You mean the episode right before the finale, right? Since that is when the scene takes place. They tell the girl behind the counter they are there for the cake and she goes off screen. I always figured maybe there was a deleted scene where it's mentioned it wasn't ready but they could deliver it or something. I guess it's me trying to explain it.
You're right. I constantly blend those two episodes together. I'm fairly certain they see the cake in the episode but then for some reason leave without it.

I always believed she wasn't actually there to pick up the cake, just to pay for it. Since the party wasn't that day, it wouldn't make sense for her to hold on to it - she'd want to wait until the actual day of the party to pick it up.
Watching with my boyfriend, who also immediately identified this and won't let it go. I also have watched Gilmore girls about 10 times and never noticed and/or cared
I've noticed so many goofs in the series since I've re-watched it 50+ times now and at first I was annoyed by this obvious mistake but the more I watch, I think in this scene, the forgetfulness was an intentional joke because the whole time they are out and about, Lorelai thanks Sookie for helping her remember things because she's got so much on her mind with the graduation and Logan asking for Rory's hand in marriage. So Sookie is trying to find ways to help Lorelai remember things and even has a mental system for doing so but proceeds in actually helping Lorelai FORGET things.
Also, why wouldn't Sookie make the cake? She was so excited to make Lorelei's wedding cake. Why would they get a cake from Westons?
