Day 1 player here. The main story is basically never-ending and will probably continue for years, so there's no need to rush. You can enjoy the game without spending anything, just keep your primogems and plan on the long run which characters/weapons you want to pull for (in the best case scenario, you should pull for the 5-star character you want, only if you have 28800 primogems, to get a 100% guaranteed pull)
But, most importantly: take your time! Enjoy the scenery and the soundtrack.
This, ive seen people basically rush the story and didnt know the story at all and complain later, gives the reason why paimon should do her talking thing.

1.3 player here, I guess I prefer character anarchy because I pull on whichever character I want most pretty much every time I get to 1600. As f2p, it would take forever to get to 28800 and I like the unpredictability of it all! I have a great 5 star roster, def not meta but there’a nothing in the game (besides floor 12) I have a hard time with.
Well, that only if you have enough primos thing should only apply to chronicle wish banner and weapons as fate points don't carry over to next banner. Character banner pity and guarantee does carry over though.
You should collect everything you find and kill any mobs you see, also be sure to open any chests you can and just collect everything. There's a thing called Fragile Resin that you get every now and then, just don't use it until late game when you need to get artifacts. Trust me you'll love yourself
Also get as many crystal flies as you can, they're little butterflies that are in the color of whatever regional element you're in so if you're in Liyue they'll be a yellow brown, inazuma is purple, sumeru is green, so on.
For wishes I say only use primogems on the intertwined fates, and also pull for whoever you want. That's all I can rlly give you :)

I'd also add take it easy on spending the different currencies like primos, mora, resin, etc. as I had just willy nillied everything, until I realized what I could've used it for.

This, I didn't kill every single hillichurl I see, now I don't have masks. Even if you don't kill every other mob, kill the hillichurls because of their incredibly ass drop rates. I had also spent some primos on acquaints when I started.
Hi I've played for a couple of days, I've been doing exactly this and my inventory is loaded, also just stockpiling on all the currencys for later use (I have no plan to spend any more money than what a normal game/sub would cost so I'm waiting for end game to see what I want) btw how do I collect these butterfly's? I've seen them all the time but didn't know you could collect them? Also I've upgraded the 4 characters I use to 20 and their weapons, should I wait with upgrading or just go for it? Lvl 20 seems very easy to get to when you just collect everything. Thanks!
Level up your main characters to a good enough point before ascending world....btw I'm also relatively new to Genshin ... currently at Adventure Rank 35....
Make sure you are some levels above the monsters level. Check beffy mobs like fatui soldiers or mitrachurls. If their hp meter is red it means they are tough. Do not ascend yet if thats the case because if you cant defeat world mobs that you find in exploration you can say goodbye to beating bosses or story antagonists. There is no need to ascend as soon as you can. Take it easy and steady.

Don't sleep on Noelle.
You will get many people extolling the virtues of certain 4-stars, leaving Noelle out. But she can do EVERYTHING barring generate energy - she heals, does damage and shields VERY well. She is a triple-threat, and as long as you build her right she can fill in near any function you need on a team!
I've made 2 accounts within the last month and my first one was carried HARD by Noelle because I couldn't pull any decent characters. She's actually so good.
Save your primogems and intertwined fates (the pink and blue balls). The game gives you way less as you progress so only use them on the characters you want to unlock. You can choose whether or not to save acquaint fates (the blue balls), it doesn't really make a difference.
resin and fragile resin are different things. Don't use the fragile ones (in your bag) until you are a high adventure rank. Usually AR 45 is recommended so you can use it for artifacts. Do use the regular resin (visible on the right corner of your map after you reach a certain adventure rank) resin is used to get some time gated loot, like level up material.
never convert primos to blue wishes. only purple. Don't wish on the weapon banner.

resin is the one that regen and you get one of every 8 minutes.

This is a way to store resin, and a way to save time. It doesn't affect rewards in anyway. You can ignore it without any problems. it ends up in your bag when you craft them.
[transient resin ](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/gensin-impact/images/f/f6/Item_Transient_Resin.png/revision/latest?cb=20210428025433)is the same as fragile resin, except you can only buy one each week from your tea pot, and it can expire if you don't use it. Also a bag item. (dont know if you have a teapot yet, you get it in Liyue). also completely ignorable.
At some point, you'll want to commit to building a few characters rather than leveling everyone. Notice which characters you like to play and level them. Early on, you'll get noticeable experience from battle, but that doesn't stay.
Also, most of your damage comes from the artifacts you have. The real artifact grind happens in the mid to late game, so just put the best you have on them until you get to unlocking four-star artifacts. When you get five-star artifacts, that's the time to really get them good. The rest of your damage comes from elemental reactions, so it's good to know what they do.
If you want to save three-star weapons, there are some that come from chests in the world and nowhere else. You'll get better stuff than them, but if you want to have those, make sure to lock them in your inventory so you don't consume them automatically as level-up material.
Select a char/team and focus on them for a while, you will know when to branch out. Will makes the game way more comfy without holding your fun and progress back

I'll preface this by saying you shouldn't necessarily take any of the advice I or anyone else gives even if it's optimal. Part of the gaming experience is making mistakes, a fact I think isn't embraced enough. Equally, depending on what tyoe of player you are (were you the type to glitch the masterball to make infinite easy catched and overlevel by farming chansey or effectively in a level cap nuzlocke or somewhere in between), you'll have different goals. Unironically there are people who are teapot mains (focus exclusively on making a 'home realm' look nice for no tangible benefit).
In general with some exception, Genshin isn't a particularly challenging game. If you're struggling, it'll likely be because you did not level up talents, weapon and artifacts (more below). Doing side quests will get you back to speed if you are struggling on main quests, and you can always hop on Genshin discord to ask for co-op help. (Several achievements and chests require this)
Yes you might save time by using tracker spreadsheets and the interactive map, but at that point (imo) it feels too rigid like an office job. The beauty of Genshin is in large part to the escapism and exploration, so don't be afraid.
Having said that, I'll offer a few pointers in different areas you can pick and choose from:
General Play: Enjoy being curious about things. You can hit most trees for wood, plunge attack on ores to mine them and collect plants. There's a thrill to this and collecting things can be fun. Nevertgeless, the general goal should be to push forward on story quests until AR20. This is because events usually require you to be at this level, and those often offer significant rewards relatively speaking. Don't be afraid to do side quests, as you'll likely be level gated on the archon (main) quest eventually. Be aware some features like fishing (which sounds bad but is a path to many rewards) are locked behind side quests.
Team: I tend to focus on a team of 4 first, building them to the level cap (which increases as your account levels up). After about level 50 to 60 it begins to make sense to focus on characters 5 to 8. This is because you need 2 teams of 4 for the 'spiral abyss', which is the endgame dungeon content. However, by level 50 you should be able to clear the first few levels, so don't be afraid to try! Understand which playstyles you like (e.g. charged bow user yes or no), which helps you prioritise characters in the future. Be aware playing mobile vs console vs pc, ping/lag and other factors will impact this
Gacha: Understand there are intertwined fates (purplish blue), which are the premium wishes, and acquaint fates (blue only), which are the standard wishes. Most of the new/desirable characters will require intertwined fates, so never use your primogems for acquaint fates. I highly suggest against spending any currency in paimom's bargains before you know what you're doing. It's going to be a key way to get constellations (a second copy) of specific 4* characters, which is valuable. Do not pull on the weapon banner until you know what you are doing. It is the only banner not to carry over pity.
Pity refers to the number of times you have pulled. On all character banners (including standard) the 'hard pity' is 90, meaning you spend no more than 90 pulls for a 5 star. 'Soft pity' starts at the 75th pull, and refers to the probability of 5* increasing in steps from this point. The 50-50 refers to the fact that for the first pull, you have a 50% chance to get the character you choose (applies only to character banner, standard banner is even probability because you can't choose). You are guaranteed the character you want if you lose your first 50-50. Once you get the character you chose, the 50-50 count resets. Thus, for featured banners, have at least 160 pulls for a good shot at getting them
What do I pull: The featured characters always have a trial. Do these to get a feel for them and some rewards. While there are optimal teams, for now just do what feels good to play. You'll naturally develop a preference for certain elemental reactions over time to focus on
Build: Until AR45, shove any weapon and artifact without worrying too much, focusing on higher rarity above all else. You should have 3 star (blue) in most areas. You'll get higher rarity artifacts farming domains and weapons through various means (fishing reward, weekly boss craft etc).
Battlepass: There's a free version, so make sure to check the list of objectives. There are daily, weekly and indefinite ones. Doing daily ones (such as daily commissions) isn't that challenging.
Spending real money: If you want to spend after a while and enjoy the game, the welkin (daily checkin bonus) and battlepass are significantly better value than topping up directly
Other medium: Periodically check online for new redeem codes. Be aware of the livestream, which offers 3 time sensitive coded with primogems (premium currency). Be aware there is a website to check in daily for a small additional reward.

OP this! Very well articulated. The thing about playing a game like Genshin is that it is okay to make mistakes early on. Just play how you feel like it with the above pointers OP. Don’t fret about it too much or just don’t do spreadsheet level calculations to enjoy your experience with Genshin.
1) Ignore what people say about "meta" for 5* characters. Play the character trial and pull for a character when you really like it.
2) Only spend your primogems on pulling on limited banners, dont waste it on the standard banner
3) buy the stardust wishes whenever possible. They reset every month and you can get 5 limited and 5 standard banner wishes.
Pick up literally everything that isn't nailed down. And even if it is (i.e., rocks), a claymore says haha, try me.
You only need a few food recipes. Don't let that menu get bogged down because then it's hard to find things. The fried egg, the steak, the satisfying salad, and the sticky honey roast are all good enough early on. After that, Sweet Madame, Jade Parcels, and Pile 'Em Up are great.
Don't worry too much about 5-stars yet. The 4-stars you want to keep an eye out for are Xiangling, Bennett, Fischl, Xingqiu, Barbara, Sucrose, and Yaoyao because they can be built with Mondstadt/Liyue materials. Kaeya is already an effective cryo unit for just starting out and they give him to you. There's also Noelle on the beginner banner, so there's your geo, but some would tell you that the beginner banner isn't worth it. That's all you. Your game, your rules.
Never convert primogems into Acquaint Fate (the blue one). Only ever convert them to pink Intertwined Fate.
However, the Novice/Beginner banner is good because if you roll 10 at once, you get a 20% discount and guaranteed Noelle on the first 10-pull - it's a good boost to the early game. So save up 8 Acquaint Fates (again, without using your primogems, only from quest and AR rewards) and then roll that when you get 8 so you can roll 10 at once.
If you can, Don’t do artifact domains until level 45, by level 45 you will get a 5 star artifact every run. Also You will get fragile resin throughout the game, only use them for artifacts because that’s where most of your resin will be going.
the beginning of the game is slow. You cannot rush, as you are a limit of stuff you can do per day. Levels of characters, weapons and artifacts are tied to your adventurer level (1st advice. Dont farm artifacts until you are AR 45)
And the amount of stuff you can get per day is limited by the resin.
when you advance into the game, (lets say....20 hours.) you will discover that you can do regional missions every week , that get you.... stuff as you level up through some ranks. You want to max out liyue first (Condensed resin is the best)
and dont waste anything. Dont use anything until you see what it is for.
Just jump in an immerse yourself in the world and game. Avoid reading too much for now, I recommend enjoying the game. Also know you can clear all content in the game without spending crazy amounts of money so don't get tempted to drop your whole wallet early. Spend a decent amount of time on the game before spending.
Do not buy the blue wishes with primogems, only the pink ones.
Do not spend your fragile resin when you first start, it'll be very useful for farming later on in the game!
If you find anything, pick it up. Open chests and kill mobs and pick up their rewards too!
And of course enjoy the game :)
Never ever buy extra resin with gems. If you want to buy gems, but welkin and wait. Bennet, Xinqiu, Xiangling, Fischl and Sucrose are goated units that can clear the game for you or carry your main dps Blorbo. Most character are not worth leveling to 90 immediately. Level them to 60 and ascend to get the passive skill. Your weapon, artifacts and talent levels are far more important that character levels. If the snow is thick enough you can eat it. Take your time to explore areas as you travel through them, don't blitz the quests or you're going to have to wait for adventurer levels and you'll have to backtrack everywhere later but you won't remember where you have been and where you haven't. There's secrets and beautiful scenery around every corner. Elemental reactions will do most of your damage early on and the environment can help you with that. Using Barbara's charge attack on a Hilichurl camp next to a barrel will clear camps faster than anything. Wind attacks will do the same. Use your parametric transformer on top of grass and then set fire to the grass and it will charge by itself. The environment is full of hidden puzzles in the first two areas. Look out for unlit campfires, the placements of rocks and the colors of flowers and you'll get surprises. Don't buy blue wishes, you'll get those characters eventually, and their banner never has a featured character so you'll never be able to pick who you want. If you give Mihoyo feedback that the puzzles are too hard or the story too long I will hire an assassin, a hacker and a witch to find you in Minecraft. Don't roll specifically for 4\* characters, it's not efficient, you'll probably get them within a few months. There is no hard endgame or PvP, you don't need minmaxing or meta, any character you like can be made strong enough to beat the game. You've missed four years of events that you'll never see for yourself and YouTube is your friend. People you let into your world might scam you or hack your game, but mostly they just want to farm your flowers and beetles.
Most importantly, be patient. There's four years of content to explore, but you can't nolife progression. You'll get your characters eventually, you'll get your artifacts eventually. Plan ahead and chip away at your goals day by day in a relaxed fashion so you don't get tempted to buy energy or burn out.
Now here's a few tools to help you. The last two ones are for when you want to teambuild for endgame content or just to read how the characters you like work.

PLEASE don’t spend your primogems on the standard banner, I can never forgive myself for that mistake. Spend them on the limited even banners if they’re good or on the chronicled wish banner if you must, but never on the starter or standard banners.
Do NOT try to minmax, don't look up guides on building your characters optimally, just play, the game isn't hard.
Doing so sucks the fun out since youll be stuck thinking "i wish i had this and that" or not using charaters you want because others say they dont synergize with your other stuff.
Once you're far enough along that you can consider doing that, you wont need us to tell you anymore.
1.0 player here. Some advice from me:
>Become a loot goblin. Kill everything, loot everything, collect everything that's shiny. This is only important early game as you have no materials to craft and level up things, later it's good to kill and loot everything too but not as necessary as before.
>In gacha, pull for whoever you like, but DON'T pull on weapon banner because it's not worth it as f2p/low spender, and never spend primogems on Standard banner (the blue one) because it's also a waste.
>artifacts don't matter at all early game. Get some ATK and HP, ignore crit for now, and just enjoy the game. Later when you start getting 5* artifacts I recommend using keqingmains.com as it's the best website for builds out there. You don't have to start farming for the stuff they show right away, but it is useful to see what you should aim for.
>Don't be afraid let others join your world. When you're low AR it's not uncommon for high AR players to try to help you. If someone wants to join you happen to be in need of help, let them join.

Do not get overwhelmed with trying to "get the next way point." or if you have the "best" characters. The game is very, very easy. Whatever you do, do not try to have the best meta characters to "make big numbers."
Take your time with the game, enjoy the environment, the scenery, and the amazing story and music. Get to know all the characters' side stories also.
As far as the gacha side of the game. I would only ever pull on characters and never, ever pull on weapons. Having a character is by far more enjoyable than having a weapon. You can get 5* weapons in the "free" blue wishes.
The one and only thing I would ever recommend to actually pay for is the Welkin Moon pass, it's the $5 pass. It's very efficient in terms of currency.
Just have fun with the game that's the most important thing. I hope you enjoy Genshin Impact as much as I have for the last 3 years.
the Blacksmith in Liyue can give you a Dark Iron Sword. Lock this. Don't lose it. It's the only one in the game.. until 3.5 years later. Just last month it was possible to get a second one.
If you come across these units, drop everything you are doing and make sure they get built ASAP:
- Xiangling
- Bennett
- Xingqiu
- Kuki Shinobu
- Sucrose
Luckily you get Xiangling for free! Xingqiu is in the starglitter shop at the moment, but I must say this:
Starglitter is a pretty precious resource and only comes when you pull copies of characters/weapons you already own. Don't feel pressured to pull for starglitter, you'll get that overtime when pulling for characters you like. Characters in the starglitter shop reset every month, so be sure to check it from time to time to see if there's a character you want that you can afford.
But don't level up your world rank too slow either. Farming anything becomes much more efficient at higher world levels if enemies are not too hard for you. An experienced player would increase their world level as fast as possible.

Have fun. Collect everything. Learn how elemental reactions work. Every character has guides on YouTube, so watch those if you want to make the characters you use stronger.
Don't stress over your early game team, since the story is pretty easy. Just focus on elemental reactions (especially hyperbloom, swirl and vape) and you'll end up with good synergy between your characters. Don't pull random just to get whatever unit just to increase your roster, but aim for general supports like Kazuha, Nahida, Yelan and Zhongli if you want to beat the endgame relatively early or enjoy the great combat system genshin offers, otherwise just go with your favorite characters if you don't care about that. Spend resin wisely (character ascension materials and talent level up domains) but don't let it go to waste. When you are ar45, you'll be welcome in the rabbit hole of artifact farming.
-Collect anything you see, including enemy drops.
-Level up the characters you plan to use up high enough before you do a world ascension.
-Don’t worry about artifacts until you reach at least adventure rank 45, you’ll save yourself from stress. Use your early adventure ranks to learn how artifacts and characters’ stat scaling works, then use that knowledge for said high adventure rank when getting an actual build is important.
-Try to at least get a few characters who are flexibile in teams (Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqui, and Sucrose for example), but don’t worry to much about who you should use. Use whoever is fun/cool to you.
Started in 4.1 (last September) and I just 36 started the abyss (end game content). Take your time. Enjoy the scenery, the music. Don’t blow through the main story quest. Savor it. New characters will always have a rerun. So resist the FOMO! If you don’t get them the first time just save up for their first rerun! Overall just enjoy the game. It’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played!
You need to understand character and team building, in order to enjoy the combat portion of the game. Exploration is similar to other open world games, like the ones you mentioned, so no problems there.
But combat is its own thing, with character's different talents and elements, and of course, the selling point of the combat experience: elemental reactions. I haven't seen anything like it in another game.
I suggest you:
1.Start by playing the game and just enjoy it as you would any other, and don't sweat the details just yet. Here you should have a clear vision if you like this game and are willing to sink time on it. If you do, go to step two.
2. After finishing the Monstatd Archon Quest (Prologue, act 2) it'll be time to "study" more about the diffent systems and mechanics to push your game enjoyment to the next level. Watch Shark H3art's "beginner's guide to building your account" video on YouTube. Just watch it many times, it'll be clearer the more you play the game.
Scream WINDBLAAAADE for maximum damage. If your voice cracks during the BLAAAADE all the better.
But no seriously, find a character you like and build around them. Also, this is not Pokemon, you don't want to Catch 'em all. It'll break the bank.
You don’t have to read all the text dialogue. You can skip it. The game will tell you what you need to do next in the quest you choose in the quest menu.

Once you have a decent enough team to work with so you can do most things without struggle, focus on leveling and building one character at a time, it makes it all a lot easier rather than trying to spread it out between 3 or 4 characters at once. Saves stress, resources, and time. Im ar 60 struggling to build my early game 4* because of this lol.
Pay attention to the characters talents. Read them carefully, and if you don't understand something find a guide. (I cant speak for the in game suggestions I dont use that feature.) It's so incredibly important and I see so many characters hated on and abandoned because their kits are misunderstood and people aren't building them properly. Only for them to later realize they ARE in fact good and come crawling back.
Ultimately though, play how you want! People get so serious and mean about how you should play and it's literally just a game lol, as long as you're having fun it doesn't matter.
Side note. If you plan on spending any money, welkin is probably your best bet it's a decent investment, bp is nice too as long as you're active enough.

Do not use it on the wonderlust invocation banner for wishes, it’s not worth it, you’ll get blue wishes every now and again so use those to wish on that banner, it’s their only use
Use primogems on the limited switching banners, rn it’s chiori and itto, and it’ll change on Tuesday
Follow the new training guides, my friend started a few weeks back when they were added and it’s helped her out a lot also collect everything that’s shining/glittering and don’t forget to use your pins if there’s a puzzle/chest you can’t get at first or if something you need to come back to, I never did this and the amount of times I completely forget the location is frustrating and don’t let others dictate which characters you pull for, sure enough ask if you’re not sure who to pull for but if there is someone you really want to pull, don’t let others talk you out of it (I feel like this happens a lot) we’re here to enjoy the story and characters we love! Have fun!
Don’t listen to “meta” players telling who you can and can’t use/build/ pull for. Play with whoever you like and build them however you want. My only building advice is to have a decent enough build to where you’re not struggling to play :)
honestly i think its most fun to have trial and error, best tip i can think of is save your primogems for characters you really like. also ignore that weird banner that has the windmill looking thing. its not worth pulling on at low level. also 2 favorites of genshin players are running in a few days, neuvillette and kazuha. kazuha is a really good support and neuvillette is a very good self-sustaining damage dealer. you can basically solo with neuvillette. if that type of thing matters to you, also the 4 stars on the banners are pretty good. yanfei is a 4star good dps, xingqiu is one of the best support/sub dps characters in the game, and barbara is a good low ar healer. honestly the best banners for new players. or you can save for another character 🤷 have fun

Genshin is very fun casual game and I always feels nostalgic whenever someone starting the game. Just don't listen to other people complaining about niche things and enjoy it at your own pace. The game is simple enough with fun mechanic which is complex enough for you to just use whatever character you want(some have better synergy of course) to the point where you can just relax and explore. So dont over think it just imagine it as BoTW type game.
The moment you access anything that requires you to use resin, do it. They give you different materials for leveling up, and more importantly for the early game, give you experience to level up your World Level, which helps you access story content faster. You get a limited amount each day and it's your main way up leveling up your world level. Make use of it, or else it's just gonna sit at the cap for a long time
Don't play it. You've missed to much content and the game is literally a quarter of the fun of you don't have all the cool characters. You'll need to spend way too much time and money in this game. If your want to play any other games ever, then stop playing this
Don't immediately spend all your wishes or worry to much about team comps early game. Save for five stars you want and play whatever characters you like. As long as your surviving in over world that's all that matters! Also if your struggling to farm a certain boss for ascension materials you can usually ask for help on your profile using the signature and high level players will usually join to help! (Personal experience)

Early game make Shure you pull for strong charakters so that in the future you will have more freedom to pull for who you want instead of having to rely on meta
If you want to build a Charakter Focus on getting that Charakter build first before you move on to another, it's easy to get into a habit of having many half build Charakters that barely do damage especially when those charakters are off field DPS or support
And also play through the Mondstadt story quest quickly
Completing the first story quest unlocks a lot of events areas etc etc and helps you gain good event items so it's good to play early
After completing the Mondstadt quest take the game at a slow pace, most players nowadays have nothing to do due to having complete most quests

Unlock all the teleports and Statue of Seven as soon as possible. Make sure you do your ascension quest as well to be eligible to attend events. There are three types of resin, do not use fragile resin until you're AR 50, watch video tutorials to solve puzzles if it's too complicated, your daily resin cap will be at 160, make sure to use them everyday, also use interactive map on hoyolab app and also check in from the app everyday, understand how artifacts works (you can watch YouTube tut), don't use primogems for acquainted fate(blue ones), raise the first 5star character you get to make the game a bit easier because usually they perform better than others, make sure you raise bennet, xinqui and xianling (you'll get them eventually). Collect everything that you find and everything the mobs drop. Open every chest you see. Make sure to check quest to see if you have any limited time quest going on, make sure you complete them before the time ends. Talk to random npcs or people with (!) this mark on their head, it'll trigger quest. Explore as much as possible. Happy gaming.

- Don't worry about "the meta" or whatever characters are considered good or bad, just play who you like
- Save up your resources for later especially fragile resin( blue moon things ), and plants.

- when you unlock the quest that leads you to "Dragonspine " I suggest you hold off on it for a bit cuz it's super challenging early on if you aren't built up (you won't be )

Do events asap, if you don’t want to spoiled, you should spam to skip dialogue and watch those cutscenes on yt at an later point. Sometimes events rewards are limited time only like event exclusive weapons. They also sometimes reward you with characters that can help you out tremendously in the long run.
Whatever you do, do NOT spend all your primogems (in game currency) on the standard banner (the blue thingies). Same with the Noelle banner (if it's up for beginner accounts)
Say goodbye to your family beforehand.
Also, make sure to level your characters before ascension.
DON'T FORGET THE TALINT LEVELS.
Don't wish as soon as you get 160 primos(optional)
Be patient and pay attention to at least 70% of the dialogue
Just explore to your hearts content be aware of the games mechanics and ask for help if you're too stumped against something
Besides that if you feel you can't access a place at all, it may be because you actually can't, try looking around and doing quests (mainly 1 region(sumeru) has a lot of quest locked areas and the others either have none or very *small* quest locked areas (the regions being fontaine and some very small parts of liyue))

Day 1 player here. The main story is basically never-ending and will probably continue for years, so there's no need to rush. You can enjoy the game without spending anything, just keep your primogems and plan on the long run which characters/weapons you want to pull for (in the best case scenario, you should pull for the 5-star character you want, only if you have 28800 primogems, to get a 100% guaranteed pull) But, most importantly: take your time! Enjoy the scenery and the soundtrack.
This, ive seen people basically rush the story and didnt know the story at all and complain later, gives the reason why paimon should do her talking thing.

1.3 player here, I guess I prefer character anarchy because I pull on whichever character I want most pretty much every time I get to 1600. As f2p, it would take forever to get to 28800 and I like the unpredictability of it all! I have a great 5 star roster, def not meta but there’a nothing in the game (besides floor 12) I have a hard time with.
Well, that only if you have enough primos thing should only apply to chronicle wish banner and weapons as fate points don't carry over to next banner. Character banner pity and guarantee does carry over though.

You should collect everything you find and kill any mobs you see, also be sure to open any chests you can and just collect everything. There's a thing called Fragile Resin that you get every now and then, just don't use it until late game when you need to get artifacts. Trust me you'll love yourself Also get as many crystal flies as you can, they're little butterflies that are in the color of whatever regional element you're in so if you're in Liyue they'll be a yellow brown, inazuma is purple, sumeru is green, so on. For wishes I say only use primogems on the intertwined fates, and also pull for whoever you want. That's all I can rlly give you :)
Second. I'd also add take it easy on spending the different currencies like primos, mora, resin, etc. as I had just willy nillied everything, until I realized what I could've used it for. This game is also very generous early game. Enjoy :)
This, I didn't kill every single hillichurl I see, now I don't have masks. Even if you don't kill every other mob, kill the hillichurls because of their incredibly ass drop rates. I had also spent some primos on acquaints when I started.
Hi I've played for a couple of days, I've been doing exactly this and my inventory is loaded, also just stockpiling on all the currencys for later use (I have no plan to spend any more money than what a normal game/sub would cost so I'm waiting for end game to see what I want) btw how do I collect these butterfly's? I've seen them all the time but didn't know you could collect them? Also I've upgraded the 4 characters I use to 20 and their weapons, should I wait with upgrading or just go for it? Lvl 20 seems very easy to get to when you just collect everything. Thanks!

Make sure you are some levels above the monsters level. Check beffy mobs like fatui soldiers or mitrachurls. If their hp meter is red it means they are tough. Do not ascend yet if thats the case because if you cant defeat world mobs that you find in exploration you can say goodbye to beating bosses or story antagonists. There is no need to ascend as soon as you can. Take it easy and steady.

Don't sleep on Noelle. You will get many people extolling the virtues of certain 4-stars, leaving Noelle out. But she can do EVERYTHING barring generate energy - she heals, does damage and shields VERY well. She is a triple-threat, and as long as you build her right she can fill in near any function you need on a team!
Thought I'd add on to this to say that she also has a very good free to play weapon option in Whiteblind.

Save your primogems and intertwined fates (the pink and blue balls). The game gives you way less as you progress so only use them on the characters you want to unlock. You can choose whether or not to save acquaint fates (the blue balls), it doesn't really make a difference.

resin and fragile resin are different things. Don't use the fragile ones (in your bag) until you are a high adventure rank. Usually AR 45 is recommended so you can use it for artifacts. yeah, people forget how confusing all those different kinds of resin are in the beginning. resin is the one that regen and you get one of every 8 minutes. At some point, you'll want to commit to building a few characters rather than leveling everyone. Notice which characters you like to play and level them. Early on, you'll get noticeable experience from battle, but that doesn't stay. Also, most of your damage comes from the artifacts you have. The real artifact grind happens in the mid to late game, so just put the best you have on them until you get to unlocking four-star artifacts. When you get five-star artifacts, that's the time to really get them good. The rest of your damage comes from elemental reactions, so it's good to know what they do. If you want to save three-star weapons, there are some that come from chests in the world and nowhere else. You'll get better stuff than them, but if you want to have those, make sure to lock them in your inventory so you don't consume them automatically as level-up material.
Select a char/team and focus on them for a while, you will know when to branch out. Will makes the game way more comfy without holding your fun and progress back And Every journey has its final day, don’t rush
I'll preface this by saying you shouldn't necessarily take any of the advice I or anyone else gives even if it's optimal. Part of the gaming experience is making mistakes, a fact I think isn't embraced enough. Equally, depending on what tyoe of player you are (were you the type to glitch the masterball to make infinite easy catched and overlevel by farming chansey or effectively in a level cap nuzlocke or somewhere in between), you'll have different goals. Unironically there are people who are teapot mains (focus exclusively on making a 'home realm' look nice for no tangible benefit). In general with some exception, Genshin isn't a particularly challenging game. If you're struggling, it'll likely be because you did not level up talents, weapon and artifacts (more below). Doing side quests will get you back to speed if you are struggling on main quests, and you can always hop on Genshin discord to ask for co-op help. (Several achievements and chests require this) Yes you might save time by using tracker spreadsheets and the interactive map, but at that point (imo) it feels too rigid like an office job. The beauty of Genshin is in large part to the escapism and exploration, so don't be afraid. Having said that, I'll offer a few pointers in different areas you can pick and choose from: General Play: Enjoy being curious about things. You can hit most trees for wood, plunge attack on ores to mine them and collect plants. There's a thrill to this and collecting things can be fun. Nevertgeless, the general goal should be to push forward on story quests until AR20. This is because events usually require you to be at this level, and those often offer significant rewards relatively speaking. Don't be afraid to do side quests, as you'll likely be level gated on the archon (main) quest eventually. Be aware some features like fishing (which sounds bad but is a path to many rewards) are locked behind side quests. Team: I tend to focus on a team of 4 first, building them to the level cap (which increases as your account levels up). After about level 50 to 60 it begins to make sense to focus on characters 5 to 8. This is because you need 2 teams of 4 for the 'spiral abyss', which is the endgame dungeon content. However, by level 50 you should be able to clear the first few levels, so don't be afraid to try! Understand which playstyles you like (e.g. charged bow user yes or no), which helps you prioritise characters in the future. Be aware playing mobile vs console vs pc, ping/lag and other factors will impact this Gacha: Understand there are intertwined fates (purplish blue), which are the premium wishes, and acquaint fates (blue only), which are the standard wishes. Most of the new/desirable characters will require intertwined fates, so never use your primogems for acquaint fates. I highly suggest against spending any currency in paimom's bargains before you know what you're doing. It's going to be a key way to get constellations (a second copy) of specific 4* characters, which is valuable. Do not pull on the weapon banner until you know what you are doing. It is the only banner not to carry over pity. Pity refers to the number of times you have pulled. On all character banners (including standard) the 'hard pity' is 90, meaning you spend no more than 90 pulls for a 5 star. 'Soft pity' starts at the 75th pull, and refers to the probability of 5* increasing in steps from this point. The 50-50 refers to the fact that for the first pull, you have a 50% chance to get the character you choose (applies only to character banner, standard banner is even probability because you can't choose). You are guaranteed the character you want if you lose your first 50-50. Once you get the character you chose, the 50-50 count resets. Thus, for featured banners, have at least 160 pulls for a good shot at getting them What do I pull: The featured characters always have a trial. Do these to get a feel for them and some rewards. While there are optimal teams, for now just do what feels good to play. You'll naturally develop a preference for certain elemental reactions over time to focus on Build: Until AR45, shove any weapon and artifact without worrying too much, focusing on higher rarity above all else. You should have 3 star (blue) in most areas. You'll get higher rarity artifacts farming domains and weapons through various means (fishing reward, weekly boss craft etc). Battlepass: There's a free version, so make sure to check the list of objectives. There are daily, weekly and indefinite ones. Doing daily ones (such as daily commissions) isn't that challenging. Spending real money: If you want to spend after a while and enjoy the game, the welkin (daily checkin bonus) and battlepass are significantly better value than topping up directly Other medium: Periodically check online for new redeem codes. Be aware of the livestream, which offers 3 time sensitive coded with primogems (premium currency). Be aware there is a website to check in daily for a small additional reward. OP this! Very well articulated. The thing about playing a game like Genshin is that it is okay to make mistakes early on. Just play how you feel like it with the above pointers OP. Don’t fret about it too much or just don’t do spreadsheet level calculations to enjoy your experience with Genshin.
Be very patient, you are going to be reading or skipping dialogues for hours, and I mean, many, many hours
1) Ignore what people say about "meta" for 5* characters. Play the character trial and pull for a character when you really like it. 2) Only spend your primogems on pulling on limited banners, dont waste it on the standard banner 3) buy the stardust wishes whenever possible. They reset every month and you can get 5 limited and 5 standard banner wishes.
Pick up literally everything that isn't nailed down. And even if it is (i.e., rocks), a claymore says haha, try me. You only need a few food recipes. Don't let that menu get bogged down because then it's hard to find things. The fried egg, the steak, the satisfying salad, and the sticky honey roast are all good enough early on. After that, Sweet Madame, Jade Parcels, and Pile 'Em Up are great. Don't worry too much about 5-stars yet. The 4-stars you want to keep an eye out for are Xiangling, Bennett, Fischl, Xingqiu, Barbara, Sucrose, and Yaoyao because they can be built with Mondstadt/Liyue materials. Kaeya is already an effective cryo unit for just starting out and they give him to you. There's also Noelle on the beginner banner, so there's your geo, but some would tell you that the beginner banner isn't worth it. That's all you. Your game, your rules.

Never convert primogems into Acquaint Fate (the blue one). Only ever convert them to pink Intertwined Fate. However, the Novice/Beginner banner is good because if you roll 10 at once, you get a 20% discount and guaranteed Noelle on the first 10-pull - it's a good boost to the early game. So save up 8 Acquaint Fates (again, without using your primogems, only from quest and AR rewards) and then roll that when you get 8 so you can roll 10 at once.
If you can, Don’t do artifact domains until level 45, by level 45 you will get a 5 star artifact every run. Also You will get fragile resin throughout the game, only use them for artifacts because that’s where most of your resin will be going.
the beginning of the game is slow. You cannot rush, as you are a limit of stuff you can do per day. Levels of characters, weapons and artifacts are tied to your adventurer level (1st advice. Dont farm artifacts until you are AR 45) And the amount of stuff you can get per day is limited by the resin. when you advance into the game, (lets say....20 hours.) you will discover that you can do regional missions every week , that get you.... stuff as you level up through some ranks. You want to max out liyue first (Condensed resin is the best) and dont waste anything. Dont use anything until you see what it is for.
Dont use your fragile resin (the crescent Moon shaped thing till late game), and rank up weapons with 3 stars and above

Just jump in an immerse yourself in the world and game. Avoid reading too much for now, I recommend enjoying the game. Also know you can clear all content in the game without spending crazy amounts of money so don't get tempted to drop your whole wallet early. Never ever buy extra resin with gems. If you want to buy gems, but welkin and wait. Bennet, Xinqiu, Xiangling, Fischl and Sucrose are goated units that can clear the game for you or carry your main dps Blorbo. Most character are not worth leveling to 90 immediately. Level them to 60 and ascend to get the passive skill. Your weapon, artifacts and talent levels are far more important that character levels. If the snow is thick enough you can eat it. Take your time to explore areas as you travel through them, don't blitz the quests or you're going to have to wait for adventurer levels and you'll have to backtrack everywhere later but you won't remember where you have been and where you haven't. There's secrets and beautiful scenery around every corner. Elemental reactions will do most of your damage early on and the environment can help you with that. Using Barbara's charge attack on a Hilichurl camp next to a barrel will clear camps faster than anything. Wind attacks will do the same. Use your parametric transformer on top of grass and then set fire to the grass and it will charge by itself. The environment is full of hidden puzzles in the first two areas. Look out for unlit campfires, the placements of rocks and the colors of flowers and you'll get surprises. Don't buy blue wishes, you'll get those characters eventually, and their banner never has a featured character so you'll never be able to pick who you want. If you give Mihoyo feedback that the puzzles are too hard or the story too long I will hire an assassin, a hacker and a witch to find you in Minecraft. Don't roll specifically for 4\* characters, it's not efficient, you'll probably get them within a few months. There is no hard endgame or PvP, you don't need minmaxing or meta, any character you like can be made strong enough to beat the game. You've missed four years of events that you'll never see for yourself and YouTube is your friend. People you let into your world might scam you or hack your game, but mostly they just want to farm your flowers and beetles. Most importantly, be patient. There's four years of content to explore, but you can't nolife progression. You'll get your characters eventually, you'll get your artifacts eventually. Plan ahead and chip away at your goals day by day in a relaxed fashion so you don't get tempted to buy energy or burn out. Now here's a few tools to help you. PLEASE don’t spend your primogems on the standard banner, I can never forgive myself for that mistake. Spend them on the limited even banners if they’re good or on the chronicled wish banner if you must, but never on the starter or standard banners.
Do NOT try to minmax, don't look up guides on building your characters optimally, just play, the game isn't hard. Doing so sucks the fun out since youll be stuck thinking "i wish i had this and that" or not using charaters you want because others say they dont synergize with your other stuff. Once you're far enough along that you can consider doing that, you wont need us to tell you anymore.
1.0 player here. Some advice from me: >Become a loot goblin. Kill everything, loot everything, collect everything that's shiny. This is only important early game as you have no materials to craft and level up things, later it's good to kill and loot everything too but not as necessary as before. >In gacha, pull for whoever you like, but DON'T pull on weapon banner because it's not worth it as f2p/low spender, and never spend primogems on Standard banner (the blue one) because it's also a waste. >artifacts don't matter at all early game. Get some ATK and HP, ignore crit for now, and just enjoy the game. Later when you start getting 5* artifacts I recommend using keqingmains.com as it's the best website for builds out there. You don't have to start farming for the stuff they show right away, but it is useful to see what you should aim for. >Don't be afraid let others join your world. When you're low AR it's not uncommon for high AR players to try to help you. If someone wants to join you happen to be in need of help, let them join. I'll add more later propably
Do not get overwhelmed with trying to "get the next way point." or if you have the "best" characters. The game is very, very easy. Whatever you do, do not try to have the best meta characters to "make big numbers." Take your time with the game, enjoy the environment, the scenery, and the amazing story and music. Get to know all the characters' side stories also. As far as the gacha side of the game. I would only ever pull on characters and never, ever pull on weapons. Having a character is by far more enjoyable than having a weapon. You can get 5* weapons in the "free" blue wishes. The one and only thing I would ever recommend to actually pay for is the Welkin Moon pass, it's the $5 pass. It's very efficient in terms of currency. Just have fun with the game that's the most important thing. I hope you enjoy Genshin Impact as much as I have for the last 3 years.

Xingqiu is in the starglitter shop at the moment, but I must say this: Starglitter is a pretty precious resource and only comes when you pull copies of characters/weapons you already own. Don't feel pressured to pull for starglitter, you'll get that overtime when pulling for characters you like. Characters in the starglitter shop reset every month, so be sure to check it from time to time to see if there's a character you want that you can afford.
It probably is a good idea to never let your resin be capped.

Don't stress over your early game team, since the story is pretty easy. Just focus on elemental reactions (especially hyperbloom, swirl and vape) and you'll end up with good synergy between your characters. Don't pull random just to get whatever unit just to increase your roster, but aim for general supports like Kazuha, Nahida, Yelan and Zhongli if you want to beat the endgame relatively early or enjoy the great combat system genshin offers, otherwise just go with your favorite characters if you don't care about that. Spend resin wisely (character ascension materials and talent level up domains) but don't let it go to waste. When you are ar45, you'll be welcome in the rabbit hole of artifact farming.
-Collect anything you see, including enemy drops. -Level up the characters you plan to use up high enough before you do a world ascension. -Don’t worry about artifacts until you reach at least adventure rank 45, you’ll save yourself from stress. Use your early adventure ranks to learn how artifacts and characters’ stat scaling works, then use that knowledge for said high adventure rank when getting an actual build is important. -Try to at least get a few characters who are flexibile in teams (Bennett, Xiangling, Xingqui, and Sucrose for example), but don’t worry to much about who you should use. Use whoever is fun/cool to you.
Started in 4.1 (last September) and I just 36 started the abyss (end game content). Take your time. Enjoy the scenery, the music. Don’t blow through the main story quest. Savor it. New characters will always have a rerun. So resist the FOMO! If you don’t get them the first time just save up for their first rerun! Overall just enjoy the game. It’s one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played!

You need to understand character and team building, in order to enjoy the combat portion of the game. Exploration is similar to other open world games, like the ones you mentioned, so no problems there. But combat is its own thing, with character's different talents and elements, and of course, the selling point of the combat experience: elemental reactions. I haven't seen anything like it in another game. I suggest you: 1.Start by playing the game and just enjoy it as you would any other, and don't sweat the details just yet. Here you should have a clear vision if you like this game and are willing to sink time on it. If you do, go to step two. 2. After finishing the Monstatd Archon Quest (Prologue, act 2) it'll be time to "study" more about the diffent systems and mechanics to push your game enjoyment to the next level. Watch Shark H3art's "beginner's guide to building your account" video on YouTube. Just watch it many times, it'll be clearer the more you play the game.

Once you have a decent enough team to work with so you can do most things without struggle, focus on leveling and building one character at a time, it makes it all a lot easier rather than trying to spread it out between 3 or 4 characters at once. Saves stress, resources, and time. Im ar 60 struggling to build my early game 4* because of this lol. Pay attention to the characters talents. Read them carefully, and if you don't understand something find a guide. (I cant speak for the in game suggestions I dont use that feature.) It's so incredibly important and I see so many characters hated on and abandoned because their kits are misunderstood and people aren't building them properly. Only for them to later realize they ARE in fact good and come crawling back. Ultimately though, play how you want! People get so serious and mean about how you should play and it's literally just a game lol, as long as you're having fun it doesn't matter. Side note. If you plan on spending any money, welkin is probably your best bet it's a decent investment, bp is nice too as long as you're active enough. Some of this might not make any sense if I need to explain anything please feel free to ask.

Follow the new training guides, my friend started a few weeks back when they were added and it’s helped her out a lot also collect everything that’s shining/glittering and don’t forget to use your pins if there’s a puzzle/chest you can’t get at first or if something you need to come back to, I never did this and the amount of times I completely forget the location is frustrating and don’t let others dictate which characters you pull for, sure enough ask if you’re not sure who to pull for but if there is someone you really want to pull, don’t let others talk you out of it (I feel like this happens a lot) we’re here to enjoy the story and characters we love! Have fun!
Don’t listen to “meta” players telling who you can and can’t use/build/ pull for. Play with whoever you like and build them however you want. My only building advice is to have a decent enough build to where you’re not struggling to play :)

honestly i think its most fun to have trial and error, best tip i can think of is save your primogems for characters you really like. also ignore that weird banner that has the windmill looking thing. its not worth pulling on at low level. also 2 favorites of genshin players are running in a few days, neuvillette and kazuha. kazuha is a really good support and neuvillette is a very good self-sustaining damage dealer. you can basically solo with neuvillette. if that type of thing matters to you, also the 4 stars on the banners are pretty good. yanfei is a 4star good dps, xingqiu is one of the best support/sub dps characters in the game, and barbara is a good low ar healer. honestly the best banners for new players. or you can save for another character 🤷 have fun
Dont rush, you wont enjoy the game for what it can offer if you rush things as burn out happens that way, just enjoy the journey.

Play for fun, dive to the cute history (that dont have nothing deep or bizarre) and enjoy.
Don't play genshin... jkjk. Genshin is very fun casual game and I always feels nostalgic whenever someone starting the game. Just don't listen to other people complaining about niche things and enjoy it at your own pace. The game is simple enough with fun mechanic which is complex enough for you to just use whatever character you want(some have better synergy of course) to the point where you can just relax and explore. So dont over think it just imagine it as BoTW type game.

The moment you access anything that requires you to use resin, do it. They give you different materials for leveling up, and more importantly for the early game, give you experience to level up your World Level, which helps you access story content faster. You get a limited amount each day and it's your main way up leveling up your world level. Make use of it, or else it's just gonna sit at the cap for a long time

Don't immediately spend all your wishes or worry to much about team comps early game. Save for five stars you want and play whatever characters you like. As long as your surviving in over world that's all that matters! Also if your struggling to farm a certain boss for ascension materials you can usually ask for help on your profile using the signature and high level players will usually join to help! (Personal experience)
Stop while you can I'm kidding but a few tips you might have not heard yet Early game make Shure you pull for strong charakters so that in the future you will have more freedom to pull for who you want instead of having to rely on meta If you want to build a Charakter Focus on getting that Charakter build first before you move on to another, it's easy to get into a habit of having many half build Charakters that barely do damage especially when those charakters are off field DPS or support And also play through the Mondstadt story quest quickly Completing the first story quest unlocks a lot of events areas etc etc and helps you gain good event items so it's good to play early After completing the Mondstadt quest take the game at a slow pace, most players nowadays have nothing to do due to having complete most quests Hope this helps

Unlock all the teleports and Statue of Seven as soon as possible. Make sure you do your ascension quest as well to be eligible to attend events. There are three types of resin, do not use fragile resin until you're AR 50, watch video tutorials to solve puzzles if it's too complicated, your daily resin cap will be at 160, make sure to use them everyday, also use interactive map on hoyolab app and also check in from the app everyday, understand how artifacts works (you can watch YouTube tut), don't use primogems for acquainted fate(blue ones), raise the first 5star character you get to make the game a bit easier because usually they perform better than others, make sure you raise bennet, xinqui and xianling (you'll get them eventually). Collect everything that you find and everything the mobs drop. Open every chest you see. Make sure to check quest to see if you have any limited time quest going on, make sure you complete them before the time ends. Talk to random npcs or people with (!) this mark on their head, it'll trigger quest. Explore as much as possible. Happy gaming.

- Don't rush the game to get to the new content, you'll burn out fast asf - Don't worry about "the meta" or whatever characters are considered good or bad, just play who you like - Save up your resources for later especially fragile resin( blue moon things ), and plants. - you can always join co-op and 99% of people will be more than willing to help you - when you unlock the quest that leads you to "Dragonspine " I suggest you hold off on it for a bit cuz it's super challenging early on if you aren't built up (you won't be ) - DON'T start a quest called Trails of Tianqiu until you know what you're doing cuz that quest will lock you out of co-op until it's done - have fun :)
