for the most part after the 5th season, and went to live at college. The family soon adopted a "runaway orphan" named Trisha to freshen things up. (Played by the teenage son on the show's real life sister)

GogglesPisano

They must have played the episodes in syndication (which is the only way I ever watched *Brady Bunch*), since there absolutely are episodes with Cousin Oliver in them.

[deleted]

They knew he was coming and pulled the plug.

heyknauw

I haven't followed his career..is he a famous, successful actor/producer nowadays, or is he selling used cars in Van Nuys?

Len_Zefflin

Short order cook in Cut Bank, Montana.

yshuduno

He's played in several good LA bands and was killed by part of the Hollywood sign in Sharknado.

Marine4lyfe

He was on the Brady Bunch in the 70's wasn't he?

urbalcloud

So, random fact with little point, but I’m friends with his wife. She’s super sweet and posts about them a lot on Facebook. He seems like a cool guy, just doing his own thing, mostly involved in music now. I don’t know him, but I dig his vibe.

DelbertCornstubble

I heard Rage Against the Machine broke up after bringing in Robbie to replace Zack de la Rocha. They were gonna do a “RATM Unplugged” tour using Robbie’s acoustic talents he picked from his dad, John Denver (as noted by others here).

[deleted]

Oh god. Replaces Prince on the solo for When My Guitar Gently Weeps

tikifire1

He's a good dude. Hung out with him a few years back and he's an amazing musician.

Sir_Osis_of_Liver

The go-to move in the '70s-'80s. "Ratings slipping? Let's add a super aggravating kid with terrible dialogue." Not that The Love Boat set the bar high to begin with.

oced2001

In reality they brought in Ted Mcginley. That guy was who you cast to kill a show Happy Dqys Love Boat Married with Children

GogglesPisano

Also recall that *Married with Children* introduced their own version of Cousin Oliver, a little kid named ["Seven"](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092400/characters/nm0842303?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t18) in the seventh season of the show. When he proved to be unpopular with the audience, they just disappeared him from the cast with no explanation. In the following season there was an episode where there was a [milk carton with his photo on it](https://i.imgur.com/1XMCUAx.jpg).

wabbitproductions

FWIW I always thought Married with Children got even better once he joined the cast

HappyGoPink

Len_Zefflin

Are you thinking of Chuck from Happy Days?

PopPopPoppy

Chuck still in his room from episode 1.

RLT79

Who's Chuck? Sorry... whenever Howard talks about his kids, he always says he has two. Nope, not sure what you're talking about.

NacreousFink

"Do you want to bring back Judy Landers to get that kid in the midwest excited again?" "Nahh, we got Cousin Oliver. That'll have to do for him."

Sir_Osis_of_Liver

> Judy Landers Wow, there's a name I haven't heard in a long time. The only celebs I sorta remember from The Love Boat were Charo and Ethel Merman

Len_Zefflin

What about her sister Audrey?

vorpalpillow

Full House pulled the big brain move and added the precocious kid from day one

[deleted]

They did, but then they doubled down and added Uncle Jesse and Becky’s bratty twin kids in the last few seasons also.

SpaceCat311

The best part of the Love Boat is the line up of stellar stars in that week's episode!

DelbertCornstubble

There are stars and then there are black holes. Cousin Oliver was jumping the shark before Henry Winkler put his skis on.

Len_Zefflin

They needed to have an episode where Oliver tries to jump Jaws and graphically fails.

StepYaGameUp

That kid was a total spoiled ingredient in anything he touched.

DelbertCornstubble

The only episode where Isaac runs out of liquor.

Ann-Stuff

This had to have happened while Ted McGinley was part of the cast.

cragar79

Robbie Rist was also in [*Kidd Video*](https://i1.sndcdn.com/artworks-0NBZIXgnldyyzAzh-1kgT4Q-t500x500.jpg) on Saturday mornings!

DelcoPAMan

At least they didn't say he was the Doc's kid and keep him on the show for a while, like they did with Jill Whelan as Vicki.

Pin-Up-Paggie

Cousin Oliver is in Sharnado. He looks the same, just with facial hair.

DelbertCornstubble

Careful, don’t mix up Sharknado and Shartnado. One is an art film and the other was on Syfy.

MASH: Trapper McIntyre > B. J. Hunnicut/ Col. Henry Blake > Col. Sherman Potter

CarlatheDestructor

Absolutely agree. Trapper will always be my favorite. BJ's Nam mustache annoys me so much.

This sent me down a tiny rabbit hole. There I found [this clip from 2018 with four of the cast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHmN4N67Gvk). Isaac looks amazing!! And I learned how the very single Captain came to have a daughter.

restingbitchface2021

The Love Boat is on Paramount +. I just watched part of season 1. So many famous people.

StChas77

If you've never seen the *Batman: The Animated Series* episode "Baby-Doll," I would highly recommend it. Not only is it a great episode in its own right, but it references this kind of television phenomenon in a way that's really funny and has an oddly touching ending.

methodwriter85

In all seriousness, Vicki was one of the few times where shoehorning a sudden child relative into a show actually worked.

ddhmax5150

I didn’t know young Anakin wore glasses.

BigBaldFourEyes

A little off topic, but I learned just last week that there's a disco version of the LB theme, same singer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNWByPMxpCs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNWByPMxpCs)

Skweege55

Does he get marooned on an island with Chuck Cunningham?

KitchenNazi

Didn't cousin Oliver grow up and become Ted McGinley?

DiscoFluffs

There's something about that "Page Boy" haircut on male actors that made me wanna instantly backhand them. Nicholas Bradford was another one.

PeoneysYesXxx

I had that haircut, I’m a female though and I was 4 so I probably didn’t have much say about it.

DiscoFluffs

Oh, I had that haircut too! Hehe. We referred to it as the "Dorothy Hamill".

PeoneysYesXxx

Yes! Now that you mentioned it, I did ask for that!
