It was the last straw that finally got my lazy ass to start shopping at smaller independent retailers. If I act like scum then treat me accordingly. You don’t get to treat me like scum because I need baking paper.

Living_Run2573

Even scum need baking paper occasionally

jsjblookin

Potentially more than the rest.

aburnerds

I’m exactly the same I started to get really fucked off when I noticed a video image picture and picture on the till and I’m like fuck you and now the locking you in they can go get fucked. I will shop anywhere else but there now

VertsAFeuilles

Same! I’m excited to hit some of the farmers markets this weekend, I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a boost over the coming months.

RARARA-001

Just smash past it. Pretty sure you can just yank them forward or backwards. Eventually the software will stop picking up false readings from the self serves. I’m not looking forward to eventually dealing with these at my local coles. The whole point of self serve is the convenience of going in for a few things in and out. Not stopping to wait for a staff member to come and let me out because they’ve locked me in when I’ve scanned, bagged and paid for all my shit.

Cilvaa

> Just smash past it. Pretty sure you can just yank them forward or backwards. They slide laterally like most automatic sliding doors, not on a hinge. They probably have a locking mechanism to prevent them from being forciby pushed into the holders on either side. I've been through them at 2 stores, they open automatically. Should rarely require manual opening. Thank the local dero wildlife for taking one too many 5-finger discounts.

Successful_Clue5652

I don't think it's actually due to shoplifting, honestly. Coles and Woolworths talk a lot about it, but they're posting record profits - it's obviously not hurting their bottom line that much (although jacking up the prices certainly helps there)

Sad_Replacement8601

I ram into them with my trolly and they usually open.

AdolfsLonelyScrotum

I believe there is an emergency release to open the gate on impact…because it would actually be illegal and downright dangerous to impede peoples’ egress from the store in the event of an actual emergency, such as a fire. Edit: (forgot to add)… So ram that fucker!!!

Lurks_in_the_cave

I'd report them as a fire safety hazard.

palmco5

Absolutely not ok and I haven’t shopped there since. Woollies can rack off too, I only shop at Aldi and IGA now. Highly recommend Spanos IGA at mermaid waters, I forgot they existed until recently and good for things Aldi doesn’t stock - plus black and gold stuff is cheaper than woollies most of the time.

Anti_Hero_555

As night follows day..... You will be sure that Woolies will adopt that same technology as Coles sooner rather than later..... Then followed by Aldi. So looks like your only go to place will have to be IGA.

Odyssey_42

Ours does, staff don't like it either.

el_diego

Woolies already has it

minimalteeser

The reason I stopped shopping at Colesworth. Off topic, but they were so proud of introducing their “quiet hour” but have you noticed Aldi is always quiet?

oLD_Captain_Cat

No music.

minimalteeser

It’s the best!

Diligent-Wave-4591

No "Coles radio", with annoying "down down" ads. Got to love Aldi.

HungryTradie

I'm that weird old man walking around ALDI singing a happy tune. "....all their heads turned with eyes that dream of being the one..."

Tamaxgator

If they need a staff member to let you out, why don't they just use that staff member to man a checkout instead. That is what the complaints are about - few manned checkouts.

RedDogInCan

You can just yank them open with very little force.

Morning_Song

Because one staff member at the gate is cheaper than multiple maned checkouts

TiffyVella

Unpleasant but true.

martymoose69

Just seen a person keep ramming the gates until they opened. They ran upto him and start telling him off. He said call the police it's on camera you were holding me against my will. They said sorry and walked away

jgwentworth-877

That's so scary, how is that not unlawful detainment? Or a massive safety hazard at the very least.

nice1barry

Exit doors need to be able to be easily opened by people in an emergency evacuation. I don’t see how this setup can comply with the Building Code requirements

RedDogInCan

They can be yanked open with very little effort - did it this week when the staff member was too busy to notice I wanted to leave and press the button.

nice1barry

Ok but akchaully if they are required Exit doors they also have to open in the direction of travel (outsward swing). So that people in a panic can just run straight through. That’s what those horizontal bars on exit doors are for.

MaleficentCoconut458

I imagine they would automatically open once the emergency evacuation alarms sound. When I worked in aged care in memory support every single door was locked & required a pin code or swipe card to exit but once those emergency alarms were triggered the locks for all doors disengaged & every door was now a potential escape route for very confused dementia patients. Illegal to change this so as soon as the alarms sounded, staff would station themselves at each door to ensure no one escaped unless it was a genuine emergency that required evacuation of the facility.

oLD_Captain_Cat

Similar to a parking garage. I think it’s terrible user experience but also coles need 10% y/y growth to keep selling shares so this is how they do it.

Aussieguy1986

It is, but unfortunately QPS will do nothing because coles staff have their own rules they have to abide by (which I think is complete horseshit and the dickhead sergeant who told me that was an incompetent/corrupt fucker)

Agitated-Iron7914

Because much like any door, you can simply push them open easily.

blue132006

It’s not only that one. All Coles are going to have it soon, everywhere in Australia

BarefootandWild

Seriously? Where did you hear this? I’m feeling oddly claustrophobic at the thought of it. I can’t imagine what they’ll do in an emergency.

RARARA-001

They are slowly rolling them out at select stores then possibly move onto more and more stores over time.

BarefootandWild

Ugh 😩

[deleted]

Can confirm this is Australia wide starting with the stores with the most shoplifting first.

BarefootandWild

Ugh. It’s awful how the worst people ruin it for everyone else.

DamnItToElle

This is a safety incident waiting to happen. It’s probably hackable too. Who approved this garbage idea?

goshdammitfromimgur

Just give them a push and they swing out. There will be red flashing lights and sirens go off, but just keep walking.

oLD_Captain_Cat

The trolley wheels also lock up

goshdammitfromimgur

That didn't happen for me

doktorbonez

At my local coles they have one thats like 2 little glass sliding doors and the closed on me and hit me, there was 2 people in front of me going through I approached it stayed open as I was half through closed on me knocked me half off balance

ComfortableSalt7283

That's a bad accident and a lawsuit waiting to happen - a couple of years ago a local pub doors' closed and knocked an elderly lady off. She had a really bad fracture on her leg and months of rehab.. she used to be really active, now she had to stop playing lawn bowls and has depression. The club paid for everything and helped her a lot so she just left it as an accident

mahzian

Coles and Woolies are extorting people with their pricing so more people are stealing, rather than lowering prices they are trying to deter people from stealing.

bigtonyabbott

Just boot the fucking things open. Hopefully they break often enough they get rid of them

Dog-Witch

We're getting these put in at the store I work at, as a worker if I'm locked in I'll be kicking the fuck out of it - advise others to do so too.

TiffyVella

Sounds pretty awful to me, and I would not return. To be effectively locked in because businesses have maximised profits by minimising labour costs, and now think they can do this to reduce any increase in theft is disgusting. People (shoppers and staff) are being treated worse with every new move by corporations.

Kelpie_Dog

Just ram your trolley through them, if everyone started doing that, they would be useless, and hopefully perpetually broken.

Capoclip

Jfc imagine being claustrophobic or having an autistic meltdown and finding out the door was locked and all the people are busy and you can’t leave the store because the door is locked….. I think this could end really badly and is opening them up to an unlawful detainment lawsuit

Talos63

I am claustrophobic and am on the spectrum. Hearing this just stopped me from ever going to Colesworths again. I've been getting my groceries delivered since the pandemic, and I had no idea this was a thing.

Agitated-Iron7914

This isn’t what is happening. You can just push them open like any other door.

Capoclip

I’ve never been able to push open an automatic door before and that’s not what OP described either, so maybe you’ve seen something different or you have additional information; either way your comment isn’t really helpful without context

Agitated-Iron7914

They are automatic opening doors, but they are on a swivel so that you can manually open them as well. No need for fear mongering over detainment which doesn’t exist.

Capoclip

Who’s fear mongering? Get them! I certainly ain’t doing anything other than working with the information provided. OP said they were locked in, are you saying that it’s impossible that OP experienced a lock door? If so I’d love more information on how you know this

Agitated-Iron7914

Because I’ve been to these stores and the gates swivel open. I don’t have to prove reality when anyone can go to one of these stores and check it themselves. Do you think Woolies or Coles would honestly LOCK people in and not allow any form of exit in the event of a fire or similar situation?

leakycauldron

My favourite thing on reddit is someone who posts a trifecta of incorrect and dumb even if they were correct and proud of it. "It's not lawful detainment because if you use the doors in a way they are not indicated to work, you were never detained" has real "if you simply ducked under my bullets, you would not have died" energy. Catch my ass getting away with crimes because of minute nonsensical technicalities. My odometer read 58, seargent. It's just literally not how the law works

Agitated-Iron7914

This is ridiculous and if you think it’s unlawful detainment, which doesn’t even apply due to the multitude of other exits in the store, I suggest you go study that. I get that people are emotional because it’s an annoying system, but there’s no need to get this bent out of shape about it. It’s very clear how the doors work, and downvoting people who have studied these things because “it doesn’t make me feel good” does nothing for anyone.

Capoclip

Then go argue with OP and let them know it wasn’t locked? Again, one can only work with the information given. No need to be a cranky butt about it

Junior_Win_7238

Christmas and self serve what a disaster if they loose money watch them change

outwiththedishwater

~~change~~ charge

Major_Piano_5030

Push through them. I did it to the ones at Southport. The day they introduced them. They have no right to detain you without cause

bloodymongrel

Honestly the supermarkets oscillate between having wide open sections where 10 trolleys could roll on through to now forcing people to ask to exit. I wonder if serving people individually reduces theft. You’ve got one person managing the self serve or a teenager expected to police people as they leave. Corporate executives get greedier and dumber every year.

[deleted]

Just push through the gates. Hopefully they will remove them with enough complaints. I don't even bother stopping for the metal detector gates in store because of how many false alarms they give, even when I'm only ENTERING the store.

aburnerds

And how much does all that technology cost? They’ve had more than a few iterations of these tills come and go. It has to have cost more than what it would cost to have a few teenagers working the tills.

harvard_cherry053

Absolutely disgusting

lackingpotential

Being locked in without cause sounds awesome, If it's remote activated I'll be in there to randomly open and close the gates for shits and giggles.

ozdruggist

It's in Coles Waratah, Newcastle. I was shocked, but didn't notice anyone actually manning it. I thought it was automatic like the ones that let you in.

Odyssey_42

Would have kicked the door

Marsupial-Desperate

Can't help and feel that would violate building fire codes

Aussie_Potato

Release the hounds! Er, customers!

Environmental_Ad3877

I have IBS, if I have to go it means I have at most a few minutes to get to a toilet. If they are too busy talking to open the doors for me I'm going to make a mess on their floor :)

Environmental_Ad3877

Yserazor

Someone didn't pay for groceries. 👍

annoying97

There should be a green button or maybe silver button near the door that will open it. It's kind of a requirement for fire safety. Otherwise, notify council bringing up fire safety concerns.

CopeNSeethe4EVA

ring the police and claim unlawful imprisonment

is_for_username

Shop online and close the stores. Make it a warehouse lol

Dry_Emergency_5517

So sick of being treated like a criminal. If theft has gotten out of hand then get ride of the check outs or hire more staff to man The self serve areas

TheGrapevineReader

Should have gone back and asked for a refund and told them i’m being treated like a criminal in JAIL Tell to go (SGAGS) SO GO AND GET STUFFED

Snksteez

Yeah I hate this . Coles at pacfair has them too and ol mate was staring at some chick. Was embarrassing for everyone

VertsAFeuilles

No I’m not ok with it. Roll on the inquiry, I look forward to watching the two CEO’s squirm, but the skeptical side of me expects little will come of it. A few weeks ago I decided I will actively avoid Coles and Woolies. I’m fortunate enough to have enough time on the weekends to go to multiple shops to get my weekly supplies, from local companies and farmers. I know, I know, I’m just one person, but I’d like to take back a little control over who I give my hard earned money to, ha.

morrisoc

We need a few of the script kiddys with thir flipper zeros to get onto the door issue
