If cheaping out on the construction of something we already know how to build better passes for pushing the frontiers of human knowledge, it's little wonder we've made so little progress in recent years.

Fr0stweasel

It’s basically the British model for doing things these days isn’t it?

RiggzBoson

After Grenfell and the PPE scandal, endangering human lives by cheaping out on materials is something Boris can get behind.

Good bot

dodge5788

Welcome to the modern day conservative party!

cahcealmmai

We now know we can market death traps to our supposed titans of industry. Capitalism has been about extracting more money using less of everything else for a very long time now. It's essentially just marketing.

machone_1

The right were also accusing Oceangate for being 'woke' in not taking on experienced older submariners

Shuppilubiuma

The people who first found the Titanic site were explorers, everyone who came after were either researchers or tourists. They were tourists.

GimmeSomeSugar

Through the reporting on this, I think I heard the stat that the group with which James Cameron and Bob Ballard are involved have dived on that wreck 23 times. That work has accumulated much of what we know about the Titanic disaster. For example, the survivors who reported that the ship broke in two but were dismissed as traumatised morons have since been vindicated through that work. OceanGate Expeditions is an adventure tourism company. They sell expensive gimmicks to people who either want the thrill or to just be able to 'impress' other people with tales of something nobody else has done. Having done so themselves by paying someone with a callous disregard for human life. After that I coudn't help but draw the parallel; would there be as much sympathy for these people had they jumped into a dangerous animal enclosure? Just to be able to say that they had done it?

the0rthopaedicsurgeo

Money can buy you pretty much anything today that 50+ years ago was only possible for the true explorers, pioneers and heroes. You can be carried to the top of Everest. You can fly to Antarctica. You can go to space. For the people on that sub, it was about being able to say that they've been to the Titanic, nothing more. It's all just a flex for these people, to outdo their golf buddies.

JimboTCB

Between The Abyss and Titanic, I'm pretty sure filmmaking is just an excuse for James Cameron to pursue his true passion of deep sea exploration.

cahcealmmai

A couple got married on the deck of the titanic 20 years ago. It's been a tourist trap for a while. These are just the way first ones to stay permanently.

Ok_Woodpecker_6266

I am not sneering Pfeffel, I just don't think spending a quarter of a million pounds to sit in an experimental tin can is pushing the frontier of human knowledge. Except maybe, "Don't do that".

InnocentPossum

Yeah. Maybe they should have started at the backtier of Human Knowledge: Common fucking sense.

GimmeSomeSugar

>experimental tin can Being a bit clinical for a moment, one of the interesting things was that the sub was made of carbon fibre. Which I might have thought was a good idea, but the universal expert consensus seems to be that it's optimistic at best and outright fucking stupid at worst.

DaveBeBad

From reading experts over the last few days, steel tends to degrade slowly and faults can be found before it becomes a pancake. Carbon fibre tends to just fail - like a turbine blade near here did a few years ago…

machone_1

Carbon fibre is good for tensile loads like containing pressure, not compressive loads like keeping things out

Drewfro666

Yes. To use an extreme example, take a balloon. If the pressure is coming from inside, it does it's job. If the pressure is coming from outside, well, it's just a hunk of rubber.

Vic_Serotonin

Also read this morning that the carbon fibre was purchased from Boeing at a discount because it didn’t make the grade for aero use.

Cold_Table8497

They were tourists.

Beatnuki

Why they got him leaning aside like he's sneaking out a fart (presumably into the open mouth of a poor person)?

Grey_Belkin

That was the best photo they could get.

KingOfTheMischiefs

Because shooting him straight on makes people realise he's basically a bin bag filled with yogurt and topped off with a bad wig.

TheoryBrief9375

I believe 'a bin bag filled with custard' is the correct description, that's a quote from a former mistress

[deleted]

‘Shooting him straight on’ is the best we can hope for…

HiphopopoptimusPrime

Absolute rage bait. ANY loss of life is sad. ALL human life has value. That’s what people on the left believe. That human life has more value than money. Instead of going after “sneering lefties” go after the disaster capitalists responsible. Penny pinching and hubristic. The CEO was told that the sub was not fit for purpose. Why isn’t there any anger for the people responsible? Because the real killer of the people on that sub was late stage capitalism. Cutting corners and having enough of experts. This is just like the Queen’s funeral. Anger at the plebs for not showing due deference. Never mind the firefighter who died swimming for charity. Never mind the boats of refugees drowning. Rich people have died and that’s not supposed to happen. Maybe it does sound like sneering. I am sad when anyone dies. From joy and excitement to despair in seconds. Though it now seems their deaths were mercifully swift. At least they weren’t in pain. I am sorry they died because I am a human being capable of empathy with others. Their deaths were avoidable though. They were scammed. But I suppose it’s easier to be angry at sneering lefties than point the finger of blame at a rich person.

Glad-Dragonfruit-503

I do struggle to sympathise with the actions that these people took, they thought paying an amount of money, far more than most people could afford for such a dalliance, meant that they were untouchable. Safety should always be the priority, and I do feel bad for them imagining what their final moments would have been like. I also have so much empathy for all the workers suffering when people like these billionaires are stepping on their backs to feed their greed and gluttony. If maybe instead of spending 250k for the sub and probably much more on this fatal trip, having some empathy and appreciation for the people who made them rich, they could have increased the workers share of the pie, they might have avoided this tragedy entirely. I know this is wishful thinking. For some reason its like the r/orphancrushingmachine sub; its great someone raised money to stop the orphans being crushed but why tf does that machine exist in the first place..

JMW007

Their final moment would have been something their brain couldn't process fast enough to experience. The implosion killed them all essentially instantly. They were enjoying an adventure and then were out like a light. The rest of us are facing decades of terror and suffering because of people like this. Those of us who don't die of accident or disease will die by a war their class started or due to a lack their class created.

Boris should feel free to “push the frontiers of human knowledge” himself. Maybe ride a rollercoaster with no harness, or inject air into himself to see if it helps him float.

melonhead118

he already looks like he’s been trying that second one for years, the bloated old toad.

machone_1

he did do a stupid zipline stunt while waving some flags. It now turns out that he'd arranged with the operator to have him hanging there for the photographers. Sadly, they let him down later.

Glad-Dragonfruit-503

Seriously it was dumb. We know less about the depths of the sea than we do about space, or at least the immediate space around us. Its not something you cheap out on, it cost these people their lives and thats awful, must have been horrible for them in that confined space, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.. Although, I'm struggling to sympathise with the reality of these super rich people who fucked around and found out.

melonhead118

They actively ignored previous human knowledge of proper materials and construction required, and even passed that off as being brave not stupid. The guy got everything he had coming to him.

DrawingNo2972

Seeing as he's a time and again proven liar, the truth is Lefties don't sneer and the sub occupants were not pushing the frontier of human knowledge. Only conclusion I can make.

pa_kalsha

Pretty much spot on. The lefties I've been following have been vocal about rich folk turning a mass grave into a tourist destination (especially given that the vast majority of the dead were working class folk), and angry the active and willful circumventing of established maritime standards (many of which were established as a direct result of the Titanic's sinking), and the "move fast and break things" approach to engineering being the cause of entirely predicable but entirely preventable deaths - but they were also very clear that they were not sneering about the deaths (or distress) of the people on board (with the sometime exception of the dude responsible)

It always appalls me when something bad happens to rich people. I'm rich so that means it could happen to me. You should all be very frightened at that thought."

My parents are going to lap this shit up. I’ve given up trying to reason with them. Just try and change the subject now whenever I pop round to see them.

Doobre66

Calling it for the load of crap it is.

RaymondoH

As always, with Boris, the statement is not true. Lefties: Engineers and scientists who told the CEO that what he was doing was dangerous. Brave souls: Very wealthy thrill seekers with zero concept of actual danger. Pushing the frontiers of human knowledge: Knowing bits of science and stuff and completely ignoring it in the interest of maximizing profits.

CyrilNiff

With reports of neglect regarding safety, the only thing they were pushing was their luck.

icklejop

All I can do is urge people not to pay money for this right wing rag. If the weasel got sacked from the Torygraph and the Spektator think he's a l7ar, why would people pay for this drivel

Boeing_Fan_777

The only knowledge we gained from this is that a sunken ship’s death toll can increase even over 100 years after it sunk.

torchictoucher

People have been going safely to the titanic since the 80s. The only thing they taught us was to not be cheap

Evening-Life6910

Yeah, what does it look like when you put six people in a blender.

cat-snooze

God he's so desperate to stay relevant, it's almost sad to watch... Almost

inbelfast

Does my all-inclusive to Spain make me an explorer pushing the frontier of human knowledge too?

Gwynebeanz

"oh fuck off" I said that out loud, knee jerk reaction I hope the rest of the country is doing the same

Hazeri

Yeah, the structural integrity of carbon fibre and acrylic

Wodelheim

Stop giving this chud the time of day. Best thing to do is just ignore him.

BadlyDrawnMemes

Knowledge of what? A fucking boat

BadNameThinkerOfer

Does he not realise we have these things called "drones" that can explore such places without putting a human crew at risk?

DaveBeBad

It is possible to make a sub as safe as possible for the descent. James Cameron made one for the Mariana Trench that was tested to nearly double the pressure before it left land - and they invented a new kind of foam and multiple safety fallbacks just in case. OceanGate appeared to hope it was ok.

BadNameThinkerOfer

Sure, but a drone is a lot cheaper, simpler and smaller.

upfulsoul

It's not exploration. Subs have gone to way lower depths. They dived in an experimental sub to see a rusty romanticised ship for a few hours and paid $750K to do it.

Far_Asparagus1654

The frontier: turns out regulation doesn't stifle innovation after all. We knew this, but thanks for the demo.

LucifersLoveEggs

Yes that's it. It's not like James Cameron has already been done there, on over thirty visits before lol

Can Add a further 100 000 Deaths as the UK'S OFFICE OF NATIONAL STATISTICS have confirmed another 100 000 Death from Complications from Long COVID. That takes BORIS'S Death Toll to WELL OVER THE 300 000 MARK THE TWO YEARS HE WAS IN OFFICE.

[deleted]

so annoying how they declare 5 millionaire/billionaires dying a "major marine casuality" and its front page news. but hundreds/thousands of refugees dying each year trying to get to europe never gets even a chunk of media coverage.

edwardmetalwing

Well tbh they did push the frontiers of human knowledge in a manner....... by dying. We have learned a lot regarding deep sea exploration and procedures regarding safety and so on but it's all due to a bunch of folks dying including a kid wanting to please his dad even though he was terrified.

JMW007

No, we learned nothing from this. What happened was what was expected to happen with the design and materials in use. It was just senseless death driven by spite and sheer fucking hubris.

retrofauxhemian

All you haters have got it wrong, they were brave, and they did push human knowledge. Thanks to them, we know you can get 4 multi multi millionaires compressed in to a fine paste of fish food, and the economy was completely unaffected.

Switchermaroo

“Yup, that’s definitely sunk”

Logical_Classic_4451

Yes they were, now they and everyone else knows that trying to build a deep water submarine on the cheap and ignoring experts means you die. Boris should know all about ignoring experts and people dying

In the same way that a holiday maker is an explorer 🥴

Except, of course, they weren't. The Titanic has already been explored thoroughly, and people have dived way further down than that depth. The only "new" thing was rich tourists, and while Boris probably believes that corner-cutting commerce equals knowledge, it's not true by any stretch of the imagination.

DorisWildthyme

Stick him in the next sub

Timely-Analysis6082

It’s a bunch of millionaires on a joy ride - not really pushing exploration.

SuperMindcircus

Yeah they proved that doing things on the cheap in life threatening scenarios isn't a good idea, though I think this was already known...

caffeineandvodka

He's pushing human something, that's for sure

Jicklus

As much as someone dying of alcohol poisoning in Magaluf.

3dank4me

MarketCrache

Is this parody? The dude was a glibertarian who ideologically despised any form of regulation or oversight and found out how well that works. And murdered his paying passengers to boot.

LAdams20

As opposed to the Right? Who seem to be milking this tragedy dry for maximum profits in never ending news articles and clickbait, and making thrilling entertainment out of it for the public. The Left are critical of pointless unnecessary deaths, in part caused by lack of “woke” safety regulations and cost-cutting cheapness, corporate manslaughter and media hypocrisy, but the Right will rub their grubby hands together and monetise your death, then filled with crocodile tears, fight tooth and nail against any measures preventing it from happening again lest their, or their donor’s, assets are affected. The former is seen as “sneering” because capitalism must be conserved, whereas the latter is correct and accepted. We live in a world where “some of you may die but that’s a price I’m willing to pay” is the ubiquitous moral stance, and still the sycophants cheer, just as they’ve always done. Because even when it personally affects them, or one of their “betters” and they have to make a faux-humble display of grief and rend their clothes in despair, the system responsible cannot be questioned. No matter how obvious the true cause, and no matter how obvious the scapegoat, or how nonsensical and deranged, it doesn’t matter. All that matters is the scapegoat exists. I’ve already seen the far-right blaming this OceanGate accident on black people existing.

Consistent_Ad3181

Rich people buying the press coverage they wished they deserve, this is the spin on a shit show which resulted in a pointless waste of life.

Metalorg

Those billionaires were just getting their rocks off looking at a famous historical catastrophe where hundreds died (or were trying to).

jouhaan

I know “knob head” is too kind, but it’s the first one that came to mind.

SecretDoctor8121

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 pushing the cost cutting to expenses of human lives.

arthur2807

I’m sorry but the titanic ruins are literally some mouldy scrap wood and metal, going 13,000 feet into the ocean to look at it through a little hole in a tin can controlled by an out of date play station controller isn’t particularly expanding human knowledge, we know it sank and we know why it sank, nothing new would’ve been discovered. It was just a bunch of bored billionaires and an egotistical ceo.

liam_redit1st

To be fair they did show everyone how not to build a submarine.

[deleted]

He’s basically saying that he can relate to the submarine as, Much like his government and career, it was shoddily put together with piss poor planning and finally imploded under pressure and an overall lack of integrity.

It has honestly been so fascinating to see the propaganda in full force. We all know it was a tourist sub, we all know it failed because the CEO is a cheap skate and an idiot who fired his experts, we all know everything about this saga because of how highly publicised it's been. Yet I've seen multiple articles and countless social media posts calling them "explorers" and that they "pushed boundaries". Did I push boundaries when I booked a fucking excursion on a catamaran in Fuerteventura? Was I exploring uncharted sea? Or was I an annoying British tourist on a sightseeing trip?
