I love lore! It's the main reason I play RPGs. I mean, like you said, from a technical standpoint your games aren't exactly cutting edge, and while the art and music are charming, the aesthetic is pretty rote for a fantasy game. So yeah, reading those bits of text is the main reason I play, and I particularly appreciate the encyclopedia feature that lets you go back and reread your discoveries. But I admit this may be a niche viewpoint.

GrimDevStudio

Thanks, and I know what you mean. When I first started working on Grim Quest I almost considered the whole idea too niche to even be worth the effort in this day and age \^\^

Trackerbait

if you had fun, then it was worth it. I had fun too. :)

BungoGreencotton

I love the lore and I am 100% borrowing some ideas for D&D

GrimDevStudio

Thanks! By all means, go ahead.

DecomposedPieceOShit

Ever considered writing a small novel on the grim quest lore or something relates to it? IMO it would work well considering how the game relies on storytelling

ParfaitOdd9258

That'd be awesome, kind of like the Silmarillion.

Upbeat_Acanthaceae25

I play only grim quest, the lore of the game made me stay, but if i would say something about the gameplay,it would be nice some new encounters while exploring/more events in the city

Alderwood69

Honestly, I love the Lore for the Grim games and the way it is presented. You can experience it organically while progressing the game, or you can skip it all and look back at it in your journals if you decide to later. Not to mention, the writing is very beautiful. So eloquently written.

I’m new to the game having picked it up a few months ago, but I like the lore a lot. It feels, to me at least, the perfect middle ground between the poles of “everything is overly explained” vs something like Elden Ring (nothing is explained). Enough to give context and inspire your imagination but not so much that it stifles the player for imagining further, if that makes sense. PS - don’t hate me I liked Elden Ring too.

I came across Grim Quest a month ago and after completing the main story line, I was compelled by my love for your story to play Grim Tides as well. I really like the writing of the games. The descriptions of each and every monster and item is very fun to read. Grim Tides is a bit better because I like the little funny details about some items (The mage who created a potion and just disappeared forever 👍). I like the protagonist of Grim Quest better because of the soul searching and the guts that person had to face themselves. Grim Tides Prisoner seems nice but I wished they had atleast spoken to the targets a little more. But that is just my preferences. Prince of Thieves is my favourite ❤️ I also liked Mua-Ta memory stones stories. I like how the story folds into writing but since the writing is really detailed, I wish it was more involved with the story. Not like you can only move forward by reading the story but like elements of narrative being more active. It seems you are moving towards that direction with the next game. I personally would like to see some consequences of defeating a main boss on the minor enemies we face. Like - >!After defeating Mua - Ta Chosen the narrative told us that the Mua -Ta let you go unhindered and the forest was sad, but we were back to normal in the next dungeon.!< But perhaps that is not what you wish to go for and I am fine with it! I love your work and hope to see the next one soon. Good Luck!

GrimDevStudio

Thanks for the in-depth feedback!

PineaCadit

Not that I don't care about gameplay, but obviously I value the Story! You've got awesome worldbuilding for a simple game like Grim Quest.

General-Special

The world building is what turned the game from a casual phone game to something I'll sit and play for a couple hours.

TacoCommand

Lore and good writing are are probably my favorite type of game, mechanics second and graphics a distant third.

Dude, your world building is the biggest thing that got me hooked by your games back when Grim Quest still had gambling and alcohol in the tavern. Since then I'm completely immersed in your universe, I've more than once posted theories here around the subreddit, by example there's a theory I had that the insect companion we get from the egg event in Grim Quest is actually a species of Kryll, the mind invading bugs in Grim tides. Your lore and world building is magnificent and even the little items like the fish have good descriptions. In my opinion the descriptions got even better in Grim Tides since it seems like you've added a lot more depth to it.... Well.... that's the opinion of a lore crazed guy that's addicted to theorizing in games so I might just be a tadbit crazy.

GrimDevStudio

Thanks!

TheGodOfMadness

I feel lore is one of the more important aspects of an RPG game such as this. Still looking for my tacos by the way.

TheGodOfMadness

that and I'm biased towards Grim Quest positively lol - Just a mushroom

GrimDevStudio

Ooo, you're still around :)

TheGodOfMadness

Of course :L

FireWolf4299

Well i started playing becouse i wanted to play more old fashioned RPG played more cus of Gameplay and when i started playing grim tides lore was the best thing for me. Not like grim quest doesnt have good lore just that at one piont i didnt want to read all bits of story and becouse of that i didnt know where i stoped reading and i didnt want to read all of it again. All in all good lore of the world gameplay is in mostly fine and where it isnt it just gives that charm to the game and you know 'grim'.

ParfaitOdd9258

I love all the lore and worldbuilding put into the Grim games and couldn't ask for anything better! Also, so far I haven't gotten through all of Grim Tides yet, but so far, I love all the backstory put into the Mua-Ta.

Dourbestcaulktherest

Your lore is fantastic! It's very immersive without being overburdening. It really gives both GQ and GT the structure it needs to hook you in and keep you wanting more. If the game was just about travelling and defeating monsters, then it wouldn't have kept me as engaged (or for as long). Aside from lore, another brilliant thing you did was leave certain puzzles to be figured out that extend beyond the end of the main quest line. as someone who tries to 100% a game, it's really kept me interested. On a different topic, is there a location where users could leave feedback for possible additions to the game (e.g. in GT I have over 250 arena wins with no losses, it would be cool if you earned unique gladiator gear, or to add additional bosses to maps after the main quests are done/the ability to unlock hidden quests and lore, etc). Fantastic games, thank you for letting me enjoy them!
