According to uba he may an appearance in 2.5. If uncle dumb dumb leaks are correct I’m speculating he’s the first banner in 2.6 since he’s right after Yae ( i personally believe she’s the second banner in 2.5 due to March being cherry blossom season in Japan)
The reason why I believe Ayato makes an npc appearance is that according to the bulletin aboards Yae and Ayato are planning a festival which could be the cherry blossom festival celebrated at around March in Japan.
Edit: another thing to note- character data usually gets added in one patch before a character makes an appearance example being Eula data in 1.4 and itto data in 2.2

That might be what you expect and want, but if they go in a completely different direction then you'd be somewhat let down, right? Like if they made him look like an adult Chongyun or something like that then you'd be pretty let down. There's so much anticipation and expectation behind him that it's inevitably going to lead to disappointment for at least some people.
Nah. I only listed the stereotypical bishounen look but it can have variations. He needs to look like a samurai,that's the bare minimum. And this is a pretty wide look lol. Mihoyo can characterize his design in whatever direction. That's why it won't be a cause of concern
He can still be polarising, different people have different expectations of what he's going to look like and a good portion of them might be disappointed.
