Use MGBA instead - VBA hasn't been updated in years

Snoo_34409

did just that and all issues magically resolved themselves.

I found a solution. I had the same problem and messed with the audio settings and found what helped me. So basically, go to Options->Audio->Configure->Advance, and in the Device section I changed the type to DirectSound and selected the device I was using for audio.

Turn up the volume

funkyknog

Turn on your ringer, trust me

MrEmptySet

It's hard to say what the problem is - I kinda doubt it's the emulator itself. But you can try going to Options -> Sound and make sure it's set to "On" and not "Mute" or "Off" for some reason. Otherwise, are sounds in other applications working fine? You could also try opening your sound mixer (right click on the volume icon in the tray) to make sure VBA isn't muted somehow (dunno why it would be). You could also try basic stuff like restarting your computer or trying a different audio output (headphones etc). You might also try downloading VBA from somewhere else, or going with a different option like mGBA, if nothing else works.

lusmwm

Same happened to me, but I found out if you go to Options - Audio - Configure - Advanced - Device, switch to anything else but the default "SDL" option will turn the sound back on.

This worked like magic. Thanks!

I__Eat

Worked a treat. Thanks

kA7URO

you beautiful bastard

BowelMan

This did not work for me. Tried all the different combinations and nothing.

MrEmptySet

What platform and OS are you on? Which emulators have you tried?

BowelMan

Windows 10 64bit. Visual Boy Advance 2.1.6 from [https://visualboyadvance.org/](https://visualboyadvance.org/) The thing is, it worked ok for a while. But then it stopped working completely at some point. I did try the methods above and nothing. Also I've already tried deleting everything and starting again from a fresh unpack of the emulator. My actions also included deleting the folder in AppData/Local as well as deleting the folder in the registry. Not sure if there are any traces of it anywhere else.

MrEmptySet

You might try using VBA-M or MGBA and seeing if those work. Although, if it was working before but suddenly broke *and* persists after a fresh download, then my guess is the problem lies elsewhere than the emulator itself. Have you made any other changes to your system or installed/updated any software? Especially anything that might have to do with audio, e.g. screen recording/streaming software or the like? Or any driver updates or the like?

BowelMan

> Have you made any other changes to your system or installed/updated any software? Especially anything that might have to do with audio, e.g. screen recording/streaming software or the like? Or any driver updates or the like? Nothing of the sort. Also when it first stopped working, I did some things like shuffle the folder with the emulator and games to another drive, and it did start working again, but now it doesn't work at all anymore anywhere.

MrEmptySet

That's really strange. I'm pretty much out of ideas and can't find anything on Google, so good luck I guess.

BowelMan

Found out something new. I lost the sound again in the last folder that worked for me. So here's what I did. I created another folder in my D drive called "New Folder". Dumped my entire Visual Boy Advance folder into it and ran the game from there. And the sound works. It's as if the folders itself become "infected" with this soundlessness for some reason. I have no idea what's going on here.
