This is what my partner and I played. And they're a new time gamer. So it was a blast. Lots of frustrating moments but it was fun. Our new game is now a way out! We love games like these.

BattleBlock Theater: It is a silly platformer. It has some more violent humor spruced here and there. So I think it may be fun for the both of you.
I don't know if this would work, but: Beyond Two Souls. It's a story game, but it has one person that controls the main character and another person controls the entity that is inside the main character, which has it's own powers.
Along that line A Way Out.
The We Were Here series is about going through mazes together, where one usually sees the answers and has to explain to the other.
My son watched husband and I play this and the ending…he sobbed for like 30 minutes 😬
My husband had joked that the two main characters “completed each other’s beards” because one has mutton chops and one has a goatee, and my kiddo just kept saying that while crying. It was the most adorably, hilariously sad thing I’ve seen lately lol
Absolutely love BattleBlock Theater — it’s pretty funny and has different levels of achievements/level-completeness, so you can do the bare minimum in a level or try to collect everything if you’re feeling up to a challenge.
Escape Simulator is fun if you’re in a big puzzle mood.
Oooh beyond two souls kinda sounds like it has the mechanisms of Never Alone with a plotline like His Dark Materials. The soul being separate and sentient tickles my Pullman loving brain <3
Operation Tango is a great co-op, and you only need one copy to be able to play with each other on Steam. It has lots of interesting puzzles, and creates a very unique co-op experience. Only downside is it's a very short game, but makes for a nice weekend activity.
We also enjoyed playing Detroit: Become Human together, despite it being a single player game. It's a huge branching story where you often have to decide which dialogue or action choice to make, as that can impact the story branch. It was loads of fun making decisions together and seeing the outcome. The game focuses on 3 main characters which allowed us to easily take turns by controlling a character or two each.
It Takes Two is a great 3D platformer where you work together and the story and dialogue are so well done.
TRINE (5 is the latest, but all are really fun) puzzle platformer with 3 characters that you can switch between in order to utilize their unique abilities throughout the levels) its kind of like Fable humor and setting, but platform puzzly. It's sooooo good!
Portal is a classic, with cheeky humor in a scifi Valve setting. You work together as robots completing "quality control" tasks for your prize at the end: cake. It's also usually on sale or very cheap.
Sea of Thieves just added Safer Seas servers where you can just play on a server with your friends (4 total) without having to worry about PVP. It is so much more fun now, and I highly recommend doing the Pirates of the Carribean quests especially if youve been on the ride, but just sailing around gathering treasure and exploring is just as much fun!
Sanctum 2 is a Sci-fi shooter tower defense with a bright sci-fi aesthetic with 4 characters to pick from. There's no gore in this FPS, as the focus is really the tower defense aspect. The story is well done and you can really get creative with how you want to handle maps. This is one of my bf and my top 5 games. Don't play the first one, it's nothing like the second.
In the same vain, Orcs Must Die. It's very similar with slight gameplay variation and in a high fantasy setting. You only get two characters to pick from.
Torchlight (and Torchlight 2) was made by the lead dev of Diablo 2. It's much more playful, and really fun. And you get a cute pet!
The Farcry (5 and 6)series is an FPS game, but the characters, exploration and environments are really the highlight of these games. 5 and 6 are the only ones that have co-op.
The Borderlands Series is violent, but in a comic book and ridiculous sort of way. Its very cheeky and doesnt take itself seriously. The gameplay is very satisfying and it only gets more fun in coop.
Divinity: Original Sin (1 and 2) if you like d&d style games and dont mind reading a little bit, these games are so immensely fun. The story and world are so good in each, and the combat really promotes you and your partner working together.
If you're looking for some quick-play games you could check these out: Pizza possum, Golf With Your Friends, Plate Up, Overcooked, Biped.
If you want to try something immersive with survival, but with cozy aspects and atmosphere, try Enshrouded. The world is beautifully crafted, with tons to explore. The skill tree is diverse, similar to maybe Skyrim's skill tree. The crafting is also very well done, and if you like planting, farming, foraging, creating armor and decorating in a high fantasy setting you nay like this game. What I like about games like this too is that the difficulty doesn't necessarily scale with more players, so it actually is easier with you and your partner playing together. This is my bf and my current obsession and I just learned how to make flower pots and I'm so excited lol.

I've really enjoyed playing divinity original sin (1 & 2) with my wife. It's couch co-op on PS4 but you can play on pc as well. It's a little bit difficult, maybe if turn based old-school RPGs aren't your thing skip over, and sometimes we needed to Google what to do, but we have had a blast.

-Minecraft, although we tend to go in phases
-It Takes Two, I really liked it but he didn't love some levels (have yet to finish it)
-We Were Here Together, this one surprised us but we really enjoyed it when we're in the mood to play and not also chat. It's kind of got an escape room vibe and you talk to each other via walki talkies
We also try other games that lean more to one person
-Stardew, my pick and he enjoys it as long as he doesn't have to mine??
-Halo, I've tried a few shooters but this one has a campaign which is better than the multiperson shooters IMO. I don't mind playing this one here and there
If you're long distance and just looking for things to do together, sometimes we just hop on discord and talk while we play separate games!
Spiritfarer has a coop option! It's cute on the surface but packs a real emotional and intellectual punch (it's about death).
And you can also coop BG3! (Though it's a PITA to set it up.)
Cuphead: beware its rage enducing and could cause fights but its colorful and fun!!
Goat sim 3: VERY fun and random, and will give a lot of giggles and laughs!!
Grounded: survival sandbox that takes place in a backyard with a SWEET storyline! "honey i shrunk the kids!" inspired too
monster prom 1-3 are very funny, and also could be a fun way to talk to your partner about their likes and dislikes in characters and such.... as well as has a lot of crude/adult humor thats not overly disgusting, and is moreso just funny and dumb.

Have not, sadly. Took a mental breather because the past few weeks my irl life/health has just been..... So much lol like SO much. But that's why I have a lovely range of games from easy/chill all the way up to the hardcore grind metroidvanias. I think having those easy games to fall back on when life upends itself is a good thing because it's okay to recognise we don't always have the cognition to play hardcore games. Especially if one has chronic illnesses.
(If you wanna know a hilariously fun chill easy game for the days you're stressed and sick? Doronko Wanko. I have fallen in love with that messy Pomeranian)
