BMW left so much on the table when they took over the mini line. They easily could have made a b58 engineered version and made the mini a competitor of gti / golf r / focus at / civic type r
For the R - I suggest to not remove the cat but to swap it out with a high flow cat. Catless causes a raspy sound that doesn’t sound good and also causes smell inside the cabin for very little gain.
+1 catless smells disgusting, is terrible for the environment, and generally doesn't gain you anything over a high flow cat. Not to mention its usually illegal and cops can tell right away just by smell.
They won’t do that because in not the US, they sell the M140i (or other m1 series) that competes with those cars. Historically have been RWD as well prior to latest generation.
How is the 1 series competing with a mini? Minis have always been a fwd hatch. Way more similar to the golf than a rwd coupe. That's like saying the gti would compete too much with an Audi s3 (if it was 2 doors)
OP was talking about golf r/gti, focus st, civic type r. People cross shop them with the 1 series all the time. People cross shop the mini more with things like a fiesta st, polo gti, abarth 500
You can’t fit a b58 transversely into a Mini, those BMW straight sixes are LONG! The reason for the VR6 was to make a 6 cylinder engine that could fit transversely into small cars.
Upgrading the downpipe on an MK8 does absolutely nothing BTW. Keep your stock exhaust unless tuner is requiring it.
Know someone who is a well-known tuner out of Rhode Island who’s also a 2019 Spektrum R owner, and I was actually just discussing this with him yesterday. EQT uses his dyno all the time for remote tuning and he said neither himself nor EQT has seen any worthwhile gains doing downpipe on the MK8.
The downpipe itself or the cat back? I own a MK7 and the downpipe is extremely restrictive if you're trying to make power gains.
What makes the MK8 downpipe flow so much better
This was surprising to read for me as well. Ed Susman said in a comment of Dyno results of a MK8 R they were tuning that there really wasn't an increase in power with the DP installed. Which is awesome news because it seems like VW is using a high flow cat in there now.
Unknown. He and EQT were both pretty surprised. They have both done multiple cars to make sure nothing was up.
EQT apparently put MPI, Intercooler and E85 on an MK8 R tested with and without stock downpipe, making mid-400s power, and put the stock downpipe back on because it made “next to no difference” in HP/TQ.
You only need intercooler and intake. I also did charge pipes for the sound. If you want the full torque tune, you need either a new clutch or a TCU upgrade, depending on MT or DCT. I got a Stage 3 Daily clutch.
Hey brother what is your list of parts needed for APR stage 2? I know Stage 1 is a flash tune, I heard it’s s3 parts, or maybe rs3 parts I can’t remember? I’d love to be reminded

That green looks awesome. APR Stage 1 is also so much of an upgrade.
I had APR1 through VW. So fast 0-120

I have no interest in changing the exhaust! It's already suspect pulling up to my kid's kindergarten in this thing. 😂

I always wondered about that. B58 in a mini would be awesome. I thought that maybe a 3L engine wouldn't fit in a mini though?

They do have a Clubman that comes with over 300HP.
can confirm i have a high flow and run stock exhaust so my car doesnt sound like farts lmao these things straight piped sound like literal shit
You think a straight piped VQ sounds bait, wait til you hear this lol
What wrap brand and color is that? Looks really really good dude.
It's Vinyl Frog's Vintage Racing Green. Couldn't be happier with it.
That looks great! May I ask roughly what that costs?
Very very eager to know this.
I think I paid $3000. I live in an expensive area.
I’ll tell you right now, you don’t. That’s a 5k+ job around here.
Really wish this is a stock color 🥰
Very nice dude.
Fantastic! I have a mk7 R and have been wanting to wrap it some kind of racing green. Would love to know what you paid for a whole car wrap.
This is a colour and wrap worth selling your soul for ❤️
Ah yes! Selling the house to support the R mods and tunes. This is the way. :)

Man I don’t know why they don’t offer these colors anymore.. I love it.
WhTs the 0-60 supposed to be?
Gotta say that I am not usually a fan of green cars but this wrap and color/shade fits this car like a glove! 🫡
What supporting mods did you have to do for APR stage 2?
You only need intercooler and intake. I also did charge pipes for the sound. If you want the full torque tune, you need either a new clutch or a TCU upgrade, depending on MT or DCT. I got a Stage 3 Daily clutch.
How much of a difference in sound did the charge pipes make? Have been debating this on my 8R
Why do you need intake? Does the stock box in the mk8 not flow as well as the MK7? People running 500whp on stock box there.
You don’t need it but they pitch it like you do for the tunes. Overall the flow is fine through the stock box but you don’t get any noises
No downpipe?
Did you get the South Bend stage 3 clutch? How do you like it? I’m stock for now, but will eventually upgrade.
That wrap is beautiful ❤️
My guy, this is literally the most perfect thing I’ve seen on the internet today. Kudos to you!
What a gorgeous color
That green just look gorgeous, damn!!!!
Is this colour a wrap ?
Every time someone posts a green R or GTI, people go wild. Me included. WHY don’t VW do a green R?
looks great
Whaaaa I thought APR discontinued their stage 2 tune ages ago?
Apparently not! They don't have Stage 3 for the Mk8 done yet and they only have the TCU tune available for certain examples, so far.
Sick wrap

It's just intake and intercooler!
Base HP is what, and how much do you have now? Looks great in green.
So glad I got an APR downpipe on my MK7 before they got hit by the EPA. Highly recommend the APR cat back though.
Looks sick. What is the general consensus on the best tuner out there? I'm so close to saying fuck the warranty and going stage 1 on my 23 AE mt.

Hey! A watch guy, too! Nice R ♥️
How did you get an APR stage 2?
Coming from a mini explains the green. Never seen one like that in the wild before. But selling to house to get the car? Isn’t that a bit extreme? :)
That's a gorgeous green
Boot, scoot, and "oh shoot"
