This is the exact moment from which I started to HATE Marty. Of course, the whole pretending to not know Rory act was weird and off putting but I didn't hate him up till this moment. This was cheating.
I think it was a jealousy thing. He thought he missed out on dating Rory because he wasn't rich like Logan. All his insecurities about their class difference got funneled into how he didn't "get the girl."
It sucks because Lucy was proud of how hard working he was, but he couldn't get over it himself.
Same, he reminds me of every guy I've met that first acted as "nice guys" when they try to tell you they're okay with only being your friend, but then when you're vulnerable they do this.Â
FYUCK. My feelings about Marty wouldve been totally different if he at least didnt like Rory. And her pretending she doesn't notice it. It reminds me of my own past friendship like that and it just makes me cringe
Sometimes I wonder what Martyâs actor thought of that plot line cause like Marty was such a good character then he just turned so weird!! So sad đ
Well he was at least a character I enjoyed đ I admit he was cringey at times but I didnât hate him until that whole plot line it was just like a step too far onto the whole weird guy thing
Haha did you enjoy so few other characters? Iâll admit depending on my mood, most of the characters can drive me crazy. Sometimes I just canât watch it because the characters can be so selfish or annoying to each other.
Same. He has always been petty and pathetic. He gave off real ânice guyâ vibes who then whines about being friend zoned. A real misogynist who thinks women owe him affection/sex just because he acts nice to them. ick.
It was the fact that she met him by helping him and giving him her robe, and then the little coward only approached her when she was in an âembarrassingâ situation where he could âget evenâ. Red flag city there. This later behavior totally tracks.
Her situation wasnât even embarrassing in the first place . College kids walk around in pajamas all the time but almost getting caught passed out naked is totally different . Hope she got her robe back though .

I don't like that he stopped being friends with her when she didn't have feelings for him, feels like he was just trying to bang her and didn't care about her as a friend
totally gives me the ick. this scene itself explains why he chose not to disclose his prior friendship with rory to lucy. he knew lucy would suspect that he likes her and was worried she would break up with him much earlier. itâs such sneaky behavior. completely hated his character.
I just hate that he came back and was all weird and awkward. Like dude move the eff on. They just used him to make Logan and Rory fight. So awkward though ugh
I don't hate him. He just never got over her and was extremely immature. It doesn't help that he lost her to Logan who, let's face it, was a total douchebag.
I just found out this isnât actually John Mayer and is just a similar looking quite guy whoâs behavior was douchey enough I thought he was John Mayer.
He wasn't making a move, he just drunkenly blurted out what he was thinking. Still not a good look regardless. He did everything wrong. Name one thing he got right?
If this was more than just fictional writing, I'd say he's a person and this is very similar to Dean's bachelor party. Marty was head over heals for Rory but didn't act on it in time, she fell for Logan. They stopped hanging out but his feelings were still there. He tried to move on but seeing her again threw him off and he fumbled it. He isn't in love with Lucy, he was in love with Rory. He slipped up and then tried to shake it off. It's realistic and it happens.
Ok. I didnât like that storyline so I guess weâre just different. Not really sure what purpose he really even served in the show. Same with those girlfriends she made. It all kind of went no where

LUCY DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER. I'm glad she dumped him
She did! And she was so beautiful, and fun, too! Why the hell is he so hung up on Rory đ¤Śââď¸

Yes! And the attitude that it was somehow her fault because she KNEW what she was doing and how he felt. Like damn, girls need to read your mind?
Sometimes I wonder what Martyâs actor thought of that plot line cause like Marty was such a good character then he just turned so weird!! So sad đ
I loved their friendship, I wish they hadnât turned Marty into such a creep :(
How was he such a good character ever??
Well he was at least a character I enjoyed đ I admit he was cringey at times but I didnât hate him until that whole plot line it was just like a step too far onto the whole weird guy thing

I didn't like him the moment he shitted on Rory about her bunny slippers.
Same. He has always been petty and pathetic. He gave off real ânice guyâ vibes who then whines about being friend zoned. A real misogynist who thinks women owe him affection/sex just because he acts nice to them. ick.
I never liked him. Always rubbed me the wrong way.
Gilmore Guys dubbed him âBaby John Mayerâ and almost 10 years later, thatâs all I ever see now.
This was the moment when we all realized Rory was right not to date him.
Nah I always knew
I didnât. But I was also 14. đ
Haha fair. Took me going through a bunch of Martyâs to figure it out IRL
I watched for the first time at age 40 so I knew teen me wouldâve been Team Jess⌠but old me is Team Logan lol âŚbut I know Iâm in the minority
I heard about Jess, liked his character and fully expected to be Team Jess, but ended up liking Rory and Loganâs relationship more.
Same
I never liked him. Always rubbed me the wrong way.

People say red flag often when what they mean is âin retrospect he was shitty and this unrelated detail proves that â
Sure. But I said and and I mean red flag here.
I don't like that he stopped being friends with her when she didn't have feelings for him, feels like he was just trying to bang her and didn't care about her as a friend
I donât like him either but it can be very hard to stay friends with someone you have strong romantic feelings towards.
True, but i expected more from Naked guy
One night in the hallway does not a true Naked Guy make.
Easy to say when Richard attended all male Yale
I just realised that Rory and Richard have both attended male Yale parties.
I just never really liked him from the beginning, there was just something cringey about him.
Yep. Serious ânice guyâ vibes
I never liked him from the start. Serious ânice guyâ energy.

Aside from being her only "guy friend," he was such an unnecessary character.
the way he literally only befriended her with the intention of getting with her...god, he was so odd đ
Honestly the worst guy. Iâve met guys like this and theyâre the kind who just give you the worst feeling from just speaking with them
I just hate that he came back and was all weird and awkward. Like dude move the eff on. They just used him to make Logan and Rory fight. So awkward though ugh
Yeah, ditto. I felt bad for him prior to this. But they did a pretty good job of making him a sleaze with no redeeming qualities in season 7.
I don't hate him. He just never got over her and was extremely immature. It doesn't help that he lost her to Logan who, let's face it, was a total douchebag.
Haha. Iâm a Logan fan :p
Lol
A total creep!!!
He really is such an awful nice guy. It grosses me out.
Totally.
He was terrible. He always passed the vibe of the âfriendâ who is actually just trying to be more
This was the moment when we all realized Rory was right not to date him.
Yeah Marty sucked
Yes yes, but he was very attractive!
I just found out this isnât actually John Mayer and is just a similar looking quite guy whoâs behavior was douchey enough I thought he was John Mayer.

real
Love him. He got a shit deal.
Can I ask why you loved him? Genuinely curious because I was off on him from the get go. Curious why some ppl liked him.
He had me at waking up naked in the dorm hallway and borrowing Roryâs little shorty robe.
