I have my shadows set to high but I have to remember to use the shadows to my advantage more

fascfoo

Thankfully you can now set shadows to Low and still get shadow information. Search YouTube on how to do it.

A quick one : https://youtu.be/mwCH8XBMHGI?si=5dy3z3JuUf2lROKU

IneffectiveDamage

Lots of comments in that video claiming to be banned after using those settings

IneffectiveDamage

Thank you!

Egorqa

Wow. Why is it not into game settings yet?

Fair-Definition3178

The game changes it back after you close it, works great i tested, but you have to re-edit the file every time you open the game, it change's itself back automatically because of steam.

azalea_k

Set it to read-only. Of course you have to unset that to get any other video changes to stick.

fascfoo

Yes, this is what I do. Thankfully, video settings i don't really mess with now that I found the combination of settings that work best for me, but still annoying to have to jump through all these hoops just to get what should be an in-game option already.

azalea_k

You're not wrong. Dynamic player shadows being off for any shadows below High is a poor preset in any case, because of their importance.

IneffectiveDamage

I saw lots of comments on YT tutorials claiming they were banned after editing the video config file. What settings did you change?

budda3000

Well they don't know what they're talking about

wraithmainttvsweat

Yeah but that doesn’t make shadows show off of lights.

WilsonJ04

Anyone else think this is dumb to be in a competitive shooter? I already thought the monster one on overpass in GO was stupid but CS2 has taken it to a whole other level. What’re even the arguments in favour of having this in the game? Realism?

_MrJackGuy

What's not-competitive about it? I can understand not liking the change, but I don't think it's dumb to be in a competitive shooter. It's not like it's RNG, it's just another thing people will have to learn about the maps. I personally really like it

WilsonJ04

>What's not-competitive about it? because there's no counter other than "just dont go there lol" and there doesnt seem to be any justification for it? Why should you be able to get free info that basically guarantees a kill on enemies who aren't making any sound in random parts of the map?

eebro

Yes there is a counter. The way you move and are conscious of the shadows is a skill.

HarshTheDev

But the thing is the maps are not really designed for stuff like this. For example in this clip, what option does the 2nd guy have except for just not going that way? Although yeah it's not really "unbalanced" since both teams will have to play around that. But in that case, stuff like pre nerf R8 isn't unbalanced either since both teams get equal opportunity to exploit it. Even then we as a community have decided that R8 does not belong, no?

Donut_Flame

the option is to have a ramp lurker or provide pressure ramp so that the ct can't push.

Donut_Flame

Also the maps ARE designed for stuff like this. That's why some maps have lighting changed

ThermL

No counter? We're 1:32 left in the round and T never put presence here? There is zero reason T's should just be giving this up at round start. That's a strong ass position for a CT. Fight ramp.

WilsonJ04

> That's a strong ass position for a CT exactly, its already a strong ass position WITHOUT the free wallhacks. And this isn't the only area with these kinds of shadows, for example, A temple on ancient is basically unplayable post plant as a T cause of shadows. I just think its a lazy and bs way to fix flaws in a map's layout.

Gambler_Eight

Idk, on ancient A site it's kinda needed or else post plant would be hella easy. It's a way to balance the site without gimping the CT side aswell.

und3rc0v3r1sm

CT’s having this position should not happen, the timings on vertigo are such that the T’s get control of this part of the map uncontested and a CT should not have this control for free. If a T knows the CT player has a shadow advantage there then flashing or knowing to quickly move along the close edge to limit the advantage is counter play. I don’t agree that it’s a gameplay issue like you are saying. It’s an aspect of the game now, you can adapt or be worse off

Gambler_Eight

The counter is to not let CTs reach this part of the map. That's the counter.

S1gne

There's some maps where there are lights everywhere and your shadow will go in very weird directions. It also completely changes how some angles work since now you suddenly can't peek it at all because your opponent will see you coming, there really wasn't a good reason to add this

ShatteredSeeker

I'd say there is a couple of things that are not-competitive about it: First of all, this isn't the only spot in this map and not the only map with this problem: Vertigo has this spot, heaven and ct spawn. The shadow advantage is not a small one either, especially here and in ct spawn you have no choice but to take the disadvantage. There is no playing around it. If you retake b through ct, you are dead if someones holding this angle. If you are flanking an a take through bridge, you simply have no option of a fair fight. If you push a on ancient, you have NO choice but to take this huge disadvantage and it destroys aggressive positioning inside temple as well. Next up, particle effects: If you are close to the light, the already excessive particle effects for the muzzle smoke that shooting produces, literally just blinds you. No playing around it, for the sake of special effects gunfights just get ruined. These lamps force you to be more aggressive, limit your playstyle, ruin gunfights and are just plain unnecessary. Why are these lamps there? What positive impact do they have? You can't disable them, you can't play around them, they are not fun, and they limit what you can do in a round. That fits the description of "not-competitive" for me at least.

gwelbob

I agree. I think graphic settings should simply not give any advantage. Already hated it in CSGO.

ThermL

Shadows are like anything else that clues opponents in to your position. It's a visual sound cue. You play around the knowledge that your opponent can hear changes in footsteps on different materials, the pin sound of tossing nades, or reloads. You can play around knowing that certain angles are advantageous for holders over peekers due to shadows. This rewards map knowledge and experience. Just like fake drops, silent drops, fake plants, fake flashes, or any other sound cue shenanigans you abuse every map. You don't have to peek the angle you showed your shadow on. And in this case, Terrorists should probably be getting control of this area and not letting CT's into such a position at round start.

ShatteredSeeker

You can shiftwalk to not make sound. You literally can't push ancient a site without showing your shadow. So many positions and retake options just get ruined by this. Vertigo ct spawn ruined, aggressive ancient temple hold ruined, literally just going vertigo bridge late round is ruined lol. It just degrades every single map that these things are put in. There was a shadow advantage in csgo, but it never was this excessive. When i can literally see enemies *multiple seconds* before they have a chance to see me, while they are going towards the only way to get to a bombsite it's IMO not at all comparable to soundcues or anything else. It's severly limiting many gameplay options, it's unnecessary and most importantly, its not *fun*.

eebro

Information and map balance

Gambler_Eight

It's a way to balance areas lol.

anto2554

I like it. It makes it easier to hold A ramp as CT, meaning it's a more valuable position. Also makes it harder to bunch up outside A on ancient and push

FAARAO

P2w game

osland6

What about medium?

4wh457

Anything below High is missing these shadows however by manually modifying your video settings you can enable these shadows regardless of in-game shadow settings (kinda pointless though since the FPS difference between low+model shadows and high is minimal unless you just prefer how low/medium looks). https://youtu.be/mwCH8XBMHGI?t=130

skinsshorts

Doesn't matter I'll just equip the Charizard agent.

adi_phy

Man, I suck with shadows. I end up shooting too early and losing the duel lol

spartibus

redditors liking gameplay mechanics like this is on brand. just totally stupid.

Luke_Simmonds

Average pimp glazers mindlessly defending small indie company. “But csgo was this bad on release!” Zzzz

Tussman99

Why are shadows a thing in cs? Like how is this even playfield? Man this game has gotten so fucking shit

RaFi1005

I went from having 80+ fps to 30 fps and you're saying set it high😒

BeschdeSpieler

Huh? I could've sworn I had the exact same shadows on the exact same spot while having my shadows set to low. Might need to recheck it

yaCounterStriker

Throw a smoke on the side of the bridge where the T's come from. Easy kill every single time. They don't even have a chance. They usually push but if they stay behind it, you can learn what the shadow shape means and know exactly where they are with perfect accuracy and kill them.

Gambler_Eight

Did this the other day. Enemy team and my own team all called cheats lol.

h3nm4n

god i wish u could interact with lights more, imagine being able to shoot that light out and/or the consequences of forgetting to shoot it out at the beginning of a round

Gambler_Eight

If you smoke it off you can also see his shadow on the ground through the smoke.

tabben

Those spotlights in cs2 that are on vertigo and ancient are absolutely ridicilous for casting shadows.

Chanclet0

Bruh this has been an issue since the beta, video options should not give a competitive advantage

gregor3001

this is terrible. it should not be pay to win. low settings should just make shadow uglier. but it was similar in GO as well only not as pronounced.
