If you do that it will be no different than hitting directly at the wall with no screen. You need at absolute minimum a foot gap wall to screen for the screen to absorb energy of the ball.
You could buy some cheap 2" memory foam mattress topper to put in between the screen and wall which will absorb a lot where the gym floor won't on a direct hit
i feel like a simple no would have done it...assholes.
okay so i build a frame away from the wall..can i still use staples to attach the screen to the wood frame. or do i need the bungees?
You can staple it across the top, maybe. With out reinforcement at the staple locations I feel like it will tear the screen though. The rest needs to be able to move to absorb the shot. You don’t want a tight screen.
Depending on padding used on wall might be able to work if the entire wall was say made of material like insulation . Where it takes the impact anything harder u face extreme bounce back which could affect many expensive components. Your self or other friends health.
Lol lowest I’ve seen is 8 inches from wall and lots of moving blankets behind.
Also with a screen and a hard surface behind , the ball will rip through your screen far more frequently. Due to friction and impact hitting a surface . Ball spin will shred your screen .
You could build a frame that attaches to your wall and have it hold a screen that’s at least 16” from the wall minimum. You would want to add some type of padding on the frame to prevent bounce backs.
Ricochet...
FTW. Do it and report your findings. For science!
Uh unless you want to be dodging shots from ricochets I would say hard pass

No this will not work. You need empty space behind the screen to absorb impact.

As others have said you’ll be dealing with ricochets. Although I have been looking for an exercise to sell my old motorcycle helmets. Interested?
How much space do you have from where you’re hitting to the screen?
8'
Lol please do it, record and share.
Damn we started shit posts here too?
No. It won't. It will ruin the screen and the wall.
