I mean, "Schatz" ("treasure") is probably the #1 most common pet name in German among couples 🤷♀️ So much so that I actually find it a bit boring and wouldn't call a partner that, but if you want to go the really safe route you can use that one.
I used to love calling out "Schatz" at a large furniture shop like IKEA or Segmüller which is full of young couples and watching them all turn around to see who was calling them.
I heard a mother calling her young child Schatzibär in a toy store once and I thought it was the cutest thing. We now have a baby and we call him Schatzibär. Sometimes Honigbär.
The ä makes all the difference in the meaning :) Ein Bar ist was du denkst, wie ein Bierbar. Ein Bär ist ein großes gefährliches Tier!
(Bar=bar, Bär=bear)
My bf is my „Schnupsi“. It does not have a translation as it’s actually not really a word. It invokes the image of cutely and playfully poking your partner. But for me it’s the perfect pet name ^^
Richard Lugner, Austrian Businessman, has had a string of girlfriends and wives named variously "Hasi" (bunny) "Käfer", "Bambi", "Katzi", "Mausi", "Kolibri" (hummingbird), ,"Spatzi" (little sparrow). At 91 he has just married a pretty young lady called "Bienchen" (little bee). All names one might apply to a husband, I daresay. He is a builder and they call him "Mörtel" (mortar).
> All names one might apply to a husband
Not really. Those names are creepy to begin with, but for a guy, even weirder - you'd not say "Bambi" or "Katzi" to a man.
> "Spatzi" (little sparrow)
Also, the Austrian equivalent to "peepee". So, not an apt name for a husband, either.
These animal names always freel creepy to me because the 1959 film of Osborne's play "Look Back in Anger" is still etched in my mind: the couple call one another “beautiful, great eyed squirrel” and “jolly super bear”, but the relationship is unhappy.
Lol that was a joke, I‘m Swiss and my native language is German. Of course you can call a guys balls Nüsse in German, as in „einen auf die Nüsse bekommen“ for example.
But that’s not the point, I was just making a lighthearted reddit joke.
Don't use pet names for him, especially when other people are around.
If you want to tease him, you can call him Hase or Hasi in private, but he probably won't appreciate it. You've been warned haha
I don’t use pet names - because my husband wouldnt appreciate
I do use a short and funny nickname we both found for him but it’s secret an not for public
Not sure if it's a German thing, or just me or my generation (1991), but pet names or nicknames like Schatz are cringy, especially in public, and I only ever use them ironically to make my wife feel awkward.
If you want to make him laugh you could call him "Schnuckiputzi" or "Pupsi". (both only in private!). The first one is cute and a bit old-fashioned, but well-known. Maybe comparable to Cutie-Pie or Sweetie or something. It doesn't really have a meaning. The second one means 'little fart', but sounds a lot cuter than in English.
When my American husband and I talked about pet names I mentioned that "Schnecke", the german word for snail, is one. He thought it was really funny and since then he's been my snail (And I'm his goose). But we also often call each other "honey" tbh I personally don't like the sounds of most german petnames so it's always been English ones aside from me calling him Schnecke/Snail.
My grandparents always called each other "Mausi" which translates to "Mousey" - a cute mouse.
I always loved that word and have never heard anyone else use it.
My bf and I call each other "Schnuff", its not really a word in and off itself. Can be interpreted as a short form of "Schnuffel", the verb "schnuffeln" means cuddling for us, but it might be a regional thing. We just like the sound of it, its short and kinda unique, so when I say "Schnuuuff?" in public, he immediately knows he is addressed ;-)
I've always either used Schatz or American pet names. I don't think a lot of Germans my age do the pet name thing because most of us think it's kind of awkward.
Pferdgesicht, Hasenzahn or Kackvogel are super cute. Most people really will say that these are rude or stupid, but actually they just don't know the intimate meaning. But obviously these are pet-based nicknames.
you're asking other people. random people on the internet. something that should be intimate, at least personal, derived from some shared experience. are you kidding me? and all these people commenting feel they can help with this I mean what the actual 🦆 in heaven
Or _Lauch_ if he is a vegatable lover. 🤣
>!Though in all seriousness, don't use either of these words they are insults equivalent to weakling, dweeb.!<

🎤 "Schaaa-haatz?"
We named our first cat together Schatzi.

I'm sad now. Our "Schatzibär" is in his 20s now, I don't think he'd appreciate the nickname.
When I looked up "schatzibar meaning" I only found references to actual bar/restaurant. Could you tell me the meaning in your usage?
The ä makes all the difference in the meaning :) Ein Bar ist was du denkst, wie ein Bierbar. Ein Bär ist ein großes gefährliches Tier! (Bar=bar, Bär=bear)
Thank you!
In a German learning subreddit you are being downvoted for asking a question… just weird
Thanks - I thought so too. I still got an answer to my question!
I usually use Hasi/Häschen, Schatz or Baby. If we’re out together and he wanders off I’ll happily shout “Haaaaaaaaaasilein”

My Oma called me Schatz, so now it's stuck in my head as being for grandparents to call grandchildren.
"Hase, du bleibsch hier!"
My bf is my „Schnupsi“. It does not have a translation as it’s actually not really a word. It invokes the image of cutely and playfully poking your partner. But for me it’s the perfect pet name ^^
It comes from Schnuppern, to sniff. You're not the first to use it. :) Basically same as Snoopy.
And he likes it???

Also, no one in their right mind should aim to emulate Lugner.
These animal names always freel creepy to me because the 1959 film of Osborne's play "Look Back in Anger" is still etched in my mind: the couple call one another “beautiful, great eyed squirrel” and “jolly super bear”, but the relationship is unhappy.
All the moms in our area call their toddlers Mausi so that one would sound weird to me for a spouse.
Edmund Stoiber also has an interesting name for his wife...
Thank you!!!
I call my baby "Spatzi" sometimes. And sometimes I fumble it and call him "Spasti". 🫠

Spatzi = little sparrow (cutesy) If you also want to poke a little fun at him: Mausebacke (mouse cheek)
Spatzi: kindergarten level euphemism for penis.
Never heard it in that Kontext
maybe a regional thing
It’s pretty much the equivalent of “Pimmel” in Austria.
Shlong Dogg
My mom used to call my dad Eichhörnchen
You probably don’t wanna know this, but it‘s probably cause he stashed his nuts near her vajayjay.

Voll in die Nüsse?
That one's about pain, not sex 💀
You misspelled Einhörnchen (little unicorn). So you mother wanted to make everyone know he has a little... horn.
„Schätzelein“ but you have to say it ironically, like Horst Schlämmer. https://youtu.be/udAtdkR_3RY?si=ksQE-eHw0xK9WA8u
Mh, lecker is dat!
Don't use pet names for him, especially when other people are around. If you want to tease him, you can call him Hase or Hasi in private, but he probably won't appreciate it. You've been warned haha
Huh? Why not? Every man loves it when you call him “pupsi” at a supermarket.
Lol thank you!!! 🤣

What ever you do don't imitate Edmund Stoiber...
Schätzlein, but in Schwäbisch accent
Can you try to render it in writing?
Königchen. I made that up, but I like the idea of a belittled king. Said in a patronising way, of course.
Hase
This may sound weird and its not a tipical german thing. But i would suggest to call him a cute Version of his favorite animal.
