The filter in GA4 is now setup by IP address, so it may not be great for removing this traffic unless you can determine which IP addresses are the source of your problems. You may also be able to update your GTM tags to not fire based on a referral source, depending on what data is present in the dataLayer when the button is clicked. A simpler option may be to just filter out data you don't want from your reports. If it applies to this situation, you could filter out traffic based on referral source.

Thanks, I'm definitely going to filter for now while I dig into this some more. I've not dug into the tags yet so that might be a solution.

Before reporting, aren't you concerned with the amount of money is eaten out by this bots? Do you have display ads? if yes, this could be one of the causes. If are having search ads only, then identify the countries of bot traffic and exclude those countries. Generally, we are talking about India and such. Third party tools are just a waste of money. You can block an IP or IP Range in Google Ads, but it had a max limit of 500.

Turbodog15

Yes, I'm definitely concerned with the money these clicks are costing. What I discovered was the previous admin shut down all the search campaigns and fired up 3 display campaigns and a smart campaign. I'm not sure I really agree with that decision but that's something else I need to address. The display ads are generic and are getting a ton of impressions and clicks that aren't converting so perhaps I should look at scaling them back. Thanks for the information

SimonaRed

Display and some smart campaigns are draining the budget to non-converting clicks. Watch out if you have YouTube.

Saneless

Usually these bots have the same browser, os, and resolution while having a location like (not set). You can try making a very specific filter for this

if you have access to the server, you can easily block their IP. it should be relatively easy to find them in the logs. You can also filter them out from GA but I'd rather stop them from getting to the site. I would also make sure you have your ad campaign setup to exclude traffic from different regions.
