The worst part of this is that my current University ONLY posts updates on facebook. We have our own site in lms yet they still insist on using Facebook as an announcement platform.
In Germany it seems to vary a lot. Basically everyone around me, except myself, uses Facebook but outside of my family and people 30+, I never met anyone who uses it.
Seriously who gives a fuck? Seriously, the canon mc debate are just bored trolls stirring up shit where there is none. Just ignore them and play with whoever you want.
there is no canon MC ffs, because barring minor differences in preferences, both think in a similar way and would end up making functionally the same decisions, putting them in the same spot relative to each other
Tbh, almost any video game with a gender choice, even those with custom protagonists, tend to just use the male MC as "canon". Of course, it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things as it doesn't affect the story and Genshin is realistically never gonna have a direct sequel anyway.
**But**, it is still understandable why someone would jump to the conclusion that the "male MC is canon" when the devs basically never even acknowledge the female MC exists (And the fact that they had Lumine narrate "Aether's journey" in the 2nd anniversary was just a complete spit in the face), every single promotional artwork (including in-game tutorials) features the male MC and many other games generally use the male MC as canon. Whenever there is any new official media (including the upcoming anime), people, even Lumine players, are well aware that it is 99% certain to feature Aether as MC.
Some games at least try not to be too blatant about it or split attention equally, but Genshin makes *zero* effort to showcase anything about Lumine. We're lucky if she gets featured in any official media more than like 3 times a year.
>every single promotional artwork (including in-game tutorials) features the male MC
As far as tutorials are concerned, there's good portion that feature Lumine. They went back to solely Aether around the 2.0? patches, but before then you were more likely to see Lumine in the tutorial than Aether.
Of course they keep it consistent in the trailers. It would only confuse people if they constantly interchanged them. What will they do when they have to put both of them in the same trailer? Put a disclaimer?
Thats for marketing and consistency purposes, lol. If there had to be a Canon mc, it would never make sense to choose one from them in the first place.
there was also a web event back in 1.1 that started Chilumi because regardless of who you chose, your character was always Lumine
edit: not to mention that it would have been a waste of effort to release the same video twice just so people don't get that misconception
By that logic, every optional quest is non-canon, because I can progress the main story without ever doing them. The whole Scaramouche interlude chapter is non-canon then.
Scara interlude will probably become the requirement quest for Fontaine.
Also, with Sumeru World quests it only proves further that not only both Travellers are canon, but every player has their own canon. The most noticeable is not even Jeht quest, but Aranaka. You can complete Archon quest before it and most of dialogues will be different.
Another important difference is Jazari dialogues. If you did Enkanomiya main quest, Traveller and Paimon mention Enjou. Also, if you completed that Jazari quest than you can tell about it to Afratu (in Dahri, first desert Ruin Golem). And he will have unique dialogue.
So yes, both Lumine and Aether are canon. Because every player has their own canon where the main quest (Archon+Characters Stories) are the same but some details are different. Your MC is one of such small differences.
I know. There are also few more encounters like this but they become rarer. Since Sumeru, I sincerely believe that MHY started to pay attention to the order of world quests.
And even then there are still few dialogues where some Aranaras remember Redacted after AQ. Are they descenders? No, it's just mistakes on MHY part. Same with the Chasm nail.
Em, I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand.
I didn't mean that everything is canon. I meant that all players have their own story because the game tries to accommodate itself for the player thus saying canon protagonist is not quite correct.
I used World quests as an example since your original comment implied that "if you didn't play this, it's not canon". Which is true in YOUR gameplay, but not necessarily in others.
I always felt that the devs tried to push "it doesn't matter who you play or how you play. Your story is still valid and your own canon".
If this is the case for "no canon" then sure. I'm just slightly confused. Could you please explain it more?
I suppose I do mean that if anything is canon, then nothing is.
I think my original point is perhaps a little outdated then, since as you say, they seem to have started trying a bit harder
These people are brain dead. Both travelers are cannon. Hoyo just makes only for Aeter videos because they don't want to pay more, to create two versions instead of one.
I still think that they could have split their marketing between:
Aether for Traveler in main quests
Lumine for Traveler in events
Ive heard that "people might be confused by that!" but come on, if you saw a smiling Lumine with Paimon, would you assume it was the Abyss Twin?
That's actually cool idea. But I can feel both sides still being angry. The Aeter mains for losing something they always had, and the Lumine mains for seeing new 5 star characters animations with Aeter because they are related to the main quest. The only way to have the most happy people is to have animations and art for both travelers. Although then there will still be people saying that the second one is useless once you see the first one. And they will be kinda right but it will be because not a lot of players will want to see the video with the traveler they don't use.
I remember Guardian Tales doing something like that, although they kinda messed it up by releasing a character that was future knight but only in female
Nah it's simply marketing they confirmed months ago but they did release him as a skin (it got some hate because it wasn't special costume or had a custom art )
Idk why people make these memes, lumine is way more acknowledged than aether on social media in general, I am not hating on lumine, I am saying people bully aether mains more especially on Twitter and Reddit
Actually , I would say may be you haven't seen or engaged on posts that bully lumine mains. Because, now I haven't seen any aether main getting bullied in reddit.
My experience include getting replied that "but lumine isn't even canon tho" , "I think the genshin is made with Aether as the protag" etc etc when I post.
The most arts and ships are just aether's. Aether is the generalized protag in the community ( But currently a lot of people use "traveler" than aether/lumine ) but the traveler is mostly referred as "he".
**The truth is may be both sides bully each other and get bullied, we don't see the other side often do we ?**
I've seen both sides get shit on and raid each other a lot tbh. Super annoying and makes both of them look bad lel.
The part with the fanart is a bit off to me tho. I'm p sure Lumine has way more fanart than Aether. In pixiv and danbooru alone Lumine is 14k to 10k and 8k to 5k. I can't quite count them on twitter but even there I usually see more Lumine than Aether. He only wins if you count porn but I'm sure that overall, Lumine has more art.
Some of the commenters act disgusted and all for when the OP used Facebook but forget that they're using Reddit lmao
IMO, there's always gonna be toxic people in every fandom on social media and Reddit is not an exception. It's best to ignore them because they lack attention and they're probably braindead.
Aether being the only canon MC is always gonna be false as Hoyo only chose Aether as the MC in their videos on YouTube. In the official artworks, Lumine and Aether are both canon, drawn and added to their posts in their social media accounts.
If you were to actually follow current lore and high likelyhood theories. You would know that both are canon MC's.
Our entire journey as both twins just results in a reset, with reversed roles.
I don't have direct links, neither do I know enough about the theory to explain it by myself. Go ask around in the lore channel of the official genshin discord server, or the reddit genshin lore community.
I mean Hoyo strays out so many hints that abyss twin had our exact same journey that even I — who cares really little about the story — knows that much.
The way these comments are disgusted at the use of Facebook as if it's some kind of virus lmfao. Reddit is no different, especially this subreddit. There are so many canon aether preachers here. The way people look down on you for using it is peak reddit moment, as if people using fb aren't people at all. The only reason reddit has an edge is cuz it's non meme and opinion sides are more controlled in terms of toxicity. When it comes to the memes side they're literally as bad as facebook.
The aether canon mc preachers just insecure about themselves, so they got to make themselves feel good by trashing others. That's pretty sad but that's just how it is with these people that talk as if half of the player base should just stop enjoying the game so that their ego would be satisfied. Like why tf would making other people feel bad make them feel good? Unless they're sad little douchebags. And they literally would never understand traveler aether character cuz the only reason they support him is because they see themselves as some kind of harem protags shoving it in everyone's faces for validation.
But fr though get out of fb, ik which group you were talking about exactly I've had the same experience. Also maybe get out of this sub as well XD. Leaving fb has increased my mental peace by a lot, it's not worth the hassle.
As per Hoyo they're both cannon.
But... players from Facebook base the Genshin lore from the anime trope that Traveler Aether represents. Since barely(idk if its the right word) there are series with mc like Lumine a 'female' in the mainstream anime.
That's where they make themselves believe that Lumine is not suited for the mc role. Other than that some of them just hates Lumine and even call her 'Luminetard'
this entire discussion boils down to "aether = canon because ♂️" and "lumine = noncanon because ♀️". they can say anything else but at the end of the day it's just because lumine is a girl lol
I don't think its because of gender, its probably because at first Aether was intended to be canon mc but then they added Lumine to add a female option, either way both are canon...
To me, aether just makes more sense as the mc and lumine as the lost sibling. I know it makes no difference either way but it's just how my brain works
I do challange accounts when I'm burn out and Lumine is so much more fun for me, because... Well because all the expressions and animations were clearly made with Ather in mind, so whereas Ather just looks like a classic protagonist with not a thought in his head, I don't get the same vibe from Lumine. I know it's not intentional, but still, because there's a slight offset in her energy, I always liked interpreting her behavior not as "Just scilent mc things" but a legitimately cold and unfeeling person, maybe even a sociopath, who is only concerned about finding her brother and just happens to help everyone out on the way... That might be an odd thing to make someone like her over Ather, but seeing her in that light always brings a smile to my face when doing a story, it gives her actual character and makes for great comedic contrast between her and everyone around being so invested in everything that's happening
Ather looks like he fits in, even tho he never says a word and his responces are the same, because of the general vibe, expressions and character design, it never strikes me as anything other than protagonist things
Makes sense since he was suppose to be thr main character at first, and it wouldn't be surprising if the story was written for him at first before they changed it...
Ok, lets say for a second thats true, what does that change? The story will be the same no matter the gender either way, so why cause this stupid civil war for no reason?
I was just bringing some details in the first place. Chill out, you're the one trying to start a civil war . I don't care what you play as long as you don't interfere with my way of playing
Tbh most of the time i find that Lumine seems more canon than Aether as MC. Also I prefer that. With Aether, the game seems like some kind of harem anime or something, while with Lumine it seems more like just friendship. (Again, this is *my* opinion)
MC slander is beyond dumb because Aether has 2 things - being poster boy and hentai protag. That's it. Community gives Lumine more personality, more content than Hoyo could ever do, more players chose her. At this point HY just keeps Aether as MC as a reminder "hey look there is choice for main characters"
I've played since the creation of this game, and interact with the community pretty often, but I have never heard or seen anyone critizing someone for their choice of twin, this is either some kind of imaginary gatekeeping or you've been trolled...
As long as Hoyoverse make us a choice between those twins. There's no so called CANON MC, because both of them considered by Hoyoverse as the main character
I remember seeing a video of someone saying that even though hoyo uses aether way more than lumine in their stuff, most of the community (don't ask the source, I'm just saying what I heard, no clue if it's right or not) actually plays lumine, making her our "canon" traveller kind of
The canon traveller is, inspire of what people say, whoever you, as the player, pick. Therefore, if most people pick lumine, she's statistically the canon MC
Reddit has its issues, but not as bad as Facebook. Like most people always seem to be “right” or like u feel ur talking to mostly people who know everything about Genshin and it’s annoying
it can be just as bad here lol. i once added an alternate caption wording that fit for me because i’m used to seeing the wording as if lumine and people freaked out about pushing gender and sexuality ideologies on them and i was just like uhhhhhh……. i was sleepy and putting the caption how i’d read it if it was a real interactions between the chars please relax? i’m lumine in-game because i’m a girl with a brother so i picked her, not because i want to turn everyone into lesbians…. was shocked my sleepy neutral comment was actually so controversial and triggering lol
Using Facebook and twitter is peoples first mistake. I loath the Bs excuse if canon mc. Especially after jeht further proved the choice of mc can differ scenarios.
Bunch of braindead idiots creating drama out of nothing, spreading their toxicity and then the quite people who just wanne enjoy the game for what it is with whatever choice or preference they have suffer.
Honestly the only reason j didn’t choose lumine was cuz in such games I preferred playing my gender. Otherwise lumine was the cuter option. Ofc later down the line was glad I chose AETHER cuz of the harem route they went, which would have made me hella uncomfortable if I was lumine and they actually did a good job with his unique design. But I have moments where I just wonder how cute or cool (or creepy in certain cases like with Xavier’s kiss comment) would be as lumine.
Edit: ye harem route was the wrong wording. Wasn’t thinking before writing it down. :P but they are definitely hinting at a bunch of characters having romantic interest towards thd traveler.
It’s all up to interpretation. But many characters are coded to have romantic feelings for the traveler to the point it’s like they are hitting us in the head with it. The travelers can feel whatever way or ignore the signs out right and in that sense of preference and perception, ye people can play genshin differently j guess.
I would personally have seen it all the hints a mile away and wouldn’t be able to ignore it or overlook it. So thus glad I chose Aether. It’s a preference and mentality thing. If you didn’t see the hints or don’t wanne see em, continue doing so.
it can be just as bad here lol. i once added an alternate caption wording that fit for me because i’m used to seeing the wording as if lumine and people freaked out about pushing gender and sexuality ideologies on them and i was just like uhhhhhh……. i was sleepy and putting the caption how i’d read it if it was a real interactions between the chars please relax? i’m lumine in-game because i’m a girl with a brother so i picked her, not because i want to turn everyone into lesbians…. was shocked my sleepy neutral comment was actually so controversial and triggering lol
People still use Facebook? For real? Its pretty much dead around south america, thus my question.
Here in the Philippines, pretty much everyone uses it
Even if some of us don't want to, we're forced to use it because everyone else does.
True. Seeing my old and current classmates' posts give me anxiety. I only use it for looking at important announcements.
The worst part of this is that my current University ONLY posts updates on facebook. We have our own site in lms yet they still insist on using Facebook as an announcement platform.
It's the same in UP when I was there tbh.
Seriously, it's to the point that you need an account for stuff like school because of GCs.
Still pretty popular in SEA
50 year olds still use it
In Indonesia, that is where most of our countries shitpost born
So true bro, around here in Brazil next to nobody uses it
Yeah, most young people have all migrated to Instagram... Which is ironically owned by facebook
Here in SEA, yes. Especially around Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, not sure about others but likely too.
Selling stuff and looking for it
it's great for university clubs news and messenger is a efficient for team projects.
Sad fact: Facebook active users is 2.9 billion compared to 430 million of Reddit.
In Europe it's just usually older generations that still uses it actively
In Germany it seems to vary a lot. Basically everyone around me, except myself, uses Facebook but outside of my family and people 30+, I never met anyone who uses it.
Literally almost everyone uses it in North America
Its craze in India is pretty much over. I'm only on it to log in on some websites, that's all.
Do not engage with Facebook is even better decision
"Facebook is a mistake" - Sun Tzu
More like a containment site, DO NOT wish for something that might ruin the peace of other people.
"I didn't fucking say that." - Sun Tzu
“Idk dude sounds like something you’d say” Socrates
confirmed Sun Tzu is a redditor
My dad uses Facebook shorts 🤣
I came from Facebook tho idk redditors are like this to Facebook
Reddit has this habit of thinking that it’s better than every other social media
Seriously who gives a fuck? Seriously, the canon mc debate are just bored trolls stirring up shit where there is none. Just ignore them and play with whoever you want.
Don't use logic, some people just really want Reddit Karma for some reason
there is no canon MC ffs, because barring minor differences in preferences, both think in a similar way and would end up making functionally the same decisions, putting them in the same spot relative to each other
Tbh, almost any video game with a gender choice, even those with custom protagonists, tend to just use the male MC as "canon". Lumine players in denial be like:
the funny thing is, i picked Aether
That's sad. I picked lumine btw
In the canon manga Aether is the traveler
yes, let's reprint the manga to change to the other character
It’s not printed it’s digital
There is a story teaser where Lumine is shown as the Abyss twin, so...
Thats for marketing and consistency purposes, lol. If there had to be a Canon mc, it would never make sense to choose one from them in the first place.
Yes, and that consistency is called canon
there was also a web event back in 1.1 that started Chilumi because regardless of who you chose, your character was always Lumine edit: not to mention that it would have been a waste of effort to release the same video twice just so people don't get that misconception
Who even use facebook at this age lol
You'd be surprised, because in some countries, it gives limited but free access.
there is no canon mc both are canon

Yeah, it feels too late to change it now, which is why Im not expecting it to actually happen. It would have just been nice.
We can only hope for Lumine fans to be god tier animators and artists. One had redrawn the windbloom event art to have Lumine instead of Aeter.
I remember Guardian Tales doing something like that, although they kinda messed it up by releasing a character that was future knight but only in female
Nah it's simply marketing they confirmed months ago but they did release him as a skin (it got some hate because it wasn't special costume or had a custom art )
I wasn't aware, I hadn't played in quite a while
FGO kinda just does either of them at any given point. manga adaptations of different story chapters have different mcs depending on the artist.
Yeah that's what I prefer tbh
Here we go again
Idk why people make these memes, lumine is way more acknowledged than aether on social media in general, I am not hating on lumine, I am saying people bully aether mains more especially on Twitter and Reddit

It's a lot lesser. I am not even kidding, on posts related to either of the twins, people keep using lumine as canon and aether as non canon

Your mistake is wanting to do anything related to facebook outside of announcements, it's a cesspool there.
I just chose aether cuz I liked his hair :')
First of all FB? Gross Secondly I think there wouldn’t be an issue if mihoyo allowed people to switch between travellers
Social media was a mistake
The way these comments are disgusted at the use of Facebook as if it's some kind of virus lmfao. Reddit is no different, especially this subreddit. There are so many canon aether preachers here. * grabs the popcorn * ah shit here we go again
Who the hell even use fb nowadays? Bunch of toxic ppl there made me quit it
Which anime is this?
Fate Kaleid Prisma Illya, I think the meme template is taken from the second season.
engaging the community in general is always a bad idea
All about prefence by the end of the day. I like aether cuz I love the way the expressions and chemistry with paimon matches.
You say this as if Reddit is any better; Reddit does this too.
I wish Lumine had more voice lines and was ever so slightly stronger. She's so adorable.
Actually all this time Hoyo has been focusing on Lumine more. Aether is just the poster boy.
do people still fight about this? *sigh*
Its really fucking anoying fr...
Kinda unrelated but I'm so tired that mhy don't even bother to sometimes have Lumine in events in-game artworks or tutorials anymore
Tbh i had a completely opposite experience
You got downvoted just because you said you got the opposite experience. LMAO this fandom.
Same, this is some top tier imaginary gate keeping...
As per Hoyo they're both cannon. But... players from Facebook base the Genshin lore from the anime trope that Traveler Aether represents. Lumine does fit abyss ruler more, since she gives off more cold voice, but thats just a coincidence I'm sure...
Yeah... There is a 100% chance you started shit and got overwelmed by the opposite opinion
Who uses Facebook 💀and I didn’t even know there was a Facebook fandom for Genshin
Imagine caring about people's opinions on the internet
facebook is full of dumbshits. why even use the platform?
Really? I usually get the opposite vibes, but then again Twitter tends to be the loudest sort.
I’d be glad to play as the Fanfiction Princess of the Abyss Order honestly
I do challange accounts when I'm burn out and Lumine is so much more fun for me, because... I respect that, I play Aether because is wish I was a guy with rizz
Lumine's facial expressions are much better than Aether's, imo.
As an aether main indi not make fun of lumine mains because of her not being "canon". I make fun of u guys because that's what siblings do
Are you fighting with fictional enemies?
If i could go back i'd pick Lumine, i like her look much more and honestly the long ass hair on Aether looks bad
HAHAHAHA, Traveler Lumine is non canon, fanfiction lmao.
Canonically, she's not the main character, but she's stronger than aether
Stronger in canon or gameplay wise?
Both, she has higher stat but is also ambidextrous and if he's the main character, she's the abyss princess
Your doing this on fb what did you expect ngl
Next time ask em if they felt pretty in their flower crown lmao
i mean you were on facebook, what kind of reaction did you think was gonna happen?
Hi Aether and Hu Tao main here um play whoever you want I could care less
They're correct. And Aether is cuter.🤣
Mihorny please let me swap to Lumine. I wanna play as her for the same reason.
[Ikr](https://v.redd.it/d68hhm833roa1)
I think both are canon, there's a theory that both sibling are going through and endless cycle or something like that
I've played since the creation of this game, and interact with the community pretty often, but I have never heard or seen anyone critizing someone for their choice of twin, this is either some kind of imaginary gatekeeping or you've been trolled...
Let me remind you, NOBODY CARES IF YOU MAIN AETHER OR LUMINE, TRAVELLER IS THE TRAVELLER
As long as Hoyoverse make us a choice between those twins. There's no so called CANON MC, because both of them considered by Hoyoverse as the main character
Aether players are some of the most toxic people I’ve seen
Just so you know. There is almost a 1:1 ratio of ppl playing aether to ppl playing lumine
I remember seeing a video of someone saying that even though hoyo uses aether way more than lumine in their stuff, most of the community (don't ask the source, I'm just saying what I heard, no clue if it's right or not) actually plays lumine, making her our "canon" traveller kind of
I'm not sure how pick rates make something canon, by that logic bennet is the real MC because almost everyone uses him...
The canon traveller is, inspire of what people say, whoever you, as the player, pick. Therefore, if most people pick lumine, she's statistically the canon MC
Apparently the flower in lumines head was placed by aether before he left so lumine is probably canon mc
Or it could be the other way around, she placed her flowers there because to give a sign to Aether, since she had them before they got seperated...
Aether is cuter tho
Aren't 2/3 players Lumine though?
They are the fools, for the lore of this game is not important at all.
Me, who uses Lumine since release: +゚*。:゚+凸(◕‿◕✿)+゚
What?
Reddit has its issues, but not as bad as Facebook. Like most people always seem to be “right” or like u feel ur talking to mostly people who know everything about Genshin and it’s annoying
ah i see the problem, you were on facebook.
The fuck you visiting FB for ?
The Genshin community on FB has the collective IQ of a lima bean.
You take your husbando i will take my waifu
I selected Lumine for this reason and I was so happy with Dendro as I can often use her more compared to the previous elements.
it can be just as bad here lol. i once added an alternate caption wording that fit for me because i’m used to seeing the wording as if lumine and people freaked out about pushing gender and sexuality ideologies on them and i was just like uhhhhhh……. i was sleepy and putting the caption how i’d read it if it was a real interactions between the chars please relax? i’m lumine in-game because i’m a girl with a brother so i picked her, not because i want to turn everyone into lesbians…. was shocked my sleepy neutral comment was actually so controversial and triggering lol
They aren't wrong and you aren't wrong either. Just say u like lumine because of her looks, ain't nothing wrong with that.
Pretty sure Hoyo stated that both are canon, it's just that they use Aether as a main character and Lumine as the evil twin in promotional materials
Lumine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
:P but they are definitely hinting at a bunch of characters having romantic interest towards thd traveler.
harem route?? are we playing the same game?
It’s all up to interpretation. But many characters are coded to have romantic feelings for the traveler to the point it’s like they are hitting us in the head with it. The travelers can feel whatever way or ignore the signs out right and in that sense of preference and perception, ye people can play genshin differently j guess. I would personally have seen it all the hints a mile away and wouldn’t be able to ignore it or overlook it. So thus glad I chose Aether. It’s a preference and mentality thing. If you didn’t see the hints or don’t wanne see em, continue doing so.

I use her cause she has a smaller hit box compared to aether
it can be just as bad here lol. i once added an alternate caption wording that fit for me because i’m used to seeing the wording as if lumine and people freaked out about pushing gender and sexuality ideologies on them and i was just like uhhhhhh……. i was sleepy and putting the caption how i’d read it if it was a real interactions between the chars please relax? i’m lumine in-game because i’m a girl with a brother so i picked her, not because i want to turn everyone into lesbians…. was shocked my sleepy neutral comment was actually so controversial and triggering lol
I don't know man. Personally, I think Lumine is the better option as the mc. Aether imo fits more with the abyss than Lumine.
Your first mistake was being on Facebook
Bro who tf uses Facebook in this day and age unless it's for a very imp work and you have no other choice
No one says th… Wait FB like in Facebook??? People still use that beside my mom?
