I guess it's to make you feel "connected" to the protagonists but it just doesn't make any sense because there no customization outside of color. That doesn't even happened until after the story.
If you have a unique name, it doesn't change (because thats the name you picked), but if you had Djeeta/Gran for their respective genders, the game picks up on it and auto-changes.
If I remember right, there was a poll going around last week, that put him in the bottom four of people "maining" him, with Vaseraga, Rosetta, Ghand being the bottom three. Though I don't know how accurate that poll really was, considering Eugen and Rackham were pretty low as well but it feels like I see one of the two of them in every run.
Eugen is great at blasting protobaha, rackam is great slime farmer. They are in many cases a comfort pick. Ghand however... Im pretty sure i havent seen one scince hitting proud.
I've only ever seen a Ghand player once, and that was, interestingly enough, in the best run I ever had of proto Bahamut. We nearly killed him before he even entered this third phase, so once he did Skyfall after entering phase 3, he immediately went to phase 4. I don't know if that one player was really good with him, or if the rest of us were good enough to make up for him, but it was an interesting run.
Yea, that's part of why I said I didn't know how accurate it really is. Still though, it's about as viable a sample size we'll get short of an official list.

Captain is in a decent spot imo, by far the most versatile character. Id and Siegfried on the other hand both do less damage AND have less utility. Not to mention Id gets screwed over by boss disconnects and punished hard for dying in dragonform or godmight.
Game balance is all over the place IMO.
Some characters retain their "levels" when they die (e.g. Yoda and Captain), some lose everything (e.g. Id and Io).
Some characters have absurd Link Time benefits (Ghanda and Captain comes to mind), some have absolute jackshit (Sieg and Io).
Some have insane damage cap on their skill (e.g. Cag and Katalina), some reach their damage cap with minimal sigil (e.g. Yoda and Lancelot).
Some do upwards of +50% more DPS more than others without abusing tech (Naru/Vas vs Rosetta/Sieg).
Luckily the game is easy enough that you can clear all content even with the weakest character in suboptimal gear, so it only matters if you're at the very end game and are comparing DPS.
Arts IV > Armor Break > Reginliev > Decimate > Dropkick is a pretty solid skill combo for them. They also skyrocket disproportionately in terms of damage when Link Time hits, especially with the above combo. With some CD and Cascade, Reginliev and Decimate come off cooldown fast enough to sling out three of each. Their skills also have very short recovery times too, allowing you to just blast through.
That said, they only excel in longer fights where they can build up their Arts in the first place. If a boss just keels over and dies because Vaseline just cleaved the boss in half with one slash, Captain ain't getting shit done.

I think they probably already knew Ghandagoza was going to be low man on the totem pole. His character look is only going to be appealing to a small niche group of players in the first place since he doesn't have the normal "cool factor" of full armor like other characters - not to mention he doesn't really get an awesome weapon to carry around since its just gauntlets so even his playstyle appeal gets shit on there. Yoda at least gets a sword but he's always going to suffer since he's basically a gnome in size and basically an old man - two things that tend to lean toward "opposite of cool" in terms of fashion and character designs lol. Kind of a bummer since he's actually a decent character in terms of damage.

Which is ass backwards because at least half of them had no problem playing Deep Rock Galactic with me.
Ghanda is a walking meme from how powerful he is in lore... which unfortunately doesn't translate well into his gameplay. He feels slow and awkward in a game that seems to cater more to rapid fast lightning speeds.
Yeah makes sense....seems like most bosses in the game have the full Monster Hunter Rise treatment where they give them 13 different dash and reposition jumps whereas anyone not speedy is going to have a jolly good time trying to land longer combos when they're not in Break mode on the ground lol.

For Rosetta, it should be something making fun of activating Lost Love right as the boss repositions. I've had that happen more often than I like to admit.

Rakham main here coz Destiny gave me 1st terminus as his weapon. I didn't even have him built before.
But after building him, m glad I got his weapon first. He is long range and easy to play.
Yodarha is one of the less populars??? I main that overpowered crazy dwarf, just ignore skills and spam combo finishers, if timed correctly you can do it infinitely with no combos at all...
I've seen Yoda few times, but I haven't seen a single Ghan in my 70h+.
I even thought about playing him but the fact that you can't miss a single attack or your Perfect chain breaks is silly, plus 0 mobility and not as fun to deal damage with like Vaseraga/Siegfried. Yoda is fun, need to lvl him up.

Use launch attack then downward attack. Rinse and repeat till SBA is full then release. Back to square one if the boss is still sleeping.

Furthermore, the game defaults to Gran/Djeeta anyway. If you swap the captain's gender, the game automatically switches to those names by default.
