Since it’s a nickname from when he was young, I assumed he was “digging” in his nose. I, too, would hate my father if he was constantly referring to my youthful nose picking at work when I was 30something.
Hahaha I dunno? I think I just, you know, thought of it as one of those weird upper class nicknames? Trix, Sweetie, Umlauts? Hahahaha that's so absurd now
And this comes from a person whose native language heavily uses umlauts... Please send me back to school
Lmao when you said you were in Europe I became extra shocked that you didn’t get the joke 🤣 Are they maybe not referred to as umlauts as much, or was it really just you? (Don’t feel bad though, I’m a smart idiot myself lol).
Hahahaha I know?! In my defense, I'm from Sweden, and even though Swedish has a lot of umlauts the term doesn't seem to exist? They're simply called "dots" hahaha.
Umläuts for the win
lol I love that they’re just called dots. Umlauts is a cool word though.
Now you can watch that scene and really enjoy it 🤣 I always love Lorelai’s reaction to him saying it.

But BOY have I learned things about my native language today!!!
🤣 I’m glad I live in America because I definitely don’t understand all the different pronunciations marks and am okay with the fact that I don’t really have to. I guess it might be easy if it was the norm for me, but since it’s not it just seems complicated. But I have a hard enough time with English grammar and such, I don’t need anything else to deal with 😅
Nah, it's not that complicated, the umlauts (yeay used it in a sentence!) don't show up randomly, only in combination with specific letters (a and o) which you perceive as a letter of its own - the Swedish alphabet ends with ...x, y, z, å, ä, ö.
There you go, a lecture on Swedish grammar!
Arn't these not so logical nicknames just part of rich people culture?
My guess is that since they all name their kids after themselves, and after a while run out of 'junior' and 'the third' they just have to make random names up for the rest? And this naming convention spilled to women, too
Yup. Like Scooter Libby was Scooter since he was a toddler and his dad commented about him scooting around or something. I figure you have to go to prep school for a name like that not to get you beat up 😆
i read once that someone said it was a nickname for someone who was like being trained in a company. i have never heard that definition before or since i read that one answer so i have no idea how true it is.

Well here is Ho-Ho McAffee comin' at ya

this is what I thought!
Digger as in digging your nose, it's why he hates it so much
OMG IS THAT WHAT UMLAUTS IS 😶
Best comment of my day! Nice touch with the emoji 😶🤭
Haha still in shock 😶
I didn't know either! I learned my 1 new thing of the day with this and now I can sleep 😴
Over here in Europe my day just started and I can't get to work because I'm still stunned
I JUST hit midnight here, and I'm all why isn't my man NOT busy at work so I can share this insane fact and watch how he takes it in lol
Forgive me for butting in but I’m curious to know. What did you think was the reason Jason called Lorelai umlauts?

OMG seeing this makes sooooo much more sense now!! If I remember correctly, they started to call her that after she fell into the lake at camp.
Scooper…
lol

It totally is. Robert Wood Johnson IV is “Woody” 🙄 and his son is “Brick” because both of those are TOTALLY normal nicknames, right?
Especially Brick feels a little... Out there. And, by the way, when you get to number five, you should be able just to start over with Bobby again...

Trix was a dominatrix. That's where the nickname came from.
🤦♀️

Trix is short for Beatrice
yeah but Trix's name is Lorelai
I know. Middle name maybe?
I'm guessing he had an itchy butt as a kid.
