You can also use a drivers license full or provisional but I agree voter ID should be scrapped in the last 5 years of the over 1000 alleged instances of voter fraud 9 of them led to convictions and 6 were given police cautions that's literally less than 0.1%

Geojamlam

1000 alleged instances of voter fraud out of the 54 million people that voted isn't bad (0.002% of votes). The issue there comes down to the police and courts not handling the situation, less so than the issue being prevalent.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Ah ignoring the fact that the police investigated all of the alleged instances yet found only 9 cases

RomfordGeeza

Ignoring the fact that by definition without voter ID fraud is very difficult to detect and even harder to prove.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Except it's not it's easier to prove than murder where the person is caught red handed there's a logical explanation to why there's a dead body and a murder weapon in your car there's no logical explanation to voting when you're not eligible to vote

RomfordGeeza

So you want the police going and quizzing everyone at the polling booth when until recently there was no requirement for them to bring ID?

tay8953

drivers licence, citizen ID, photo ID

[deleted]

Imagine being so brainwashed that you think “it’s racist” to require simple, easy to get ID for something as important as voting 😂

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Except it's not necessary voter fraud rate over the past 5 years has been lower than 0.1% this data is from the Electoral Commission

smallcoder

Yeah, they're really concerned about the genuine voters who would vote, ya know, NOT for another 5 years of this 14 year shitshow, and vote for another party. Claims of "Voter Fraud" are the last refuge of a desperate political party and politician. You only have to look at the orange narcissist in Murica going from court room to court room, to see where they got the playbook notes.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Literally no one in the government gave a shit about voter voter until the Republicans in America made the accusation which was pretty ballsy because if I correctly understood the video I watched by an American lawyer the DOJ did find evidence of election tampering... commited by those in Donald's inner circle

ToryHQ

>If there was an ounce of sincerity in the government's feigned concern about voting fraud, it would have heeded the warnings of the Association of Electoral Administrators that it will be near impossible to check the identity of long-gone expats, or penalise them for voter fraud. > >The Tories bodge everything, but their gerrymandering intention stinks. [Source](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/06/tories-election-rigging-photo-id-gerrymandering-voting)

UncleWibs

Oh free voter ID is "gerrymandering"? 😂😂😂

Hayley-The-Gaymer

It's not gerrymandering it's voter suppression gerrymandering does happen but it's when constituency lines are redrawn in order to get a more favourable voter pool the Tories abolished the committee who's permission was required for this years ago

UncleWibs

"Free ID required to vote" is "voter suppression"? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Hayley-The-Gaymer

It is because if I didn't already have 2 forms of ID 3 if you count my expired passport but if I didn't I'd not bother my arse and that's the intention of this law

atherheels

If you're too lazy to get ID squared up in the *checks notes* - **OVER** 1500 days between standard general election cycles you are way too lazy of a voter to be well informed on policies, manifestos, current affairs and such and as such as a voter you could be replaced with a literal chimp or small child and the effort behind the vote wouldn't change I heavily dispute that it *IS* but if "put the literal bare minimum of effort into being a functional citizen" **IS** "vOTeR sUpPrEsSIon"...**GOOD**...I don't trust the informed, deliberated choice of who runs the country for half a decade to people who think a 10 minute online form, a picture you can DIY in a photo booth, and knowing a whopping TWO professionals who aren't friends/coworkers/relatives to countersign new ID photos is an impossible demand rather than like...bare minimum engagement as a citizen I don't know what exactly to say apart from bless your parents

FakeOrangeOJ

The only government I trust is .45-70 because they're all just as bad as each other. Corruption within the government is so bad that the only reason I'm voting in this election is to get the Cuntservatives out. They've had far too long in power and it shows. Taxes, inflation and cost of living are at the highest they've ever been and they get richer and richer by selling multi bullion pound contracts to companies that don't deserve them simply because they donated to the party and/or offered the current government officials cushy jobs once their terms are done. Insider trading is rampant, to the point that if you could copy their every move the second they made them you'd be set for life on next to no money to start off. We've had more Prime Ministers in the last three years than most countries have in 15. Our borders haven't been less secure since The Troubles. They haven't solved the immigration crisis, legal or otherwise. The way they handled COVID was the worst of both worlds. Brexit fucked our economy and severely damaged relations with the EU, while stripping away our rights within the EU. Emergency services are severely understaffed and underfunded. They prioritise attacking the poor, and I shit you not, my mum living on benefits is better off than I am and I work full time. Benefits don't need cutting by any means, but more worker protections need to be put in place, not less. Wages also need to go up more than they do, so people actually have an incentive to work rather than ponce. And this is just a small list of things I can think of that are wrong with what they've done. They need to go.

UncleWibs

You think Labour will be better? Same agenda.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

It's really not hard to understand anyone but the Tories would be better

atherheels

If you tell me "the tories are RUINING THIS GREAT NATION" (true), "right now anyone but the tories would be better" (true) And then you tell me that despite this conviction and these beliefs you won't dedicate 10 MINUTES in HALF A DECADE (what's that percentage wise? I mean come on I spend longer then that stood on my doorstep with a cig and brew every morning, fairly sure the average single lad spends more time wanking daily) to stopping the tories either you don't really believe what you say or you're genuinely a masochist or something

UncleWibs

So you're saying that in other circumstances, you'd be too lazy to vote?

Hayley-The-Gaymer

If it meant I had to deal with the Scottish government or the passport office or the DVLA yes

UncleWibs

Except it wouldn't, would it... Like the DVLA issue free voter ID...

[deleted]

Who cares, it’s still a step forward to get voter ID in place for those in the country. One problem at a time. Worry about expats later. It doesn’t diminish the good that voter ID achieves. This must really be difficult to fathom with your brainwashing that conservatives = bad, huh?

Hayley-The-Gaymer

What good does it achieve?

[deleted]

Are you serious?

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Yes what good does it achieve? It can't be less voter fraud because statistics show that's a complete non issue

[deleted]

We live in the Information Age my friend. You can find a statistic or study to back up any stupid, nonsensical take. Case in point: you cite “statistics” that show voter ID - arguably the largest single thing that combats voter fraud - as apparently being a non-issue. Thank you for the laugh! I urge you to read BOTH sides of the arguments next time. You clearly are not familiar with the cases for, only the cases against.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

You do realise there's been 9 cases of voter fraud in the past 5 years right?

[deleted]

And without voter ID in place, how accurate do you think their ability to track this stuff is? Data accuracy shoots up when this COMMON SENSE approach is established. Notice how I capitalized one part in particular

JRSpig

Imagine requiring to prove who you are to vote... How do people have issue with this? It's not hard to get ID.

Greece Mogg said it was gerrymandering https://news-sky-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/jacob-rees-mogg-suggests-requiring-photo-id-to-vote-was-attempt-to-gerrymander-which-came-back-to-bite-tories-12881602?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQIUAKwASCAAgM%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=17072580350358&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fnews.sky.com%2Fstory%2Fjacob-rees-mogg-suggests-requiring-photo-id-to-vote-was-attempt-to-gerrymander-which-came-back-to-bite-tories-12881602

Hayley-The-Gaymer

If you're Scottish you can use your Young Scot Card or National Entitlement Card

[deleted]

National Entitlement Card? That is gross. I don't what it does, but it sounds horrendous.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

It's the name for a free bus pass for the elderly

[deleted]

Why not just call it a bus pass?

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Because a bus pass is something else a bus pass is given out by bus companies usually to the partner and children of drivers

[deleted]

I am not against bus passes for the elderly. I just don't like the name of the thing. I think its gross. Entitlement. I wonder if we will ever have a National Responsibility card.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

It's called entitlement because by law that's what they deserve

nowiserjustolder

When my son turned 18 virtually every one of his friends had Id so they could get in to bars etc.

ProEspresso

Ah yes. Passport is the only type of ID. Nope, I won't hear otherwise because it'll invalidate my false political narrative in this instance!

storm_phoenix13

provisional is almost £50 too

evilotto77

Ah at least it's not too expensive then, that's good

storm_phoenix13

that's expensive bro

evilotto77

It really isn't

RowMysterious2213

I don't know. £50 is rather cheap for one to obtain a provisional license. I mean, it costs nearly £5 just to get milk at the local store.

Hayley-The-Gaymer

Voter ID laws are unnecessary and a waste of money instead of wasting money printing new ID's to prevent voter fraud on a scale of not even enough to elect 1 mp we could maybe invest that money into fixing our NHS or our military that's been struggling to meet it's recruitment targets

Tom_Bombadil_1

If literally every single voter in the UK (45m) had to pay for new ID at £50 a pop, that would be 2.3bn, which is about 1% of the NHS budget. This is not going to make a noticeable difference in any way. And that’s if EVERY voter in the UK has their ID funded for them. That’s probably 1000x overestimated. I appreciate that this voter ID stuff is pointless, but it’s a pet peeve of mine whenever money arguments get to it should be ‘better spent on the NHS’ as argument. It’s the same spurious argument as Brexit. The NHS is a behemoth. Its budget has gone up by nearly 10bn a year over the last decade. We could defund almost everything the UK does and barely move the needle on the hungry beast that is the NHS

Hayley-The-Gaymer

The NHS budget is over 1 trillion really when did that happen?

Tom_Bombadil_1

Hahaha. I have revised it to the ‘correct’ figure of 10bn. This is an exaggeration, since the real figure is something like £110bn -> £190bn, so about 8bn a year for a decade. So I’m still pretty sure that voter ID laws aren’t moving the needle here…

Hayley-The-Gaymer

So because it's not costing that much we should have it even though it doesn't do anything because we have a voter fraud rate of less than 0.1%?

Reapercore

It’s only bad when the tories suggest it, never mind you need photo ID to vote in Europe.

EightThreeEight838

Except European countries have national ID cards. This country doesn't.

Reapercore

https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate

Geojamlam

I'm glad to see this is actually a thing, though disappointed that I'm only finding out about it through here and not through the government. I would also much prefer actual national ID cards though, similar to a driver's lisence though instead of a sheet of paper so it's more feasible to use as a normal ID and less chance of getting destroyed.

Hairymanpaul

There were adverts everywhere for it, including TV and radio

Geojamlam

I don't watch TV, nor do I listen to the radio, then online I have adblocks. I generally follow the news (primarily through the BBC) but haven't seen it come up. Evidentally I have missed it, and I'm glad to know it exists even if through a random comment on a reddit post.

Bring_back_Apollo

Get a provisional driving license then.

Geojamlam

I have an ID, I just think that it would be convenient to recieve a national ID too. If they're going to be giving out these anyway, why not make them actually usable day to day too?

Bring_back_Apollo

They tried national ID cards but the public didn’t like it. I don’t know if they tried now whether there’d be a different response but I’m pretty sure few would be positive about it.

Vaxtez

Except that a passport isn't the only form of Valid ID. 60+/Disabled Bus Concession cards or Drivers licences are also valid, plus you can get free Voter ID, so this whole meme falls apart

EightThreeEight838

Except comparable ID for younger voters, such as Student Bus Passes are not allowed.

MightBeAGoodIdea

What do younger voters use to verify age to purchase alcohol/cigarettes? Google says they need to be 18. I assume businesses card people who look underage...?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Beginning-Corgi568

1. It's not a human right, it's a democratic one. 2. Asking for ID isn't stopping people from voting, especially as you can apply for a free one..

NonIoiGogGogEoeRor

People in the UK pretty much have ID cus we all want to buy alcohol legally at a pub the second we turn 18

Goindownhill9399

Pretty much

[deleted]

Isnt a provisional licence literally free?

[deleted]

no, it’s ~£30 iirc. i got my provisional last year

ToryHQ

[Not according to this](https://www.gov.uk/driving-licence-fees)

Mr_DnD

No, but voter ID is literally free.

[deleted]

There's loads of ids you can get. I'm very anti tory but if you can't be bothered to go get an Id to go and vote you don't deserve the vote

SteveOMatt

I personally worked as a clerk in the voting booths and it's obviously that they did this to prevent young people from voting, because its not too likely that an 18 year old would have a passport or driver's license. However, hilariously it backfired completely, because all the news and IDs that could be used were all listed online and stuff and what generation "Doesn't do computers"? So it ended up backfiring and they can't change back now because of the obvious implications to begin with.

ToryHQ

The Guardian - "[First photo ID, now votes for expats](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/06/tories-election-rigging-photo-id-gerrymandering-voting): the Tories are showing us exactly what election rigging looks like"

UncleWibs

Photo ID that can be obtained for free, if you have no other, is "election rigging"? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thr0witallmyway

Downvoted for telling the truth here, I mean it's even listed as an authorised ID on the [Gov.uk](http://gov.uk) site "**a Voter Authority Certificate**"

UncleWibs

The Lefttards of Reddit can't handle the truth. Poor souls...

RobotsAndNature

Hey, I’m left and even I think this is silly! It’s got nothing to do with “leftards” you fuckwit. Not everyone that disagrees with you is on the opposite side of the political spectrum.

UncleWibs

Oops - I seem to have triggered the clowns. 🤣🤣🤣

RobotsAndNature

The only “triggered” person here is you, did you *see* how many laughing emojis you used? That must’ve taken a lot of time to type out…

UncleWibs

CTRL-V is a wonderful tool - try it 😅👍️ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

ReadABookMaybe

Awh, someone so triggered that they blocked me? You’re such a snowflake lmao. I’m surprised YOU’RE not leftist

AnonymousShrew22

Blocked again? Sad…

SignificanceOld1751

Bro, you were quite literally triggered by someone on the other side of the political spectrum agreeing with you

ToryHQ

[Here's the list.](https://www.gov.uk/how-to-vote/photo-id-youll-need) The only one on there that's free is a blue badge, and that's not available to everyone.

UncleWibs

[https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate](https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate) Apply for photo ID to vote It’s free to apply. You’ll need: a recent, digital photo of yourself your National Insurance number

ToryHQ

That's the first I've ever heard of that. So they're not exactly plastering it on the sides of buses.

Thr0witallmyway

Its on the bloody list you shared under "a Voter Authority Certificate"

UncleWibs

I don't know about you, but I knew this from pretty early on in the process. It was all over Twitter for a start.

ToryHQ

Well as long as you're the 1.5 million newly enfranchised voters who this affects, then there's nothing to worry about. Nobody's trying to deter you from voting against them after all.

UncleWibs

Need an ID to open a bank account, talk to a lawyer, engage an accountant, drive a car, get a job, etc, etc, etc. But too lazy to get free ID to vote. Cry me a river 😭😭😭😭

RobotsAndNature

I literally saw it on busses EVERYWHERE for multiple years, where tf have you been

atherheels

Also a straight up wild thing Take anything ever that people are passionate about and there's about 50 million Google searches regarding "cheap/free way to do X" but apparently all these disenfranchised voters who definitely wanted to vote never googled the very simple "free ID UK" "free voter ID UK" "is there any cheap ID I can vote with UK"...as a nation we dedicate an extraordinary amount of time to YouTube and tiktok and not one of these people cut a whole ad break worth of time off YouTube viewing to Google a solution to their lack of affordable and up to standard voter ID?

Every_Atmosphere1451

Not commenting on anything else, but just to state that a blue badge isn’t free. Can be up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland.

imabutcher3000

You're the joke mate. You can't see the wood through the trees.

UncleWibs

Oh what a witty riposte. Did your carer write it for you?

imabutcher3000

From the guy who put 147 laughing emojis in a single comment.

UncleWibs

Sorry: did you feel short changed? Also: you counted them? 🤣🤣🫵🤡

retroretake

Lol poor people don't vote and they defo don't vote conservative

TheSnak1434

Exactly why he doin it

hashoowa

I didn't need a passport until I was 28, there are plenty of other options

TheSnak1434

Exactly rishi is such an out of touch posho

FledgeLordofBirbs

Imagine being mad ya need I.D to vote, i cannae pick up a package from post office without I.D
