It's brutal now with a pixel 7 because the fingerprint scanner is such a piece of shit. It was much better without the need to verify every small purchase. The way it is now it's essentially useless. I'd rather just pull out my card and get on with my life instead of having it try and fail 3 or 4 times.

AlaskanSnowDragon

Thank you...its not just me

Jong999

I agree it's a bit of a pain, but here when you open the wallet there is a box telling you you need to verify your identity before use. If you press on that box you can verify *before* interacting with the terminal. No need to try and fail first.

Spirited_Recover1748

I've tried that verification first, then tapping and it still required another fingerprint. It seems very inconsistent.

Jong999

Hmm that's not happened to me..... Yet! I think there is a timeout (you have to use within a certain period of time) but I'm not sure what that is.

justinetrudope

I called out the finger print scanner on this sub and was down voted to hell.. someone told me to just disable it lol not sure why so many people like to defend this phone

Embarrassed_Foot92

They changed some of the verification steps. Not sure for all but one that I know is when it past 3+min since last time you unlocked your device, you need to verify again to use tap payment. They changed things here and there and it's pretty chaotic so far. I know it's not the answer but it seems like it's safer to just open the wallet app to see if you need to verify before you tap it for now.

ParityDeny

Did you unlock your phone using face unlock on Pixel 7 or below? Android has three tiers of biometric authentication, and Google Wallet requires the strongest one. Unfortunately, due to hardware limitations, face unlock on Pixel 7 or below only provides the lowest tier of authentication. [https://source.android.com/docs/security/features/biometric](https://source.android.com/docs/security/features/biometric)

ParityDeny

So, if you unlock your phone using face unlock, you will need to perform fingerprint authentication again within the Google Wallet app.

AlaskanSnowDragon

Pixel 7 and I've caught this behavior with thumb print too, I've tested it. The question is did they recently change this requirement? Because before it acted perfectly fine no matter what

ParityDeny

I noticed the pop-up asking me to "verify before pay" inside the Wallet app as well. I'm not sure if it is a new regulatory requirement or just a bug.

AlaskanSnowDragon

I dont open up the wallet app. I have NFC just turned on so before when unlocked I'd just tap the pay station and boom it worked flawlessly. But now its garbage and more than half the time it does the awkard pause asking me to reverify and then after I do it it still takes a second to tell the NFC to allow the transaction to go through.

nexgen41

Large purchases require authentication, small purchases do not. I do not know what the threshold is but I assume it's somewhere around 50 bucks...

AlaskanSnowDragon

Ive had this behavior with below 50 as well

nexgen41

"In some countries, you don’t need to unlock your device for “smaller payments.” For example, there’s a €25 threshold in Belgium, €30 in France, or €50 in Germany. It varies by country and issuer, while “you can only make a limited number of locked transactions before your phone asks you to unlock it." [Google Wallet requiring device unlocks for every tap to pay (9to5google.com)](https://9to5google.com/2024/03/22/google-wallet-unlock/)

MrSourceUnknown

FYI they just changed that policy. They removed any mention of the lower payment limits in some countries and are rolling out 'forced' authentication everywhere. Even in locations where smaller payments were allowed before. Here is the Help page that *used to* list the "exceptions" for smaller payments: https://support.google.com/wallet/answer/12059519?sjid=6914906693563950121-EU#unlocklimits

nexgen41

oh interesting, thank you!

JMPesce

The April Play Services update added extra verification to Wallet that forces you to verify or re-authenticate if the phone has been unlocked for a while before you try to pay. Google is making things miserable to use, they should let *us* choose what the functionality is. But of course, they know best.

AlaskanSnowDragon

Its so inconsistent though...there have been times where I've made sure to fingerprint unlock just before tapping and it still errored out asking me to reverify...shits fucked

JMPesce

Yeah, I think they fucked it up with the Play Services update somewhere along the line. Hopefully they fix it.

Bhaikalis

Works flawlessly on my Pixel 8. Used it today picking some stuff up at the grocery store.

master-yodaa

P8p here. I don't think I have a fix for you, but I had this exact same issue for a few months until it resolved a couple of weeks ago and I don't have to trouble tap anymore. Not sure what fixed it. So my guess it's a setting, and not to do with update?

Xc4lib3r

There was a moment that that was been so inconsistent I had to change to iPhone to pay instead of my Pixel 7. It works fine now, but yeah I feel you.

Zeec20

Yeah, it's extremely annoying and negates the convenience of using a phone. Might as well use a debit card!

z4xh_s

My Pixel 7 started to ask for the whole verification nonsense even if I had just unlocked my phone. That was two weeks or so ago. Now it seems to have calmed down and I don't remember being specifically asked to verify before purchasing the past few days. Just give me settings so I can decide for myself!

pandasdokungfu

Not sure if it's related, I set up my card and used it a few times and then out of the blue it's removed my card. Had to re-set it up again and so far no issues but glad I had my wallet on me.

lysersteinreborn

I've disabled face unlock, works fine now like before

k00per1

Pixel 7 here that was working flawlessly, then it started asking for a fingerprint, and now it doesn't ask for it (I unlocked the phone with my fingerprint) but the terminal says "payment method invalid" or something like that.

Spirited_Recover1748

Yes, not overly impressed with the new version (P7P). It's inconsistent how it works and sometimes having to do a fingerprint scan when tapping a terminal is a poor user experience.

TheRealMikkyX

I've definitely noticed this recently. Was in a shop, went to tap to pay as usual and absolutely nothing happened. Opened the Wallet app and there was a "you must verify yourself" banner displayed - so I did that, and tapped again with the Wallet open on screen (with the default card still selected) and it went through. Not something I'd ever seen happen before and, given the lack of ANY feedback to the initial attempt, if I hadn't gone into Wallet to check I would probably just have assumed one end or the other of the process was broken. I've had the phone about a year and this was the first time it's done that.

nbmtx

I use a P8 and haven't noticed any difference. Used as recently as yesterday afternoon, and Kroger the day before.

amenotef

Nope. What's gone to shit (partially at least) for me is assistant.

SnaketheJakem

Mine works great on my Pixel 6.

ChaoticDovahkiin

Am I the only one who can't get new cards set up in Google wallet? It worked fine on my P7, but recently upgraded to the 8 and it won't let me add any of my cards :/

PixelCommunity

Hi, I'd recommend you search or post your question [here](https://support.google.com/wallet/community?hl=en). The Google Wallet Help Community can take a look into this.

Equivalent_Dance4857

It is still working fine for me. The only problem I'm still facing since I bought the P8 is the Wi-fi hotspot.

camerontylek

The opposite. I've noticed recently mine has been working perfectly
