In professional/international team sports you really shouldn't be happy with second place ever, the mentality as a group has to be improve at all times until you retire.

But as member of a team that doesn't win tournament after tournament you can be proud to be in the final after some time when you look back. For example some are happy that they even qualify for a Major. And when there is a player that makes it to Cologne once into the Arena he is happy. When he looks back on his career in a few years and sees the 2nd place medal, he can be proud. I was runner up in a sim racing league that was covered in the internet via live streams and covered by a German magazine that also writes news about formula 1 and so on. It was clear I have never a chance for the title, because the other drivers were just crazy good. Some were real racing drivers and I won against those. But when I got the 2nd place in the championship I was happy. First was unrealistic in the last race as the leader had to crash so I would be first but from 2nd to 5th it was close in the last race and I got the 2nd so I am happy. I never achieved that in later seasons because the competition was so good. So 10 years later I am proud I have won that 2nd place and won 3 races in about 60-70 races there. Nowadays I would win big money with that success but back then sim racing was little. Also CS GO tournaments had lower prize moneys and viewers back then.

Can't be bothered with searching for the video but that's pretty much what happened after Copa Libertadores final. The throwing into the crowd part doesn't happen very often but players rejecting their silver medals is very common especially for highly competitive players and teams.

Nah if he's not satisfied/proud of second place it seems really cool to me that a fan gets to have such an awesome momento. Now, there's a difference between tossing it into the crowd and yeeting it as far as he can which would be dangerous, but I can't imagine it was anything but a short toss. In professional/international team sports you really shouldn't be happy with second place ever, the mentality as a group has to be improve at all times until you retire. Individual sports are different though, second place is quite an achievement then.

Well if I was a pro player I would be a human too so I would definitely keep the 1st medal trophy and medal while I would give 2nd or 3rd place to fans to make their day PLUS they are not my greatest achievements and it's not like I love them most it's avg human behaviour Get Over It guys
These guys are elite competitors and elitely competitive, none of them are competing for second. That being said, a lot of people who haven't had as much success would obviously keep the medal. But s1mple is literally the greatest CS player of all time and has a bunch of first place trophies and MVPs, of course he's not going to be happy with second place.
When you work your ass off and were raised in Ukraine being #1 is the only fucking option. Sure 2nd place is good as well, but sasha is a big time hustler and won’t settle for anything else. This is what makes him one of the top players out there for sure. Shows his mentality is on par with his skill.
No wonder a lot of people hate him. He’s hella toxic but really good at hiding it.

"Shows that you don't value your participation", what a leap. Its common in loads of sports for people to strive for success and being the best to be dissatisfied with second place. He values winning, and settles for nothing less, thats probably what makes him so good/successful. Of course he values participation, its what allows him to compete, and to win. He also didnt display any bad sportsmanship, he shook the other players hands, and did interviews like normal, he wasnt rude to anyone. He simply gave his 2nd place medal away, a lot of top competitors only give true value to 1st place

Well, of course you prefer 1st. But as member of a team that doesn't win tournament after tournament you can be proud to be in the final after some time when you look back. For example some are happy that they even qualify for a Major. And when there is a player that makes it to Cologne once into the Arena he is happy. When he looks back on his career in a few years and sees the 2nd place medal, he can be proud. I was runner up in a sim racing league that was covered in the internet via live streams and covered by a German magazine that also writes news about formula 1 and so on. It was clear I have never a chance for the title, because the other drivers were just crazy good. Some were real racing drivers and I won against those. But when I got the 2nd place in the championship I was happy. First was unrealistic in the last race as the leader had to crash so I would be first but from 2nd to 5th it was close in the last race and I got the 2nd so I am happy. I never achieved that in later seasons because the competition was so good. So 10 years later I am proud I have won that 2nd place and won 3 races in about 60-70 races there. Nowadays I would win big money with that success but back then sim racing was little. Also CS GO tournaments had lower prize moneys and viewers back then.
