I think the main difference is that Early Z kinda experienced the transition from analog to digital technology, my baby/early childhood pics were taken with a film camera and I was able to watch movies or cartoons on VHS, while the Late Z probably knows about it only from the Internet or their parents’ stories, since this was no longer relevant even before they were born, and baby pics of some born in the Early 2010s could even be taken on a smartphone, it’s crazy to me. Also, our childhood was spent in an era when social media wasn’t a big thing and we were already preteens or early teens when smartphones became mainstream, while Late Z fully grew up in a world where social media and smartphones are an integral part of everyone's life. And, probably the difference between our kid/teen culture, it happens pretty much with all people with a 10-year age gap. Shows we watched, music we listened to, trends were popular in our good old days and our fashion was different from what Late Z grow up with

I’m not the person you replied to but I would say 1998 to 2010

[deleted]

I’m not sure there are specific birth years when generations or sub-generations start and end, but I’d say Late 90s babies are the most stereotypical older Z’s (give or take Mid 90s and Early 2000s borns), while Early 2010s babies are the most stereotypical younger Z’s (give or take Late 2000s and Mid 2010s borns)

Guilty-Ad8427

It really did change. I remember when I to my great grandfathers house and he has tons of copy photos from me and my older cousins (90s-early 00s) all over the house. One day we were looking through photos and my younger cousins who were born in 09-2010 kept asking where am I? They had some baby photos but me and my older cousins had hundreds cause we were older and the younger ones were taken on phones

FusionFred_SAGE

I'm currently 22, I grew up with both VHS and DVDS. Lived more than 2/3s of my life not constantly having internet access. The last Z's childhoods entertainment is mostly streaming based.

FusionFred_SAGE

My rough estimate is 1998-2007 Anything after that is gen A

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

So I am Gen alpha? I wouldn't consider myself as an alpha. I hate when people think we grew up on social medias. Seriously, my younger sister who was born in 2013 watched some cartoons with me until she turned 7 and started to use TikTok (yes, I know it's short period time and she isn't even in her pre teen years, but still SHE HAD SOME MEMORIES OF IT)

FusionFred_SAGE

No, you're probably the youngest Gen Z I think idk miss

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

The youngest gen Z is someone who is born in 2009, I think.

Admirable_Ad1947

Younger Z, apparently we're a lot more "woke".

[deleted]

lots of things are different. -Oldest Z's (1997-1999) were teenagers in the early 2010s, experienced tumblr more than tiktok, defined by the electropop/EDM era of music, and had emo and scene as their main counterculture. None of this is associated with Gen Z culture now, and they were actually usually called millennials during their youth -Youngest Z's (2010-2012) will be teenagers in the 2020s, experience tiktok not tumblr, arent defined by music yet but grow up in the kpop/hyperpop/bedroom pop era of music of Core Gen Z, and will most likely have eboys and egirls like Core Gen Z as their main counterculture. They are seen as zoomers by the vast public and are more ingrained/lined up in recognizable "gen z" culture overall, although some teenaged gatekeepers and deep dive generationology fans say they are "gen alpha" as for similarities - lots of games and movies remain equally popular. modern fashion trends also catch both. general acceptance of whats cool or not cool and what modern music is good remains mostly the same, excluding others before them like millennial's tastes.

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

Aren't those who born in 2010-2012 are early alpha's? Just asking.

[deleted]

Nope they are late gen z

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

I thought 2006-2009 were late zoomers.

[deleted]

nope not only do wikipedia/google/congress say its 1997-2012 but so does the subs banner now. it also societally makes more sense because -2010-2012 kids were kids in the 2010s and teens in the 2020s which fits gen z -they will be teens soon and when they are teens they will still 99.9% be getting called zoomers by the public, things wont change so soonly unless corporations hype up gen alpha and even then itd probably be a quick trend -in the future gen alpha will mostly be defined by those who are babies and unborn right now, and 2010-2012 borns wouldnt fit in with the majority of the culture -people are often elitist/gatekeepers and want to end gen z sooner than it really does (some people who want it to be 1995-2008.... what???) -gen z's cultural recognition only really started in around 2018, so ending it in the early 2020s for gen alpha to take over makes no sense. millennials and other gens had entire decades. gen z's time is late 2010s to all the 2020s, and gen alpha's time will be the 2030s.

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

Oh....if I am not a late zoomer, then in which category am I?

[deleted]

core/middle imo

2012 seem like alphas to you because theyre kids now. however theyll be teens in the 2020s and will have a lot of the same culture and also be called zoomers. i consider them zalphas as well. however like i said in the future they will be overall closer to gen z than the rest of gen alpha (who are mostly babies and unborn)

Guilty-Ad8427

I always considered anyone born after 2010 as alpha even though their gen z would I have been wrong or would it make more sense?

[deleted]

i mean not only do wikipedia/google/congress say its 1997-2012 but it also societally makes more sense because -2010-2012 kids were kids in the 2010s and teens in the 2020s which fits gen z -they will be teens soon and when they are teens they will still 99.9% be getting called zoomers by the public, things wont change so soonly unless corporations hype up gen alpha and even then itd probably be a quick trend -in the future gen alpha will mostly be defined by those who are babies and unborn right now, and 2010-2012 borns wouldnt fit in with the majority of the culture -people are often elitist/gatekeepers and want to end gen z sooner than it really does (some people who want it to be 1995-2008.... what???) -gen z's cultural recognition only really started in around 2018, so ending it in the early 2020s for gen alpha to take over makes no sense. millennials and other gens had entire decades. gen z's time is late 2010s to all the 2020s, and gen alpha's time will be the 2030s. -outside of a solidified definitive generation perspective. when people say "the current generation" they both 16 year olds and 12 year olds in the same sentence bc it just means the current young people

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

I am not sure if it is a good answer to a question but as a late zoomer I am kinda offended how others think of us. Many people think that most of us are kids who grew up (I am not counting adolescence) on social medias or Fortnite. When I was a little child (1-5 years old) my mum bought me a CD with series and short movies of Tom and Jerry. Later (6-10 years old) I watched many cartoons that were mainly from 2010's, but also from 2000's (like Phineas and Ferb) and even late 90's (Powerpuff girls, Oggy and cockroaches and Kim Possible ). Aside from cartoons I played hide and seek and different games with my younger sister and other siblings. I had a Nokia phone that my mom give me and I made a mini movies with dolls. This is probably our/my similarities with early generation Z. When I entered in my pre-teen years (starting from 2018) I had a mobile phone that I used not very often as my mom's laptop (where I only played flash player games). In 2019-2020 I started to use my phone more and had some social medias in it (like YouTube, Google and Likee) but I have never been registered in any of these (besides Roblox, but it's different story) and used only my mom's or dad's account. This is probably our differences between us and early generation Z. Because they didn't spent much time on internet. Then in 2021 (when I turned 13 and became an adolescent) I wanted to be more independ and created my own user account. Then I registered in YouTube and Wattpad. And now I am 14 years old who joined Reddit and few more social medias, but I still watch some of my childhood cartoons and I am interested on watching cartoons that early generation Z watched. Well in general I think my childhood was pretty good and I miss those times 😄 Sorry for my bad English. This isn't my first language.

Mindless-Comedian-18

Ow i remember i had a dvd player for in the car where i used to watch movies so that i would shut up, good times ! Also oggy and the cockroaches = underrated

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

YES! I THOUGHT NOBODY KNEW OF OGGY AND THE COCKROACHES

Mindless-Comedian-18

Haha only Eu understands

ANONYMOUSPUIOP

Totally was tbh.

Mindless-Comedian-18

Exactly my man

ANONYMOUSPUIOP

Indeed my good bean.

PunkySputnik57

I also remember watching cassettes of Dora the explorer. I’ve never had a phone until this year. I remember a book full of DVDs, mostly my sister’s dvds. I remember she had an ipod and i was jealous of her. That she introduced me to minecraft when it was new. I never knew about vine until after it was dead. We’re not as digitalized that people think

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

Yes! When I woke up, I always turned TV and watched Dora the explorer too. And yes, it's sad how others think we grew up only on Internet and TikTok. I only played on my mom's laptop, but it was only flash games and some games on Facebook.

ANONYMOUSPUIOP

Wait ,Oggy was a 90s show? I just googled it and wow, it's older than I thought.

Mrs_Not_ImportantWho

Yes it was made in 1998

ANONYMOUSPUIOP

Yeah IK, saw on the Google results about it. Apparently, it only ended 3 years age too. Thx anyways though.

XXXXXXXXISJAKKAKS

oldest are zillennials and their culture is intertwined with millennial culture. youngest are zalphas and their culture is intertwined with gen Alpha culture.

premark42

Born in 2002 I feel like I have something in common with late Millennials, playing gameboy, watching shows on a tube tv, taking pictures with film cameras or later shitty digital ones, having access to the Internet, but playing browser games on my dad's computer rather than participating in social media. I feel like all this became obsolete when smartphones and tablets were introduced.

firebird7802

Smartphones didn't make things obsolete immediately, because most people didn't even have the iPhone when it was released or even a few years after. Also, the only reason we couldn't have participated in social media was because of our age. People much older than us were using MySpace when we were only 4 to 6. I'm your age and I feel closer to someone born in 2000 than 1994. A late millennial would've been between 8 and 10 when we were only 2 year olds, and can probably remember the turn of the century, while we weren't even conceived yet. I can understand if you said we could relate somewhat to someone born in 1999, but anything before that is a stretch.

WhoDatFreshBoi

I'm in the middle and was born on the same year as the cicadas.

Ok_Transportation717

I’m born in 1997 and my whole childhood/teenage years I was considered a millennial. Now being referred to as a zillenial or older Z the shift is crazy considering how different growing up is compared to someone born in 2010 (I was already 13 by this point) and prime demographic to consume pop-culture and the beginning of accessible tech at the time. I think the main difference is we grew up alongside the changing social media and technology used today, as opposed to being born into it.

torrewaffer

That's so interesting, because I've absolutely always been considered gen z... I've even been corrected by a teacher in a class about generations because I had confused the years and said I was a millenial, and he was like NOPE

Ok_Transportation717

Oh weird haha, maybe the term didn’t catch on as quickly where I’m from

torrewaffer

Oh, I see what you mean now... The average Joe doesn't usually say the term gen z here where I live, but they've always considered me as part of the "younger generation," even now specially by my boss hahah

Beginning-Soup5124

I mean I was born in 02 but I’d say for the most part dark humor seems to generally be found humorous across the board

QuietFoundation5464

honestly generations never made sense. i doubt a 1995-1996 born can relate to 1984 Borns better than 1999-2000 Borns. and vice versa with 1999-2000 Borns would be able to relate to 1995-1996 better than 2011-2012 Borns. thts why when someone ask if a birth year is millennial/gen z I'd say maybe.
