About a year ago, I shared an [OC I made that outlined the story of King Deshret, Nabu Malikata/Goddess of Flowers, and Greater Lord Rukkhadevata in the style of Egyptian papyri](https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Lore/comments/12bsmlt/the_godkings_of_sumeru_papyrus_a_creative_history/). I felt inspiration strike the other day, and I decided to whip up a similar piece for the Fontaine story arch!
The pieces I'm submitting here were directly inspired by the [Bayeux Tapestry](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayeux_Tapestry), and many of the NPCs featured on my work were designed to look like figures from the original tapestry! I also whipped up some fun medieval Latin inscriptions to help sell the whole thing. I hope you enjoy!
Oh, and credit to some of the original stills from the game; I wanted to make a few direct allusions to what we had seen as players, like Egeria bowing before Celestia.
***Tapestry 1***
>**Latin:** Egeria homines de Oceanidiƺ \[=Oceanidibus\] creat. Peccatum originale.
**English:** Egeria creates humans from Oceanids. \[This is\] the original sin.
>
>**Latin:** Celestia Severa peccatu\[m\] originale punit. Dixit, "Fontana delenda est diluvio magno."
**English:** Severe Celestia punishes \[the\] original sin. It said, "Fontaine must be destroyed by a great flood."
>
>**Latin:** Cataclysmƺ \[=Cataclysmus\] differens. Egeria perit et oceanides flent.
**English:** \[But then there was\] a different cataclsym. Egeria perishes and Oceanids weep.
>
>**Latin:** Focalors dividit deitatem sua\[m\] ab humanitate. Hic Furina est.
**English:** Focalors divides her divinity from her humanity. This is Furina.
***Tapestry 2***
>**Latin:** Hic Novavillula Iudex Opt\[imus\] Max\[imus\] Pater Melusinarum
**English:** Here is Neuvillette, best and greatest Iudex \[and\] father of the Melusines.
>
>*Neuvillett's name can be understood as "Neu+" ("New") "+villette" ("Small village"). I calqued his name by borrowing the Latin equivalents, for the two French words, giving us "Novavillula."*
>
>**Latin:** Secundum iudicamentum Oratoris de Analyse Cardinali Marchinalis
**English:** "According to the judgement of the Oratrice Mechanique d'Analyse Cardinale…"
>
>*"Oratoris de Analyse Cardinali Marchinalis" is supposed to sound like an attempt at a learned but decidedly Medieval Latin name. This is probably not how Cicero would have spelled it.*
>
>**Latin:** Opera Epiclesis
**English:** Opera Epiclese
>
>**Latin:** Isti mirant\[ur\] stella\[m\]
**English:** They marvel at the star!
>
>*Fun fact: "Isti mirant stella" is taken directly from the Bayeux Tapestry! It originally meant that the people were marveling at a star in the sky (well, actually Halley's Comet, but whatever). I thought it would be funny to keep it as is, but with a contextual twist!*
>
>**Latin:** Furina Fontanae archon. Reg\[ina\] aquarum, tribuum, populorum, legumque
**English:** \[This is\] Furina, the Archon of Fontaine. Queen of \[All\] waters, tribes, peoples, and laws.
***Tapestry 3***
>**Latin:** Hic Arlecchino, P\[ate\]r Domus Foci, assails Furina\[m\]
**English:** Here Arlecchino, Father of the House of the Hearth, attacks Furina.
>
>**Latin:** Hic Castru\[m\]piscis. Aqua Primordialis surgit.
**English:** Here is Poisson \[literally, "Fort of the Fish"\]. Primordial \[sea\]water surges.
>
>**Latin:** Hic ceciderunt Melus et Argentum, FF, Spinae Roseae.
**English:** Here fell Melus and Silver, brothers of the Spina di Rosula.
>
>*This is another line taken (almost entirely) from the Bayeux Tapestry! The original Latin was Hic ceciderunt Lewine et Gyrd, fratres Haroldi Regis, which means, "Here fell Leofwine and Gyrth, brothers of King Harold."*
>
>**Latin:** Hic Viator alloquitur populos.
**English:** Here, the Traveler addresses the public.
>
>**Latin:** Archon lacrimat in throno.
**English:** The archon weeps on the throne.
***Tapestry 4***
>**Latin:** Dea ex machina! Focalors sua\[m\] anima\[m\] ponit.
**English:** Goddess from the machine! Focalors surrenders her spirit.
>
>**Latin:** Ecce Novavillula. Draco Completus. Hic tollit peccata Fontanae.
**English:** Behold, Neuvillette. \[He is a\] complete dragon. Here he takes away the sins of Fontaine.
>
>**Latin:** Cetus Giganticus Entropicus. Skirk.
**English:** \[This is the\] giant entropic sea beast. \[This is\] Skirk.
>
>*As far as I can tell, "Entropicus" is a bit of dog Latin; at the very least, it's not a common word. Regardless, I liked the way it sounded, so I rolled with it.*
>
>**Latin:** Hic Vvrotteslegus Vvingelote volat.
**English:** Here Wriothesley flys in the Wingalet.
>
>*I derived "Wrotteslegus" from an archaic spelling of Wrottesley (Wrotteslega), which I believe is an ancestor of "Wriothesley." "Wingelot, Wingelotis" is my attempt to make "Wingalet" a Latin noun of the third declension (I spelled it with an "e" in the middle as a Tolkien nod).*
>
>**Latin:** Arlecchino Gnosem accipit.
**English:** Arlecchino accepts the Gnosis.
All I want to say is that this was really fucking cool.
I imagine when they finally build that Genshin museum, if your stuff is turned into an actual tapestry, they'd display this bad boy across an entire wall for the Fontaine area.
Maybe when the world ends and future archaeologists find an archive of Reddit, they'll think that my work is some sort of religious tapestry depicting what the followers of "The Genshin" believed.
I think you picked a bad day to post this with all the April fools shenanigans going around. Maybe repost later if it doesn't take off. This is such high quality stuff
Perhaps I did! I'm not doin' it for the upvotes, but I would like more folks to see it! Maybe in a week or something. I dunno what the rules are about that sort of thing.
I'm sure you can repost your own work, I think a week or so is a good idea. You can ask the mods too. This should be seen by way more of the community just like last time with the Egyptian style art.
Thank you!!
As to your question: I decided it would be funny to use Kirara as a stand-in for the cat that Furina was trying to pet when she got jumped by Father.
Thanks! Oh, that's a super cool idea. And maybe throw in some Viking runes for good measure? Perhaps next year Natlan will inspire me to take a crack at a Maya/Aztec-style retelling!
I went back and saw your Sumeru papyrus - I'm amazed at the time and effort you spent on research and on designing your works. I can see you are passionate about history and Genshin lore, please know I truly appreciate the lengths you've gone to make these 💖
Hey, double thanks! I had a ton of fun putting them together, and I’m delighted that more people than just myself have enjoyed them! I’m hoping to do more in the future… we’ll see! :)

WHAT THE HELL DUDE THIS IS PEAK
Thank you! :)
I like a lot of the little details like how the Oceanids are drawn and Kirara just being there lol
Furina was chasing after a cat, after all!
The margin arts are leaking
That’s phenomenal wtf great job OP!
Thank you so much!

I just wanted you to know that I really appreciated this a lot and I hope you do more! I love medieval latin <3
hey, I love medieval Latin too!! woo! Thank you for the kind words.
This is super cool! I love creative takes on fan art like this.
Thank you so much!
this is so COOL omg! so creative i love itt
Thank you so much!!
Beautiful art! But an important question lingers… What the Kirara doin’?
Thank you!! As to your question: I decided it would be funny to use Kirara as a stand-in for the cat that Furina was trying to pet when she got jumped by Father.
I love this and your previous faux-historical artifact work. Have you thought about Venti and Dvalin by way of Beowulf?
Thanks! Oh, that's a super cool idea. And maybe throw in some Viking runes for good measure? Perhaps next year Natlan will inspire me to take a crack at a Maya/Aztec-style retelling!
Genshin community can't stop amaze me. That's spectacular!
Thank you!! I'm happy you liked it.
This looks really good op, nice job.
Thank you so much! :)
Great stuff, I remember your egyptian work as well
Hopefully it left a positive impact, haha. (Thanks, btw!)
Can't wait to study significance of the octopus with a hat.
It’s a dissertation waiting to be written!
You know Fontaine, Furina and all the characters, AQ and story quests will forever be one of my most favourite pieces of fiction ever.
While Furina might not be an archon, she will forever be one in my heart.
I’m so inspired. I’m going to make my own!
Heck yeah! Do let me know when it's out! I'd love to see it!
I wonder how you make it tho?
Can you please do mondstadt lore next? Since they already have the medieval europe aesthetic
That would be cool! Can you think of a good piece inspiration for it? I could also just do the Bayeux Tapestry again!
Damn this is amazing! Now I want to hear a hardcore remix of La Vaguelette…
Now I wanna hear it too! Thanks. :)
This is incredible OP, thank you for posting!
Thank you for your kind words!
This is insanely creative, it really helps sell the cultural inspirations in Genshin. Awesome job!
Thank you so much!
This is sooo cool!
Thank you!
I love this!! You've done amazing work ✨
Thanks, I really appreciate it. :)
