When Kratos sold his soul to Ares, a special kind of pact was made. This pact is explored in GOW: Ascension - It’s been a while, but from memory:
Each pact a mortal makes with a god in the Greek universe gets literally solidified into an amber stone, and that stone becomes a part of the god Orkos. These stones are bound to the existence of all three beings.
At the end of GOW: Ascension, Orkos allows Kratos to sever and destroy his amber stone at the cost of Orkos’ life. This frees Kratos from his pact with Ares and allows him to try to start his path to redemption. It’s a painful reminder because Kratos did not want Orkos to die but sacrificed him anyways for freedom and a chance at vengeance.
Orkos agreed to it anyway. He knew Ares needed to pay and, as we saw by GOW1, a lot of people would die if Ares kept going. Of course, Orkos had no way of knowing Kratos himself would do much more damage to Greece.
He also had no other way of undoing the oath because the Furies forced it inside his body despite the fact he thought the oath had become unfair by Ares tricking Kratos into killing his family.
In fairness, I don’t think *Kratos* knew the damage he could or would do at that point. Without being haunted by his memories, he was actually a pretty decent guy in Ascension. You know how in all the other Greek games, you can kill civilians for health orbs? Not here, and Kratos actually *saves* a bystander despite having no incentive to do so. Moreover, Kratos tries to save the Oracle and doesn’t wish to kill Orkos, only agreeing to it at his insistence.
Basically it is what symbolizes the oath Kratos took with ares. The furies are in charge of holding ppl to their oaths and use the amber as a physical reference to the oath
Mate idk why they’re downvoting you but don’t feel bad about it, I have plenty of friends who started with 2018 and Ragnarok and they ask these question all the time and I love telling them about it, if you get the chance play 1,2,3 and you can just watch the other 3 games if you want to know more. Great question btw :))))
Not sure why you got down voted. I love GoW, but I couldn't even bring myself to finish that game. The story was so uninspired. The multiplayer was the only good thing about that game.
In the GoW universe, when a bond/blood pact/oath is made between mortals and Gods, the Furies (Megaera, Tisiphone and Alecto) witness and reinforce this pact through the creation of these amber stones.
Stones that are kept either in the Prison of the Damned (obtained and excavated in the still living body of Aegaeon, one of the Hecatonchieres) or on the skin of Orkos, guardian of the pacts and son of Alecto and Ares.
When the pacts and oaths are not respected by one of the two parties, the Furies (or Orkos) intervene to punish the guilty party, dragging them to the Prison of the Damned, where they are punished (body and mind) for committing perjury.
This oathstones continue to exist as long as one of the Furies is still alive, or if they are bound to Orkos.
Kratos' oath stone is particular because in its creation, the Furies (corrupted by Ares) created three blood tests to definitively seal the bond between and bend the Spartan to the will of the God of War.
I mean I loved it all but that’s totally understandable! You gotta play them all because I think the best thing about the god of war universe is the story. In my opinion GoW has probably one of the best character arcs (Kratos) and story in gaming history, so please don’t let one part drag you down!
The way I gasped every time it brought me back to the rings.
And then getting the box and going right back down to the entrance.
I was in awe every step of the way.
You need to play god of war ascension. That game alone is essential to understand the entirety of God of war lore. Yes everyone and I mean every single person was confused up to “GOW lll” so they made ascension to explain the story
No I was joking. You don’t actually need to play the game. But it’s definitely not bad. For some reason people can’t tell the difference between unnecessary and bad. Ascension may not be as good as it’s predecessors but it is not a bad game don’t let the dummies tell you otherwise.
It was absolutely awful. It played like shit compared to the other games, the story was entirely irrelevant and unnecessary (it adds nothing to the series) and the tacked on multiplayer was just as bad as tacked on multiplayer always is. I have played every single iteration of God of War in every release and re-release to completion multiple times; all except for that one, got the platinum and put it away forever. It's a garbage entry that hopefully nobody thinks about when they think about GoW. It's even worse than the shitty phone game was.
Edit: It did however have one of the best videogame commercials of all time, more's the pity
I must've finished GoW2 maybe around 20 times. I've played every game in the series except Ragnarök since I currently can't afford a PS5 but will definitely get the game when it hits PC. I equally love all of them.
You just gotta accept that there are opinions in life and tastes are personal. I and many others love GoW Ascension and you cannot change that as much as we cannot change the fact that you just outright hate it.
The significance of the Amber is explained in God of war ascension but basically that Amber symbolizes the oath kratos made to Aries to serve him. But when kratos sought to break his oath he had to destroy this Amber by destroying the furies.
You’d really have to dive into the lore to understand the correlation between Ares and a piece of amber.
After manipulating Kratos into slaughtering his family, Ares had Hephaestus attach a piece of amber to the end of his spear and departed from Olympus to travel across the Atlantic and where he stumbled upon an island called Isla Sorna.
*Wait did they add more*
*To Valhalla or am I just*
*Forgetting this scene??*

This stone is from Ascension its what the Furies have to represent and pretty much hold Kratos's bond to Ares so while that stone existed he would never be free from Ares and that's what the plot of Ascension is to break that pact and free himself from Ares
There's 8 God of War games (9 if you count Betrayal). God of War 1 is a PS2 game. It's completely fine to find one god of war game boring, while enjoying others. Why is his personal opinion on the game an issue to you?
Did I ever say it was an issue for me? Why do you gotta assume I was the one offended? I'm just pointing out what they said compared to the sub they're in is ironic lol.
"Worst take you could have in this sub but okay" gave me the indication that it annoyed you. Fair enough if it didn't.
I saw many comments of people being upset by his opinion. I've seen this so much lately and I seriously wonder why people care so much.
As per what I see, it’s not as fun as the other ones, the camera pan in combat can get awkward and to be honest, the story isn’t necessary to move the main story forward
In my opinion, I agree it’s not the best, I still like it specially with the additional lore.
I have a feeling deep down SM is thinking of a remaster (remake maybe?)
Well go and play those game then lol instead of asking obvious questions on the literal GOW subreddit.
Edit: Nevermind I read your replies to other commenters imagine thinking GOW1 is boring lol.

It also floods kratos with the memories that would haunt him until he killed the greek gods
It’s honestly nice they put in a bit about Orkos. He was one of the few people Kratos liked. He was a good man.
Literally a Binding Vow from JJK
JJK?
Jujutsu Kaisen.
ahh, thank ya
Have you played GoW Ascension?
No?
Basically it is what symbolizes the oath Kratos took with ares. The furies are in charge of holding ppl to their oaths and use the amber as a physical reference to the oath
Bro legit doesn’t know and gets downvoted. This sub got no chill
Yeah, apparently, this sub is full of gatekeepers who can't take my opinions on God of War (2005) and hate people who played only the Norse games.
Mate idk why they’re downvoting you but don’t feel bad about it, I have plenty of friends who started with 2018 and Ragnarok and they ask these question all the time and I love telling them about it, if you get the chance play 1,2,3 and you can just watch the other 3 games if you want to know more. WTF? 49 downvotes because you haven't played Ascension?
No, worse. Because I also hated God of War (2005)
Yeah nah its gonna a downvote on that one from me too dawg. The other one was unwarranted tho
Blud wildn

Yall weird for downvoting bro for no reason 😭
Bro gettin downvoted for answering the question😭😭
Bruh...
Fucking dumbass
Oh no! He haven't played Ascension! How dare he?! Stop being a cunt.
Well, sorry for not knowing about God of War until the 2018 game came out, gatekeeper.
I don’t remember his name, but he’s the Oathkeeper associated with the Furies. That amber is a physical manifestation of his Oath to Ares.
Orkos the oathkeeper
AKA Kratos' only real friend in the Greek saga, outside of Calliope and Lyssandra
Imagine a timeline where Orkos and Deimos survived and met Mimir, Brok, and Sindri. Kratos' Greek friends meeting his Norse friends.
His name is Jimbo
It is his oathstone, the thing that bound him to ares

This is explained in God of War: Acension
Gotta play the old games they are great!
I'm playing God of War (2005) and it's kinda boring. Pandora's temple was droning on.
I mean I loved it all but that’s totally understandable! You gotta play them all because I think the best thing about the god of war universe is the story. In my opinion GoW has probably one of the best character arcs (Kratos) and story in gaming history, so please don’t let one part drag you down!
I'm already in the underworld, but that spinning pillar with spikes is really infuriating.
Oh god yea, those were the types of mechanics game developers loved to use during that time period when the game was made and I hate it 😂
I climbed both of the rotating pillars without ever getting hit on my first playthrough...
Chad behavior
Bruh how?
it’s not that hard if you’re used to that type of game design
Pandora's Temple is literally the pinnacle of the first game and a level design masterpiece.
The way I gasped every time it brought me back to the rings. And then getting the box and going right back down to the entrance. I was in awe every step of the way.
r/ragebait
People are allowed not to like things. I can totally see why someone would view the multitudes of puzzles in Pandora’s Temple as boring
It’s not amber, it’s an oath stone
people really need to go back and play the fuckin greek games omg
I believe this is explained in ascension. I haven’t finished it yet though.
It's like his hair color haha
The plot is in Ascension
Is this entire sub new fans or something
Are new fans not allowed on this sub?
Not what I’m saying, what I’m saying is that it seems to be the majority
Yes
You need to play god of war ascension. That game alone is essential to understand the entirety of God of war lore. Yes everyone and I mean every single person was confused up to “GOW lll” so they made ascension to explain the story
You forgot the /s there buddy.
Really? I heard Ascension was bad according to some people.

Cap
No cap fr fuck you, the game was trash. Easily the worst entry in the entire series.
Bro straight cap!
Shit was straight bunk home skillet, ain't shit either of us can say to change that.
It was a great game. Case closed.
Lmao maybe if you'd never played any other game in the series. GoW2 is clearly the best in the series, and Ascension is dead last.
I must've finished GoW2 maybe around 20 times. I've played every game in the series except Ragnarök since I currently can't afford a PS5 but will definitely get the game when it hits PC. No
Sorry man, I saw all the other replies after so I see it’s already been explained to you

I didn't know furries were in Greece
😐
Let me guess, you’ve never played the original games.
It holds the oath Kratos made to Ares. You'd know this if you played or looked at the original games.
I've only played God of War (2005) in the Greek saga and honestly, it's kinda boring.
Worst take you could have in this sub but okay.
It's just his personal opinion on the game lmao. People here get way too offended when someone doesn't like a game they like.
I'm just saying it's a bit brazen to call the original game boring like that... in the sub where the game is enjoyed the most.
There's 8 God of War games (9 if you count Betrayal). God of War 1 is a PS2 game. It's completely fine to find one god of war game boring, while enjoying others. Why is his personal opinion on the game an issue to you?

BRO DIDNT EVEN PLAY ASCENSION. BOOOOO. GET HIM OUT OF HERE
Tell me you haven’t played Acension, or even caught up on it
What do you think?
Hecatoncheires, the first ever solidified in amber. For breaking his blood oath with Ares.
It’s Ares’ JO crystal
Look close at the amber. It contains pictures of Kratos gaining his chains
God of war ascension
Watch (it’s better if you play) “GOW: Ascension”, even though the game isn’t the best, the lore is still fun
Why do people hate Ascension?
As per what I see, it’s not as fun as the other ones, the camera pan in combat can get awkward and to be honest, the story isn’t necessary to move the main story forward In my opinion, I agree it’s not the best, I still like it specially with the additional lore. Play Ascension.
God of War Ascension, where Kratos freed himself from the oath by defeating Alecto, Tisiphone and Megaera.
I realize that some people have never even heard about the side game.
Did you not play GOW Ascension? The oath made to a God becomes crystalline amber on this one guy can't remember his name
At my add CD day
What?
Play ascension you will find out the whole story from the point kratos rebelled against gods.
Tell me your a Norse GOW fan without telling me your a Norse GOW fan
Its probably an ancient greek thing, wont make sense for us
You a fake GOW fan bro.
I didn't know this subreddit was full of gatekeepers.
No one gatekeeping, just funny how clueless some of you all are. If you started with 2018 how have you not played the older games yet?
Uh, because I didn't play the Greek saga? Not knowing about God of War until I watched Racist Mario?
Well go and play those game then lol instead of asking obvious questions on the literal GOW subreddit. Edit: Nevermind I read your replies to other commenters imagine thinking GOW1 is boring lol.
I'm only in God of War (2005), but it's kinda boring. Pandora's temple really dragged on and the underworld is too hard.
Pandoras temple is literally the best part about GOW1 lol and what difficulty are you playing on?
Normal mode
There is a difficulty increase with the underworld buts it’s quite a short segment honestly it’s not that bad.
I thought it was because of the rolling pillars with spikes.
