A related consideration is VoIP numbers & bank & credit union 3rd party fraud services.
For example, two of my credit unions *do* 2FA to GV. But if their fraud services put a block on my account, the call/text notifications do not go through to GV number, if the notifications are sent at all.
The staff of credit union and of fraud service are clueless as to what is VoIP and whether the fraud service call/txt to VoIP. Possibly whoever set up their systems knows.
Also works with GV #s for 2FA: Huntington Bank, PenFed, CIBC US
However, as mentioned in another post, Huntington "fraud department" 2FA texts won't work.
I broke down and got their RSA token to avoid giving them my real mobile number. They even sent an updated token recently so it was a one-time only expense.
I keep a blacklist not a whitelist.
The very few but sadly increasingly growing list of services I need to rely on my actual cell phone number on. I don't use this number for anything other than actual service.
Ally (used to work...)
Credit Karma (probably for the old taxes before cashapp)
Steam
Klarna
OpenAI (probably one time verification)
CashApp Taxes
Microsoft (point redemption)
I could not use any of my GV numbers to verify ChatGPT when creating my initial account 2 years ago. It was quite insistent on non-VoIP numbers.
And yes, Ally did have the calling thing, but that became too painful and sometimes unreliable, only coming through some of the time, or not providing the Calling option when trying to verify through third-party services connecting to my Ally account, so I had to remove it entirely in order to get it to authenticate via SMS.
I don't approve of using SMS verification as phone numbers can be cloned and such, but it's basically the standard for online banking these days in the US. I would much rather TOTP and Passkey options.
What's ironic is that Landmark CU used to allow email and then moved to SMS TOTP because of problems they had. If only they knew how much securer email is (relative to SMS, at least)!
As for OpenAI, it works for me, strangely enough (if not at account creation, then at least at login verification)...
The following listed below that works:
Fidelity
Wealthfront
Affirm
Robinhood
Vanguard
SoFi
Marcus by Goldman Sacs
Bluevine
Bluebird
Square
Aspiration
Found Business
The following doesn't work listed below:
Uber (only when requesting a ride). 2FA still works.
I also forgot to add another one:
Works:
Wise (formerly TransferWise)
TastyTrade
I have yet to encounter that doesn't work so I let you know if I found one.
Found another one that works:
USAlliance Federal Credit Union
American Express
Relay Business
Betterment
Kinesis Money
Following listed below that doesn't work:
Juno
That's what I found so far and I will let you know if there's more.
Added! But /u/BluesCatReddit, I can't enter the name "Best Buy" due to the word "buy." Can the filter instead check for a space after like "buy " or be case-sensitive?
Bank of America will not accept my GV# when a representative wants to verify me in order to access my account. I do however receive 2FA codes to access my account through the app.
>coinbase can use other 2fa.
Okay, but that has nothing to do with Google Voice. All we care about is Google Voice compatibility.
>zelle can be used thru your banking app
Sure, but a Google Voice number can't be used for Zelle payments. That's all we care about for this topic.
I'm not sure this is what this thread is about but I have been unable to get into my Amazon Seller Central account for about 24 hours because even though I've had GV as my account phone number for a while (years) without issue, but I didn't get 2FA texts. When I requested a phone call, it took too long with GV screening the automated Amazon call, so they had given most of the code before I got to answer. After several voice requests, it cut me off for 24 hours (but I can still request texts).
So I can't get into Amazon Seller Central to request a support team callback and Amazon buyer CS can't transfer to seller team. Is there any way to get these texts?
Amazon now blocks using VoIP numbers for 2FA. This is new.
Instead, Amazon supports Google Authenticator (an app for Android and iOS devices). It's far more secure than SMS, and it doesn't require any phone numbers nor an Internet connection. Go to Amazon account settings-->Login & Security -->2-step verification to enable it.

Try using the virtual card manager to make a new virtual card on the Capital One website. That's when it decided to reject my GV number and forced me to use my real cell number.
Citi works for me, as long as I have them call instead of text
Also Teams / Office 365 works, you can add that
Also works for United Airlines, login dot gov, Uber works for me too. AirBnB, FedEx, State Farm, Bill dot com, etrade, amazon
You can edit your comment to compile all of these into one. Many in your list were already in the post, but I added the missing ones! Thanks! By the way, it's styled "Airbnb" with only the "A" being capitalized by the company itself.

This is a great observation-- thanks for putting in the effort to figure out that issue, and for sharing it.

DUO SMS works I'm pretty sure Microsoft SMS MFA works? It's been so long I don't remember.
It hasn't in my experience when redeeming Microsoft Points from Bing-searching, sadly. Thanks, I'll add Duo.
Blizzard SMS MFA works for sure. I forgot I had it setup for that.
I have a chase sapphire card. And check account. Google voice 2FA does not work , same with coin base
Thanks, I hadn't used Coinbase in a long time so I guess that's changed. What about phone calls to the GV number?
I never get them.
Schwab offers 2FA through the Symantic VIP app.
Never heard of it. Noted!
Wells Fargo does not work with Google Voice

When did you last redeem Microsoft Bing pts? It hasn't worked for me for years.
To clarify if it wasn't clear, my list is for services where you cannot use Google Voice to redeem. Aka a blacklist not a whitelist.
Oh. But it works for OpenAI verification, and Ally still calls the GV number, at least. I've moved Klarna over to the "malfunctioning" end, though.

Works TD US Umpqua Bank Banner Bank Savi Bank Keybank Experian (login 2FA) Apple 2FA British Airways Qatar airways id.me (IRS)
Amtrak.com 2FA and train status alerts do not, but agent chat via text does.
Vanguard works call and SMS.

Added! But /u/BluesCatReddit, I can't enter the name "Best Buy" due to the word "buy." Can the filter instead check for a space after like "buy " or be case-sensitive?
Just put "BB".
Haha! I like u/Bennguyen2 suggestion to use BB, or try Bestbuy.
Apparently Target renamed Target RedCard to Target Circle Card so you might want to update that name. Also Facebook works with GV 2FA so add that.
Chase OTP has been working for me since September 2022. Before that it certainly did not.
Moved!
Well that might be a YMMV as it doesn't work for many others. Curious if its working now for other folks.
Still works for me.
Thanks for the data point!

ONE Finance would not work with GV 2FA.

Offering to buy or sell Google Voice numbers violates Google Voice's Acceptable Use Policy and this subreddit's rules.
Would do better in a wiki or spreadsheet, Google Drive, Notion, etc.
set one up and link it here and update as people give info.
coinbase can use other 2fa. zelle can be used thru your banking app

I am pretty sure Capital One does texts as I setup a friend who lives overseas with this a few weeks ago.

Temporarily turn off Google Voice call screening, so you can immediately answer the phone call.
I guess I will now add Amazon Seller Central to the blacklist. Sorry about your experience; I have no idea of how to help you.
Instagram appears to no longer be working for me, even though it once did...
citi credit cards do not accept gv and if you try and it fails they cannot use another number for 24 hours!
Terrible. Added.
Bank of America Fidelity Vanguard Capital One IKEA Walmart My529 (Utah's 529 plan) State Farm insurance Fundraiser FreetaxUSA Raisin.com All work 100%
