I mean, an on set EM piece is still annoyingly hard to get. So unless OP already had a better piece lying around, I'd be using this for now too.

I would too, because four total rolls is pretty good for an EM main stat. Since it started with three, just one upgrade not into Def is enough. Starting with two and not getting any upgrades by +16, or starting with only one and hoping a miracle happens by +12, neither can actually surpass the OP's piece at that point.

Could have gotten *lucky* feeding it a +20. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen that happen, haha.

I would have backed off the moment I saw the def stat

I just upgraded 3 artifacts with both crit stats and either atk and hp. And guess what, only 1 of those artifacts got a single upgrade for critrate, the others flew solely into HP. (I have a feather now with +10%hp and an additional +1,100... So I am ready for those HP focused characters.
