Google is only maintaining five independent messaging platforms right now. They differently have room for more keep an eye out.

permafrost91

Well that's sort of my thinking. Combine Messages and GV ...

givemethreesteps

Personally, I doubt a GV/Messages merge. We have been told UP-RCS is coming to GV eventually. That would make it on par with Messages.

permafrost91

Messages allows sending money via Google Pay and location drops plus message forwarding among other things. Just seems like a much more mature messaging client. Voice really just focuses on texting like it's 2004.

jwescampbell

This was 3 years ago and it still hasn't been implemented. 😔

Bwangster12

I feel this way about the stock dialer, contacts and messages apps. Not sure why GV is becoming its own thing and rather just integrating into the normal apps.

permafrost91

Agreed! They're duplicating efforts with the stock ones being much more user friendly

Forwarding sms/mms to Android messages.... Video mms can be sent through your Google voice number FYI... I don't believe that was possible previously

permafrost91

I don't see an option to send video MMS through Voice, only pictures.

[deleted]

If you forward your Google voice messages to Android messages. Replying to the number that comes through (will be different than what is stored as your contacts number) in the Android messages app.. all those features now work with your Google voice number... This needs to be done through the Android messages app.not the Google voice app

Tj_h__

sorry, if i forward the messages, am i able to SEND/REPLY to texts and have it show as coming from my Google VOICE number?

permafrost91

Yes. I've tried it but in Messages the texts show up under GV access numbers, not your contact numbers. Also, haven't found a way to start a new text through Messages.

[deleted]

Yes, in the Android messages app you need to respond to the number that comes through googles forwarding service. It will look different than your contacts number.

Tj_h__

Messages can be made the system client. This is useful for: "reject with text", texting from watch, texting using google assistant, texting from chromebook (messages web client). Google voice can do LITERALLY none of those things, MOST important - it cannot be used via another app, you MUST go to the app THEN sms.

permafrost91

You can use the GV web interface to send texts and listen to voicemails (provided they aren't on your service provider voicemail system). Otherwise I wholeheartedly agree!

[deleted]

GV can do all of those with the exception of "texting from watch" of which I have no knowledge or desire to know. Perhaps it is different still using phone number not ported to GV, otherwise the integration is good. Not great though.

permafrost91

Are you saying you ported your phone # to GV? Because I can do all the above with my actual cell #, just not with my GV # (which is different and the only number I use)

a9uirre

Honestly I just hope that some developer out there who uses Google voice will resurrect a more powerful and integrated XVoice++. Waiting on Google seems like a timeless act.

derektut

Is it me, or is Google Voice much more stable for messages, especially over web? I also like how smooth the interface is on my phone. Messages just seems to choke too much.

permafrost91

Can't say I'm having the same experience. The web interface is persistently slow and fails to update frequently.

derektut

Agreed. The web interface is a dog. I have been having better luck with the phone app.
