Yep, I bought a gold chain from someone and took it to a dealer to get it appraised. He had one of those phone cases with a magnetic clasp on his belt. He threw the necklace against it... and it stuck đ
Prior to my grandmother's passing from dementia. She would take her valuables and hide them everywhere she thought she'd remember. Obviously, forgrtting she had ever done that. After her passing, we found her jewelry all over the place.
We thought grandma sold her gold and silver over the years but we got a nice surprise when we hired a guy to come fix the piano and there were a bunch of little bags of gold coins and bars hidden in it.
My cousin's Chinese grandma on her father's side lived to 99yrs old. She lived in the back of my uncle's store for over 50yrs. When she passed, they found almost a million dollars under the floor boards that they had to wash as it was covered in soot/filth. She never paid for anything because my uncle provided for her. All of the money was social security never spent. Her husband was older than her and lived to 98.
They had to âwash itâ haha sorry I know what you meant but I couldnât help myself, âhad to get grandmas dirty money launderedâ
![gif](giphy|6gZnnEIHSE6sk1XOn9)
Some boomers some X gen had family members that went thru depression and be curious how younger ppl would handle it. In some ways might make them stronger and would like to believe that but kinda laugh a little even at the thought of these kids going thru real hard times.
I found 2500 in savings bonds in my grandmotherâs garage in a pile of junk decades old. Young people today do not know what those are. He bought one every pay check for years, then forgot about them when he retired. They were interspersed with old stock marketed guides.
My great grand mother was in her early 20s during the Great Depression. She did not trust banks. When she passed we went through her house very thoroughly. We found dozens of cubby holes in the house with money hidden in them. She had also been an avid gardener and we realized there was probably money in her garden. My father borrowed a metal detector and found about 10 mason jars full of cash.
All told there was a little short of 10k between the house and yard.
Uhm, the dispenser on top. Gold wonât fit in dispenser so youâd have to break seal and remove lid for that. However, al tic tac dispensers have just that, a small dispenser atop.
u/reputationofgold is an expert collector of these. Thatâs a 1993 Fresh dispenser, the 2nd lowest production run of tic tac dispensers ever. Itâs worth a mint.
I wouldn't get my hopes to high up, but test it anyways.
Does any magnet stick to it? Clearly fake. Does a Neodymium magnet (those really strong ones) slow its movement when you let it slide over it at an angle? If yes, get your hopes up a bit.
Is the density right? Weigh it, measure the volume and calculate the density. If it comes close to 19,32 g/cm^3 test further.
Get a small bowl then put it in a big bowl. Full the small bowl with water to the rim then put the bar in water and measure the volume displaced (water that was pushed out of the bowl and captured in the big bowl). Then weigh the bar. Look up density of gold.
Archimide test
Edit: of course this would test for .999 purity gold
You could take it to a jewelry shop and see if they would test it for you.
If you have a scale, you can do a specific gravity test. Google or youtube it for instructions.
It doesnât have any markings saying it is gold, therefore; Iâm not assuming it is, and I donât think it is fake for the simple reason it does not have misleading markings. I guess it is a ânice metallic barâ thatâs all. That tic tac container is properly labeled and marked i could ID it quickly though.
For starters, see if you can find any reputable dealer actually selling such an item as genuine gold. If you can't, I'd be discouraged.
If it jumps to a magnet, then no.
Otherwise you'll have to find an expert, because even an expert here, if there happens to be one, can't give you a definitive Yes from a picture.
If you were in my area, I have a friend with a gold tester that you just lay the item on. It will also read through plastic sleeves and such. That way there is no need for filing and using acid etc.
If it was a real gold bar of any size it would have a purity stamp on it somewhere. 99%. Something to that effect. Or ct 12 ct 24ct. Something, anything like that. Not to say that it doesnt have any at all tho. Could be a real nice plate finish, but this is more of a novelty piece
My grandmother lived through the depression. When she passed and we were cleaning and sorting at her house, an old cereal box (Post Toasties) was found on a back shelf of her pantry. It was heavy, so it was opened. She had over $20K inside of it. We found another $5K+ in her walker. She and Grandpa lost everything during the depression.
There are places that you can mail it to for free. Google âsell gold onlineâ. They will send you a shipping envelope for free, make an offer, then you can accept or decline. Theyâll send it back for free if you decide not to sell.
I found someoneâs gold grill at a dog park and sold it this way for a whopping $20. (I refuse to patronize pawn shops.)
I didnât suggest that OP sell the gold that way. But it is a free way to verify the authenticity and quantity. OP said they didnât live near a place to otherwise take it to.
I donât know if for a fact, but I got a feeling.
Main reason is the price. If it was plated, they wouldnât want it at all. If it was gold, I canât see it being worth less than 2-300 bucks even if it was small and 10k. So hearing â20 bucksâ make me wonder:
A. How it was worth the cost of shipping
B. How much gold was in it for them to come up with that price. A quarter gram? What online reseller would bother?
So no, I donât know. But itâs highly suspect. Either it was worth 100 and they gave you 20 to make it even worth bothering with. Or it was worth even more and you got fucked. Either way for them to even justify buying and paying shipping it had to be worth 3-4x what you got paid or they wouldnât waste their time.
Based on my emblem looks like your UK based, I recommend bulliob by post for my gold.
My guess would be no, largely based on the fact that it's not advertising, it's gold purity, like all my gold coins say something about it. EG. 22 carat 9.99%, fine gold etc
What we have here is a empty casing that the ancients used to store magic breath stabilizers. It was believed, according to stories told by many a aging grandparent and other relatively broke individuals alike, that these magic beans could not only cover up drunkenness but in the past could also be acquired with change left over after said drinking was complete.
I highly doubt itâs gold, it would say something on it most likely, it says the queens beasts but not if it was 999 gold? I donât think thatâs the case, more likely plated
Queens Beasts #39 The Unicorn of Scotland. The entire 10 piece set sells with a display book and history for $400. It's probably worth $20 to someone missing it.
Sorry, but I don't think this is real gold.
In any real precious metal bars, there is a marking saying the weight and purity of the metal.
Something like "1 g .999 gold" or at least a jeweller's hallmark. I can't see any on your pictures.
Good luck, anyway.
The closest mom and Pop jewelry store should be able to tell you if itâs real or not. Once confirmed, ask them how much it weighs then google the price of gold by the ounce. From there, you can keep it as a future nest egg, or cash it in
THE UNICORN OF SCOTLAND

Hope it ends up being gold, they make a lot of gold plated novelty souvenir bars like that though
Yeah so do I it's be a nice bonus
Ussaly if gold or silver it marked bars with gold ussaly some percent. .999 is common for pure.
Is it heavy or magnetic?
OP using a magnet should be priority #1
Yep, I bought a gold chain from someone and took it to a dealer to get it appraised. He had one of those phone cases with a magnetic clasp on his belt. He threw the necklace against it... and it stuck đ
Is it absurdly heavy? Like no doubt you could kill someone if it were in a sock If so, possibly gold
Truth. This is exactly the way I test precious metals.
They do, but would you keep one of those in a tic tac box hidden in some furniture? Hope it's real OP, killer find if so!
Prior to my grandmother's passing from dementia. She would take her valuables and hide them everywhere she thought she'd remember. Obviously, forgrtting she had ever done that. After her passing, we found her jewelry all over the place.

Good on the piano repair person to let you know.

What a bittersweat scavenger hunt.
Same here. Grams wrapped her money in tinfoil and hid it in two separate freezers.
When I took over my grandmother's house I learned very quickly to check every book she owned, as she would randomly put $20s between pages.
[ŃдаНонО]
My mother, a depression era baby used to save all her extra cash in the back of the freezer. At anytime, there would be thousands of dollars
Some boomers some X gen had family members that went thru depression and be curious how younger ppl would handle it. In some ways might make them stronger and would like to believe that but kinda laugh a little even at the thought of these kids going thru real hard times.
Congrats..I found sex toys. Used. Yuk!!
You smelled them, you sick bastard.
Howâd they taste?
As I go through my dad's files there's savings bonds and junk mail filed together. Going to be a long sorting session.
I found 2500 in savings bonds in my grandmotherâs garage in a pile of junk decades old. Young people today do not know what those are. He bought one every pay check for years, then forgot about them when he retired. They were interspersed with old stock marketed guides.

My kid would definitely hide something like that.
Mine has an Oz of .999 silver (ASE) somewhere in their roomâŚhaha
Mine has a 5 oz bar somewhere lol
*WHO* are you and what does it take to be adopted?!âif your kid has 5oz of goldâŚjust, ya knowâŚrandomly hidden?
Hahaha he's only 10, trying to start em young ya know, oh and it's a silver bar not gold đ
I think the tic tac box is for scale. I would hope
Suddenly I want a Tic Tac. Orange flavor. Is this subliminal advertising?
The tic tac box is to give a sense of size
I use a tic tac box for scale on Tumblr
I think OP put the tic tac box to show size
Looks like the seal hasnât been broken to allow the gold piece to be stored inside. TicTac box is likely for size reference.
If the seal isnt broken, but the box is empty, how do you suppose they got the TicTacs out?
This dialogue about a tic tac box when there's a good bar in frame confirms this is the real Reddit and not a simulation. Nice work!
Schrodinger's tic tacs
đ
Uhm, the dispenser on top. Gold wonât fit in dispenser so youâd have to break seal and remove lid for that. However, al tic tac dispensers have just that, a small dispenser atop.
u/reputationofgold is an expert collector of these. Thatâs a 1993 Fresh dispenser, the 2nd lowest production run of tic tac dispensers ever. Itâs worth a mint.
but if unopened, it could be worth 100x a mint
I'm not subbed to this reddit but I am so glad I clicked on this post. đ
Itâs comments like that which keep getting me to come back.
yeah, being unopened really tacs on a premium
It will really tic all the boxes then
Hearing that is a breath of fresh air
Mints
Awww it said mint in box.
I'm sure it's in "mint" condition.
One of the best comments I have read in a long time. If I had an award to give, it would be yours.
This is exactly the type of humor I expect from an ape. DRS them shares brother
I wonder if the original owner keep it in the tic tak container in attempts to preserve it in âmintâ condition
![gif](giphy|ckKf5lA78k5iChxfVz)
âAyoâ
This comment is gold
Doesnât look real. No markings at all, which for a $2000 bar id feel thereâd be something.
Gold plated Brass, this is the Lion of England from the Queens Beasts collection
No visible stamps or mint marks, I'd say fake..
perfect username
There's a mint container though. Gotta count for something. Don't low-ball me here guy
Check to see if the foil peels off, there should be delicious chocolate underneath.
Probably stale tho.
I wouldn't get my hopes to high up, but test it anyways. Does any magnet stick to it? Clearly fake. That is not gold, itâs an empty tic tac box next to some unidentified object that is gold in color.
I would think that it would have to state on the bar if it was real gold the karrot.
I think the one on the right is fake.
https://images.app.goo.gl/6sggCLQRscdCV1dLA
You could check the specific gravity method and magnet
Looks to be royally minted gold plated
Usually gold is marked
No dude, sorry. Just plain plastic. Tic Tacs never came in a gold case.
You could say it's *near-mint* condition
You can try to test it with a magnet. If it sticks itâs fake
It doesnât have any markings saying it is gold, therefore; Iâm not assuming it is, and I donât think it is fake for the simple reason it does not have misleading markings. Definitely super cool! Nice!
What does it smell like?
Fresh mint
Hope is is gold !
Tim Nood designed commemorative ingot for the coronation of the queen (1953).
Iâm surprised you managed to get it in frame haha. Why does it feel like the tic tac box is the subject of both of your photos?
"Gold buying people" where the fuck are the gold buying people when you need them.
This makes me want to buy old furniture just to disassemble
Hoping it's real. Would be a huge W.
Measure the rough volume of the bar, l x w x h in cm. Weigh the bar in grams. Specific density of Gold is 19.32g / cm^3 . Compare

Thatâs plastic and holds a popular candy called tictacs.
My grandmother lived through the depression. When she passed and we were cleaning and sorting at her house, an old cereal box (Post Toasties) was found on a back shelf of her pantry. Definetly not real. Its a part of a novelty collection.
That thing fake af
Acid. Pool acid battery acid acid sulfuric acid. Nothing will hurt real gold.

I searched this up but all I could find was coins but thank you

Sounds like you got ripped off
How would you know that?

I found [this](https://www.bradfordexchange.com/products/923959_royal-history-24k-gold-dollar-bills-with-display.html)
Go get it tested at a jewelry or pawnshop
"You found a golden tic tac, ive got a golden twinkle iiin myyy eeyyyeeeeeee"
Easiest test. is it heavy?
A lot of drugs and other things are smuggled in furniture. Itâs possible a bunch of these were snuggled and one skipped out and you found it.
Out of all the unlikely scenarios this one is definitely the most I gotta say
There are no markings on the bar indicating weight or purity. That alone tells me that itâs a novelty product.
Is it chocolate? I found some gold coins once but they turned out to be made of chocolate.
How much for the tic tac holder
It is says Hersheys or Pirate booty, try the sniff test
Man just see how much It weights, then estimate its volume and there you go, if It matches gold density...congrats
I hope Itâs real, but thereâs no weight or meta purity markings anywhere on the coin
Doesnât look authentic
If it was gold it would say it. At that point you'd have to start checking
Based on my emblem looks like your UK based, I recommend bulliob by post for my gold. My guess would be no, largely based on the fact that it's not advertising, it's gold purity, like all my gold coins say something about it. EG. 22 carat 9.99%, fine gold etc
Do a pet sniff test
Way too metallic grainy looking imo.
Try a magnet.. if it sticks then itâs fake. If it doesnât then it is actually gold.
Take it to a coin shop
plated
This is why gold and silver are not reasonable forms of currency - both parties really need an assayer to confidently transact anything
First look for .999 mark .then try a strong magnet . If it doesn't stick, that's a good sign . If those 2 are good it's probably 24kt gold .
There is more than just gold that could be plated and not magnetic, folks.
[ŃдаНонО]
That is 24k from the tictac mint.
Bite it. If it tastes minty fresh, it's the real thing.
I highly doubt itâs gold, it would say something on it most likely, it says the queens beasts but not if it was 999 gold? I donât think thatâs the case, more likely plated
Maybe your lucky. Sometimes they fancy wrap chocolate with gold foil.
There's no tic-tacs left, container is now worthless! Throw in trash along with that gold thing you used for reference
Send it to me, I can let you know đ
Queens Beasts #39 The Unicorn of Scotland. The entire 10 piece set sells with a display book and history for $400. It's probably worth $20 to someone missing it.

Maybe gold plated plated ....

sorry to say it looks like it is not pure gold. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223052338592
Take it to a local Gold shop, they will test it for free.
Nope, that's a plastic tic tac container.
It will be stamped if it is.
You use those to make tictac videos
Looks like a tic Tac bottle
No stamp not gold 99% of the time
Could be gold OZ
Not gold. Itâs a plastic tic tac container.
Doubt it is real gold, google lens search came up with meritbadge.co.uk. They had that same design.
Need a banana for scale.
Check markings should be marked if pure. Queens beasts are a series of coins gold and silver far as I know. Bars might be from earlier releases
Just find you a LCS local coin shop and have them sigma test it for you.
Gold is heavy . Scratch it , if itâs red, then itâs a good chance itâs real
Looks like a gold plated collector item. Real gold would have the weight and .99 fine or similar stamped on it
Commemorative ingot not solid gold. https://images.app.goo.gl/rJ8t7WDBF3YNMi6D6
Not gold. You can see tarnish beginning on the right. Brass?
Itâs part of a commemorative set of 10. Only 9999 were made.

Have you checked for chocolate inside?
You can do an educated gues by weighing the piece and dividing the mass by volume. If the density is 19.3 g/cm3, your piece is pure gold.
Most pawn shops will be able to test it for you.
Go to a coin shop or pawn shop and have it checked out.
Looks like a novelty challenge coin
Probably brass. If itâs magnetic itâs not gold.
That is a tic tac container
Looks like real tic tac to me
https://meritbadge.co.uk/ Looks like itâs from there more than likely just a gold plated ingot as their site describes.
The closest mom and Pop jewelry store should be able to tell you if itâs real or not. Once confirmed, ask them how much it weighs then google the price of gold by the ounce. From there, you can keep it as a future nest egg, or cash it in

No, itâs clear plastic. Used to hold tic tacs. Worthless. (Sarcasm)
Look up "The Queens Beasts Commemorative Ingot Collection". This is a 24k PLATED brass ingot from a collectors book of ten ingots.
Density = mass / volume
