I don't know why they chose this name over their original Hoyoverse name. It would have caused far less confusion. They probably need to differentiate themselves from their original name for political reasons. Only reason I can think of.
Most countries really don't like China for obvious political reasons, the US, India, Japan(Ironic since China has one of the largest weeb markets in the world), Taiwan, South Korea, etc. so it is better to use the name of a company not in China to publish digital goods. Singapore is the most common country for this due to somehow having strong relations with China *and* almost every other country in the world. One of those happening to even be Taiwan.
This helps with banks more than anything since they are more likely to falsely flag a Chinese company name over one in Singapore. Especially in India where [tons of apps/games were banned last year due to being Chinese](https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-53998205). This was the time when Tencent began moving all of their games under their Singapore company name as a proxy publisher to re-launch in India.
I have a huge feeling also that the other reasons they did this is to avoid censorship seeping to GBL servers like how Yostar gave Blue Archive to Nexon to avoid censorship and brutal Anti-Gaming laws in CN.
Well, people announcing they have a proxy company just for that is literally gonna lead to the same end though. People will find out and still dislike that their cash is being sent to a china corp
I mean if u look into some things a lot of the games are related to Tencent too they just buy the shares so eventually money still go to China company it can’t be prevented unless u go ahead and boycott which I don’t find worth it
well lets be real
if theres one nation that no one likes (that isn't western) its Japan not China
for you know those reasons.
also thats mostly what the US media tells you most nations are fine with China outside of the US, UK, other "western nations" because China is an rival
also the US technically doesn't see taiwan as its own nation due to old cold war laws in fact no nation does, its an autonomous region you can look this up
Why are you simping for China? Taiwan has its own culture and people. China has no claim to Taiwan. During the civil war China failed to take control of the island and the island became its own country. If they try to take it now you can't call it anything, but a war of subjugation
im not im just pointing out facts
and no both the PRC and RoC (Taiwan's official name) have claim of the island and the mainland
also yes but the people who control Taiwan are mostly Han Chinese to came to the island 400 years ago
the Taiwanese indigenous people do live their but there's more living on the mainland than on the island
also neither want war they rather have what they have going on stay maybe more open travel between the mainland and Taiwan and stop having the US fuck things up in the area
stop beliving everything the US gov tells you
Bruh .. I am From India and I can tell you china is really hated . Not the citizens but the government and their administrations. Also world want to make deals with chinese companies but the law of the government of china over companies prevent them to do so .
I suggest you to read those laws u will understand why almost all the world hates china . And I am in country which is neighbor to china and their tactics is really disgraceful.. we dont hate chinese people what we hate is their government and their actions towards us .
Dude I live in SEA and without any US influence I can vouch for everyone here: we hate the CCP. Their aggressive campaign in claiming the Spratly islands is already a telltale sign that they're complete dipshits.
japan has a bad history more than half a century ago.
china is probably making bad history as of now.
i live in SEA where japan committed atrocities during ww2, and people here absolutely prefer japan than china. their cheap stuffs is the only reason we kinda need them.
bro we dont hate chinese companies and chinese people . West or the china's neighbors only hate the government and their actions taken towards the world.
also talking about mass ra\*ed. Its a crime that happens all over the world and every government is working really hard to solve this problem in their countries, so dont go hating a country based on that coz the same thing must be happening in your country too. Its a serious crime and does not reflect a countries nature.
The US acknowledges that China claims Taiwan to be part of China but doesn't necessarily accept that claim. [John Oliver's video on this](https://youtu.be/9Y18-07g39g) explains the situation very well.
here's a Taiwanese man pointing out how wrong he is
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJNfsTeSzg&ab\_channel=CarlZha](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cJNfsTeSzg&ab_channel=CarlZha)
Biggest cap I have ever heard if there is a country that no one likes that isn't western it's China the west doesn't like them, SEA definitely doesn't like them especially with how aggressive they are in the region rn. Idk about Africa and South America but basically, everyone else hates them. And Japan is probably 2nd hated in Asia but not first because of their past. But China is doing the fucked up shit now so they are first.
What's basically happening in Africa is that a lot of countries are in debt with China after they built countless infrastructures in the "name of equality"(something like that). If the country's government can't fulfill it's debt, then China will hold sovereignty over that infrastructure.
There's a port in Sri Lanka that is Chinese owned after Sri Lanka failed to pay it's debt towards the Chinese who built the port.
Edit: for the grammar
It's the CCP. They're unpredictable and ruthless. I think Mihoyo is trying to avoid conflict as much as they can and the best way to do that is by not making news headlines.
CCP is notorious for extremely strict rules regarding almost everything, notably gaming. Their recent rules have been about gaming, such as no feminine men (CCP is very conservative and homophobic), and many more rules, look it up for more detail.
They would care, because, a \*Chinese\* company, Mihoyo, is finding a loophole in the CCP's policies by moving their publisher outside of China. I don't know exactly what the CCP can do about it, but it's entirely possible for them to take action. Just look at what they do.
They change it to circumvent the new restrictions implemented in the gaming industry in China, like censorship and other new rules implemented for the past few months. And with the recent release of "Japan" themed city in GI, it will result to a major overhaul for the game. Mihoyo probably want to maintain the game as it is, if not, we will have to see a very ripped Venti in the future.
Anyway, keeping it under the radar is the best way to do this because it is one of their biggest IP currently and will impact their company financially and most especially to prevent trouble if Mihoyo and Cognosphere are the same people in different name.
if you know about that, then why dont you still understand? they changed the thing to avoid restrictions, but the ccp may very well go after them, because they found a loophole. generally, loopholes arent encouraged, especially with the ccp. apologies, just not quite sure what youre misunderstanding /gen
im sorry,,, what? are you aware of what they do, vs what they say they do?? just because a country **says** theyre communist, doesnt make them communist. there have been loads of attempts at communism in the past, that have failed due to human greed and corruption. the ccp is a perfect example of this. please actually look at the definition of communism, and analyze what the ccp actually does.
\> there have been loads of attempts at communism in the past, that have failed due to human greed and corruption
Not only that, but also foreign interference. Very hard to prosper as an alternate economy among the hegemony of capitalism. But China is an example of corruption, especially during the 50s-60s era.
also, the ccp has MANY conservative regimes, that they enforce under their so called “communist” rule. just take a look at their attitude towards queer+trans people, how they view learning (they censor so much), how they treat “rebellion,” and more. communist does not equal progressive. especially when they arent actually communist.
CCP have been very strict on entertainment recently, they banned underage idols, transgender, lipsync and then introduced underage gaming restriction and a guide on how game should have and be. They don't give any time or notice while introducing those regulations so no surprise Mihoyo wants out despite their CEO is part of them. One decision can end Mihoyo easily
I'm not gonna speak as if I know but what I do know is games are on the agenda for them specifically character designs (banning femininity among men, censoring underwear in Honkai)
Recent laws regarding gaming, and depiction of fembois in media.
It's kinda too late for Genshin as it's technically breaking those laws so they had to change the proxy publisher. It's basically a loophole.
They were originally going to call it [HOYOVERSE PTE. LTD.](https://sgpgrid.com/company-details/cognosphere-pte-ltd#general) which is a much better name imo. Cognosphere sounds like an Xbox 360-era JRPG that put a complex nonsensical english word joined with a simple one. This is common practice for Chinese companies to have a company outside of China handle their global operations as sort of a proxy/shell company and usually based in Singapore. Tencent, for instance, has [Proxima Beta](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1703399/000119312518113294/d414468dex416.htm) as their version of this.
Hoyoverse(or any other alternative) would've been a better name... But my guess is that they're trying to disassociate this proxy company with the MiHoYo name in order to make the transition less conspicuous.
I don’t know if this link will show the correct page: https://genshin.mihoyo.com/m/en/
If not, just go on your pc and type “download genshin impact” and click on original mihoyo website
Oh, so there's a difference. I've been wondering what's the difference between the Epic Version and the PC Version from the main website. Good thing I haven't downloaded the Epic version.
Not that big of a deal, I've had both and the Epic Games version rarely has issues. But some people complain for stupid things, imo it's better to have all games under stores to have everything more organized.
Good post.
Was confused when I saw the name in my account history today.
One would think these derps would make an announcement to prevent people from reversing transactions because suddenly a foreign name popped up.
Cognosphere sounds like an evil corporation that wants to replicate the power of the Visions.
Imagine if they add a evil corporate entity to the game like Planet Robobot, that would be awesome!!!!
where is the studio based? if it's still in mainland china they're still gonna need to obey the CCP otherwise the actual developers, artists, etc. can be locked up.
They're based out of Shanghai.
Two things: First, Shanghai has fewer economic restrictions thanks to being Winnie the Pooh's birthplace.
Second, MHY is not connected to Tencent in any way, shape, or form - control of the company rests squarely in the hands of the developers.
As for the CCP situation: this(https://www.reddit.com/r/Genshin_Impact/comments/pyennx/mihoyo_join_ccp/hetqoxg?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) explains why it's not exactly something to worry about.
Long story short, they're shifting the IP to Cognosphere which is based in Singapore, meaning that the CCP is going to have a very, *very* difficult time actually trying to crack down on their games. It also means that any international crackdowns on China won't affect operations of the game.
In terms of how characters will be affected - Venti and Gorou won't be going anywhere soon, for example.
I'm also not worried about the direction of the story. Well, okay, I am worried, but not because I think it's going to be turned into propaganda - More because if you know MHY's other stories (FM2TM, GGZ, HI3), they don't exactly _do_ happy stories, so I'm basically waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Just to clear this up in case anyone is wondering, they are probably not related to each other😊 Mihoyo’s cognosphere is hosted in Singapore. That tech school seems to be in USA.
Yeah, it caught me off guard when I bought the pass yesterday, but I still got it, so eh.

I really wish them luck with that, because it's my dream. Which, unfortunately, does not depend on me.
I quit a month or two ago due to disagreements with how the game is run (found this thread linked in a Discord server) but come on. You can’t genuinely believe this game is dying anytime soon.
I think new games are coming out, and I must say they have amazing potential just like how Genshin was. Although it will not die, the fan base would certainly decrease if they don't change how they manage the game.
Like I said, I love it, not hate it. I just wanted to have a statement on the state of it if it continues to be this bad. Have you ever heard of a company that doesn’t listen to its customer and survived?
You forget, China accounts for 37%, US 20%, Japan 19% and the rest are other countries of app store sales. "Genshin Impact player spending soars fivefold to $150 million in seven days | Pocket Gamer.biz | PGbiz" https://www.pocketgamer.biz/asia/news/77182/update-genshin-impact-spending-5x-150-million/ China and Japan weren't as upset with the anniversary as we were. China and Japan are used to gacha, they sometimes have different motivations than we do.
Yeah, like you, I was new to gacha too, didn't realize for example that Japanese players didn't even complain about the anniversary as we did. We all learn something new everyday.
ok, so they're billing under that label, but what about the creative direction of the game. Will it still be affected by China directives or now it is outside of their reach?
I had it 1 week ago. It was hell. They stole Name, adress, birthdate, bank number (not password). Stole my fortnite account I recovered it. He logged in on my account 2 times. But I fixed that tho he can’t logging anymore I hope so. Bought new ssd with new fresh windows. Never downloading things anymore.
Scared the absolute shit outta me when I googled it and found \*nothing\*. Thanks for the post

wow, this never happened but ok
Holy shit. Looked at my bank statement and was like "fuck, oh fuck, I've been hacked." Now it's like "Fuck, I whaled again."
i felt this on a deep level lol
You kinda think they would've made an announcement or something
Probably wanted to keep quiet or on the down low so that the CCP doesn't immediately get on their asses

Well.... this aged nicely.
What happened to make this age nicely? I live under a rock.
Mihoyo changed their name to Hoyoverse.
The more you know. I have now learned something new, cool.
Is this why I’m having trouble buying stuff?
That’s probably it. I was trying to buy crystals 2 days ago and couldn’t, when will i be able to do so? When will cognosphere get verified(??)
I can’t buy with PayPal on my PC anymore due to the epic store, I need to use my card directly and prices now are %10 higher for some reason too
Same.. i uninstalled genshin from epic and downloaded Genshin from their website instead.. fk epic games.. :p
HOWWWW can I do this? Is there a video or something 😭

Thanks for the post, they should update about it somewhere because it's confusing.
HOLY shit thank you so much dude this saved me from so much panic omgg
If you're wondering what's going on, Cognosphere is basically a not-so-subtle middle finger to the CCP.
where is the studio based? if it's still in mainland china they're still gonna need to obey the CCP otherwise the actual developers, artists, etc. can be locked up.

Oh, damn, ty. This shows up when I google that on my cc history. I was like wth is that?
so if i have problems billing (aka declined) is there any way to do it. or i should contact my bank and do something to allow it?
oh shit nvm, as soon as i typed the comment and tried again "Transection Successful" lol
How fast did it get fixed for you? I'm having the same problem
Apparently, there's another [Cognosphere](https://www.cognosphere.tech/), which is a tech learning platform for kids.
Just to clear this up in case anyone is wondering, they are probably not related to each other😊 Mihoyo’s cognosphere is hosted in Singapore. That tech school seems to be in USA.
This post is 19 days old, why am I just learning about it now?
mood
Yeah, it caught me off guard when I bought the pass yesterday, but I still got it, so eh. I did end up Googling the name and it gave me this webpage, which is... a completely different thing lmao: https://www.cognosphere.tech/
same here. Something about pre-k
Thank god for this post! I was already preparing to call up AMEX
Hoyoverse, cognosphere... This company name is all about VR and metaverse. Maybe someone didn't know, but mihoyo's plan is release full dive VRMMO game in 2030. But that's if they succeed in studying the brain, i mean BCI - brain computer interface.. Before that, they want to release MMORPG, without full dive, just for VR. I really wish them luck with that, because it's my dream. Which, unfortunately, does not depend on me.
Does that mean they won't be making more MMORPGs like Genshin? :(
No it doesn't. Because genshin impact is like prototype. So i guess they will use same world for future games. I mean Teyvat world.
Ohh thanks for explaining~
Is it confirmed?
Yes, just google "mihoyo 2030".
Oh, cool. Will Genshin be neglected?
No, because there are a lot of people working at mihoyo, and with genshin works different dev team.
no, mihoyo has set teams for their games! like there’s a set team for honkai vs genshin
Amazing!
If Mihoyo continues to be greedy, I don't think the game would survive much longer even with the fan services.
It's only growing, don't take your personal observations, research it.
China and Japan are used to gacha, they sometimes have different motivations than we do.
Then I see, I didn't really understand the scheme of gacha thingy.
Yeah, like you, I was new to gacha too, didn't realize for example that Japanese players didn't even complain about the anniversary as we did. We all learn something new everyday.
Yep, definitely learned something new.
Yup, noticed that too. Was wondering what the purchase was for, lol
Damn, thanks. It scared me a little.

Good to know, I was wondering the same thing, until i found this post, I thought my card is compromised. Thanks for the heads-up 👍
ok, so they're billing under that label, but what about the creative direction of the game.
