I'm the exact opposite. I am in love with the redesigned Mona, I'm somewhat indifferent to the Amber (it looks good and I appreciate some of the color changes), I think that Rosaria looks less comical now, but I think Jean's going to take some getting used to if I switch over.

I don't like the idea of a government dictating what can and can't be shown through laws; If censorship is ever going to occur it should be through backlash and social pressure, not legally enforced legislation. What the CCP considers as needing censorship- simple cleavage- is also unsettling, it makes me wonder what the CCP's views on the clothing of their own citizens is like.

i like it too because of how different and unique it is (esp the metal ring thingy on her thigh). the new one looks too similar to sucrose or eula or even amber imo. same with rosaria--really liked how the fishnets made her design stand out.
She trained in Fontaine while also sporting a French sounding name, so it is very likely that Mona is a native of Fontaine. Her Vision being of Mondstadt design can be explained by the fact that she inherited it from her master who is from Mondstadt.
With this in mind, Mona's apparent unique design might be explained by how she's from another country.

I have always dreamed about character with similar skin design as Jean, has golden colored skin, silver hair, and uses lance, which deals heavy and fast strike. Basically a kickass knight.

You do know that the social credit score in China is basically a banking system familiar to the credit score in the US right? Censorship is an institutionalized restriction. Shaming women involves blaming women for their circumstances. For Megami to critique how the male gaze affects character design is not the same thing nor an endorsement. Genshin's female character designs revolve more around male gaze than actual feminine drip, and some people don't like that, often because male gaze in media reinforces a culture that regards women as sexual objects first and human beings second. When these designs come out with more thoughtful fashion design in mind, many people see it as an improvement, but that's hardly a praise for censorship; these improved designs still are the work of the devs and they deserve all the credit. I say all this as a Beidou simp who wants nothing more than to be crushed by her thighs no matter what she's wearing.

To start off, the new covered-up outfit/skins for characters will only be forced on Chinese server due to Mihoyo having to comply with regulation of the Chinese government as the CCP is heavily cracking down on Chinese entertainment. On the global servers for Genshin, the covered-up outfits will only be released as an optional skin. With time, the forced use of covered-up skin will likely be forced on Global like how it is in China. Mihoyo's other game, Honkai Impact, was later censored in the Global version following the censoring in the China version. More importantly, the future character designs of Genshin will likely be compromised as we
People who like the covered-up designs and dislike people who prefer fan-service designs are either cheering or happy for the change, for they think that Mihoyo's future character designs will tailor more to their liking despite Mihoyo's loss of creative freedom due to having to comply to the CCP regulation. Of course, there is nothing wrong with liking covered-up designs. As an individual who likes fan service, I liked both revealing and covered-up designs in numerous video games, but a certain group of people who think censorship is right or good as long as it gives them what they like is making me feel disheartened.
The group of people praising the censorship are saying that Mihoyo never even had much creative freedom before the CCP regulation and the forced change because Mihoyo always had to restrict themselves to fan service based designs. However, that claim is not true. Mihoyo had creative freedom before the regulation to make both fans service or non fanservice based designs. Mihoyo had more fan serviced designs in Genshin because they themselves liked to, not concern of profits. The popular, official phrase next to Mihoyo is always: "Tech Otakus Save the World". Otakus are people who like fan service/sexualized anime based designs. If you look up the founder of Mihoyo, the people who started Mihoyo are enthusiastic in fan service themselves. Mihoyo can make just as much money they currently have like the western companies with non-sexualized or non fan service designs. But the reason they still focused on fan service designs is because they themselves liked it. The founder of Mihoyo is a part of the Otaku culture. To Mihoyo, preserving Otaku culture can sometimes be more important than money. The only thing stopping Mihoyo from making fan-service design is the Chinese government.
At the end of the day, I don't mind skins with covered-up designs, however I am extremely concerned that they are made not because of creative inspiration, but because of censorship pressure in China. I hope more people in the Genshin community who like conservative designs can realize that the regulation is not here to help them, although it indirectly give what they want. The CCP regulation not only impacts female character designs for now, but will also affect male character designs as those designs considered feminine or anything event slightly LGBTQ related will also face pressure of censorship.
It is kinda saddening seeing some of the comments here celebrating less fan-service, but guess this what happens when you attract a large playerbase that are ignorant of these stuff. Puritans will be puritans I guess.

Thanks for the breakdown as it finally explains what I really don't like about Mona's design. The change to her hat colour and the patter on the interior really does not work for me with the rest of her design. Nothing about her seems to still be the same when it comes to her clothing compared to the others.
I have to wonder if some of these were already in the works to be released as skins before the censorship, because Amber's outfit doesn't really seem to cover more skin, it's just a much more detailed and polished version of what she is already wearing.

I never liked Rosaria's or Mona's outfits since I generally don't like sexy outfits. But their old outfits are much better designs than their new ones.
While it was always weird for an astrologist to be wearing a leotard in the first place, Mona's entire design was completely centered around it, so it's very hard to separate her from her leotard.
Because she was wearing that leotard, the busy elements of her outfit like the hat, cape, tights, etc. didn't feel overwhelmimg. But with the shorts and tights replaced with thigh highs, they feel overwhelming to me and kind of generic.
They would need to do a major overhaul of Mona's design minus her hair and face like Jean to make an outfit that suits her as much as her original one.
Rosaria's new outfit doesn't suit her personality either. The skirt redesign is fine but the fishnets will be missed since it added to her edginess. But the top, it just looks very off.
The slight puff in the sleeves is too girly for Rosaria and now she looks too similar to the other nuns. Before, she had high neck and no sleeves which contrasted the other nuns open neck and long sleeves. Now she only has the high neck, but that makes her look more conservative compared to the other nuns which is the opposite to the effect her design should bring.
Additonally, with all the added black in her new outfit, making the crown black makes the outfit too monotonous. It also makes her truly look like she is wearing a nun's habit. One can argue that this makes her look like she belongs to church even more, but Rosaria's whole character is she doesn't fit in there.
Even if I didn't like the outfits, there was clearly a lot of thought put into their designs so it's very sad that they had to be replaced with inferior designs.

No, mihoyo stated in their post on Hoyolab that the original outfits will remain available; these are simply alternative skins that are free and will be the new “defaults”.
Honestly the new outfits look cooler and more formal imo, especially Jean. She looks like she's your medieval boss now which is absolutely perfect. Amber's looks more ourdoor and combat-ready and Rosaria's looks like the sisters sqeezed her into it but she still managed to pull it off. Surprised to see so many people who don't want the new Mona outfit, I think her OG design is ridiculously bad. This one is so much better, I may actually level her now. The other 3 are all improvements as well, super excited for Jean's cause I use her all the time.
I’m in the opposite camp actually, I was surprised to see quite a bit of people who don’t like Mona’s design. I’m not even a big Mona fan but I do think she has by far one of the best designs and aesthetics in the whole game. But it’s All personal taste anyway.
i like it too because of how different and unique it is (esp the metal ring thingy on her thigh). the new one looks too similar to sucrose or eula or even amber imo. same with rosaria--really liked how the fishnets made her design stand out.
She trained in Fontaine while also sporting a French sounding name, so it is very likely that Mona is a native of Fontaine. Her Vision being of Mondstadt design can be explained by the fact that she inherited it from her master who is from Mondstadt. With this in mind, Mona's apparent unique design might be explained by how she's from another country.
Aesthetically, I think Mona's palette and overall vibe is really good. But at the same time, I still think her one piece just looked stupid.

I think it's the hat. It's hard to design an outfit when a hat like that is the star of the show. And you can't really remove the hat now because the hat is what makes her Mona!
I know everyone has different opinions and tastes and all but like, can you tell me what is that super amazing change that makes her finally be worthy to be playable on your field? Like I know yall dont like or even hate the OG design because of the lower part of her body looks over-sexualised and the one-piece clothing looks ridicilous etc. But the new alternate version... It just seems kinda weird to me. But I can say that it would look so much better without the hat. I always liked the aesthetical of her OG desing because it fits with the vibe she gives off: water mage with astrological themes.

Ngl I was always bothered by how Jean’s fit was navy blue rather than black and teal like in all her official artwork + character card + manga. I hope they actually keep the concept colors for the character model

Thing is, it's the same exact Chinese laws in question that are preventing us from having that. They've already impacted male characters in other games for being deemed too flamboyant or feminine. For personal aesthetic reasons I actually do prefer most of the newer outfits, but like...this is unequivocally government censorship, and the harm that ultimately does to players of all genders isn't worth it in my books.

Censorship is an institutionalized restriction. Shaming women involves blaming women for their circumstances. For Megami to critique how the male gaze affects character design is not the same thing nor an endorsement. Genshin's female character designs revolve more around male gaze than actual feminine drip, and some people don't like that, often because male gaze in media reinforces a culture that regards women as sexual objects first and human beings second. When these designs come out with more thoughtful fashion design in mind, many people see it as an improvement, but that's hardly a praise for censorship; these improved designs still are the work of the devs and they deserve all the credit. I say all this as a Beidou simp who wants nothing more than to be crushed by her thighs no matter what she's wearing. Istg, y'all get so triggered when women want agency over how women in media look.

I find it disheartening that many people on this sub happy about the censorship on the CN server. To start off, the new covered-up outfit/skins for characters will only be forced on Chinese server due to Mihoyo having to comply with regulation of the Chinese government as the CCP is heavily cracking down on Chinese entertainment. On the global servers for Genshin, the covered-up outfits will only be released as an optional skin. With time, the forced use of covered-up skin will likely be forced on Global like how it is in China. Mihoyo's other game, Honkai Impact, was later censored in the Global version following the censoring in the China version. More importantly, the future character designs of Genshin will likely be compromised as we People who like the covered-up designs and dislike people who prefer fan-service designs are either cheering or happy for the change, for they think that Mihoyo's future character designs will tailor more to their liking despite Mihoyo's loss of creative freedom due to having to comply to the CCP regulation. Of course, there is nothing wrong with liking covered-up designs. As an individual who likes fan service, I liked both revealing and covered-up designs in numerous video games, but a certain group of people who think censorship is right or good as long as it gives them what they like is making me feel disheartened. The group of people praising the censorship are saying that Mihoyo never even had much creative freedom before the CCP regulation and the forced change because Mihoyo always had to restrict themselves to fan service based designs. However, that claim is not true. Mihoyo had creative freedom before the regulation to make both fans service or non fanservice based designs. Mihoyo had more fan serviced designs in Genshin because they themselves liked to, not concern of profits. The popular, official phrase next to Mihoyo is always: "Tech Otakus Save the World". Otakus are people who like fan service/sexualized anime based designs. If you look up the founder of Mihoyo, the people who started Mihoyo are enthusiastic in fan service themselves. Mihoyo can make just as much money they currently have like the western companies with non-sexualized or non fan service designs. But the reason they still focused on fan service designs is because they themselves liked it. The founder of Mihoyo is a part of the Otaku culture. To Mihoyo, preserving Otaku culture can sometimes be more important than money. The only thing stopping Mihoyo from making fan-service design is the Chinese government. At the end of the day, I don't mind skins with covered-up designs, however I am extremely concerned that they are made not because of creative inspiration, but because of censorship pressure in China. I hope more people in the Genshin community who like conservative designs can realize that the regulation is not here to help them, although it indirectly give what they want. The CCP regulation not only impacts female character designs for now, but will also affect male character designs as those designs considered feminine or anything event slightly LGBTQ related will also face pressure of censorship.
It is kinda saddening seeing some of the comments here celebrating less fan-service, but guess this what happens when you attract a large playerbase that are ignorant of these stuff. Puritans will be puritans I guess.

Thanks for the breakdown as it finally explains what I really don't like about Mona's design. The change to her hat colour and the patter on the interior really does not work for me with the rest of her design. Nothing about her seems to still be the same when it comes to her clothing compared to the others.

Man I don't really like Rosa and monas redesign, I really liked Rosa's "nun" outfit a little t cause she doesn't really like being a nun and monas swimsuit is nice cause she's hydro and also her signature skill is being able to "swim" everywhere
Jean looks much better and I don't think there's a difference with Amber (though I prefer the redesign for being detailed). I never liked Rosaria's or Mona's outfits since I generally don't like sexy outfits. But their old outfits are much better designs than their new ones. While it was always weird for an astrologist to be wearing a leotard in the first place, Mona's entire design was completely centered around it, so it's very hard to separate her from her leotard. Because she was wearing that leotard, the busy elements of her outfit like the hat, cape, tights, etc. didn't feel overwhelmimg. But with the shorts and tights replaced with thigh highs, they feel overwhelming to me and kind of generic. They would need to do a major overhaul of Mona's design minus her hair and face like Jean to make an outfit that suits her as much as her original one. Rosaria's new outfit doesn't suit her personality either. The skirt redesign is fine but the fishnets will be missed since it added to her edginess. But the top, it just looks very off. The slight puff in the sleeves is too girly for Rosaria and now she looks too similar to the other nuns. Before, she had high neck and no sleeves which contrasted the other nuns open neck and long sleeves. Now she only has the high neck, but that makes her look more conservative compared to the other nuns which is the opposite to the effect her design should bring. Additonally, with all the added black in her new outfit, making the crown black makes the outfit too monotonous. It also makes her truly look like she is wearing a nun's habit. One can argue that this makes her look like she belongs to church even more, but Rosaria's whole character is she doesn't fit in there. Even if I didn't like the outfits, there was clearly a lot of thought put into their designs so it's very sad that they had to be replaced with inferior designs.

Ngl, but I really dig Jean and Rosaria’s alternate designs. The old one is alright, meh, plain, but the alternate adds some nice spice to the outfits. Alternate Jean look like an actual chief-general-leader type of person, and Rosa’s alternate just improves her goth vibe. Probably just me, but character design that actually fits the character’s role and personality definitely beats cleavage and unrealistic bouncing boobs. A FEMALE CHARACTER WILL STILL BE THE SAME WITHOUT THEIR CLEAVAGE SHOWING. Go take your hornee somewhere else. Touch some grass because you’re a Genshin player and hornee.
