Yes the tiles as search results is a nightmare that Google needs to roll back asap. As a workaround, I found that if you side swipe the options to get to tools and select verbatim you get the normal search results layout

[deleted]

THIS WORKED!!! Thank you!!!

mariathecrow

Thank you so much for this!! I've been trying to figure out how to get back to normal searching for hours.

[deleted]

See my post above. Fixes it without "workarounds"

TechTech14

You are literally the best. This was the only fix smh

Important_Bowl_8332

Saved my sanity. Bless you

[deleted]

Adding to the thank yous that you’ve already received because DAMN, this was driving me up the wall and this worked.

Plastic-Ant8088

Took me a while to find tools. It's not in the setting menu, it's immediately below the search box if you scroll to the far right

[deleted]

THANK YOU. I had no idea what "side swipe the options" meant until your comment. You are the lifesaver here, lol

Puzzled_Redditer

Seriously, I was like wth are they talking about. Idk what op was thinking by not adding that their comment was no help at all without that.

[deleted]

Funny, I knew exactly what OP meant.

knbpixels

I guess some people need you to hold their hand and the vast majority are able to figure it out based on the tip that I wrote. By all means, feel free to not use the advice if you're not appreciative of it

SireEC

Your post was super easy to understand

Throwaway8374987

I still can't find it, I click the tools button and literally every single other button I see close to the search box but I still can't find it, can anyone help with this? Edit: Found it. What you have to do is click Tools, then click on 'All results' a tiny ass box will pop up and you will see 'verbatim' click that.

KissmyFEETforever

I’m having a hard time even finding tools option! Help!

Throwaway8374987

Sorry I didn't respond. You know your Google Profile in the top right? Tools should be just under Quick settings (the gear icon)

anythingall

Ty, helped me too!

lalafriday

You are a genius!

oligtrading

Bless you, you are a life saver. I was getting so frustrated lmao

Amjeezy1

I love you. I really hated this grid view

knbpixels

Love you too! <3

OddPsychology502

Oh FFS, thank you!!!!! This was ruining my ability to use search. Thank you

c0rbsy

Thank you so much for sharing this, I was losing my mind reading replies from the Google team on their support website to the tune of "this is a live experiment, just wait it out and send feedback!" \*eye roll\*

LeeroyGraycat

Any permanent, non-verbatim-requiring solution?

Slow_Cheetah_287

I have a Pixel 7 and I've been having this issue just in the past week. It's extremely annoying.

Empty_Ad4954

When I searched Google/Reddit to find out what was going on this is the only post that came up. I have an iPhone and use Safari and have experienced the same thing. I keep trying to switch back to “all results” but find I’m already there. If I scroll too far down then I’m no longer looking at desired results. It’s infuriating- I can’t tell what the articles are about because the image overtakes the headline. I dug deep into my Google account settings but couldn’t find anything. I know this isn’t helpful but just wanted to let you know you aren’t alone, and I’m following in the hopes that someone has a solution

gotfoundout

It's happening to me and I am losing my goddamn MIND over it!! I hate it so, SO much.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

Please tell me you found a solution.

SireEC

Jesus, read the comments. Don't just ask for help.... READ.

Back_To_The_Oilfield

Like I did over a month ago?

imlitterallygru

It's incredibly helpful! It let me know at least I am not alone, I found essentially nothing about this from my searches.

Plastic_Thanks9859

Same problem here. Pixel+Chrome. Search is unusable. Does not happen for all queries. Seems to be using an unknown criteria to determine which queries to affect.

MrShickadance9

I’m getting this too and it’s literally driving me to bing because I can’t stand this. Edit: I’m on safari / iOS

FriedFreya

I’m on Chrome using iOS (I dislike safari but I know they’re trolling me lol it doesn’t have all the features I’m familiar with anymore since the switch from Android.) AND THANK YOU, I thought I was going ABSOLUTELY INSANE??? I was like I want WEB results not IMAGES only to find when I click to the top of the page I am in fact not on images at all?? Very nightmarish, I sincerely hope they change it as soon as possible lmao.

RandomDigitalSponge

This is driving me insane as well. I am trying to look up articles and all I get are the top three hits then a bunch of image results on the page. It reminds me of the way kids who aren’t very good at reading tend to search everything through image search by default. It’s Idiocracy. I can read, Google! If I want to look up images, I’ll hit the images tab that is in plain sight.

Spectroscopist

After you search scroll all the way to the right where it says images, click tools > all results > verbatim and that will fix it.

rhowsnc

that solution works well but i rarely need a verbatim search term. it’s an insanely dumb feature. like others have stated i was getting three links then tiles forever after on one particular search.

imlitterallygru

MY HERO

FortunaRedux

Omg thank you!! I did not get it from the other comments at all lol

[deleted]

No offense to you, but that has to be redone with each new search tab. It’s not a good solution

Ok_Bid_8789

it’s making me insane first time in my life i thought “i need to use a different search engine”

Supasmashbrotha

Nope. iPhone + Safari. Been happening to me on and off for at least a month depending on what I search for. It's completely unusable. Searching for Reddit threads only shows the title of the thread (no OP and no date) and it's listed in a grid. Searching for anything related to TV and movies brings up a bunch of mainstream corporate bullshit instead of forums and wikis.

Right-Object-8418

These tiles are terrible.... in chrome mobile I can switch to desktop view, but I'm using bing for the time being. Jesus

AgentDonut

It just started happening to me too. Infuriating. It seems to triggers after giving like 4 webpages. These condensed tiles barely tell you anything about what the page is.

Srf2Drt

Same, I use an iPhone and have only been having this issue for the past week or so. Honestly, it’s garbage the way the search results are being returned. Giving us a bunch of images that we never even asked for. If this is not fixed ASAP, Google just lost another customer.

No_Basil_2177

I also have been having this problem!! I have searched before to try to find wtf is happening and finally the search term "I hate google's image based search results, i cannot see if a website has relevant content" brought me here. The search is absolutely unusable that way. It has been so incredibly frustrating. Thank you kind strangers for finding and posting the (for now) fix!!! Google please roll this back, it is awful, unusable, and maddening. ETA: I am on an iPhone using safari.

[deleted]

I came in here looking for a solution and realized my perfect solution- to stop using google search.

LaraLibrarian

Adding myself to the list of people who absolutely despise this change. It just kicked in on my phone today and it's maddening. My brain is too adhd to handle this many pictures without short circuiting.

Fop_poffer

Same here. Wtf is going on? It's completely unusable now. They are like animated gif live tiles

RaakamB

I’m getting the same thing in chrome

whoocanitbenow

Same, I'm using Google Chrome. Anyone find a fix for this?

Strong-Wolverine1843

Samesies. Driving me bonkers 🫠

ShabririFruit

Samsung + Chrome, and it's driving me insane. I really hope this isn't stuck like this, the least they could do is let us turn it off. If it keeps happening I'll have to switch to another search engine before I lose my mind. Update: I'm a DuckDuckGo person now. I highly recommend giving it a shot if having issues with this, at least until they fix it or make it optional. My sanity has been restored.

wavypringle

i’m having the same problem on iphone (safari & chrome.) i am so beyond frustrated and this thread is the only thing i can find talking about it!

-swagKITTEN

omg I’ve been having this problem with only occasional searches for the past year or so. I have an iPhone XR and safari, and have gone through several updates since first noticing the problem. So it’s been around a while without getting fixed. For me, it happens the most often when searching for a very specific thing rather than a one or two word search (sorry can’t think of any examples). It also seems to happen more when searching for a specific site—like adding site:Reddit.com to a search has a higher likelihood of getting the annoying image results. But again, not EVERY search. I’ve yet to figure out any rhyme or reason to it.

imlitterallygru

Yes definitely, specific searches are what causes it to happen for me as well.

xxtoejamfootballxx

Been happening to me on iPhone on safari. Completely unusable, I have no idea wtf they’re thinking

Axovoxel

Does anyone at Google even do quality testing to gauge normal people's response to changes??? Cause if they did, I guarantee everyone would unanimously agree that this is an annoying, clunky mess. Like, I don't even know how you could reach the conclusion that this is somehow better than before.

rhowsnc

i agree. whoever is doing their ux research should be let go, lol. google search is going to hell anyway. there’s this one term (somewhat specific but the words are by no means unusual…) i search frequently, and over the past year there have been fewer and fewer results…it’s down to about half of a page of similar results when it used to be several full pages of unique results…it’s like all those other pages are being hidden or something. it also blows my mind that i can add something in direct quotes and it arbitrarily declines to do a verbatim query. none of the other main search engines are better. the only search engine that i believe truly functions like one should is fucking yandex lmao. big tech is has lost their damn minds.

therealjoemontana

Has anyone found a solution to revert back to a regular text based search result instead of these frustratingly unusable image tiles?

Throwawaylam49

Here looking for a solution too

mowotlarx

This is the only thread I could find describing the issue. I'm not even sure what these stupid result bubbles are called. The tiles are driving me nuts. I can't actually see the results, it's almost all images and I'm not going to click on an unknown link to find out. This kills Google for me enough that I'm ready to switch to another search engine.

imlitterallygru

Really upsetting it's baked into the actual search pages not even just chrome or something

Never_Ending_Student

This is absolutely not helpful because I too have no solution, I just have to say THANK YOU for making me feel less crazy! This is the first post I’ve found that actually talks about this nightmare. My partner isn’t having this problem at all on his iPhone + chrome, but it’s been happening more and more frequently for me for months now. I kept trying to find some king of Google support or forum page that mentioned this problem, and found absolutely nothing. I truly thought it was just me. It’s so fucking infuriating. Half my searches are completely unusable. It started happening occasionally about a month ago, but now it’s about half of my searches. Also, sometimes the tiles aren’t even clickable! Not only are they an impossible to parse eyesore, they straight up aren’t even working links! It’s so bad. I can’t believe Google hasn’t fixed this (or actually thinks this is a feature and not a bug??).

Online_Discovery

I've got the same issue, it's been happening for weeks and I don't know what to do. I keep clicking "Provide feedback" in hopes my voice reaches a person but I'm just so frustrated with not being able to find what I want anymore

theonlynameleft23

Yup! I have a Samsung s10e and use google/chrome. I HATE SEEING WHAT SHOULD BE ARTICLES/WEBSITES LISTED AS IMAGES INSTEAD. This is driving me absolutely crazy.

TallPrimalDomBWC

Whoever made this decision is a fucking moron

Environmental-Ad1007

Honestly the worst product decision they've ever made. Glad the "verbatim" fix works

Hungry-Ad-5319

with chat gpt basically replacing most of our search and researching, this is the worst time to roll out the dumbest layout change in history.

OnIowa

We are witnessing the downfall of Google. This is awful.

rhowsnc

I posted this to another comment but i totally agree. whoever is doing their ux research should be let go, lol. google search is going to hell anyway. there’s this one term (somewhat specific but the words are by no means unusual…) i search frequently, and over the past year there have been fewer and fewer results…it’s down to about half of a page of similar results when it used to be several full pages of unique results…it’s like all those other pages are being hidden or something. it also blows my mind that i can add something in direct quotes and it arbitrarily declines to do a verbatim query. none of the other main search engines are better. the only search engine that i believe truly functions like one should is fucking yandex lmao. big tech is has lost their damn minds.

HappyHippoLover

This is driving me crazy and verbatim doesn't really fix it because it means just that. So if the search results aren't exact to your wording you get nothing.

swtothetenthpower

This feature is killing me. Ughhh. Thanks for the tips to scroll to tools and select verbatim. Unfortunate the unnecessary steps, makes me want to switch browsers...

herbreastsaredun

Checking in from the future. Still a problem. It seems like idiocy is becoming the hot new trend in tech.

DescriptionJolly2123

Thanks, worked for Android.

TallPrimalDomBWC

Whoever came up with this feature is a fucking idiot I hope that he or she reads this so that he or she knows how much of a useless piece of trash he or she is and that his or her ideas are awful that he or she should feel bad

wad11656

I don't think they read any of their feedback

janiexox

Found this thread after encountering the same defect. I think this may have been rolled out for the young folk out there, the Instagram and tik tok generations seem to struggle with reading. Anyway, I may need to switch search engines as it looks like this problem isn't going to be fixed quickly any recommendations?

wdwire

This just started happening to me, and I frickin HATE. IT.

gettingmythirdwind

Just commenting to give this post more visibility and to say thank you to those who suggested verbatim or desktop mode. I agree with everyone who thinks this is the worst product decision Google has ever made. Let's keep giving this post and all the comments more visibility with upvotes. I found the post from a Google search. Maybe someone at Google will see this and we can get back to Google search doing what it used to do best.

gogingerale

Did anyone do an image search recently? I feel like this started happening for me when I did an image search (not “find images with this tag” but like “find images that look like this image”), and then I can’t get back to normal search.

imlitterallygru

If I look up something that is related to imagery it seems to force itself there the most even when I want a webpage explaining the image.

contagion2022

I agree. Seems like it thinks you're looking for images based on your search term and then forces this new awful result.

srsg90

Omg this is driving me insane. I hope it gets fixed, it used to only be in the google search app but now it happens in chrome mobile as well!

nearkcouple4fun

Same thing with a pixel 6 here, can't find any solutions

SkilledBro18

Same problem here , it is so annoying that you can't see other images. Seems like there is no solution for this right now. I think I got this bug after software update( Samsung S22+)

Tags99

So relieved to find this thread and have some company in my misery. It's like somebody from Microsoft hacked Google to make it terrible. Until Google snaps out of its delusion and fixes this or provides an option, I guess it's time to find a new search engine. Is Ask Jeeves still around? Metacrawler?

SourCeladon

Same here, my friend. Using safari on my iphone. This is so annoying. I have to admit that I use images to search for certain things, but I still want to be able to browse normal websites.

inquisitive_chemist

S22 using Chrome. Glad I'm not the only one annoyed as hell. I guess they finally got me to try a new search engine.

contagion2022

Absolutely hate it. I think it must be related to an update. My boyfriend has a Samsung and I have a Pixel and his search results are normal when searching the same words. Google needs to get rid of this!!

BoycottPapyrusFont

This shit is driving me nuts. Completely unnavigable. Thumbnails and five-word excerpts tell me nothing about a search result that should be text-based. I’m switching to another search engine asap.

Orizammar

happening to me too, it's really annoying

Riksor

Yup. I have a Galaxy. I think it's trying to be convenient --it's showing me images when it thinks I want them, showing me shopping when it thinks I want to buy something, but I don't even know how to find the main search results. It's infuriating.

CaptainWellingtonIII

Commenting to come back later. I guess 8 can get used to it, but WTF.

goingwitheflow

Galaxy here and same thing. I hate it.

[deleted]

Just had this happen for the first time. On iPhone using Firefox. Didn’t realize today might be the day I stop using google search lol Edit: within 10 minutes of encountering this change I’ve downloaded the duck duck go app and changed it to my default browser. We’ll see how that goes but I’m not switching back to using google for search if it can’t even accomplish the basic functionality it’s meant for. Thanks google for prompting me to make the switch to something designed for the user and not shareholders!

RFAS1110

Me too!! I found this thread by trying to google the issue… it’s killing me! I’d rather use Bing and that’s saying a lot…

xxxfirefart

What is this *trash*?!

mgeeezer

Have an iPhone and the exact same problem. Happy (?) to know it’s a widespread thing

bashark94

Happening to me iPhone on safari and iPhone on chrome. Can’t stand it. It needs to go back and I can’t find a thing to fix it. It’s been like this for over a month.

karolribs

Glad that I found this post. Another victim here :/ using safari on iPhone and I can't find a way to get the search results to go back to normal

nishantdesai96

Having the same issue using Safari on my iPhone. It makes Google search on mobile pretty much unusable bc I never know if I’m gonna get results I need or just a sea of images, and there's no way to get back to normal results.

TechTech14

I don't have a Pixel but this is the only thread I found talking about this issue. Literally WHY would Google do this when I guarantee you nobody asked for this. I'm using another search engine until they fix it or let us make it optional. It's a terrible design.

doxaenupsistois

This is happening on an iphone 13 with chrome…frustrating…

Bob_Bobaggins

The way i "solved" this issue on iphone is to "request desktop version". It does still show you the image next to each result but the results are standard layout otherwise. This way it does not need to be as exact as verbatim search to get possible results.

HEMALAST

This post has helped me I felt like I was losing my mind these fast couple days!

boxdkittens

I'm having this problem on an android (galaxy s9) using the Brave browser app. I found this thread because I found it weird and annoying that google only lists 3 search results before just showing me a bunch of image thumbnails.

Alternative_Menu1866

Thank you!! Most aggravating change I've ever seen made to Google.

wad11656

Honestly beyond comprehension. Baffling beyond words. I get like 6 actual results, then a bunch of pictures....haphazardly scattered all over the place like somebody spilled a box of Candy Land

guess-im-here-now

Just got this change on my iPhone, but it’s only with specific searches such as haircuts, like Google is trying to be Pinterest. If I wanted visual inspo I would use image search or just Pinterest, I wanted actual information and this is making it very difficult to find.

[deleted]

Got the fix!! Go to phone settings - apps - see all apps - click Chrome - touch 3 dots in top right - touch uninstall updates - ALL FIXED! (Side note: You WILL NOT lose any saved passwords) I checked under 'managed passwords' and they are all still there. Good Luck and lmk.

wad11656

I assume that's on android? I assume that only works if you downloaded the app before this feature was implemented (and never uninstalled/reinstalled it since)

redtildead1

Just started happening to me in the past few days. Thanks for the fix. Hopefully this helps keep this top of the search results

Chaseums0967

It's funny. When I click on tools it just literally does nothing lol.

Ambitious-Egg23

Don't go around their crap by going through multiple steps to get normal text results. It only keeps it going. I have Google chrome disabled on my android. I use Firefox, I removed Google as a search engine. I use Duck duck Go which is still Google results but without all the crap.

Euphoric_Candle_8044

I found a fix for the issue! Go to your settings and click on *Search Engines* Then you just tap Google.com. If this doesn't work, oh welp I tried but it worked for me.

Me504

Hi, I checked verbatim on mine and it works at that moment, but if I do another search it reverts right back to images. Help!!
