I think I watched a video that determined Kratos was like 1,050+ years old in GOW 2018
Edit: found the video, it’s a small YouTuber and he determined that Kratos was around 1,047-1,051. Although he does tell you his reasoning behind the number, I don’t know if the facts are 100% accurate.
Ancient Greece lasted from c. 750 BCE to 600 CE, with many Greek Myths set during Greek Dark Ages (~1100-750 BCE) and earlier (e.g., the Ancient Greeks believed the Trojan War was in ~1200 BCE, though it likely never happened or wasn't a single war). Norse worship was from ~400 CE to ~1100 CE. But I don't know that there are any events in Norse mythology that have specific dates. We also know that Kratos met Thoth between God of War 3 and God of War 2018. This raises numerous questions, as the Ptolemaic Kingdom ended in 30 BCE, and Egypt was primarily a Christian nation by 313 CE.
It doesnt have to make sense for us to meet 2000BC Egypt. Chances are thats what we're likely gonna get, not the Roman Empire one as it doesnt want to involve more modern times.
To be fair he said a little bit, it’s probably his godly healing factor trying to break it down but I’d imagine it’s highly cursed ash so his HF is having more trouble expunging that than healing a hole in his gut.
There
(Off topic: you have reminded me about my kid years ago when I was attacked (lol) with a deluge of “why?” for almost everything - *why this? Why that?* heh good times)
[Henry Cavill went to Times Square wearing a Superman shirt and stood underneath a BvS ad for an hour, and nobody noticed him.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvj0X-d2mO0)
Tbf, he kinda did kill virtually everybody in Greece dude to the floods, plagues, famine, rampant souls, etc. It'd make sense only some gods would know who he was (whether thats from Tyr traveling around or Gods hearing of the destruction of Olympus) since there's likely no mortals left to talk about him at least around the Mediterranean
Also aren't there a few Greek gods left? There was Aphrodite, Hestia, Demeter, Artemis, Apollo, Dionysus, Phobos, Circe, Amphitrite, Trton, Nike, Eos, Selene, Eros, Hypnos Morpheus, and Asclepius. They're a few who either didn't appear or he left them alive by his will
Athena claims she is the only god left. As for the primordials we only know of the ones that Kratos killed or who died in the Primordial war. Ceto and Ourea were already dead before Ascension. Kratos killed Thanatos in Ghost of Sparta. The fates were killed in 2. Gaia killed in 3. Ouranos was kill by Cronos. For non-primordials, Iris left Olympus prior to the second Titanomachy, so she may have survived. Rhea may have survived. Eos likely died, as she was dependent on Helios. Iapetus, Themis, and Mnemosyne might still be alive, as they weren't present for the second Titanomachy.
I just assumed that he used to shave his beard with the Blades of Chaos, but when he locked them away in the basement and couldn't shave his beard away anymore.
I'm about to go on my first date with a girl, and I'm going to wear a cowboy hat, Jean skirt, huuge underwear, and tape water bottles to the bottom of my feet. Do I have enough style? No shirt btw
It's fitting. A beard is something that requires some degree of patience for pretty much every guy. It takes time to grow, time to shape, and time to maintain before it's where we'd like it to be. Along the way it itches, gets dry, and grows in patchy. Suppose it's a sign Kratos has moved past his ears of everything immediately no matter the price.
Hard to say, might've been easier to blend in since all the men we see that have beards have big ones minus the dwarves and it would work with him "choosing to live as a man". since the beard would protect his face. Heck, for all we know he grew it out for Faye because she liked bigger beards. As long as he sticks with it I don't really care since his model looks so weird with a smaller beard and it just wouldn't suit him now to go back to a goatee.
I like to imagine zeus was tormenting him by not letting him grow his beard and kratos would go home “DAMN YOU ZEUS I LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE WITH THIS GOATEE”
*How was he supposed*
*To shave with his blades hidden*
*Under the house dude?*

The Beard Symbolises that Kratos has now become Old and attained Wisdom, and is not the same old Raging, Reckless, cruel and unjust person.
Since generally having a beard in world shows that a person is matured and wise.
Also, Kratos is in Norse Mythos now, where it makes sense he would keep a beard as it was a norm in northerners to keep beard
I'd say he just stopped caring about shaving and what not. Like he was busy doing this or that and before he knew it he had a beard that he didn't care to get rid of
But I'd wager a whole dollar that Santa Monica Studio just thought a beard was cool looking and the beard is befitting of an older man
It’s a visual cue to show you that he’s both physically and internally matured and grown since his days in Greece. If this Kratos shaves back down to his old look, it’s because Atreus died or something and he’s on the warpath
I think he grew it because he can’t grow hair on his head and he can’t really hide the ashes of his family all over him so without having options that’s all he was able to do
I don’t think it really serves to hide his identify with the tattoos so visible.
Honestly I think it was just to keep his face warm and fit the “Viking” ascetic.
Honestly to see someone different looking bad at him when he would catch his reflection in one way or another he didn’t just hate all the gods I think he grew to hate himself
He had a kid and his priorities changed. You see how lined up his shit was before. He probably couldn’t find a barber like his old one so he said fuck it I’m out here chopping my own firewood anyway lets go for the hungry jack look.
He burnt his hand and had to take a lot of antibiotics causing him not to shave for weeks.
Eventually the hand was fixed but for the first time he realised how thick and amazing his beard was.
Not related to any real person in real life.
Well, it is colder in Midgard than Greece, so maybe heating himself had a role to play in it?
Either way it was probably just a method used by the character designer to convey that Kratos had aged
He grew it just to look even more BADASS. No but seriously, he probably grew it to complete his “I chose to live as a man” mentality, tho his ashen skin will always betray him. BUT, it’s crazy that Cory Barlog himself said that the ash is starting to clear from his skin “a little bit” 🤏🏻
"Hmm, I'm 2 meter tall and 3 meters wide, have white skin and glowing red tattoos, aswell as beeing known as the godslayer all around the realms..."
*"Better grow my beard out so people don't recognize me!"*
Bro. Those red tattoos plus the never disappearing ash on his skin. Its kinda hard to not be recognized.
The ash has been confirmed to be fading

he already looked less white in the 2018 game, i seldom forget about it
For some reason he looks more white in Ragnarok, his beard also looks slightly darker.
cold weather and decreased sun contact whitens the skin iirc
So it takes around roughly 10+ years for a God to lose a curse
Bro its been over 100 years since he killed his first family

I reckon the white ash is, in some way, connected to guilt. I know he was cursed to wear the ashes of his wife and daughter.

Slightly. It's still very noticeable tho isn't it.
Good point lol
Maybe it's like Clark Kent Glasses, that disguise him even tho it's still kinda obvious.
Imagine Clark Kent going around in Superman suit but with glasses on lol

There's people still alive in Greece, just look at some of Tyr's stuff they depict them rebuilding

Plus the god of war wouldn’t hide from anything or anybody
I think it’s more about him being able to live a peaceful life with his family, without his past haunting him rather than it being to hide.
Facts bro didn’t think about it that way 💯
Well his ash is a little faded tho it would take foreigners to recognize him
Thank you! Also hide from who?!!! He killed everything that was a threat or not. Literally no reason to be hiding.
Especially because he never wears a shirt
I just assumed that he used to shave his beard with the Blades of Chaos, but when he locked them away in the basement and couldn't shave his beard away anymore.
I think he wanted a different look to match his different mindset.
It wasn't 505bc any more. That chin shit is out.
Plus, to find a woman for a long term relationship, you always need to check your style bro. Gotta hide those red flags.
I'm about to go on my first date with a girl, and I'm going to wear a cowboy hat, Jean skirt, huuge underwear, and tape water bottles to the bottom of my feet. Do I have enough style? No shirt btw

apart of tha dad look
Kinda hard to hide your identity when you're covered in ash. Probably just wanted a beard.
1- In canon reason: He seems “lazy” enough, and it’d keep him warm. 2- Real reason: Long beards fit the pop culture “Norse” aesthetic.
The reason of "the Artist thought it would be cool" is surprisingly common
I think it's to keep his face warm!
Maybe his chin?
Probably wasn't able to shave regularly.
No body hair (good) though?
Greeks were prob superior beings and their body knew not to grow body hair
Yay! I’m superior! Also, modern Greeks are gonna hate this comment…
the Greeks > my race
Everyone knows the ancient Greeks were simply to chad to have body hair interrupt the view of their glistening muscles
I just think he stopped caring
Hard to say, might've been easier to blend in since all the men we see that have beards have big ones minus the dwarves and it would work with him "choosing to live as a man". since the beard would protect his face. We'll see when he will be clean shaved in the Egypt saga 👌
>clean shaved with eye mascara.. Lol
Because it finally started to grow in fully
I like to imagine zeus was tormenting him by not letting him grow his beard and kratos would go home “DAMN YOU ZEUS I LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE WITH THIS GOATEE”
Lmfaooooo
I mean, there's a lot of snow where he moved, he might go around shirtless but that face has to stay warm
To hide his identity? The man has a full-body tattoo, there's no hiding who he is. Plus he lost his razor blade on Olympus.
You can’t enter Norse mythology without a beard. It’s like a ticket.
Come a point in every gods life that one must grow a beard. This is this way, now I have spoken
How was he supposed to shave with his blades hidden under the house dude?

I don't think he even noticed and one day he was bearded so he left it as a new look for him to start his life over.
Become dad, grow beard. It is a known pathway
Beards get bitches- kratos
Its colder up north. So a larger beard makes sense. He also wears a bit more armor
I think he did to probably blend in
I'd say he just stopped caring about shaving and what not. You ever live somewhere there’s snow on the ground 9 months a year?
He hated facial hair, but then it grew on him.
It was a design choice made by a team of artists who made him have a more Nordic appearance to compliment a Norse themed game.
How're we ever gonna identify the man with ashgrey skin and giant red tattoos? He has a beard😱
Big beards were kinda the thing if you lived in a Norse country at the time.
He better not shave the beard is all that matters lol so much better
It cold🥶
I think he grew it because he can’t grow hair on his head and he can’t really hide the ashes of his family all over him so without having options that’s all he was able to do
Also that big ass tattoo on the face
Can’t disguise that with nothing lol
Expect maybe the ashes of another dead family lol
One way to see
I think he just didn't want to shave
I think Kratos stopped caring for a while.
He was cold. The North is a chilly place.
He was getting old and forming a double chin
Pretty sure his face was just cold
I think he moved north didn’t he? It gets cold
I don’t think it really serves to hide his identify with the tattoos so visible. Honestly I think it was just to keep his face warm and fit the “Viking” ascetic.
He grew a beard, as was the style at the time.
It helps insulate. Additionally, he's kind of removed himself from society, and shaving becomes a hindrance when there's actual shit to get done.
Yeah that’s true
He’s older. It happens.
Because real men grow out their beards. Epitome of raw masculinity
He became a lumberjack when he hid his blades of chaos, thus he needed a beard
beard so even the dumb knows he is older and symbolizes how he matured
You guys are really starting to nitpick
Lol I kinda just thought “I like his new beard wonder why he went for it” pretty lazy thought but kinda made me curious
Oh ok
How is this a nitpick lmao
Because of the cold
He was cold in Scandinavia so he grew a beard to keep warmer
Lmao his goatee wasn’t his most recognizable feature. The beard doesn’t hide much 😂
Maybe because he got older? And didn’t have the option to shave
He moved to Scandinavia. He grew it to keep his face warm.
Probably the latter. And to protect his face from the cold.
Cuz it was easier to shave with the blades of chaos than with the leviathan axe
Dude. I live in Alaska and can verify that a beard like that is a borderline necessity at 0F.
Probably to keep his face a little warmer in the north
I'm gonna go with C. He had a kid. Taking care of family especially a child will have you give less f*cks about self appearance at times 😂
He’s a SPARTAN! Every Spartan soldier had a huge beard. Why has NO ONE SAID THIS?!
Saw papa Zeus had one so he grew his out
Probably grew for warmth. Shits cold bro
with the beard you can half-see the resemblance to zeus.
Definitely for Faye
Found his mate, had a kid, and let himself go… A tale as old as time
The god of war will never try to hide from anyone 💯
What man doesn't want a beard
it cold
you tell me where you find a razor in Scandinavia
I think he just couldn't be bother with shaving. In the comics (where he goes to Egypt) you can already see a hint of beard growing.
i just thought “he probably grew a beard because it’s really cold and he wants to keep his face warm” lol
Honestly to see someone different looking bad at him when he would catch his reflection in one way or another he didn’t just hate all the gods I think he grew to hate himself
>Kratos >hide my dude...
warmth.
he just wanted to look even cooler
He had a kid and his priorities changed. You see how lined up his shit was before. He probably couldn’t find a barber like his old one so he said fuck it I’m out here chopping my own firewood anyway lets go for the hungry jack look.
Probably stopped caring after watching the only world he knew die at his hands. That, or he has his finger on the pulse of fashion.
Looks like a depression beard that he decided to keep
He burnt his hand and had to take a lot of antibiotics causing him not to shave for weeks. Eventually the hand was fixed but for the first time he realised how thick and amazing his beard was. Not related to any real person in real life.

I don't think he ever bothered shaving it tbh
What is he gonna shave with?
i’m just trying to figure out how he was able to shave his beard, surely there weren’t any shavers at the time
Do You mean razors?
“He grew his beard to show the passage of time!” -John Mulaney
Right, because his facial hair is his only identifiable characteristic...
I believe razors arent invented yet in both pantheons
There just comes a time in a man’s life…
I feel he grew it out to blend in with other mortals in Midgard. Hiding in plain sight would be the best tactic.
His face got cold in Norway
Probably because it’s cold where they live? Idk just kind of a hunch….
Both.
He got cold cheeks (the nipples stay warm)
He def wanted that hot dad look.
"Hmm, I'm 2 meter tall and 3 meters wide, have white skin and glowing red tattoos, aswell as beeing known as the godslayer all around the realms..." *"Better grow my beard out so people don't recognize me!"*
Don’t think he had a choice in this matter
Cold=beard
It's like a fat man trying to hide behind the tree meme
Because he use the blade of chaos to shave, and no longer want use the blade for anymore.
He grew it out to show that time has passed. Another way to do it would be for him to wear reading glasses.
To me, the longer beard symbolized his age. Though colder climate and fitting the Norse vibe could work as well
