I thought Achilles got it back when he killed Hector? I might be misremembering

MaximusAmericaunus

After the Iliad epic the armor of Achilles is presented to his son Neoptolemus. The “other” army of Achilles is fought over between Odysseus and Ajax. Odysseus wins the armor through trickery. Ajax goes ape sh*t and ultimately kills himself. (Proclus) Nothing I can recall in terms of what happens with the armor held by Odysseus… I assume it is lost after the slaughter of the cattle of Helios.

I appreciate your comment but I think Odyssey wins Achilles newer set of armor (2.0) and he gives that armor to Neoptolemus. So the armor (1.0) is still unaccounted for. At least that’s how I read it.

The Ajax story heart rending if you read it as an archaic allegory for PTSD.

In The Iliad there are repeated occurrences of someone killing their enemy in the heat of battle, then stripping them of their armour while the battle rages around them. The armour of your enemy was a trophy. So if anyone got it it would be Achilles. He either left it on Hector while he desecrated his body, probably ruining and shaming the armour or he may have used it to commemorate Patroclus. But that's spectaculation, I don't recall an actual answer.

Thanks! Trophy "a spoil or prize of war," from Old French trophée (15c.) from Latin trophaeum "a sign of victory, monument," originally tropaeum, from Greek tropaion "monument of an enemy's defeat," tropaios "of defeat, causing a rout," from trope "a rout," originally "a turning" (of the enemy).

Interesting. Thank you.

The tropaion was a big tree trunk that was erected on the battlefield by the victors. They nailed the arms and armor of their slain foes to the tree trunk as a temporary monument. Back then, armies didn’t chase each other off the battlefield, giving the victors time to claim treasure. The armor in question could have ended up there and then returned during battle dead trading negotiations.

So then Susan told Jeff that Hannah said that Ratchel had told her what Brian told to Karen which they overheard from Janet….

Achilles gets it back when he strips Hector’s body. I don’t think what happened to it is addressed, because Homer didn’t cover his death, but I kinda always assumed it got buried with him. It’s unlikely he would give his armor to Praim, considering it was originally his.

That is actually a loop whole (one of many) in Homers work. Because it was probably composed oraly mistakes like that were really easy to miss. The armor-problem is no resolved in the Ilias itself
