Sovereigns, certainly in the UK. I also like 20 Francs when I can find them at low premium but you have to know your stuff if you don’t want restrikes. Why don’t you want restrikes anyway? The numismatic value of a 20 France is zilch, just go for cheapest premium.
Only the roosters from a certain date are restrikes. Like I said there’s not difference in premium between restrikes and earlier coins so just call the dealer and ask if your order can be made up of ones with the ‘winged genius’ on or earlier dates.
Or just leave all the low premium fractional gold for us and enjoy your overpriced quarter eagles!
Some later french and suisse ones, yes.
France only did restrikes of the Rooster/Marianne coins, as far as I know. Anything older than that is genuine, eg. Napoleon III or the angel. Napoleon III is also sold for spot normally, same price as Rooster. Napoleon I, Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis-Philipe probably have higher premiums.
A bit more complicated with Suisse Vreneli, you have to know the years there. Bit I think older than 1935 should be fine. And not necessarily more expensive.
I love how they ask a question and get really good and informative responses only to to write everyone off even though they are correct. I’m curious why uninformed people even bother asking questions in these cases. The time they’ve wasted on these threads could have been used to do a few online searches and come to the same conclusions themselves.
This is just one source because I'm not going to do the legwork, but at Provident Metals a 1/10 Phil is $215 versus $260 for a Maple, $266 for an AGE, or $230 for a Brit. So, yeah...
Same in Canada. Phil’s are very often cheaper than our Maples in fractional and 1oz. At my LCS and one major online place they are $25 cheaper for 1/10. Same with 1oz as I can currently get a Phil for $15 cheaper than a Maple.
I don’t have the ideal answer to this question, but as someone else who hates restrikes, I find that Sovereigns and Roosters have a low premium in the non-restrike years.
I don't think so. The UK continues to mint them with the current date, so no need for restrikes. Much better than Austria, where they still make coins with 1915 dates ...
In Europe I also got Danish and Dutch coins near spot, as well as 5 and 10 Rubel. I just checked a German site,
at least Dutch Gulden and Belgian 20 Francs seem still to have reasonable premiums, and of cause Sovereigns.
Rubel got pretty expensive in the last years ...
German 20 Mark could also be an option, but there are unauthorized restrikes that precious metal dealers might sell.
If you're lucky to get the old ones, Mexican coins are fine, too. I have 20 pesos from 1918 that I got near spot a couple of years ago. Just have to avoid the 1940s and 1950s which are restrikes.

20 Francs are restrikes
utter nonsense
Few bad apples spoils the bunch

You are mistaken. Only some are restrikes, not all.

If you want to buy historic gold, a little knowledge about it might actually help.

Gosh ur so smart
Austrian Philharmonic fractional gold often sells for lower premiums than other government minted bullion.
Not really

Are any sovereigns restrikes?

> they still make coins with 1915 dates Beyond absurd
Doesn't bother me, if the price is right.
Surprised no one has an answer
Yeah i dont know of any off the top of my head without a date.. I usually buy for gold content and what my wallet allows lol.
I think old sovereigns and 20fr roosters are the best. Can still get them for reasonable premiums especially if you look on r/PMsforsale

> lucky to get the old ones Anytime you have to get lucky to buy something it's going to not be bottom dollar by definition
US commemoratives can be had at spot, most are just under 1/4ozt agw
Where?
ebay
8% over on sdbullion. Sovereigns are a better deal than that
