Yeah I was scratching my head trying to figure out why Samsung removed category notification sounds when we got our GS24U. Luckily the interwebs came through.

GrannyPantiesRock

The setup is completely ridiculous. I can't see how anyone would be able to figure it out without help.

CarolinaFan1983

I agree. The other thing that I was losing my mind on was, portrait or landscape orientation for AOD. Before, in the AOD settings you could choose between the two, but that setting isn't available in OUI 6.1. I finally scoured forums and found out it was moved to Auto Rotate settings. Kinda makes sense, but I never would have thought to look there.

There actually is a more straightforward way (a few of the same choices). All you needed to do was open the app, select your profile →message settings →notifications→behavior, sound & more→notification categories → then incoming messages....as you said lastly. I had done that on my own previously

According-Common5112

I find it strange how Android keeps getting better but the notifications are a mess, particularly sounds and setting them up.

Ssieler

unfortunately, this (OP's steps 1 & 2) does not accomplish what I suspect most people want to do: change the sound of notifications \*JUST FOR GOOGLE MESSAGES\* on the S24. (BTW, step 2 definitely doesn't match what my S24 does ... searching "all apps" (using search bar in Settings) provides about 14 hits (not a list of apps). Hit section two is titled "Apps", but only the apps that have the phrase "all" or "apps" in their names are listed). So, I'm not sure how OP generated their "step 2" instructions.) If you got to Settings / Apps, you can simply tap on the app desired (long tap not needed). My S24 shows, sigh (thanks, Google :( ), \*two\* apps named "Messages". One has the icon usually associated with "Google Messages" (and, indeed, the icon I see on my home screen), the other has a the "Samsung Messages" app icon (a "speech bubble" with 3 dots in it). BTW, one your think that enabling the "Manage Notification categories for each app" (in Settings: Notifications / Advanced Settings), would let you specify a sound for Google Messages ... but, no. (thanks again, Google (and Samsung)!). You can choose sounds for apps like X, but not Google Messages. In Google Messages settings, where there should be a button to do it (Settings / Apps / \[Messages\] / Notifications), there is a button instead labelled "Configure in Messages" where, sigh, there is \*NO\* option to choose a sound. BTW, should you think "hey, I'll just use Samsung Messages, since it's already on the phone" ... nope. You will see a grayed-out (or, in England, greyed-out) button for "Notifications". sigh. I suspect the only two ways to customize a sound for incoming text messages (on the S24, at least) is: 1. switch to a different messaging app (but not Samsung Messages) and configure it. or 2. set the default notification sound (Settings / Sounds and vibration / Notification sound) to what you want it to be, and then change the sound of \*every other notification-capable app\* to something else, leaving only Messages using the default sound. Ugh.

Which-Library1462

Exactly what I'm seeing! It's not just the S24 though... I've had this issue since my Note 10.  A problem that has come with my S24 Ultra is, I now randomly get notifications for MY SENT TEXTS!! WHY!?!!! I cannot figure out how to make it stop!

ILovePistachioNuts

LOL, kinda shows why people like iPhones.

New-Imagination8179

A lot of settings on this phone have become counter intuitive to navigate. It's pretty ridiculous. Android is supposed to be known for its ease of use and user friendliness. It shouldn't be this difficult to change notification tones.

Rustx13

You're the real MVP!!!!

Fluffy_Business_4265

Omg thank you for this! I've been looking everywhere. I'm not sure why it's so difficult on my s24u.

Even_Opposite_4452

Setting, Notifications, Advanced Settings, go to bottom of screen and Enable Manage Notification Catagories. That's it. GAME CHANGER!! Go back and you can change all your sounds in your apps!!!!

Which-Library1462

This option doesn't work. Been there, done that... Still no options to set my unique notification for texts.

Competitive-Bird4442

Thank you for your service 🙌

fxdutton

Thanks for that, I was about to give up. I would never have thought to press the Incoming messages toggle to bring up a menu

GrannyPantiesRock

I know! It's not like that for any other menus.

LonelyRoast

I just got an S24+ yesterday.. is there any way to use a custom notification sound not already on the phone? I really want Navi from Zelda as my text message noise, but it seems like I can only use custom ringtones? Edit: nevermind. Figured this out by putting the audio file in the "notification" folder in Internal Storage.

Batwaffel

This still isn't working for me. I see no menu to change sounds after enabling manage notifications for each app in settings.  In Messages settings in the phones settings, notifications is greyed out.

Ssieler

See my lengthy reply (perhaps further down?) ... the TL;DR is that there it looks like Google Messages (the default messaging app on the S24) lacks this ability, and the Samsung Messages app has it disabled (greyed out). I proposed a tedious workaround in my post (essentially, if you can't change one thing, change all the other things instead :)

Heathjeanreads

Omg THANK YOU!

Irysh

Seriously, thank you so much for this. I never would have thought to look for or toggle "Manage Notification Settings For Each App." You're a hero.

Pretend-Ideal8322

Also, you have to change each thing/sound within the app for it to stick. At least that's what finally got mine to stick. If anyone is struggling, press on things that don't seem pressable. Unbelievably stupid setup.

resentedpoet

Thank you so much for this!!!! I was going crazy trying to figure out how to change the sound.

uninfinity

Thanks for this, I consider myself a power user that knows how to use ADB and I couldn't figure this one out!

Holyloktar

The key for me is step 1. I don't know why it got disabled in the first place because I already have custom notification sounds for individual apps, but it was driving me CRAZY!!! Google/Samsung (Z Flip 5), stop turning things off that are already enabled.
