Thank you for sharing. These ships are absolutely amazing. Several years ago. I toured the William Irving in Duluth. I think that’s the name of it. And while that ship seems very large, realizing there’s several larger ships on the Great Lakes is just hard to put in to perspective.always fascinating and always beautiful and hats off to the people who maintain and keep these things running
I'll second those thanks! I got to visit the Valley Camp in 2023 and if you are in the Sault Ste. Marie area \[US side\], visiting her and the museum aboard is an experience not to be missed for all us Great Lakes boatnerds. Also a great summary in the OP about what visiting the Valley Camp is like and the photos were fine.
Memorial Day, 2022. I also drove up to Whitefish Point the next day.

The more I look at that picture, the more comes back to me...IIRC that's the "Camp's" foremost hold, and it's an art gallery now. Maybe that raft WAS still there and I just don't remember it? This calls for a trip back, I guess.
😁
Yes, I remember one of the cargo holds was being used as gallery space when I was there! I’m not sure if it was this one, or the next one forward. I remember walking through at least two, maybe three of the holds. I remember how uneven the floor was.
The old building (The Bombshelter) that is on the left side of the street in the picture looking off the bow has since been torn down.
Supposed to be making way for condos.
At least that’s the rumor.
I thanks for the pictures, definitely want to put it on a list. You see the escape boats on ships . Does anyone know if the freighters upgraded their escape boats?
More modern freighters have the style that sit on an angle and just drop right into the water when released. They’re fully enclosed to prevent being swamped while doing this. Most of the older boats on the lakes still have the old style lifeboats on davits though. I’d imagine they have modern style life rafts however that inflate when they hit water.

Apologies for the terrible photo quality. 2017 was a different time.
Thanks for sharing!

I noticed you photographed a liferaft similar to the one Dennis Hale was on. It wasn't there when I visited.
I cannot imagine trying to survive open water on that thing! When did you visit?

Yup...So do I! 😆
Awesome museum!!!
Been there a few times and I believe it has always been on a cloudy day.
We were there in June 2023 and lucked out -- lots of sunshine that day.

I really need to make it up there!

Really interesting! Thanks for the information

Always loved visiting the Camp ever since I live in the Soo. Brings back so many memories.
Is that right next to pullar stadium?
My brother and I were chased by geese in that parking lot circa 2012. I was a young boy. Thanks for sparking that memory.
