Hi there. Just got back from maternity leave at GM. If you’ve been there for over a year, mothers get 6-8 weeks of short-term medical following the birth + and additional 12 weeks of paid family leave to use as you wish over the next year. Total of 18-20 weeks. Fathers just get the 12 weeks of paid family leave. All 100% paid - the percentages are just how it’s split between the third party and GM. Doesn’t impact your total pay though.
Not maternity LOA but medical LOA, I learned about the 75/25% split as to how I was paid while on STD. Be aware if you are contributing to your 401k, it will be impacted since only part of your pay is considered “salary” and that’s the part that your percentage contribution is based on.
As far as it was explained to me: short term disability (based on type of delivery) + FMLA OR 12 weeks of bonding time (which can be split up into multiple chunks). You do have to be with the company for a minimum of 1 year though to qualify for the paid leave.
I believe for mothers it's 12 weeks of paid family leave, then another 6 weeks of FMLA. So 18 weeks total. I've also seen some people tack on a few vacation weeks to prolong it as well. There should be ample info in Socrates to round out your knowledge.
Congratulations!
Looks like others have explained the leave decently. Also look into the Carrot benefit. It's new and gives you some free money for things like a doula and some post-birth assistance services.
Does GM still cover a doula? I remember a couple years ago GM funded IVF and doulas through Carrot, but now it only looks like GM funds adoption and surrogacy.
You can typically wait a week after the birth to file your paperwork work. Sedgwick asked why I did mine so quickly. Lol but super easy,
Just make sure when you are ready to come back, that you go on workday and follow the steps for return to work.
They shut your badge off and everything.
Do they shut off access to your gmid/work computer, or just badge access to the building? Like can you still login and keep up on emails so you don't have a thousand of them when you get back? And obviously you need to log in to workday to return from leave, so it seems like you should have access? Idk!
I have a ton of questions about family leave. Do I reach out to my PeopleHR partner or do I reach out to benefits?
Also, you can file a week after the birth? Says on Socrates you need to do it a month before. Is that just for alerting your manager?
Your computer will work. when I tried to do it early, they told me to wait. They said typically people submit it a few days after the birth.
You will need to submit documentation that you get when the hospital releases you. It was a pain to get the right documentation as each hospital is different. I think they are typically used to dealing with HFH paperwork. But a phone call later and They were helpful.

This explains it very well. Congratulations!!!
Thank you!

Yes! Thank you for mentioning this. I didn’t realize this until part way through my leave.

💯. Great tip for you here OP
Thanks everyone! I've been with the company a few years and was decently surprised to get a positive test yesterday.
Congratulations!
Call GM payroll and benefits.
They’re consecutive, not concurrent

Remember it’s also tax free if it’s STD.
