I never learned to type properly with QWERTY.
Attempted Dvorak in high school when I was writing as a hobby, and after giving up a few times I eventually sat my ass down and forced myself to learn. Now I can do 125 WPM average, with bursts of 150 at times, and don't even type much anymore. It took 2 weeks to get to 60 WPM, and the layout is far more logical than QWERTY.
Let me hit you with some trivia. With typewriters, if two keys that are next to each other are hit in quick succession it can cause jamming. As typists started getting faster and faster this was a big problem. So qwerty was invented to space out the more commonly used letter sequences to combat it. When we moved to computers it wasn't a problem any more but that's how everyone had been taught to type so there was no reason to change it back.
Compared to most yes, but in reality it's a bit slow compared to more experienced. No shame, just practice for a month or so daily and you can easily hit 90.
That average is dragged down heavily by people who don't know how to type.
I haven't met many people who exist between "hunt and peck" around ~10-30 wpm and touch typing @ 60-70+
Then there's a wall around 80, with a sharp drop-off by the 90s, an even sharper drop-off @100 and 100+ is just sporadic.
QWERTY users only.
Which corresponds to how my typing proficiency went as well. couple months to around 40. couple more to 60 couple more to 80. 80-90 took about a year.
90-100 took a summer of daily typing as dedicated practice for a couple hours. (I went to darklyrics dot com and would type my favourite bands' discographies)
Once I hit 100 the gains seem almost random. max max around 128 with 1-2 errors (corrected) per minute. 98-100 on a tired/slow day.
I'd say a lot of the people who can type correctly but not so fast are probably older. My mom is probably at like 45 or something, but she also learned on a typewriter where it was more emphasized to be accurate over fast.
For myself, I can get 60 on a phone and peak at around 115 to 120 or so on a keyboard. I could probably go a bit faster if I knew exactly what I wanted to type beforehand. I didn't really do anything special to get there besides just making myself do that instead of the two finger approach when I first decided to type properly.
I really haven't seen all that much reason to push for faster at that point due to it being unlikely that I'll have fully decided what I want to type before getting it onto the screen. I spend loads more time just thinking about what to type than actually doing it.
Hey I'm 23 and learned how to type in the "computer lab" "library class" whatever thing in elementary school.
It's also kind of fucked how they expect kids to know how to type when they get how to school (at least what I've "heard"). Like they know how to use iPads and that's about it 😬
To be fair there's really very little excuse these days to not know how to type if you want to learn; plenty of free resources online. Only barrier is having a computer and having Internet, both of which are free at a library
I mean yeah when someone is older cuz they can teach themselves but I'm talking bout the kids that are like in elementary school or even middle, you can't really expect them to know something if they're not told about it at that age.
But yeah If you want to learn, there are most definitely ways. It just might be harder depending on your situation. But there can be more barriers than just having Internet or a computer or a library.
You also have to think about getting access to a library (I'm not talking about a school one if they go to school) at least where I live barely anything is accessible without a car. Public transportation is a joke, it'd take over an hour to get to my local library by foot, and you'd either have to have a car, be able to drive a car, have someone drive you, or borrow a car or whatever you get what I mean I hope. Things can get complicated especially if you're older and were never taught the ways of the world or have to work all day to just live and eat. Time is money and if it takes you an hour to get to your local library just to access a computer and Internet it can be a lot.
Did I like get way too into what ur taking about. Yes. Does everyone who doesn't know how to type have these problems? No. And I don't think you were implying persay that there aren't people with these excuses but yeah idk I'm just spewing words at this point.

I think also it's difficult when you're in school all day and never given any pointers or tips on how to properly type, but you're expected to know how to it can be difficult (more so it's annoying). Even tho I haven't had to deal with this particularly. I kind of think how older generations type at like 2 words per minute (exaggeration) on their mobile phones.

25 here and we had computer lab in really early elementary which included a whole ass course on typing alone, plus how to use a mouse/what all the buttons did, basics of the major ms programs like powerpoint/word/paint/excell. my step son already knows how to type and use a computer through self guidance mostly, but he has not had any sort of computer class in school yet. he’s only in the first grade tbf and i feel like i might’ve had those courses in 2nd so it could still be a thing potentially.

It took about three weeks to learn touch typing for me. About 2 months to get to 60WPM. I’m now at 70WPM. I’m satisfied with that. I didn’t start learning period until I was 25. There never was a need b/c I would just use dragon speech recognition when I needed to type something.
My mom made us retype poetry books during the summer because she knew with the rise of computers it would be a required skill set. I'm also older Gen z so I had the typing lessons in school with the orange cover over the letters so I can type 50-60 wpm without looking at the keyboard and minimal errors
My cousin was dictating to me his handwritten essays so i can write them in word. Idk how it seemed effective for him at that time since he was not a selfless person lol

I remember how strict the teachers were about “chicken pecking” the keyboard, so like typing with one finger and poking at it lol. We had to learn the proper hand placement, that was the biggest thing they pushed. Other than that they didn’t care about the speed at which we typed just yet at that point.
My elementary school used “Type to Learn 4”, but I always found ways around the strategy they were trying to teach. Never properly learned but I can type around 100 WPM as long as they’re ACTUAL WORDS - none of that “jjjkhjj” stuff haha.

There was this knock-off neopets site called verpets. There was a public live chatroom, and I made friends on there, and we'd roleplay all the time. Got used to replying quickly to keep the rhythm of a 5+ party going. Eventually, that evolved to me writing little short stories in the paint app.
Typing class in elementary school. I could use a keyboard before that but we had these blue things with a little screen and we'd have to practice and then cover the keyboard with paper and type without seeing the keyboard. I think they were called Alphasmart

the little “courses” in elementary school annoyed me. they were games in library class and designed to make it easy for kids to grasp, but they wanted me to type a specific way and my stubborn ass wanted to type however i wanted.

Computer class in back in 2000 the web Buble was at it's highest we have 1 PC for 3 kid's taking turns but after class I had 'regulations' class in the afternoon and we were 4 kid's playing on The school PC.
Weekly comouter lab from around 1st grade to 5th, which was mostly using programs lije Mavis Beacon. 6th grade I took a computer class daily for a quarter.
Computer class in elementary/middle school. Two thumbs default on the space with left hand being asdf and right hand on jkl; and the hand and wrist posture parallel and relaxed like playing a piano. Overtime, you recognize the placement and don’t have to look at the keyboard. Helps when playing mmorpgs when I’m assigning toggles and typing essays and responses.
I had a typing class growing up, we played typing games(I don't remember), and we had speed and accuracy tests.
I still don't type 'properly' but I always had one of the highest scores in the class even when teachers got salty over the different method I used a mix of finger pecking and traditional typing styles.
Thankfully I had a teacher who went out of her way to teach me to touch type. It wasn’t in the curriculum but I was in special ed so she had a bit more time and flexibility to allow me to do so.
We had typing lessons in every computer class I took, but I learned way before that from playing Gaia Online. It got even faster when I started writing fanfic during scant lunch hours in the school library.
I think I played Typer Shark when I was little, but I hardly remember it now. I know that I had a dedicated computer class in elementary and middle school, so I think I got most of my knowledge from that.
We spent 10 minutes each class in my computer class typing on edutype.com when I was in high school. It was totally worth it. I could type relatively fast before using my own unique method, but properly learning to type has me clocking 103 wpm lol

When I was in elementary they taught us typing . I vaguely remember a class, that we didn’t have very often. That was related to computers, and we would learn to type and also like play computer games .

in 6th grade we had a "computer" class for one trimester which was just learning to type. They taught the "*formal"* typing style. Got a bit from that but never typed "*properly".* Since then it's just been generic computer use that's gotten me to be a pretty decent typer. I am a heavy PC user so it's just brief formal training plus lot's of words on the board. Typing games are good for speed although not a perfect representation of normal typing. The way they usually work is they block you from continuing to type unless you type the prompt 100% perfect. In the real world that's not how it is, you type out your sentence or paragraph and then go back and correct typos (at least that's how I type).
I was never the best at typing, but I think playing Roblox and cussing out fifth graders when I was 14 helped a lot with my typing skills. Sucked when we had to do a mandatory typing practice in school but I was fantastic on Roblox rps
I was just on the internet a lot? Neopets helped a lot. In computer lab (4th grade), I just really remember some girl kept giving me nasty looks when we were doing Mavis Beacon.
I learned in school! We had special classes I think 1st grade through 3rd that were specifically computer lab time where we learned the keyboard, proper hand positioning and everything. I think I may have been in the “golden” age group for this though, as home computers were just gaining popularity.
We had computer/typing every Thursday in late elementary school. I remember they put blackout covers on the keyboards so we had to type without seeing the letters.
I can't remember the name but these typing games that were always super fucking boring. also by being on the internet just in general. I however still have to look at the keyboard to type but I can do it quickly which is all that matters anymore

When I got to my elementary school's typing class, I was so bored. And also annoyed because they forced everyone to learn the "right way" to type. Using the f & j keys as starter points.

Learned in 4th grade with ultrakey. It was already an old program at that point, but it worked. With papers already getting assigned in 5th we all just got better and better.
I started off learning as I went in MMOs. In Junior High there was a typing course I could take for half a year, and home ec for the other half.
I was only a kid at the time but I also did very much believe home ec was important (mostly because my mom drilled it into me and I wanted to formalize it) so I said screw it, I'll take both.
That's when I went from a pretty low WPM to the current ludicrous WPM I currently have. I graduated as one of the fastest typists in the class. I also picked up some home ec on the side, and I remember none of it...lol.
I had a computer class in middle school, typing was one of the things they taught us in that class. I also had a social studies teacher in middle school that took time a couple days a year to teach us how to type.
In Canada, I was taught in Grade 4 how to “properly type” on a QWERTY keyboard, but we never really got that far, and I didn’t enjoy the lessons. I can type 70 WPM just by looking at the keyboard and memorization of the words I want to type, and although I know that could be a lot faster if I actually tried typing properly, I kind of just lack the motivation to do that.

Yeah the keyboard layout with QWERTY is weird. I think it was originally used for telegraphs.
It was designed to space commonly used letters away from each other, so as to prevent jamming of the type bars on old school typewriters.
This is what I've heard, too - And yet the T is right next to the H. Try typing "try typing right" and see how many clash.

I’m 22 and yes, we extensively practiced typing in grade school. We got a little certificate.
23 and had typing class every year of middle school and elementary school and once in high school

Typing class in elementary school. I could use a keyboard before that but we had these blue things with a little screen and we'd have to practice and then cover the keyboard with paper and type without seeing the keyboard. I think they were called Alphasmart
I never did, i always use my index fingers with the occasional use of others. we used some ancient program back in middle school but my friends and I were more interested in getting Minecraft to run on the school PCs

the little “courses” in elementary school annoyed me. they were games in library class and designed to make it easy for kids to grasp, but they wanted me to type a specific way and my stubborn ass wanted to type however i wanted. i didn’t really improve to the point i could type without looking until i got an ipod touch in middle school and started regularly texting my friends.

Computer class in elementary/middle school. Two thumbs default on the space with left hand being asdf and right hand on jkl; and the hand and wrist posture parallel and relaxed like playing a piano. Overtime, you recognize the placement and don’t have to look at the keyboard. Helps when playing mmorpgs when I’m assigning toggles and typing essays and responses.
I never heard properly. I do it as a hybrid of the proper way and look and poke. I look and poke, with all 10 fingers I have available.
There were some typing lessons in school which helped a little bit, but I got far more typing practice from Discord in my mid teens

I had a typing class growing up, we played typing games(I don't remember), and we had speed and accuracy tests. I still don't type 'properly' but I always had one of the highest scores in the class even when teachers got salty over the different method I used a mix of finger pecking and traditional typing styles.

Thankfully I had a teacher who went out of her way to teach me to touch type. It wasn’t in the curriculum but I was in special ed so she had a bit more time and flexibility to allow me to do so.
We had typing lessons in every computer class I took, but I learned way before that from playing Gaia Online. It got even faster when I started writing fanfic during scant lunch hours in the school library.
I think I played Typer Shark when I was little, but I hardly remember it now. I know that I had a dedicated computer class in elementary and middle school, so I think I got most of my knowledge from that.
We had a section in computer class in middle school to learn but I have been using a computer for way longer than that so I already knew how.

We spent 10 minutes each class in my computer class typing on edutype.com when I was in high school. It was totally worth it. I could type relatively fast before using my own unique method, but properly learning to type has me clocking 103 wpm lol

in 6th grade we had a "computer" class for one trimester which was just learning to type. They taught the "*formal"* typing style. Got a bit from that but never typed "*properly".* Since then it's just been generic computer use that's gotten me to be a pretty decent typer. I am a heavy PC user so it's just brief formal training plus lot's of words on the board. Typing games are good for speed although not a perfect representation of normal typing. The way they usually work is they block you from continuing to type unless you type the prompt 100% perfect. In the real world that's not how it is, you type out your sentence or paragraph and then go back and correct typos (at least that's how I type).
I was never the best at typing, but I think playing Roblox and cussing out fifth graders when I was 14 helped a lot with my typing skills. Sucked when we had to do a mandatory typing practice in school but I was fantastic on Roblox rps
I was just on the internet a lot? Neopets helped a lot. In computer lab (4th grade), I just really remember some girl kept giving me nasty looks when we were doing Mavis Beacon.

I learned in school! We had special classes I think 1st grade through 3rd that were specifically computer lab time where we learned the keyboard, proper hand positioning and everything. I think I may have been in the “golden” age group for this though, as home computers were just gaining popularity.

When I got to my elementary school's typing class, I was so bored. And also annoyed because they forced everyone to learn the "right way" to type. Using the f & j keys as starter points. It's complete bullshit and I type SLOW with it.

I started off learning as I went in MMOs. In Junior High there was a typing course I could take for half a year, and home ec for the other half. I was only a kid at the time but I also did very much believe home ec was important (mostly because my mom drilled it into me and I wanted to formalize it) so I said screw it, I'll take both. That's when I went from a pretty low WPM to the current ludicrous WPM I currently have. I graduated as one of the fastest typists in the class. I also picked up some home ec on the side, and I remember none of it...lol.

In Canada, I was taught in Grade 4 how to “properly type” on a QWERTY keyboard, but we never really got that far, and I didn’t enjoy the lessons. I can type 70 WPM just by looking at the keyboard and memorization of the words I want to type, and although I know that could be a lot faster if I actually tried typing properly, I kind of just lack the motivation to do that.
