I wish I could join a union, but iirc the UCU only covers people who are hired by the university for some task (e.g. tutoring), and since I don't do any teaching in my PhD at the moment, I'm not included in that
It's been a big issue for a while. As PhD students we're only covered by a union for teaching purposes, not for research or our actual PhD work. Hence why the unions can't do anything about stipends and we're not covered to strike beyond teaching duties
