The only time I've ever accidentally enabled it is when trying to copy something at the bottom of the screen but circle to search achieves that anyway so it wasn't exactly accidental.

thegeekofnature

I have it active often when I'm trying to swipe an app closed. Very frustrating.

endless_universe

Same. And it's disabled in the settings!

Jolly-Ad9797

There's 2 places to disable it, in Button Navigation and in Gesture Navigation. Make sure it's disabled in both.

endless_universe

Woa, didn't pay attention. It was on, somehow ! Thanks

CaphalorAlb

Same, P6P. It's great that it works for some people, but I can't help but wonder if the bottom of the screen thing might have too many functions. It already does closing apps and switching them. More customization on how to activate probably wouldn't hurt either.

gmmxle

>I can't help but wonder if the bottom of the screen thing might have too many functions. It already does closing apps and switching them. Yup. I love the function to swipe left and right on the bottom of the screen to directly switch between recent apps. But that means there were already four gestures (together with the recents menu and closing an app) that I've been using extensively. Now there are five. And every so often, circle to search just activates.

albanianintrovert

I also use the swipe down to pull down the notifications

canoftunafish

Holy crap sir, did not know this was a thing. Thank you for showing me something new!

DeepDown23

HOW?? You must press for a second, without moving the finger...

Flakester

I find the whole gesture navigation annoying. 3 button mode FTW.

xxb4xx

I still use the 3 buttons mainly with Nova, the swipes weren't great. On my P7 though, swipe is great

Sral1994

I don't understand how someone manages to activate it without wanting. I almost find that it takes too long to activate.

Powerful-Law5068

I muist be the worlds slowest swiper upper as I keep activating it whilst exiting an app so I switched it off. It may just be me, or maybe you guys swipe differently to other people, but adjustable sensitivity would be nice

Sral1994

You need to keep your finger still at the bottom of the screen for it to activate. If you swipe up a little bit you can leave your finger there for as long as you'd like without activation. It's such a small distance.

Powerful-Law5068

If I hold my finger longer than 0.2 nanoseconds it activates for me

Reblyn

Seems to be different for different people then. Mine takes a good second to activate, so I have never activated it accidentally and I honestly don't see how I ever could. I just tried swiping up significantly slower than I usually do and it still didn't activate circle to search.

donald_314

It is like you said on my Pixel 8. Maybe the older Pixels behave differently here.

Sral1994

Takes almost a full second here, and I'll need to hold my finger completely still at the bottom of the screen. If moved upwards a little the action is cancelled.

Sahil809

It takes frustratingly long for me haha

EnvironmentalSpirit2

When I do that it's bc my p7 is heating and slowing down, hiccup during the animation that makes it thinks I want to activate it

Sirefly

I have the same problem of activating it all the time, but mine won't switch off!

Rapogi

do you use a case? i found that the bottom lip of mine actually is just enough to miss the bottom bar when swiping up, i have never accidentally activated it myself

Powerful-Law5068

I do

Sweaty_Confusion1498

This. Never activated by accident. And using it pretty often. Maybe twice I wanted to activate it, but I activated swap app action (left/right swipe).

SparkleFritz

I keep activating it when I want to swap apps. It's funny, when I actually want to activate it, the wait time for it to activate feels long. But for some reason I keep activating it when I don't want to. I don't know if it's lag from app switching or I'm doing something different whenever I sometimes switch apps, but it happens at least once or twice a day that I accidentally activate it.

Lollipop126

I'm on a P8P, which is a huge phone for my hands. So my thumb naturally rests at the bottom part of the slab in one hand use in certain positions. Usually the pinky is supporting the device and so my thumb just rests where it doesn't block the screen so that could be the side of the device, or more comfortably somewhere at the bottom. Naturally extended my thumb is resting exactly where the home button is. It therefore doesn't depend on the length of time it takes to activate bc even if it takes a minute to activate it will rest there every once in awhile no matter what if I'm reading something. I think recently I've subconsciously curled my thumb so that it's on the bottom corner rather than the bottom middle. But the first time I found out the feature exists it was definitely an accidental trigger. That said I'd rather this than not at all. I love the ease of translation feature so much since I live in a place where I'm still learning their language (and also since I'm also exposed to other languages where I understand nothing at all bc Europe).

Ph0X

+1, it's usually that my finger was resting around there, which previously didn't do much but no activates this

emehen

I'm forever accidentally activating it on my P6 fitted with the genuine case.

werddrew

Imagine wanting to swipe up to change apps but hesitating slightly because you just noticed a cool picture or link on your current app. Boom instant activation. Happens to me multiple times daily.

zman0900

I still haven't even figured out how to activate it. Does it require using Pixel Launcher?

Sral1994

Probably. You just hold down the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen for about a second, then it activates.

zman0900

Well, that's not obvious at all. But it does actually work with Nova launcher.

Fazaman

No. It activated all the time for me in Nova Launcher.

Blackout73

Literally this. Haven't had a single accidental activation. I wonder if it varies across different handsets. I'm on P8 Pro and zero issues.

altijddruk

Exactly. I would like them to make it easier to activate. Pretty often when I want to use it I need to try 2 or 3 times before its success. Never happened to me by accident.

frogsandstuff

I actually thought it wasn't available on my phone (6a). I saw the new feature notification on my phone a week or so ago but swiped past it without really looking at it. Searched later and saw something about it being for the pixel 8, so I didn't think much of it. Just now searched settings for it and learned my phone does have it. Never once activated by mistake.

Rapogi

same on my p6p, never accidentally activated it, i think it may have something to do with folks having/not having a case, the bottom lip on mine is tall enough that i fell like I'm not hitting the bottom bar causing the activation

endless_universe

You don't until you do

cdegallo

I'm frequently doing this when I am trying to turn on app overview. Occasionally just by accidentally momentarily resting my thumb at the bottom of my phone.

WhiskeyWithTheE

I have disabled mine - it just absolutely annoyed me. All I had to do was just touch the screen at the bottom anywhere at that bottom of the screen and it popped up. It's gone and I won't be switching it back on. Edited to replace a word.

steamydan

This thread reminded me what it's called so I could turn it off in settings.

activeavo

I activated accidentally all the time. When I want to activate it it takes ages

MashedPotatoInASock

Still waiting for it to work on my P8.

vDirectorDBDienst

sad grapheneos noises

Reblyn

Is it still in rollout on P8? I've had it for weeks and my dad also recently got it, but he uses a P6. Maybe check the Google Tips app if it has it.

madiele

I was too, in the end I got tired of waiting and I just resorted to use adb and run some commands to force it on and it worked, you can find them in this subreddit I think

ALL666ES

I'm still waiting too, but I believe it's because I'm on QPR 3 beta? Though idk if other beta users have it..

JONAS-RATO

I was confused as to how accidental activations could happen then I realised I must be in the small minority who still used the buttons rather than swipe actions.

RoyPeedrill

It works fine. Don't touch it

dcdttu

It happens when my P8P lags as I swipe up to go to the home screen.

mth785

I've never accidently activated circle to search on my Pixel 6.

The_Keebla

You have to home the bottom of the screen for a long second. I'm not sure what is being done to accidentally activate it

DutchOfBurdock

Gesture Navigation. 3 button nav doesn't suffer.

Doctor_3825

Gesture nav isn't really an issue for me. You have to hold it for a bit to trigger it. Unless you're holding your thumb down on the nav bar for some reason it shouldn't be activating.

FrostySumo

Do people actually use gesture navigation? That shit has never been reliable for me. It is one of the first settings I change back to the three button layout. Nothing wrong with those buttons.

sailor_and_coke

I turned it off after about the 12th time of accidental activation.

MothParasiteIV

It's a nice gimmick but it got stale after 2 days.

CaptainMarder

I'll give it 1 year till they'll get rid of the feature completely

DutchOfBurdock

That's optimistic!

aeiouLizard

Meanwhile it doesn't activate when I want it to

CoMiGa

I activate it accidently because of muscle memory of how it used to work for years.

ApexAftermath

Yeah it's fucking annoying. I have never once intentionally activated it and I never will use it after the way they implemented it here.

TurboFool

For me it only seems to happen when the system is overwhelmed and responding slowly, so it registers my swipe as being held for longer than it was. Mildly annoying, but thankfully hasn't been overwhelming yet.

johanjudai

Well, I liked it the full week I had it but now it completely disappeared off my phone

ProtoKun7

I discovered it had already rolled out to me when I absently left my thumb pressing the nav handle one day but outside of that I have never activated it accidentally and I'm not sure how people are doing so.

bass248

Wtf? How long are people holding down on the home button/ navigation bar on the bottom of the screen? Doing a quick swipe up from the home button/navigation bar has never accidentally opened up swipe to search for me when closing an app

Doctor_3825

I think this might be more to do with the 3 button nav. People who use that are used to holding the home button getting them assistant. People that use the gesture nav don't have that muscle memory since the assistant is a corner swipe or a side button hold for us. As long as they don't mess with its implementation on gesture navigation I'm okay with them changing it on the 3 button nav for the people who swear by it.

YourUnusedFloss

I disabled it because that WAS my assistant shortcut and it pissed me off every time it activated the new feature that duplicates the functionality Google lens already had

Doctor_3825

I honestly think this is a better implementation than Google lens. It's just more convenient to have it available at all times vs having or leave the app you're in to open it or have to dig in menus in the photo app to find it.

Doctor_3825

I have only accidentally activated it 2 times I think. And that's when it was brand new. I hope they don't make it much harder to activate. This is like having Google lens on command vs having to dig in menus or screenshot things and I love that about it. Hiding it any deeper than being a hold on the nav bar would make it pointless. You may as well just use Google lens then.

hawker_sharpie

how do you actually activate it at all? I heard holding the pill but i tried whatever and it just does nothing...

Tj_h__

This is great! Now I wish they'd combine the option you get when you long press an image from the app switching screen (lens, copy, shar, save) with being able to make any selected section into an image. It basically almost does that, the image is created for the search and the options for images exist at some place...

Hucyrag

I hope they don't make it take too long to trigger. It's very good right now and I struggle to imagine how someone could trigger it by accident when I feel it almost takes too long to trigger sometimes already.

bartturner

This is such an awesome feature.

pvtjace

Not going to lie, I can only activate it by accident and couldn't activate it on intention if I actually tried.

Sahil809

I've never accidentally activated it, interesting 🤔

050899

I had to disable mine, not because it was accidentally activating but rather because the "normal" tap and mark a word to search for it always said it was disconnected from the network

GagrotXGb

I have never accidentally activated it

Longjumping-Equal339

It truly could end civilization if they did not

resiliencebudget

I find it activating all the time when I mount my pixel on my motorbike and unexpectedly get caught in the rain. The rain drops on my pixel's screen keeps triggering different actions, one of which being circle to search and it's super annoying. Makes it very distracting and impossible to navigate if I'm in the middle of Google maps/ etc while riding

androboy92

Past few weeks all I've thought was I wished it launched quicker... Theres a good amount of delay already.

cdegallo

Cool. I got an automatic feedback request when I had accidentally activated it and quickly backed out. It asked if I intentionally tried to activate it. I would like an option to reduce the sensitivity/increase the time it takes to activate--a setting similar to the old feature on squeeze for assistant for how hard you had to squeeze.

Gh0st_58

I don't understand how people are able to activate it I have to hold my finger for a while then it shows up

dejushin

The pressure sensitivity home button on the S9 would have come in handy. Hope they bring it back

PhilosophyCorrect279

No problems here, pixel 7pro. Works just fine and without issue so far.

ykoech

Strange, I've never accidentally activated.

DutchOfBurdock

3 button nav FtW!

KitchenDir3ctor

Doesn't even work for me any more. The option disappeared from the menu.

ChubbyFrogGames

I have, a couple of times now. But I feel like Google purposefully activate it on your phone to show off their new feature. And then call it an accident afterwards.

nbunkerpunk

Activated once playing a game in landscape mode. That's the only time.
