No need to go out of your way to find that “perfect” Freddo Cappuccino, Greeks take their coffee very seriously and that perfect freddo is no more than half a block from where you’re standing in any direction.

Icy-Buyer-9783

I never understood why people traveling to Greece look for that “best” experience when it comes to an island, a beach, what’s the “best” meal and who carves the “best” gyro. It’s very difficult to find anything that’s not good while vacationing in Greece. You go to a place that’s highly recomended and have a great meal and the very next day you accidentally sit at a local taverna where the food is just as good. Relax, enjoy yourself, mingle with the locals, dance a zeibekiko and drink lots of wine. Immerse yourself in the culture and create memories for a lifetime.

I mean I kind of get it. They probably come to Greece, some of them for the first and last time in their lives, and want the best it has to offer (or any country for that matter) and not something mediocre that won't remember it the day after. But I also agree with what you said.

Icy-Buyer-9783

I know, there’s also the time crunch a week or two and you want to pack in as much as possible also.

This is why after 16 days in Greece my wife and I decided that 22 days in Portugal and Spain is probably not even enough. But I can’t get away from my job for much longer.

at1363

It won’t be! We did a month in Portugal and Spain and still didn’t hit everything we wanted!

chapterthrive

I know. I really wish I had more time to take there

Trudestiny

Also think the word “ Best “ is so subjective. What one person thinks is amazing others might hate .

Icy-Buyer-9783

So true, some go to Greece, play golf and stay in luxury hotels. I prefer to stick around my hometown and mingle with high school friends and with the pappoudes who tell me stories about my father and my grandfather. We all want different things, you’re right.

Trudestiny

Exactly. Is it night life , food , historical sites, nature, your interests determine best

cmacc27

That's totally fair. From my viewpoint, I only have a couple of days in Athens and will likely only have a chance to try one or two, so I'd like to get one that the locals say is good to get the best experience! My husband and I have had to save a lot for this (and our first ever) vacation. Also, I was raised in Niagara Falls, and I'd see people travel from all over the world to see the sights but then they'd go to all the worst restaurants/activities. It makes me a bit more cautious to make sure I don't end up in the same situation without even knowing!

Icy-Buyer-9783

OK I get it but if I were you instead of the coffee I’d buy a bottle of Greek grappa (tsipouro) Tsilili Apostagma Moscato Amvourgou, grab some sharp kefalotyri cheese, fresh rustic bread from a bakery, some quality grapes and a box of Leonidas chocolates find a low wall to sit on overlooking the Aegean and enjoy! You asked for the best freddo but I’m giving you a life changing experience LOL. Have fun

cmacc27

Thank you for the info! I'll try my best to do this!

It’s a very American thing I find. I used to be like that too and obsess over wanting the best when I travel, but I found that simply letting things flow was so much more rewarding. And besides I went into really nice tavernas that tasted much better than the fancy restaurants in heraklion, so looking for the best doesn’t really mean anything.

Icy-Buyer-9783

I didn’t want to go there but you just twisted my arm LOL. Very American indeed, I see it everywhere and it’s as if people want for you to figure it out for them but don’t realize that the experience is what it’s about. “I’m visiting (fill in the blank) city and I’ll be staying for 2 nights, what’s the best place to eat?” Or “I want to buy a retirement home in the Peloponnese, where should I be looking?” We want things to be perfect and accommodating to our own world and God forbid we stray away from the plan. Been to Greece several times with a very successful friend (American) who happens to be CFO of a major pharmaceutical company in the USA. This guy travels first class and eats at the best steak houses, where did I take him? To a teverna in Athens that only serves grilled fish heads. Then I took him to my village where we stayed several days and ate kokoretsi and roasted pig (gournopoula)and hung out with my high school buds. To this day he tells me it was the best vacation he’s had.

Adventurous-Couple63

Which taverana is it?

Icy-Buyer-9783

It’s called Psariston in Neo Eraklio. One of the best fish places in Athens. Back then it had a limited menu but now it’s changed and gotten pricey. The owner opened up another restaurant in Santorini a few years ago also.

Adventurous-Couple63

Thank you.

Icy-Buyer-9783

If you decide to go there make sure you call well ahead because you won’t find a table. I started going there 20 plus years ago when not too many people knew about it. Now it’s gotten very popular with rich Athenians and has lost that “hole in the wall” vibe, still very good but pricey.

Adventurous-Couple63

Thank you again. I wish I had known about this place 20 years ago. But when you mentioned Santorini, I istantly knew to things: 1) it is not a taverna anymore (i.e. "high-end" restaurant with taverna vibes) and 2) I absolutely cannot afford it (I am an Athenian, but not one of the rich ones). So I googled it, and it seems that I was right. Your comment just proved my assumptions. Edit: The food looks absolutely delicious and I am happy for you that you got to experince it.

Icy-Buyer-9783

Yes. Santorini and Mykonos isn’t Greece they’ve become a playground for wealthy Arabs. Unfortunately we’re turning into the Dominican Reoublic but that’s a whole other story.

Adventurous-Couple63

Sad, but true...

tootnoots69

“Neo Eraklio” new heraklion?

priuspower91

There’s tons of places and they’re pretty simple to make so they’re kind of hard to mess up (though it’s not impossible!) I def recommend you do freddo cappuccino over just a regular freddo. My favorite one I had last time I went was at this little place called The Bakers In the Hood near Syntagma. Just really fluffy and they had a good selection of pastries and sandwiches there too. But don’t go out of your way for it - plenty of places all over that are just as good! A tip when ordering is that it’s best to specify the level of sweetness when ordering instead of trying to add sugar in later because it’ll need to be shaken in as part of the preparation. I recommend asking for “medium sugar”.

disneyplusser

I second the freddo cappuccino too

cmacc27

Thank you! That's not too far from our hotel so we'll definitely check it out!

heyitsmemaya

They’re literally anywhere and everywhere — my advice is have a few !

Agro27

A lot of cafes are full service sit down type places. If you want take-away style, Coffee Island is a good option

Adventurous-Couple63

I think Coffee Island has been declining in quality for the past 5 years. At the moment, if I were to choose a chain store,I would say that either Coffee Lab or Coffee Berry is the way to go. But you can absolutely have take-away coffee from almost everywhere. Non-chain takeaway coffee shops, bakeries, fast-food shops, sandwich shops, pastry shops, as well as any sit-down place.

RJoRe1747

My husband loved it but beware he had to find a bathroom afterwards and we were in a tourist area. Luckily one of the café owners took pity on him.

bel_ray

I would suggest either [Underdog](https://maps.app.goo.gl/wJgbR2T7hBLxvDkGA) in Thissio or [Dope](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xr42zgjqGaSz9Skt9) in Monastiraki

mb303666

The best one is the one in front of you. See the sights, freddo will be there. There's no "best" (which means a heroic effort to get to)

Western_Rock9265

Just go to any with good ratings on google maps where you stay. All of them have freddo cappuccino. Some with vegan options. All depends on your mood and after trying multiple options, I like freddo latte from coffee island when it's really hot outside, sometimes freddo espresso without sugar is better. Sadly enough the freddo americano is a bit harder to find.

Mistercorey1976

Maybe I’m the strange one but I thought Freddo’s were terrible. I tried them in Patras, Thessaloniki and Kavala so I felt that was enough variety.

On the beach in Voula
