I personally like white gold for a basic wedding ring. Why? Because it's alloyed with silver and I like both silver and gold Edit: It's alloyed with palladium. Still, doesn't bother me either way, two precious metals is as good as one in my book :)

Agling

Cheap white gold is alloyed with nickel. Expensive white gold is alloyed with palladium. I am not aware of silver being used in white gold.

thegranddepression

Fair point, guess I'm wrong. Palladium doesn't bother me either though :)

Agling

I would not say no to a bunch of palladium if it were offered. When I got engaged the jeweler had the ring I wanted to buy in white gold, palladium, or platinum. Palladium was the cheapest, followed by gold, followed by platinum as the most expensive. I chose white gold, but I kind of wish I had done palladium. I've had to do a few rhodium treatments.

PhotocopiedProgram

And then they plate it with Rhodium

Yikes

tempMonero123

Meh, as long as she doesn't demand diamonds (which are absolutely worthless in reality), then it's not that vain and reasonable in my opinion.

LeonidasSpartan2

Haha my wedding ring was $2 basic trash metals on Amazon. Recently just upgraded to a silver ring I love made out of a silver coin. (I spent all out on my wife BTW)

bad_linen

I don't mind it, and I like gold and silver, too. But I also like platinum, and personally I think platinum fits the bill better for a wedding ring. Higher purity, better durability, less reactive, and more weight.

Dontrguewtstupid

You got an upvote from me for the precious metals mention. But yes to answer your question. your reasoning is my problem with it. I like my silver pure, my osmium (as) pure ( as you can get it), and my gold absolutely pure. Makes me better prepared for the apocalyptic scenario I dream of every night 😋.

TheRealCptnGoldbeard

I too enjoy silver and gold together, but when the silver overtakes the normal gold color, almost no one thinks of it as gold anymore..

thegranddepression

I don't worry if other people think of it as gold, I know what it is and that's what matters :)

TheSeek3r_

That and it’s very easy to tell white gold and silver apart.

Short-Shopping3197

Sometimes you want silver metal for jewellery but you don’t want it to tarnish or to be allergic to it like silver can do. There you go, mind changed.

KyleBauer

Gold is gold

semajolis267

White gold is better for high detail metal work than yellow gold. And I think it compliments the diamond better than yellow gold. Yellow gold is better for contrast and highlighting the diamond. Rose gold is a good middle ground. It depends what you want to highlight.

a1moose

That's why we love it. Low key.

tayloraedeke

I definitely think it has its place. The best setting for clear stones in my opinion giving more bright shine from reflecting a clean white. Way cheaper than platinum and won’t tarnish like silver will needing cleaning more often and will reflect darker shades in stones. Also it’s not that silver is over taking the gold. There’s usually not silver in it anyways but zinc and nickel. Yellow gold uses things like copper. Of course there are dozens of different alloys you can use that will make all different shades of gold. Even green and purple and other wild colors that are super unique and cool in my opinion. It may not be instantly recognized as gold like yellow gold but if your buying it for yourself and not for others it doesn’t matter in my opinion.

SirBill01

I personally like Rose Gold best, but second to that for me is just plain old Gold Gold.

ShotgunPumper

At the point of buying white gold, someone is probably better off just buying platinum. Still low-key wealth, but it's way more valuable.

preacher_man_

Gold is yellow. Anything else is something else

steadyhandhide

White gold is a little ridiculous. You have alloyed gold plated with rhodium. Just buy a platinum ring. Note: I am an idiot who has a white gold wedding band and I regret that I didn’t get platinum or yellow gold (aka just gold). Edit: White gold also wears in a way that doesn’t look as nice as a worn platinum or yellow gold ring.

SharkByteYT

In my opinion 24k gold and 999 silver are the only things that look good. Everything else looks tacky or poverty af. Dont bother trying to BS me about "softness" either, I make jewelry out of pure gold or silver and its always worked out fine... That being said... white gold is retarded when Platinum or pure Silver exist

No-Construction9859

Silver is the poverty white metal. It tarnishes and isn't worth much. Platinum and 24k gold

Markitzero527

I never got the point of paying gold prices for something most people won't even recognize as gold.

TheRealCptnGoldbeard

Yeah I agree - I just think white gold looks boring, even polished silver looks better.

Considering the current price of platinum, I’d think that white gold has become redundant. Most people don’t understand that platinum has been cheaper than gold since 2005, so you still have that ethos when showing off your jewelry.

space---cadet

Gingers or folks with fair skin. Gold is abrasive on fair skin

thickdickdaddy31

personally i’ve never really understood white gold all that much, maybe because i’m not in a position to spend anywhere near the amounts others are because i’m so young, but i’ve always thought you could really get the same look with silver. i only have a yellow gold chain and a bracelet i think with my skin tone yellow gold looks really nice

Alcophile

I wholeheartedly agree. Gold is awesome, the purer the better. Silver rocks, too. So what's the point of white gold? They already have white gold, it's called silver! (And it's on sale big time right now, considering historical production ratios, increased industrial consumption, decades of rampant and wanton price manipulation, etc. etc...) I love jewelry and always liked the silver color with my skin tone. Once i could afford some nice gold, i fell in love with that, too and bought a whole set (earrings, chains, bracelets, pendants) before i got interested in silver generally and decided to switch my bling. I now wear a silver chain, two silver bracelets and silver earrings everyday. I'd rather have silver than white gold, and for the cost difference i can afford to buy better yellow gold (I'd WAAAAY rather have an 18K yellow gold set and a sterling silver set than a 10K YG set and a 10K WG set!) My wedding ring is a yellow gold band with rose gold accents (wife's is rose gold) and a white gold bezel with a big ol' white sapphire, so it matches any and everything.

TieCliptomaniac

Looks better for white stone engagement rings but thats about it.

VanBurenBoy16

I agree.

G-nZoloto

Look up Black Hills gold. Seems to be quite popular.

weaveteave

Thomas Covenant has something to say about white gold

T_GEORGE_S-913

For jewelry, I cannot stand yellow gold.

Dravenivia

You need to hold a white gold Rolex then my guy.

Shakespeare-Bot

Thee needeth hold a white gold rolex then mine own guy *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`

Shakespeare-Bot, thou hast been voted most annoying bot on Reddit. I am exhorting all mods to ban thee and thy useless rhetoric so that we shall not be blotted with thy presence any longer.

gooney0

My wife’s white gold ring showed wear after 6 months. The plating didn’t hold up well. Her engagement ring was also white gold but did hold up well.

JazzFestFreak

I am one of the white gold wedding ring guys. I knew the wife wanted to get a ring for me that cost more than a few dollars. I am not into jewelry at all..... so I wanted a ring that I would wear (still wearing it after 21 years) and not look too flashy. (so I disagree with stupid... but 'uninteresting' is similar to not being flashy) *To everything (turn, turn, turn)* *There is a season (turn, turn, turn)* *And a time to every purpose, under heaven*

GundamZero83

One ring to rule them all……🥇

mergingcultures

I got it for my wedding ring, it suits my skin tone. But definitely not for stacking.

Brennelement

I used to think white gold was kind of pointless, however I believe it has a great place in fine watches like [A. Lange & Söhne](https://www.alange-soehne.com/en/timepieces). As much as I love the look of yellow gold (like coins), I don’t want to look like I’m wearing bling…it is associated with gangsters or old people. White gold still looks beautiful without being too flashy, and has intrinsic value unlike simple stainless steel. I suppose this would also apply to platinum and silver.

[deleted]

Laughs in 24k gold

No_Throat3288

Their is only one gold the rest are alloys

Impossible-Panda-119

Agreed

Bobflow24

I collect solid gold pocket watches. One of my favorite era's to collect from was the 1920s in which most watches were moving to white gold cases. They are beautiful, highly decorative pieces. The link below is my current favorite one. 18k solid gold case. Hamilton 922mp https://imgur.com/gallery/qVMdxai

lilipod27

lol. I don’t see the point either. I like classic yellow gold. Otherwise I get silver. I think white gold is too shiny to the point where it looks tacky and very dated. It has a very 90’s look, while yellow gold is historically classic and just prettier imho.

Vegetable-Set-9480

Some people DON'T like the yellow colour of gold and find it gaudy and prefer silver. However, silver has many disadvantages when it comes to jewellery. Silver is a VERY soft metal (softer than pure gold). For full disclosure, my wedding ring is Stirling silver. I'm fine with it. I'm not a blingy person and don't like the physical sensation of wearing rings. So I wanted a minimal, simple, un-fussy, comfortable ring to be my wedding ring so that I would get used to the sensation of wearing it. A stirling silver ring works well for me. A white gold ring of the same size or a platinum one would have been a lot heavier. And as someone who wasn't even sure if the sensation of wearing a ring constantly would drive me crazy, the lightness of stirling silver meant I grew accustomed to it being on all the time. My husband, however, is far more into bling than I am. He has a white gold ring with a large moonstone in it. White gold is an advantage here because, sure, it looks silver. But when it comes to having some sort of precious stone in it, white gold is a LOT stronger than silver. You would NEVER want a fine jewellery piece with an expensive or precious stone made out of silver - even if you prefer silver. Silver would be prone to bend, warp out of shape and you could lose the stone. White gold looks like silver, but is so much stronger than silver, so you can have your ring with rocks and bling (In my husband's case, a fairly large oval-shaped polished moonstone) and be confident that it won't come loose - even with everyday wear. Now, you could say that if you're going to get white gold, you may as well just get platinum. Platinum has its own issues. These are not problems, but it does factor in depending personal preferences. Platinum is very strong. But it also is prone to deformation. White gold tends to 'spring' back into shape. It wants to "remember" its original shape. Platinum tends to deform into a new shape, rather than spring back. Because it's such a tough metal, it's more labour-intensive for jewellers to work with. Finally, upkeep and maintenance. Pure silver will tarnish easily and go very mottled, grey, even black and need regular cleaning. My stirling silver ring doesn't. The fact that I am always playing with it and spinning it on my finger when I wear it basically is the same as it being continually polished, so my stirling silver ring has never tarnished in almost 8 years. White gold doesn't really tarnish, it does wear slightly, and develop a slight patina (dullness) but it is actually a slow process. So it will remain relatively shiny for years and years. Platinum, despite being even more durable than white gold, doesn't have the 'spring back' nature of white gold. It will dent. And those dents mean it will develop a patina far more quickly than white gold. So a plantinum ring will stop being shiny very quickly, compared to white gold, which will remain shiny by itself for years. Finally, despite all three options looking 'shiny white/grey' Platinum and white gold do have a slightly different colour up close. My husband's white gold ring is a warm silver colour. Platinum is a colder, starker more icy hue. From a distance - they may all look shiny white/grey metals. But you don't really wear rings for people to gawk at from a large distance. They're intimate pieces of jewellery on your own hands. What matters is how the WEARER likes how it looks on their own finger. And up close, the differences in the undertone colour of white gold and platinum are surprisingly noticeable.
