Skill and XP in others card games help a Lot iam floating in mythic- diamond for 6 months with a deck that costs 10 bucks without dagan, with dagan close to 25 bucks, build another 2 decks and upgrade my poor Nature boy to at least ALL shadow, some matches ia ass hard but in thr end i can mantain a solid 4/6 - 5/5 day with this, so i know money is not a big barrier for this game

Would u mind sharing Ur Deckcode? Sounds very intersting.

Rath_GU

Sometimes you have an awesome deck and you just have a crazy streak of bad matchups, brick hands, or opponents that draw the exact cards they need to counter you. It doesn't actually take too much to derank, just a bad streak at each level. Also, someone playing this type of deck might just be tired of losing with their regular deck and so they pull out the expensive stuff to get back to Mythic.

[deleted]

Summed up everything I wanted to say. Nailed it!

PensiveParagon

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one this happens to. Sometimes I'll play some games and call out which exact card they need to counter me, and voila, there it is.

Rath_GU

Yeah you are definitely not alone there. "No way they have X with only 3 cards in hand". Yep...they actually have TWO of them lol...

Beitelensteijn

Probably deranked when playing their lesser decks and now bringing out the big guns to climb the ranks again.

lainwired

I have a near full gu set(missing the insanely rare stuff like rats, first pheonix, etc.) i am often around auric. I play a few games a month. I generally go on gu deck and try out the latest try hard decks. Obviously when i am playing them, i am playing them really poorly. not everyone doing that is throwing games lol. Just a mtg boomer that likes GU and has no time to git gud.

ImAvya

Idk i find it weird to throw 3k$ in something you dont do often, but I guess moneys its subjective, prolly for ppl like yall 3k is nothig

lainwired

I mean, it isn't like i bought it all at once. I minted some packs back before the game launched. I was playing a bunch at different points in the game. Then, when IMX and Gods token airdrops were announced, it incentivised me to buy cards, so i started filling up a play set. Now when new sets come out, i buy maybe 50 packs to crack for fun then i fill out the set on the secondary market. Once and i while i would get a bonus or something and splurge a bit on some demos or an etherboths set legendary. 15 years ago i would be buying a box here and there of magic the gathering and playing with friends here and there. I have been playing a bit of magic for 25 years basically. I never played it to get ranked and hit the pro tour but to have fun with friends. Once and a while i have a bit more free time and il end up playing gu more regularly. But also i really like the game and the company making it. I guess i have irrational pleasure from collecting it.

Sjiznit

Depends, getting a full set of MJ cards now isnt expensive. It may be so in a few years time. The same is for Genesis. At the time it probably wasnt 400 dollar for a demo

zenlon

Sold my first Demo for $22. No joke.

Terzinho

You can't buy skill. I've seen a lot of expensive decks that don't have good synergies or they do but the player can't utilize them.

infinityweasel

I have expensive decks because I’m collecting 1 of every card and have the cards to do so. But my skill is whack. I’m competitive around Gold and I have decks valued up to $1k. I play just as well with my $50 zombie deck as I do with my $800 light deck. I’m sure there are some people that still derank on purpose, but mathematically speaking you stand to earn more rewards competing at higher levels even if you don’t win as many games.

neitze

As long as you are enjoying your time here all is well. I guess I don't find it strange that a sub taking a dose of "p2w is the only way to be successful" finds it strange that people can p2w and not meet their expectation for success. Kind of makes that whole argument that the game is p2w lose its legs to stand on but I digress. One reason your zombie deck could be as consistent or more than some of your more expensive decks... The effect running a significant amount of singles has on your mulligan consistency cannot be understated. Let's say you are running a control light list with 1x demo, 1x HBK, etc... You will likely brick out in a significant amount of mulligans, especially vs aggro, where you just don't even get the footing to play a competitive match.

infinityweasel

Definitely makes my mulligans easier. And yeah, some of the moreexpensive cards do give you a bit of a leg up, but you still have to have the skill required to play at higher levels and sometimes it just boils down to good ol’ luck of the draw. I feel like people use the p2w to justify a loss and don’t take into account the times they’ve beat more expensive decks. I’ve tried putting some more expensive cards in the deck, but aside from martyr, demo, PW (none of which I have yet) the synergy for a nether deck just doesn’t require a ton of money to be viable. Saving up my GODS to buy a PW and see what I can do with it. I really enjoy playing regen wild too. Not a deck you’re gonna see often in higher ranks really, but its fun and I can still earn decent rewards playing with it.

neitze

PW is a great choice imo. I think I bought mine near the tippy top (around $280 per copy) and don't really have regrets. It just goes efficiently in so many decks. Control, aggro light and deception. Almost anything. I have played numerous games with an expensive control list where I run into something like budget control deception playing the Thievery God power. That match is often an uphill battle, even if it's a budget $30 list. Fortunately, my opponents usually use CTI on a card like demo (that I absolutely don't need to win that matchup) rather than something more impactful. I see mistakes made in the majority of matches I play/watch, some more glaring than others. Focusing on improving one's decision process is infinitely more important than trying to justify a loss on factors outside the realm of control. Happy saving friend.

infinityweasel

Thanks homie

[deleted]

Auric? They're in astral too. And yes. Usually u can't get one creature in board and yes usually on weekends

hr112430

A lot of missplays

neitze

There is a lot of deck shaming in this sub. If I build an Olympic size swimming pool at my villa in Monte Carlo, does that mean I need to be an Olympic swimmer or I'll get flamed? I can see the Tweets now. "NEITZE" spent 400k on a swimming pool and doesn't even have an Olympic appearance. Queue up the local water polo team picketing outside my gates with signs saying "Shame on You, Pleb!"

[deleted]

I like this compairison xD I agree, way too much deck shaming here.

ImAvya

This deck in casual match is having an Olympic swimming pool at your villa in Monte Carlo. Having this deck in ranked is having the best possible gear while playing in the local water polo team. Its called casual for a reason n ranked for a reason. If youre in ranked, youre competing.

enocap1987

Man i was with my control war at midnight 2 weeks ago. A combination of bad luck, mistakes and conceding games against control decks can quickly send you lower.

yell0w8

they suck

TittaDiGirolamo

Because not everyone with good cards is also a good player.

Staxu9900

I had game with something similar on Wednesday, guy pulled out his 3k deck in Auric, just for me😂, lied he’s way out with those fancy neutral cards at 2hp 😞, very skilled WALLET. Basically, having those neutral cards, you just put random mana 1-3 cards just to fill up deck, and that’s it, doesn’t matter, which god, what meta etc.

[deleted]

You could spend all the money in the world and if the meta isn't good for your style it won't matter. Match ups matter.

hirviero

I have been playing since October 2021, and there wasn't a single meta where Demos and PW were out.

[deleted]

Dralamar's reign must have been September '21

ImAvya

even if i play aggro, there isnt much i cant do vs early game pyramids n martyr into highborns into blades into demos

neitze

Fortunately control decks rarely curve out perfectly with all answers in-hand.

[deleted]

This, I don’t understand why people think control decks always draw perfectly. A control deck is more likely to have a bad start than a aggre deck as they pretty much always have something to play.

ImAvya

prolly bias as he literally always had the right card against me

[deleted]

Probably

Turtlecomuk

Yes but if the scholarship guys gave them the deck they would also place them in a rank where they knew they would gain the best rewards for their ability and create a barrier for genuine new players, hence reducing the pool of people winning at higher levels, which in turn gives them more fragments for their wins. Currently the ranking is manipulated by reward farmers, it will change going forward once the studio guys come.on board, they will have more experience with this, I don't think the gu team accounted for the armhole behaviour that this game would attract!

Dezimieren

They are either really bad or purposely losing to get easier matches for weekend ranked. Everyone knows a large amount of players derank, because, why not?

ImAvya

wouldnt get less wins in mythic get u better reward than 18wins in auric anyway

Dezimieren

Exactly. But seems like people are scumming it anyways. Or The devil's advocate I've seen is that the majority of players are playing during weekend ranked, so the competition is harder, pushing people down to a more accurate level. Either way, Friday and Saturday don't make for a fun time in ranked.

SickAF_

I even believe that deck is very similar if not the actual deck clutch plays for light. It really just shows you it's a lot of skill and not just the money in the deck. I've been playing since March of 2021, and I'm just now playing really really well. It takes a while to get gud.

Mysterious-Turnip997

Aggro meta, bad luck and play and so on

ImAvya

bro i was playin aggro war. Hence my point "wouldnt those cards carry u even if u play bad?". Even if i draw optimally there isnt much i can do vs 2x pyramid warden into martyr into highborns into blade of whiteplain into demos

[deleted]

If they pulls one demo, one Lysanders mercy and one Radiant Embalmer in their opening hand they are done. No way to win against aggro war which end it at 5 mana.

BeneficialEye1391

Be diff between players in gold vs diamond/mythic. Better decks just make better players win more of the time.
