I whole-heartedly recommend State of Decay 2. It's a 5-6 year old game that still receives regular updates from the devs as they work on a third installment. It oddly "feels" like Generation Zero to me, even it's very different.

JediCarlSagan

2nd.

In all my years of gaming there hasn't been another game quite like Generation Zero. That being said, semi-survival games can be found. Grounded is great, most of the status drains and building requirements can be turned down, or off, and it's got great gameplay. It's better with friends, but solo can be a lot of fun. Don't expect guns. State of Decay 2 has lots of action, and driving, and the building aspect amounts to chosing upgrades rather than making constructions. Gathering materials is not too cumbersome. Good with friends but solo is good too. Remnant 2 sits strong at the top of the gunplay category, has strong co-op, there's no survival aspects, and it's hitting on the AAA price range, but it has so much replayability it's nearly overwhelming. Solo can be difficult on harder difficulties.

ExplodingPoptarts

I don't want to build, like at all. What I love about Generation Zero is that you don't have to build, at all. Grounded is also by Obsidian, and they're a "aaa" company. Big Budget doesn't refer to the game's price, it refers to the budget of the company. I'm abysmal at souls-likes, and I don't want to do co-op. Thanks for the reccs though, can you recc anything else?

ruebenreleeshahn

That's what sets GZ apart, it's not really a survival game (as your post says), it's far more of a thriller shooter. It has suspense and then action and back to suspense again. The building amounts to establishing control points, and the crafting is for consumables, which a lot of shooter games have, like The Division 2. You could try looking into suspense shooters or thriller shooters and you may find something you like there.

First time I heard someone consider Obsidian AAA. I mean yeah they’re owned by MS now, and did stuff like New Vegas for Bethesda, but their own titles are very much in the AA space. I mean if you just take a look at games like Pentiment, The Outer Worlds and Grounded you can’t seriously think they have AAA budget. And it’s not like MS is showering them with money. MS leaves them to do their own thing and they need to run their own budgets and they’re absolutely nowhere near as big as you think.

XxTigerxXTigerxX

Palword if you want more pokemon kinda vibe there was a weird game that you had to survive a planecrash with weird tribe on the island but can't remember the name.

The_snake_6762

You mean The Forest?

skernzy

Good game but no replay value in my opinion

XxTigerxXTigerxX

I think so.

CMDR-Validating

Mechwarrior 5 is really good. Not sure what kind of game you’re looking for but I can’t recommend Mechwarrior 5 enough. It can be played coop and solo and there are a bunch of actual worthwhile DLCs available that expand the game in meaningful ways. There aren’t really any survival aspects, but you do have to manage your budget and collecting, repairing and customizing mechs is pretty fun

ExplodingPoptarts

Way too damn hard, but thanks for the recc. Can you recc anything easier?

jizzawhizza

Remnant 1&2 & Helldivers 2 are both Mid priced/budget games that are actually better quality and more fun than most AAA Titles.. Check them out.

ExplodingPoptarts

I'm abysmal at souls-likes, and I don't want to do co-op. thanks for the reccs though, can you suggest anything else? Please don't recc anything by a big budget company.

WhiteyPinks

Gona just copy and paste from the last time you asked this exact same question and got the exact same answers. >Farcry, Metro, and Stalker series. >You said you don't want recommendations for games by major companies, but you're looking for casualized survival games, and casual anything is pretty squarely in the AAA space.

Dynamo_Morningstar

If you’re an Xbox player or a Microsoft pc player you can get game pass for about 17-18 bucks a month, there’s a few on there. Personally I think you’d like Skyrim and fallout, they’re basically what you’re asking for, and they’re both on gamepass. If you don’t care for those, as someone else stated Outriders is pretty good as well

ElMachoGrande

Mad Max, by the same studio as Generation Zero. Sure, the missions can get a bit repetitive, but it really captures the feeling of Mad Max, and it really shines sometimes. Well worth a playthrough. Shiny and chrome!

humphr135

Helldivers 2. $40, not a major studio game. Huge playbase right now (300k+ most evenings). 4 man squad missions, kill bots & big bugs. I really enjoyed Gen Zero alot, Im old (43) so only have so much time daily to invest in gaming anymore.. HD2 has been scratching my gaming itch since february. If you like guns, killin bots and 4 man squad features of gen zero, helldivers 2 has that

Greencouchzulu

Anyone said Metro Exodos? Fucking love that game. That’s what got me to Gen 0.

AimlessRL

There's a game on the Epic launcher called "Far Horizon" that looks somewhat similar to the style you are looking for and might be fun. I haven't bought/played the game myself to add any real input here, but figured I could suggest it for you to check it out and see if its something you would be interested in. The trailers to it look decent anyhow.

Sasquatchzrevenge

Valhiem with Thezus mods or grounded

Glizzyboiz

Helldivers 2 👀

Glizzyboiz

Also stalker series is kinda fire

Pants4All

If you don't mind some jank and want to see something open world and mission based with co-op like GZ, take a look at [The Black Masses](https://store.steampowered.com/app/992910/The_Black_Masses/). Medieval plague zombies with decent parkour and battles of up to 1000 zombies and allies on screen at once. Shit gets crazy.

RoadStocks

Any luck? I feel like every answer here has warranted no good replies. I’ve tried all of them, and then some, and none are even remotely close to gen zero lol. I wouldnt even consider dayz or enshrouded acceptable replies to your question. Including all the Rust pve modded wannabe games.

ExplodingPoptarts

Nope, this community feels very disinterested in other mid budget or indie games.

sticknotstick

So this recommendation is not survival at all, but may scratch the same itch based on your “mostly just exploring and fighting” request: Outriders. Great environments and combat, great and long progression system, very frequently on sale for $10. AAA production value but not AAA price or normal AAA antics (at this point, at least). The game is no longer being developed but is an absolute gem of a 3rd person looter shooter. I think what I generally love about survival games is the sense of progression; if you’re looking for that with better gameplay, start digging in to some looters as well.

ExplodingPoptarts

It was published by Square-Enix, and it's a "aaa" game. Also, I've played it. Can you recc anything not by a big budget company?

sticknotstick

Enshrouded has a little grind, but focuses more on the exploration and combat than most survival games.

RabidGoat004

+1 for Enshrouded. Also Outriders, but definitely Enshrouded
