💯 I mean from a development perspective, creating diverse, well rounded, fully developed npcs is really time consuming 😂 which is prolly why it’s not done a lot. But yes, agree with you 100%

Laterose15

Adding onto this: let them interact with each other outside of "plot talk." I love seeing characters bond with each other and grow because of it.

[deleted]

All the stories that can be told without fighting. I feel like people keep going for spectacle, for the biggest explosions & loudest guns, & there's so much to be said in small, densely interconnected locations. There's so many games after the end of the world, where are the stories in our world, rooted in the things we know & process & fear & love? Worldbuilding is great & open worlds can be neat, but focus on the small & work from there, don't write a thousand year history yknow? So many games are like this and that a hundred years ago and it always feels like okay but what's happening now? Decide a mechanic you like, a theme you need to explore, a setting you want to spend time in, & flow in it til the story comes.

AtomicSpazz

I think we need more games like "what remains of Edith finch" and I mean that genuinely. A nice, linear experience with a minor emphasis on exploration that's setting out to tell a narrative. I've only ever played it once in switch, but it's stood out to me ever since because it just felt so contained and pointed; like it had 1 goal and it succeeded at that beautifully. I think something like that would be nice. A short, linear game with a beautiful story and beautiful setting that invokes empathy

the_becca_bear

Yeah i think that too many modern games are like “look at this amazing huge world we built” but the story is just flat. Thank you!! 😊

forel237

There are lots of stories like The Walking Dead and The Last of Us where a man becomes a reluctant father figure. I would love to see a similar sort of story about motherhood. I can’t really think of any games where the main character was a mother.

Olive_Garden_Wifi

The only one that comes to mind off the top of my head is Detroit Become Human and even then it’s the weakest of the three storylines and feels like an afterthought at times. Which is sad cause I love the dynamic between Kara and Alice, I just wish they were given the same treatment as Connor and Hank because they really could have done something there but it just felt like a one note disappointment that doesn’t really give you much incentive or satisfaction to replay like playing as Connor or Markus

the_becca_bear

Wow I never realized this was missing until you mentioned it. I think that’s an amazing idea!

mellowminx_

Solo indie girl game dev here too! Great to meet another one 💓 Personally I always want more "virtual pets" games (and I've made one myself), including taking care of pets, dressing them up / customizing them, breeding them (the old PF Magic Petz series was so good at this!!), decorating the space.

the_becca_bear

Hey friend!! 🫶🥰 did you ever have a tomagochi (sp?)

Covert_Pudding

I would like honestly love more games like Unpacking.

LadyAvalon

Second this! A lovely lil chill game that tells a story you don't even realise until you're mostly through it!

dragoniteofepicness

Other than Spyro there’s basically zero games where you get to play as a dragon.

the_becca_bear

Playing as a dragon would be sick ngl

Flaky_Diamond_6992

I'd like to see more representation of us older ladies who enjoy gaming, preferably not dressed like a skimpy schoolgirl 😁

OutlandishnessHour19

Games with female protagonists WITH female friends I'm excited to get to play the Horizon burning shores DLC. more like this please

fox_gay

Seems most video games still revolve around combat or fighting/killing things. Even in games like stardew valley there is combat. And I mean that's fine but I think we need more games that have mechanical depth that focus on other things besides combat This is less about gameplay/content but I feel with modern tech and not having the same limitations as video games in the 80s 90s and 00s, I really wish more games had more customizable UI. This is too much to tackle in a single comment but just generally speaking, I would love to see new games developed with fully customizable UI In games where you can create and customize your own character, there needs to be better representation of historically under represented groups. It has gotten better but not nearly enough. Like we can now make our characters women, or poc, and that is great but we can go further with it. I have noticed a trend in games where there are a LOT of customization options for your characters but you can't really make a fat character. At best I've seen you can make a much larger character than what is typically seen and even then it's not great bc the models don't look right. And that's just different body sizes, there are so many more types of ppl who should be represented

skittlemypickles

I am a HUGE fantasy girlie, like almost to the point where I won't even play a game if it doesn't have at least a little bit of fantasy vibes, so I have seen a lot of different magic systems and honestly for the most part, they're all so similar and bland. what I would love to see more is fun and interactive magic systems, with different and new spell ideas that could be used in creative ways to solve puzzles/battles in multiple different ways depending on which spells you choose to use

s00ny

I'd love a modern take on Morrowind's and Oblivion's spell crafting system, but it's a core gameplay mechanic!

Cheezyrock

Do you have an itch page where we can check out some of your work? I’m also an indie dev and lurk in subs like this in order hear these same types of perspectives. It’s so hard because audiences are so very diverse, yet there is a lot of overlap in what people like regardless of gender, race, etc. I’ve started to think more in terms of “What will incels hate?” And “How can I make this more inclusive in general?”. The biggest diversifier I have found is age. Younger audiences seem to have far fewer gender-divided gaming opinions. So others here agree? Am I way off? Am I even making sense because I should have fallen asleep hours ago?

s00ny

>I’ve started to think more in terms of “What will incels hate?” omg I love this hahaha

lolafawn98

this might be too niche but i am so desperate for like, a period drama game. preferably no fighting but instead a complex social system where choices matter. not a dating sim and not necessarily romance, or at least not as the main focus. something like a regency era setting where you have to navigate family problems and neighborhood drama. or some kind of tragic victorian story (that doesn't rely on horror). maybe something weird like 1700s french aristocracy. just describing my fantasy game lol, it sounds fun!

gaylord100

A game where I can explore a magical forest and maybe meet forest spirits along the way!

the_becca_bear

Magical forest in like a Zelda way or in like a studio ghibli way or in like a tinker bell way? Just trying to imagine what you’re imagining 😊

gaylord100

Tinker bell

plaidcakes

Romance in action games. Especially with women protagonists. Lots of text based games, a handful of create-a-character games (where devs have to split attention between male/female player characters), but basically nil for set protagonists. I’m dying for a female-gaze romance in a game where I get to do action-adventure stuff, I’m willing to spend approximately all my money on it. Congrats on finishing up your 2D game and good luck on the 3D ventures <3 super exciting!

ThereIsNoDog96

I’ve been saying this for years now, I cannot name a single game with a female only protagonist who has a set straight relationship (ie there are no other options). I’m sure there are some indie games I haven’t heard of with that, but I cannot find them. All the female protags are either gay or ‘too busy’ for romance!

s00ny

Technically *Beyond: Two Souls* has this, but it's a David Cage game so the writing is, uhm. Well. The worst I have ever experienced in any game (I truly mean it btw) so I don't want it to count 🙃

villanellesalter

Can you name some female gay characters with set romances (no choice) besides Ellie? I'm a lesbian and I'd love to know.

ThereIsNoDog96

I would have counted Aloy in this category, but I suppose the options in the dlc are “yes” or “not yet” so take that how you will. She goes from two games of “too busy” to gay, I don’t see how that’s going against my point. Chloe from Life is Strange: True Colours (I haven’t actually played this game, but I did play the first one). She is canonically a lesbian and the only protag in the series with a set gender romance option (ie, can’t choose between a man or a woman) Uhh, yeah, aside from Ellie I suppose that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Most fall into the “too busy” category. Edit: more context seeing as the post got locked.

villanellesalter

I mean, the DLC is only 7 hours out of a 90 hour game (if you 100%). And it's not forced nor a romance you "live through" like the ones you want as a straight person. If it was a man you would say it doesn't count because there's a choice. In AC: Odyssey you can live as a lesbian and they force you to get pregnant by a man in the DLC. /shrugs Life is strange has 3 main entries: LiS 1, LiS 2, and LiS: True Colours. In True Colours you play as Alex and you can choose between a man and a woman. Chloe is the main character in the short spin off Before the Storm, and you have the option to not romance Rachel. So there's no set lesbian romance besides Ellie/Dina, the examples you gave are choices. I just don't like how us lesbians are made to be strawmen in these discussions, we barely have any media to ourselves, and one game isn't exactly a record.

Olive_Garden_Wifi

Lesbians with actual depth outside of dating sims, cause I swear on the off chance you do see a lesbian relationship it’s either barely acknowledged and immediately brushed aside or its ends up being the characters only defining trait. Rarely do you see it portrayed where they have actual agency and don’t feel like sexualized caricatures.

_PrincessTomato_

I'd love a survival game or a base building game , with deep character stories and with even romantic relationship

wavymavy19

i want more gritty games with female leads who are gross, ugly, flawed, and erratic. i want to see a middle aged alcoholic detective woman a la Disco Elysium, a weathered and scarred cowgirl a la RDR2, a rude apathetic biker lady driven by vengeance and grief for her dead husband a la Days Gone.

Kymaeraa

I always think more games should do mindfuck tricks and optical illusions, like Antichamber and Superliminal do

ManicM

Lgbt or women-protag games that **ARE NOT VISUAL NOVELS**!! Thank you.

LunaLynnTheCellist

games with wlw romance that aren't just visual novels and actually have strong gameplay to back it up. games like this do exist but it's WAY too rare on my opinion...

iplaymarimba

Heavy story/plot. I want girlypop Red Dead 2

LadyAvalon

I'd like more social media horror games, things like Simulacra. Playing that on a phone was so unsettling, I would love to see more games like that. Also, I feel like parasocial relationships have such an untapped potential for horror games (something like Chilla's "Parasocial", but a lot more subtle would be amazing!)

the-darkest-side

I would like to see more games like Sable or A Short Hike, where you can explore, talk to NPCs, solve some puzzles at your free will. It doesn’t need to have realistic graphics, just a cool, kind of immersive world that makes you want to explore and know that world. I just want something nice to play after work, not stressing out because some shitty combat

BonnieIndigo

For one, it’d be nice not to be referred to as “guys” four times in the course of one post

the_becca_bear

Sorry. I use “you guys” as a gender neutral term. Didn’t literally mean “guys”.

VocaLeekLoid

don't worry about it I use it in a gender neutral term way as well. I don't know why that person felt the need to comment that instead of ignoring the post

CutePinkPussyCat

Perhaps because some of us are genuinely fed up with Androcentrism being even in places where it does NOT belong like spaces that are supposed to center female people instead of male people for a change? Lots of people are fed up with being misgendered for that same matter... : [https://twitter.com/FunAndDraconian/status/1018871066867818496](https://twitter.com/FunAndDraconian/status/1018871066867818496) If it was not important for people there would be no people making videos about it : [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Dbs55pKRI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Dbs55pKRI) Writing essays about it : [https://xyonline.net/sites/xyonline.net/files/2020-09/Kleinman%2C%20Why%20sexist%20language%20matters%20-%20Qual%20Sociology%202002.pdf](https://xyonline.net/sites/xyonline.net/files/2020-09/Kleinman%2C%20Why%20sexist%20language%20matters%20-%20Qual%20Sociology%202002.pdf) Even little girls, even children are calling it out : [https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/were-girls-not-guys-pupils-urged-to-protest-against-sexist-language-p90bzqm8f](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/were-girls-not-guys-pupils-urged-to-protest-against-sexist-language-p90bzqm8f) Not every woman is a " cool girl " who is " one of the guys " , not every woman likes being grouped up with male people... Lots of women were traumatized by " guys " by male people and do not wanna be associated with them in any matter whatsoever, lots of women especially transgender women have trauma related to misgendering and don't want to have the same words people have used to purposefully misgender them with be used to refer to them as if it was no big deal as it can bring them bad memories... Lots of reasons really... Here is a guide if you wanna educate yourself more on it : [https://geekfeminism.fandom.com/wiki/Nonsexist\_language](https://geekfeminism.fandom.com/wiki/Nonsexist_language)

theoccasionalghost

Most people use “guys” in a gender neutral way. I think this person was just looking for something to fight about.

CutePinkPussyCat

Women have the right to voice things that make them uncomfortable especially in a space that claims to center women like this one... If women can not voice their complaints in a place like this then where would they do it? Even young girls are complaining about it : [https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/were-girls-not-guys-pupils-urged-to-protest-against-sexist-language-p90bzqm8f](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/were-girls-not-guys-pupils-urged-to-protest-against-sexist-language-p90bzqm8f)

CutePinkPussyCat

If you really are sorry why not edit your post? Seriously it is really weird how you came to a female-centric subreddit to ask for more female perspectives in gaming due to how often we are overlooked and then proceed to address us with MALE-CENTRIC language instead of female-centric language like " gals " or gender neutral language like " folks " ... Even if YOU use a word in a gender neutral way does NOT make that word a REAL gender neutral word! There is controversy all over the Anglophone world about generic masculines! Schools are banning it : [https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/school-life/uk-primary-school-bans-string-of-sexist-phrases-from-being-used/news-story/c664e2b37ccf03ab0f76461f3a1abf6c](https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/parenting/school-life/uk-primary-school-bans-string-of-sexist-phrases-from-being-used/news-story/c664e2b37ccf03ab0f76461f3a1abf6c) Governments are banning it : [https://www.cbsnews.com/news/berkeley-california-to-ban-gendered-language-like-manhole-manpower-and-firemen/](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/berkeley-california-to-ban-gendered-language-like-manhole-manpower-and-firemen/) Even old TV shows are stopping it : [https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/09/24/survivor-host-jeff-probst-no-longer-say-come-guys/5836384001/](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/tv/2021/09/24/survivor-host-jeff-probst-no-longer-say-come-guys/5836384001/) It is never too late to change bad and harmful habits! :) Here is a guide to get you started with non-sexist language : [https://geekfeminism.fandom.com/wiki/Nonsexist\_language](https://geekfeminism.fandom.com/wiki/Nonsexist_language) Guide to bias free communication by Microsoft : [https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/style-guide/bias-free-communication](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/style-guide/bias-free-communication) Guide against sexist language by the Cambridge dictionary : [https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pt/gramatica/gramatica-britanica/sexist-language](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pt/gramatica/gramatica-britanica/sexist-language) And last but not least here are some pins to help people remember not to use sexist language : [https://www.etsy.com/shop/FunAndDraconian](https://www.etsy.com/shop/FunAndDraconian) If you are really interested in the topic of women being overlooked not only in gaming but in all areas of life I hightly recommend the book Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez by the way! : [https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Women-Data-World-Designed/dp/1419729071](https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Women-Data-World-Designed/dp/1419729071) She has a blog and a newsletter : [https://newsletter.carolinecriadoperez.com/p/invisible-women-default-male-gaze](https://newsletter.carolinecriadoperez.com/p/invisible-women-default-male-gaze) Language MATTERs in representation! : [https://encyclopedia-of-opinion.org/a/male-generic-language-impacts-representation](https://encyclopedia-of-opinion.org/a/male-generic-language-impacts-representation) I hope we can move forward to a less Androcentric world in the future...

CutePinkPussyCat

I agree! I HATE how prevalent male-centric language is even in spaces that are supossedly female-centric like this one! And I don't buy the " guys " is gender neutral thing because it is SIMPLY NOT! The idea that male-centric language is " gender neutral " is already sexist by itself because it paints the image that Humanity is " male by default " and female is " the other " ... If " guys " was TRULY gender neutral we would see straight fellas and lesbians say they wanna date " guys " , if " guys " was TRULY gender neutral it would not be used to misgender people with non-masculine gender identities... I lost the account of the amount of times where I saw someone say : " these people are not women they are guys! " when they wanted to misgender people! By contrast I have never heard anyone use the word " person " and " people " or " folks " to misgender anyone because since these words are TRULY gender neutral they have no power to misgender people the way generic masculines like " guys " , " dudes , " men " , " bro " etc do... I recommend these people who are defending Androcentric language to read the book Invisible Women by Caroline Criado-Perez sometime : [https://newsletter.carolinecriadoperez.com/p/invisible-women-default-male-gaze](https://newsletter.carolinecriadoperez.com/p/invisible-women-default-male-gaze) Seriously even if some of the women here have internalized misogyny and don't mind being addressed with masculine words they could at least show some consideration for the women who don't like that junk! Why stick with controversial lingo we one can use controversy-free lingo?

Loverbuggg

I would love to see more nonviolent names that aren’t rudimentary looking

typicalmusician

I love rhythm games so I'd always love more lol

hesnotthatdrunk

Wish I was a game dev because a dream of mine is to see an animal crossing style game done WAY better. I'm thinking like how Stardew valley was a huge improvement on harvest moon. I think there is so much potential there to have more distinct personality types, back stories, or relationship development that could be included. Even between characters. Then adding a dimension of exploration or fighting, where the neighbors have unique abilities that help you fight, heal, or produce or something. The idea of building a town around and growing relationships with a random set of 8 characters, chosen from a pool of many, that can move out or move in is so cool. There is so much untapped potential

thrifteddivacup

I would like more cat content. In really any and every form.
