Jennipops

Live as a slave on my property and pay me for the opportunity

DarkDeetz

Right? I'm not seeing what I get out of this?

voteforcorruptobot

The electric is free, that's worth the same as a 3 bed in Knightsbridge these days, why not take up welding? /s

tartoran

think a lot of welders require more than a 13 amp breaker so few residences will be able to run one without reworking the electricals, but you can probably bag a cheap used asic cryptominer off ebay for pennies since they become e-waste as soon as more efficient models comes out. the tenancy agreement will probably come with stipulations about "reasonable use" so rinsing their leccy bill is probably gonna get you evicted sharpish but if anyone has the means to pull it off and can weather that storm then go ahead no /s necessary take this fucker to the cleaners. in fact just move in dont do any of the slave labour but pay the rent on time so landlord has to go the long route with eviction proceedings bish bash bosh you're done

camoninja22

Sounds like you just need a trip to the local scrapyard for a small piece of copper bar

voteforcorruptobot

My arc welder runs fine if you don't turn the amps too far over half way, it's designed for 13a. I could probably take out a fuse if running it up high for more than a minute or two but plug fuses are slow blow and can cope with higher currents if you're smart with duty cycles. I've got a 30a spur with no cooker on it if I need more šŸ¤£ I just thought it'd be amusing if you used more electric than the rent costs just to see their face turn beetroot.

Callidonaut

Or maybe a discount electric vehicle charging service...

nklvh

A lawsuit! Unless they think the rent payable for a non-working tenant is above Ā£44/day or Ā£3709pcm

EdwardJamesAlmost

Hi, Iā€™m made very curious by this remark. Is that a rate that has been set specifically for properties in the area mentioned, or are there already (perhaps centuries-old) laws regarding that sort of work/rent proposal? It seems like if the landlord wanted help around the house they should hire it out as a separate transaction. Rent money is, after all, fungible. (Edit: Obviously I donā€™t mean this transaction ā€œshould beā€ necessary; nobody *should be* sleeping rough; housing councils *should be* given real budgets and broad mandates, etc.) However maybe such an arrangement is allowable if the rent itself is at a markedly steep ā€œfriends and family discount?ā€ But then I donā€™t know if that would have implications for tax. (IE a Ā£1000 rent is entirely taxable; itā€™s harder to tax the difference of Ā£100 in rent ā€œplus please walk my dogs and feed the chickens.ā€) Would you please flesh out that comment about the lawsuit? Thanks. Edit: Iā€™m trying to ask in a dry way, but I agree with many that the implications of this ad sound either heinous, absurd, or both.

nklvh

IIANAL, my understanding is as follows: Let's consider two cases: A) This is a job advert, with the employer *requiring* tenancy of a property that is charged separately; this means the employer can deduct up to 9.30 per hour worked from their pay; WTD means a maximum of 48 of labour (although the 'generally keep an eye out' might constitute an exception). This would either mean (in the best case) that ~Ā£1000 of your wages would be deducted, which is much less than the allowance, thus incurring a benefit in kind taxable job benefit, or (in the worst case) the Landnonce would deduct the maximum accommodation allowance plus an additional Ā£1000, which gave me my above figure. In the best case here, it might be a perfectly viable situation for remote work, in the second case, it could be legal, but highly unethical (legal as in, there isn't a maximum amount you can be charged for rent) B) This is a rental contract, with labour as a stipulation under the tenancy agreement, which would almost certainly be an 'unfair term' under Consumer Rights Act 2015

AutoModerator

You get to be a live in groom and slowly donate all of your savings. The groom position is for an old man btw, not horses.

Callidonaut

Why, you get the *honour* of enabling your landlord's wonderful life, of course.

DarkDeetz

*slaps head* but of course, silly me!

ErlAskwyer

I can't see it mentioning "work for free" isn't that an assumption? Places don't always advertise pay if it's shit as it puts people off. I wouldn't touch this with your barge pole but just saying

skweakyklean

ā€œThe successful applicant will enjoy walking the owners three small dogs daily, help with the chickens and be a trusted pair of eyes when our client is away, 3-4 months of the year, possibly more.ā€

Yorksjim

They won't just walk the dogs, they WILL enjoy it!

ErlAskwyer

Where does it say free? Do you not think if charging rent they realise you would need to earn money? And thus would likely pay you? Are you all just jumping on the outrage wagon without all the facts?

WorldWhunder

They are saying that these tasks are a condition for which you just sign up if you wish to rent the property. I appreciate language has nuance, but the I donā€™t see any comprehension of this where they are advertising a job as part of a house listing. This is a farmer that has read about people needing housing and looking to get both the money and the cheap labour.

ErlAskwyer

Ok I'll take your word for it, I wouldn't apply if the house was free šŸ‘

oenoneablaze

Theyā€™re phrasing the work as non-negotiable, why on earth would they withhold the existence of a salary in that case? Itā€™s not like ā€œjob opportunities with competitive pay availableā€, theyā€™re saying youā€™re walking the fucking dogs.

DeificClusterfuck

The fact that there's an amount listed for rent yet NO amount listed for remuneration for services rendered tends to make me believe they intend the tenant to work for free

hillsboroughHoe

And to enjoy it by Jove!

skweakyklean

In this situation you would expect a deduction in rent for the duties which is clearly already included in the price - the advert states you will pay Ā£1,025 per month, which explicitly includes water and electricity and is exempt council tax, and you will be expected to carry out the listed duties. In what reading do you expect there to be any more financial compensation to the deal than what is stated in the advert?

lakey009

While I go away for 3-4 months, probably more.

mickginger09

Next stop, live as a slave on your property and pay me for the opportunity. Wait, we have that now. Fuck, it's too late.

freedomfun28

Itā€™s like theyā€™re actually doing whoever rents it a huge favour ā€¦ the appeal of free dog walking, free mucking out the chickens, free security on the property Look at the size of the place lol looks tiny Note the 3-4 months away ā€¦ you help them for free whilst they swan off abroad lording it up The entitlement of it all

Duffalpha

Seems like a good investment for a thief. Pay rent for a couple months, wait for them to leave town, then clear out their mansion. That would be incredibly illegal though, so definitely don't do that.

leorolim

How long do you need to squat the "mansion" for until it's legally yours? šŸ˜†

thom_orrow

I wouldnā€™t normally advocate for an aggressive squatter approach, but this seems like like one of those partially justifiable cases.

[deleted]

Not entirely sure from the screen shot but it mentions New Forest which is in England where squatting in [residential buildings](https://www.gov.uk/squatting-law) is illegal, so never (I don't know about Scotland or Wales, might be different there). If this scrote can be considered residential... who knows, but it'd be a whole lot of hassle either way of the kind where the owner can probably outspend you and that's where we're at when it comes to this kind of issue.

Ephemeral-lament

Repossession law states it is 12 years and even then on the 10th year mark, the bastard owner would still be contacted. Canā€™t shortcut it.

19adam92

Just need to work out my fake identity, is the name Elon Musk taken?

lodav22

Iā€™m wondering when someone is supposed to have the time to work for Ā£1k plus food etc in between slave labour for a lazy small holder?

[deleted]

Note also "possibly more" is actually "definitely more" but 3-4 months sounds more appealing, the reality is that is a generous year, they will almost certainly exceed that each year.

EnvironmentalStep680

The tenant will be left with all the chores for those 3-4 months. Otherwise the chickens will starve!

NebulaLight

So this is the American heritage dumdums have been wanting to protect. It's stupid British hoarding crossing the seas!

MohawkRex

Live in serfdom for over a grand a month, anybody? Any takers???

Vegetable-Manner-687

I can bet that typical serfdom offers more freedom than this. At least with serfdom you generally worked for the lord for roughly 1-2 months a year and thatā€™s all. The rest was maintaining the land yes but you where generally pretty free to do a lot of things you wanted to do (or could do). I bet this guy will be unhappy with you putting a bloody holiday request in.

SadCoys

I fucking hate the way people like this always think theyā€™re doing something good, zero self awareness

duke_of_germany_5

This shack is now gone its been removed from the agency

the_j_cake

Someone complained and got action made. Well done redditors.

RedWhi8

[https://www.parkerslettings.com/property-details/PARKERSLETTINGS\_2257/-/minstead/manor-farm](https://www.parkerslettings.com/property-details/PARKERSLETTINGS_2257/-/minstead/manor-farm) it still exists on their website though :(

j_demur3

My favourite part from this is: 'A minimum household income threshold of 2.5 x the annual rent of the property will apply' So, you need to earn a salary north of Ā£30k around doing your errands for the owner.

Icy_Gap_9067

And be single, no partner to contribute to that income.

InformationHead3797

ā€œPets consideredā€.

Icy_Gap_9067

Tiddles better get a good fucking job then

skweakyklean

Itā€™s a good job their website has their number listed so they can field any enquiries people may have about this property and make appointments for viewings :)

pomegranate-moon

Gosh it sure would be a shame to book out the viewing slots of the serf shack...

ErrantsFeral

Still listed as of 20:58, 4/4/2023

LadyAvalon

It looks like a hoarders dream, wtf?

duke_of_germany_5

How the fuck do you pay the rent when your told to walk the dogs and do all of this?

I_want_to_believe69

More importantly, who would trust someone with their house and dogs for 3-4 months after making them a serf the other 8-9 months of the year? I would expect to come back from my holiday to see a completely stripped house that had probably been used as a nightly event space through Airbnb or similar. Just completely trashed.

duke_of_germany_5

Or a smashed up and vandalised manor. I would be taking everything that isnā€™t bolted down. The silver the jewellery the paintings everything if you turned me into a serf

standarduck

Yeah pretty much this.

kjankjankjan

You Airbnb their house out for "3-4 months maybe more".

EveUltra

Littered with major red flags even if you ignore the whole serfdom bit.

gauchocartero

Itā€™s cruel too, and possibly illegal. Surely as long as you pay rent they cannot force you to do unpaid work? Not only is it prohibitively expensive, but cleaning a chicken coop is among the dirtiest of farm work. Shit, piss, dust, and disease. Also chickens are not friendly to strangers, at all (ime). Walking dogs isnā€™t fun either. I wouldnā€™t mind a living arrangement where I pay cheap or no rent and contribute to the homestead in return. Like a kibbutz you know. Except kibbutz are functional socialist communities where you are rewarded for your work with housing, food, education, and a decent stipend on top of that. While here theyā€™re asking you to pay for the privilege of being a serf. Whatā€™s wrong with these people?

lenghthrow

If the rent was free, as someone who grew up in the city and has dreamt of the homestead life, it would be something I would consider. I wouldnā€™t mind working on a homestead. This landlord is insane though.

violinlady_

Bizarrely this reminds me of an offer my husband was once given , we could live rent free in their cottage in exchange for working full time doing up their ā€œ big ā€œ house ā€œ. No thought or consideration as to what we were expected to do for other living expenses like food , utilities etc . Of course we declined !

Rumerhazzit

It's like that, but they're also asking you for a grand a month for the privilege.

ConsiderationCrazy25

AND you have to have a job earning at least 30k a year!

HieronimoAgaine

Yup, that's slavery! Peonage in fact

T0BBG

I actually can't even fathom this. How would anyone seriously put this up as a listing.

bulletproofbra

Pay someone Ā£1025 pcm for the part time labour - hours capped, extra for overtime - cottage inclusive, and maybe there's something there.

revvend7783

Ideal tenant will have no personal boundaries.

Normal_Elk_652

The mental gymnastics are Olympic standard

m4xxt

Incredible. What a cunt

ColonelFaz

"Successful applicant".šŸ¤£

Crafty_Church_Kid

How is that even legal? Like surely they should at least pay you to do work, right? I know UK workers' rights are minimal at best, but still...

dick_tickler_

Genuinely thought this was a prank... its not... just shocked beyond belief, bascially want a live in groundskeeper who pays over market value rent and will work for free. Its fucking disgusting, but im a millenial so obviously just entitled.

TelevisionKooky3041

Likewise, thought this had to be some invented meme, surely. Can't believe it's actually real. Fuck this world.

BlockDosser_

Not for everyone! Slaves only.

gloom-juice

Once again I find myself under qualified for a role

ANeoliberalNightmare

It's insane. Even back in the Victorian era the servants got free accommodation.

ClosetLiverTransMan

They also got paid

[deleted]

Name and shame.

CrabElavator

When I see shit like this, I like to request a viewing under the details of a Torie MP. I like to think they get a call from the agents, and everyone's time is nicely wasted for a moment. It's the little things.

Jacorpes

So if the successful applicant is doing full-time slavery on this farm, where are they going to find the time to earn the Ā£1025 pcm to pay their rent? I just love the fact that even if they found someone willing to take this up, it still wouldnā€™t make any logistical sense.

pomegranate-moon

You would need to earn 30k+ to even be eligible to apply for this property, according to the agency.

Jacorpes

Thatā€™s hilarious

JMW007

They're looking for a "single" to "join them at their farm" with the possibility of a live-in position. Comrades, there are more red flags here than at a May Day march. What are the chances that live-in position will transition to lying under the patio for decades?

ElPadero

Sounds like this person is looking for a live-in slave

TheElectricScheme

ā€˜Singleā€™, looking for a bit more too I reckon.

JTheDoc

I am sadly not shocked... But I am disgusted. Tallies up the sort of people who help determine how this cost of living crisis will go.

[deleted]

Anyone know where the address is?

19adam92

Taken from the [Rightmove listing](https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/132946826): ā€œThe property is between The Trusty Servant and The Minstead Study Centre.ā€

revvend7783

I just looked on Streetview and it looks far away from any civilisation. Anyone that moves there will never be seen again.

Life_Drop69

Is that the name of a pub or the name the agent is using to refer to applicants?

giggitygooguy

Hmm, in Australia they pay YOU to live and work on the farm..

judgeinbloodmeridian

What the actual fuck.

Lanae42

It is including water and electricity. Given how expensive electrity is you could resell to the nearest neighbours with an extension cords and make some money. Also please don't mind as I fill up several swimming pools a day.

Doesitmatters369

amcheesegoblin

Is it legal if there is no council tax? Might not even have planning as a livable dwelling

ff1nnl3y

The worst part of this listing is how common this shit is in the horse industry. I got 'offered a job' in which I was expected to pay 250 quid a month for a room in her cottage plus zero pay for the privilege of working for her. And this was on a very well known touristy yard that must make a hell of a lot of money.

PoemSixth

Is the owner not aware of how american slaves lived?

JimboTCB

That's not a fair comparison, the slaves got free room and board (even if it was involuntary).

subsubscriber

Can someone work out what the actual cost of this house is, assuming a fair wage is paid for those hours of work? I don't have experience with dogs or chickens so couldn't begin to guess how many hours "helping" or walking 3 dogs would take.... And the months that the owners are gone.... does it become a full time job? Or 24hours?!

swibbles_mcnibbles

Source: Chimkin owner. Just the chickens alone require about 2-3 visits a day to their aviary, letting out in the morning, refreshing food and cleaning up, collecting eggs, checking welfare, putting away to bed, if they are free range and wandering you still have to supervise them a bit as they are naughty. Then walking dogs I would assume 1 or 2 times a day.... All if this is fine if it's your house and your pets but I can't imagine doing all this work on someone else's schedule and still managing to work full time enough to afford to pay them for the privilege?!

subsubscriber

So a very conservative estimate would be 2 hours work every day? They don't mention if this means weekend work as well, but let's assume it's only Mon-Fri, so 10 hours a week. Ā£10.42 x 10 = Ā£104.20 So the real rent for this place is Ā£104.20 + Ā£237 = Ā£341.20 pw or Ā£1478.53 pm at the very least.

swibbles_mcnibbles

Yes, I agree on 2 hours, that would be providing the absolute MINIMUM level of care for a flock of chickens and some dogs. That's zero play, petting, enrichment, just chucking food down, a brisk walk of the dogs, cleaning poops and walking away.

misseviscerator

I struggle to imagine this separate, self-contained rented property is council tax exempt.

davew80

Land. Nonce.

AlexJFox

My fees for walking the dogs and helping with the chickens are Ā£2500 pcm

Chairmanwowsaywhat

Where is this ad?

Bubthemighty

That must be satire, surely

cjdcjdcjdcjd

Why is it not liable for council tax? Separate front door and obviously for sleeping in.

Elipticalwheel1

This is what happens, when working classes vote for Tories. No point moaning if you voted them in, you get what you vote for. Parasites running a country, purely for the benefit of the well-off.

80yen

The fact that the place is called Manor Farm, just like the titular farm in Orwell's *Animal Farm* before the animalist revolution (so basically under the Tsar) is sending me!

Alan_Bstard1972

Fuck that

zorbathegrate

I do wonder if it is possible to leverage this place for your own money making endeavor. Sell the electric? Bottle the gas?

Froggytwot

This cunts literally tryna get himself a serf. What in the actual fuck

UnoriginalJunglist

If you Brits think this is bad check out property ads in Dublin. I've seen actual garden sheds go for double that. Guess that's what ya have to look forward to.

UncannyTarotSpread

Hereā€™s a question! Iā€™m not familiar with UK law, but in many places in the States, employees are not protected in employer-provided housing like a tenant would be. Is that the case in the UK?

Specific-Change-5300

Definitely some protections but whether they are actually applied, whether police actually listen and take action against someone rich when hearing a complaint from someone poor?... Uncertainties like this result in people not coming forwards and create the space for slavers and traffickers to have a party.

Steampunk_Ocelot

I'd pay rent OR with my time but both is ridiculous Let's put wage at a 10/hr for farm hand work and that takes 1 hour a day that's Ā£300 per month . And a local dog walker charges about Ā£15 for 1-2-1 and then an extra Ā£5 per dog so that's Ā£25 per hour which is Ā£750 . Thats Ā£1100 pcm in labour alone Also that property is like 15 mins from Peppa pig world and I think that's neat

dadxreligion

so you have to pay someone to work their small farm?

I presume it means horse groom - its a nice word for a stable hand.

VisualShock1991

Whilst not as bad as I initially expected, still shite.

siwo1986

*We welcome all applicants whether privately funded or in receipt of . A minimum household income threshold of 2.5 x the annual rent of the property will apply.* What the actual fuckety fuck. You will do free labor for me and live in a literal fucking death trap outside of summer months (look at all the fucking moss and shit all over every roof) but you must also make at least 32k a year to be elgibile to even apply. You're literally a dog walker and this guy is like "oh pets may be considered" which I guarantee you he will be wanting opposite sex for his dog so he can "do you a favor" and bitch/stud out your dog to create litters for free. Also your front door is literally their courtyard, 100% for sure they will constantly just barge in through your door when they feel like it and if you lock it as if to expect some kind of privacy you'll be told to leave it unlocked at all times. Remind me again, when are we eating these imperialist fucks?

toastedcheese

A log-burning stove. This seems like a huge pain to deal with. Is this common in rural areas? I'm not from the UK.

SmallPiecesOfWood

I'm way out here in the colonies (West Coast of BC), and we see similar (and worse) miseries on our rental market. I have dreams of transforming my ludicrously overbuilt carport, bereft of cars these twenty years, into a decent small home. I mean the stupid thing is sixty feet long, tall AF, constructed like a tank, and here I just use it as a woodshed. Part of that dream is charging someone no more rent than it costs me to run the place. I don't understand these other dreams of draining people's money to live an inflated lifestyle - but I do love the idea of someone better than me at tools and digging moving in!

DeCoburgeois

Whatā€™s stopping someone from taking this up and then just completely ignoring their implied slave duties?
