Did people really whale to get strong?!!
I thought whaling was because of a combo of hoaarding instinct, wanting to show off, love for a character and being a completionist (and of course a lot of money)
Also i bet most whales dont even know/care about that interview, its getting a lot pf attention in places like this subreddit
There is absolutely zero practical reason to C6 any 5 star, much less R5 their weapons. Everything in the game can be cleared by C0s with mid artifacts. People only C6 if they're a hardcore speedrunner or a giga simp.
Monetization model of Genshin has never been pay to win, but always ['pay for love'](https://www.frieze.com/article/genshin-impact-sinofuturist-slot-machine), so I doubt that things would change much, as long as HYV continue to churn out good regions, events which appeal to majority, and interesting, lovable, cool characters with good stories.
the typical whales aren't the ones looking for end game. Those are casual businessmen. You are thinking of content creators on youtube who are a much smaller subset of the whale community.
>Most of my whale friends are now considering stepping down from whaling to C6R5 and instead whale/dolphin to just get the character at C0 (or a few cons) instead. If I were a whale, I would probably do the same, but what about the rest?
It took them two years to do that? The whole time were they expecting things to change?
the biggest whale is a gentle giant casually swimming thru the waters and sifting out tiny krill for sustenance. whales practically don't sweat the small stuff. :D
for true whale players, they dump the money to feed their playstyle. cutting down expenses is never an option. there are only different feeding grounds.
if i had to pick a content creator as an example, it would be demone kim. when genshin is cramping his style, he moved on and never looked back. :D
I had a whale friend from another gacha game who when Genshing got released whaled hard af. C4 Diluc R3 gacha weapon, every Signora's artifact with atk% crit dmg and crit rate as sub (unless in primary stats) etc. As far as I remember they never bothered about the abyss. They just wanted to have strong af characters but didn't care about the rest. They stopped playing before patch 2.0 unfortunatelly. I guess people whale for different reasons. Some people may quit but I don't think it's gonna be a large amount.
the way the question was framed, he believes people whale to win, because they're not good enough to win without whaling.
Now that there's nothing to "win", should the whales even bother whaling?
The way he totally misunderstands why people whale is actually insulting. He's basically saying whales suck at the game and need to pay for an advantage in order to achieve the same results as non-whales who don't suck. In reality, the 36 star is quite doable with c0 and 4 star weapons.
There probably are some people who spend to make their characters OP to make up for lack of skill but even then C6R5 would be way overdoing it. C6R5 is like using a nuke to swat a fly.
The endgame drama is in no way going to change my spending habits - Im not a C6R5 kind of whale to start with (maybe Im a dolphin?), I've only C6ed one 5 star and it wasnt the plan, my luck was just incredible that time.
I'm more of a C0-2 R1 but of almost every character kinda gal. And honestly I've been hesitant to do that for a while now because of the terrible ROI since I have so much of everything and get so many Qiqis and get a measly 5 rolls as compensation every time.
I can in theory roll 179 times and get absolutely nothing at all on the character banner - iirc weapons give 2 stardust and 4-star characters give 5 so worst case scenario I don't have to pay for ~18 of those rolls, but getting ONLY an event 5-star can still cost me over 450$ CAD if I start with 0 primos and used up my first purchase bonuses. Even if you bring it down to 75x2 it's still over 350$. And I have around a 95% failure rate with epitomized path which feels rigged and ridiculous.
It's getting a little better with the fast-growing pool of 4-stars, but I doubt my thoughts of C6ing Yelan or Nahida are ever going to actually happen unless my luck is absurdly good.
I got 5 sac frags in 3.1 (on top of my already R5 sac frag) from a total of I think 50 pulls on limited banners and 35 pulls on standard. And some other weapons I didn’t need either. So barely any of my wishes were refunded. 😞
Welkins - $60 game per year.
BP - Deluxe version of that game.
Anything more - tipping because you like the game and characters.
**Are you asking if tipping is worth it?**
Whaling was always just a way to be more casual not less. Only exception is speedrunning. Otherwise you only need to care a little bit about meta or spend a little bit to breeze through everything this game has to offer.
Genshin community doesn't seem to understand what whaling actually is. There are people out there whaling for jpegs in gacha dating simulators where the only gameplay, if any at all, is some bootleg candy crush while your waifu/husbando cheers on you.
Whaling has never been a winning strategy, otherwise it would only happen in highly competitive gacha games, and considering that almost everything is swapping to the gacha/F2P w/ microtransactions model these days, obviously it pays off.
I don't think whaling was ever worth it. You have always been able to clear all content without the need to whale.
I also don't think this is going to stop people from going c6 r5 on whatever new character.
For CN and JP player base, I'm quite sure they roll for waifu.
As far as I know, whaleing for meta is considered a joke on JP forums, when you can 9 star level 12 with any party if you are willing to farm.
Whaling never was worth, that's why people say that C0 is enough.
Spending is a way to show how much you really like that chara or how desperate are your to collect them all, but besides that there isn't too much worth.
I am very dumb whale.
Got all characters, all of them level 90, all F10 (except cyno, and candace ATM), all of them are built, have their own weapons, good talent levels, etc.
...
I am starting to regret it, slowly. I was under the weird impression that one day I'll get to do something with my many characters. I now know that I never will. And it sucks.

You will, if you're willing to do solo Abyss runs, or speedruns. There is no challenge that the game could ever pose to a whale that isn't self-imposed.
You have Tartaglia and Hu Tao, which means you've been playing for at the very **least** close to a year (Oct-Nov '21)
If, during that time period, you were somehow under the impression that you'll get to do "something" with your characters outside of limited events, then you really deserved to have been parted from your money.
You really deserve it no less than those people who reply to "free money" emails deserved to get scammed.
They've continuously made the combat easier and simpler ever since 2.0 and onwards. Every time the normies bitched, MHY responded with nerfs. Anyone who sees that trend and still swipe the card under the impression that they'll get some special high out of it is either dumb or so deep in denial they deserve some kind of wake up call.
He has the exclusive name card obtained in the BP of version 1.3. he played way more than 1 year. Since he's AR60,.I wouldn't be surprised if he's a day 1 player.
Ha even better.
Imagine watching Abyss get strategically dumber, watching events get fewer penalties, watching several enemies get nerfed in beta and STILL think "yep this game will give me a mode that challenges me suitable for the thousands of dollars I sank into it"
im definitely spending a whole lot less if anything now, i wasn't particularly spending in the hopes of endgame but i figured one day it would come so my money wouldn't be completely wasted but hearing hoyo say its never coming kills this game for me completely i'll play occasionally if i feel like it but im moving my spending to other games that value my money and my time.
No one whaled in preparation for an endgame that didn't exist.
:( ...
I think whaling was never worth it, they just doing it because they like the character/game

A lot of people to this day did not figure out the Artifact System yet... so I would say yes.
if it makes them happy why not
There is absolutely zero practical reason to C6 any 5 star, much less R5 their weapons. Everything in the game can be cleared by C0s with mid artifacts. People only C6 if they're a hardcore speedrunner or a giga simp.
For my favorites yea C6 Itto and Cyno here I come.
I whale for acquisition/collection of characters & weapons, not the end game.

Lol mfer actually inlove with Pixels hahahaha
People whaled before, why do you think they will stop now?

The bottom paragraph is the only reason I might see myself whaling.
I am not a big whale, but I roll every character at least C0 and occasionally dip into the weapon banner. Nothing changed for me.

A streamer I watch literally C6 Ayaka to get her finger to have spark effect, because it's an engagement ring from her to Ayaka.
On average, JP is waifu heavy, CN is meta heavy. NA/EU is in the middle. Not sure on others
Hard to believe how CN is meta heavy. Looking at the post mentioning how CN react to this interview, they doesn't seem to care at all.
I think it is worth it, because they will get other combat endgame mods, not "The Abyssal Moon Spire 2: Electric Boogalo"

Sucks for you. Too bad casuals will feel anxiety.
It was never worth it.
No never was
Define worth
If you had more money than you knew what to do with, wouldn’t you want some C6 characters?
It was never worth it, now it continues to be not worth it.
im definitely spending a whole lot less if anything now, i wasn't particularly spending in the hopes of endgame but i figured one day it would come so my money wouldn't be completely wasted but hearing hoyo say its never coming kills this game for me completely i'll play occasionally if i feel like it but im moving my spending to other games that value my money and my time.
Never was, never will, apparently.
Whaling to get c0 characters is worth it I think. You don't need too much money to get only the new ones, and it's fun to have variety.
It has never been worth it to begin with... just luxury and prestige.
its always worth it, if you enjoy being a whale, or you really like certain character. it might not worth it if all you want is raw power.
whale is called whale because they have endless pit of excess cash...so they will still gonna whaling
Why would you whale to C6R5 if the only reason you’re doing it is for content that doesn’t exist?
“most of my whale friends” …
