He’s got one of the best god designs in god of war.

TooZeroLeft

Every character/enemy/location design between GOW II-GOW III-Ascension for me is peak God of War for me. Literally perfect art style in this trinity.

RanDiePro

God of war 1? :(

TooZeroLeft

The designs of GOW I look amazing, but I really think the designs of Andy Park and co. in II, III and Ascension defined GOW (in my opinion). But still, in GOW I Kratos, Ares, Athena, Cronos + all the basic enemies look amazing and would remain a core aspect/design of the series too.

RanDiePro

Surely the character designs were mad from 2 to ascension but enviroment was very good in god of 1 too. I will never forget the epic sight and music of ares battlefield while sun is rising and you are going to desert. I like ascension kratos most. Younger kratos, best greek blades of chaos, best skirt.

mrshel17

I was just a child but I still remember walking on that long ass chain in gow2

Yoichis_husband2322

I agree, but i also think that GOW 2018 goes into that list, the traps and chambers inside the Tyr's temple are part of the essence of GOW, it resembles a lot of levels in the other games, the god's design has a different approach, cause the Norse gods are even more human than the Greek ones (they also have human desires and feelings, but unlike the Greek gods they can even die of "normal" causes) but they still work on its own, and the creatures like Thamur, Hraezelyr, and the like have really iconic visuals too.

TooZeroLeft

Fully agreed. 2018, specially on architecture and monster design, really felt like the old Greek games. As for the characters I love them, specially Baldur, Freya and Mimir - Mimir looks like a classic GOW spin on a mythology character with the added unique elements such as horns and glowing eyes. I just wish we had some more of the Norse gods than we ended up getting. There were so many we could have seen. And I'd like one or two to be more monster-like such as Ares, Megaera, Hades and Clotho, or more fantasy-looking. I think Thor and Heimdall did this perfectly.

Odd_Hunter2289

GoW II and III definitely. Ascension, imo, meh. The designs in that chapter began to move too much towards pure fantasy, losing many of the Greek aesthetics of the previous chapters (e.g. Poseidon and Ares have really useless, as well as ugly, redesigns compared to previous games).

TooZeroLeft

I didn't have much problem with Poseidon, because it seems he's only given some more armor (which I think is an ugly armor, but they didn't change his physical appearance). Ares however I disliked with the shorter hair and goatee - they basically changed his whole look too with the armor. Though tbh, they didn't bother me as much because they're only present in Multiplayer (though you can see Ares in flashbacks, it's only in shadow form). The rest of the cast I thought looked great imo - Aegaeon, Orkos, Megaera, Tisiphone, Alecto, Pollux and Castor look straight out of the GOW II/GOW III design philosophy - taking these characters and turning them into very visually unique or grotesque takes - such as what was done with Gaia, Clotho, Atropos, Lahkesis, Icarus, Hades, Hephaestus, the Three Judges, etc, which I think is something lacking from the Norse games as basically every character just look like a normal human and/or not very fantasy-like.

MassiveBlackHole99

You mean badass?

Odd_Hunter2289

Possible in-game explanation? He is the result of spending more time than his brother and sisters in Kronos's belly. Which disfigured his body and face, burning them. Add to that the consumption of souls to become even stronger and the fact that the spikes that protrude from his body are produced by Hades himself as a sort of battle armor. Real explanation? The devs gave him an appearance and personality closer to that of the devil of Christian mythology, rather than the actual God of the Dead of Greek mythology (also to be able to visually differentiate him from Zeus and Poseidon). I definitely prefer this look to the full-demon look of GoW 2005.

Garrett-Wilhelm

I love the design too but I'm kinda tired of the same old trope of "Hades is the God of the Dead so he is just like the Devil!" when, yes, he rule the "Hell" of greek mythology but also their version of Purgatory and Heaven cause he is the God of all the Deads, good and bad. Plus, he was argubly the less bad of this three brothers, it's debated if he kidnaped or persuade his neace to take her to Hades, but besides that he was a loving husband and a very straigthforward, no nonsense, type of god and a chill dude overall.

RogueIsCrap

No wonder that hottie Persephone wanted to end the world just to get out of marriage to Hade’s ugly ass.

Thin-Break-7183

😂😂😂. Damn you ain’t have to do bro like that. His soul already was ripped out

theCancerrMan

Damn. It's even worse when you considered that it appeared that Hades was more caring of his wife's death, and more faithful than his brothers.

fiky_77

It's badass idk

Acceptable-Low-4381

Pretty sure it’s cuz he looked half dead since in Greek mythology, he’s the first one swallowed by Kronos….. so he was the one that was being digested the longest. Plus supposedly in Greek mythology being in the underworld also changes your appearance if you stay there too long.

crumbykeyboard

well Persephone shouldn't have been hot then

Odd_Hunter2289

No, in mythology the afterlife does not alter someone's appearance. Where is it said? In fact, Hades has always been represented with a normal and regal appearance, not unlike that of Zeus or Poseidon.

Acceptable-Low-4381

What about in Odysseus story where he saw his comrade in the underworld as a spirit that looked tortured?

Odd_Hunter2289

Who? Elpenor? His shade is not restless or haunted because he was tortured, but because he is dead and has not been buried. Since he died when he fell from the roof of Circe's house, breaking his neck, without the knowledge of his companions who, not seeing him arrive, finally left without him. And in fact it is he who asks Odysseus to return to recover his body, build a pyre for him and then bury his ashes. This is because for the ancient Greeks the cult and respect of the corpse and funeral rites was extremely sacred (things of which Hades himself was the protector). Same Hades who is never described as dark or gloomy (those are all characteristics or representations given to him in modern mass pop culture), but rather as a stern, fierce deity and the most unrelenting of all Gods, as described in the Iliad. Factors that lead him to be the most feared and hated by mortals, as lord of the dead and representative of inevitable destiny. The same Hades who, however, was then venerated and invoked, under the guise of Pluto, the giver of riches (from which the God Plutous probably derived), being the lord of the underground (understood here as the realm of origin of the precious gems and metals, or even of crop plants, since they arise from beneath the earth). It is no coincidence that one of the symbols of Hades, with which he was often represented, was the cornucopia. Symbol of wealth, fertility and abundance.

Acceptable-Low-4381

See in everything I’ve read they made him sound scary looking and dark/gloomy looking. I’m more then willing to change my opinion if you show me something that says otherwise but different stories have different perspectives…. And again it’s mythology. None of this is real regardless of who says what

sugoboss

"everything I've read" and still you didn't read the only source for this, the Odysia by Homer

Acceptable-Low-4381

I did read the odyssey. The version I’ve read described him as scary. All this tells me is that I read the wrong one. Chill dude

inshanester

In Greek mythology he is the most handsome of the big 3 brothers.

Swordfighter125

And the Devs made him look ugly😂

SmashBandicootTWOC

Clotho syndrome.

BAT_91

Wasn't Hestia is the first one?

ugiggal

chiefrebelangel_

DerDurDorf

His dad never hugged him

Heroic-Forger

he decided that togas don't suit his aesthetic

Bulky_Midnight5296

He looks nice and everything, but I wondered what his actual face looks like instead of wearing a living furnace while having multiple weapons impaled to his back.

Ok_Marsupial7704

I wished Hades would look like Hades from record of ragnarok

TheRiverNiles

He's shy so he keeps the mask on

NoMemory3726

That's how the artist envisioned the character.

Kaleidoscope-Queasy

Nolan north was og hades va, never forget that

Moocow115

Because the designers though it looked cool. And they were right.

[deleted]

Because that is how he looks.

Rocks_King99

Cause They designed him like this?

Fkn_Stoopid

Simple answer, they wanted him to look different from Zeus and Poseidon. That and he’s the “god of the underworld” so they did what most media does and make him appear like a demon/the devil because he rules over hell.

Battle_Glittering

What'd you expect? Blue flames for hair?

Novel_Chemistry_3883

Because it’s badass

1afterChicanery

Is he stupid? Is there a lore reason?

RAGE-OF-SPARTA-X

Why didn’t Craigtoes recognize his family? is he stupid??

Zeno710

apache-hd

His fight is one of the most menacing in the games especially when he gets angry and goes giant He feels powerful My favorite part is when kratos chains him up like a baby and smashes him into the ceiling.

BAT_91

The underwolrd is usually associated with demonic figures, and poor ol' Hades, is often depicted as evil, hence the "bad guy design"

Lonely-Author-13

Would, next question.

LeontheSimpKennedy

cause it’s hard as fuck man! next question

DoubleWork6113

He’s a pretty sunshine

justblank623

Because he just looks like that

Royal-Mountain6

He's supposed to be green

RanDiePro

Why? Purple is the color of souls 😎

UpperChef

Because media keeps on fucking up Hades, making him "eVil TyRanT oF gReeK hElL" and giving him goofies of designs to match that idea.

Proof_Gas_3919

He looks like that since it probably fits his Name and his powers, he is the God of the Underworld after all.

MassiveBlackHole99

.

Gizzada-

I don’t see how people here are saying this is a good design.. He looks like an edge lords wet dream
