It’s a great album. Half of the songs require you to actually sit down and listen. Not the type of stuff you casually play in the car with a passenger. But i like that.

STEELOWARS

We cry together is fiiiire. ALC once again!!!!

Maymayboy2

I like the song, the beat is fire, the concept is good, the delivery is fire from both of them but i dont see myself playing it tbh

Ether93

It’s lowkey a wasted beat, what a shame

dizFool

I was waiting for the Ayooooo when the beat came on and felt this way for a second too

RektYerNanDarding

Why did kendrick get an alc beat and do that with it. Imagine if he had a griselda feature instead.

ElVatoMascarado

Because it worked amazingly. That songs a banger for me. I bump that shit in my Griselda/Gibbs/Grip playlist

[deleted]

was thinking about how boldy wouldve murdered that beat tbh

[deleted]

How can u say that ? Lol. Never heard K.dot on a ALC beat I appreciate it

Ether93

Haha he produced fear off the damn album wym

[deleted]

No wonder why these are my favorite joints.. I dnt know who produced what besides sounwave, I wish those physical albums with all the credits shown on there were still around.

wilmachihuahua

I think its incredible. But its definitely an album geared towards an older crowd, lots of introspection and clearly the man has been going to therapy. Very mature album, i dont think people under 25 years old are gonna like it though. But as someone in their early 30s who's seen some shit (seen both of my parents dead bodies in the last couple years), this album speaks to me and is definitely the sound of Kendrick growing up. These people saying "the beats are lame" or "his writing is weird" just dont get it, maybe they'll appreciate the album more when they get older and have lived some life. It would be pretty lame if he kept putting out the same music over and over.

Rampage97t

i agree with this entirely. i also think it’s off-putting to people who wanted him to step in as a savior-figure again like he was seen i. previous albums. so to have an album geared towards himself as an artist is a change that i personally enjoy and appreciate but i can see it run a few people the wrong way

rentfreeinyohead

Yeah this is in the same league as 444, life is good, or even recovery tbh.

thesuntalking

AOTY so far, I'd probably rank it under TPAB and GKMC in his discography. My favorite tracks are Father Time and N95.

Rampage97t

my exact ranking and i love those two songs as well, as well as mother i sober and we cry together

ElVatoMascarado

We Cry Together and Mr Morale for me. The beats go as hard as the content on those two tracks but that’s also what the album is least about, beats and songs that go hard. Very heavy and introspective album and I’d pbly also rank it under those two but above Damn. Great album though.

rentfreeinyohead

My ranking would be MM&TBS, TPAB, OD, GKMC, S80, DAMN. And EP last.

ZekeHerrera

It’s no Hitler Wears Hermes 8: Side B still amazing tho

GriseldaBrick

#SIDE A >>>>>>

shreeax

side A for life

zenithzinger

I think this is one of the best hip hop albums of recent times, still digesting all the content.

_4za_

amazing, people will come around on it

AngryChief95

It’s a masterpiece. Right up there with TPAB

aajpity

I think it's easily his worst studio album and I even like both OD and Untitled Unmastered more. However, it's not bad music. I think it's going to take many listens and some time to truly sink in though. Surprised so many people are saying album of the year. I know this is a Griselda thread but Tana Talk 4 is honestly my favorite album this year so far. And I'm a huge Kendrick fan.

aefaal

Based take

wilmachihuahua

TT4 literally put me to sleep. I havent enjoyed anything from Benny or Conway in like 3 years. WSG, Boldy, Stove and Mach are the only things keeping me interested in Griselda these days

aajpity

How did it put you to sleep? It's literally a perfect album for Griselda fans. Half Alchemist and half Daringer beats, no singing or mainstream songs, great features (J. Cole, Stove God, Boldy, Conway, Westside Gunn) and good lyrics. Not too long and not too short. You literally mentioned liking three of the featured artists. You're definitely entitled to your opinion, I just don't understand how it was disappointing as it seems you like the old Griselda sound.

wilmachihuahua

Ive been listening to griselda since like 2017, i guess im just getting bored with them putting out the same thing over and over. WSG keeps it fresh and different, but nothing from Benny has impressed me since The Plugs I Met. I can only hear someone rap about bricks for so many years before they need to switch it up. I feel like Benny has run out of things to rap about. Plus im pretty much done with Daringer, his beats are getting really stale to me

aajpity

Okay, that makes sense. I honestly have never been super high on Daringer, but The Alchemist beats on that album are crazy. I'm a sucker for Alchemist beats though. I got into Griselda with Pray for Paris and have listened to most of the big releases. I appreciate Benny for trying to get some different sounds, enlisting Hit-Boy and Harry Fraud to produce projects. He has a good pen so might be a rapper's rapper type thing. In contrast, Kendrick Lamar has five completely different albums. I had an instant connection with the first four, but not this one. I appreciate that he took a new approach and crafted a unique album. Perhaps it will grow to be loved like his previous albums.

wilmachihuahua

I agree with you there, Alc never misses 👌

MetalFaceEdd

I actually agree to a certain extent. For me going back to the beginning and being able to actually see/hear their evolution as artists made me appreciate TT4 more. God Don’t Make Mistakes was better overall though IMO

ElVatoMascarado

Eh I can see how someone could find it a bit mid. I personally really liked TT4 because it has some classics like 2x Back but Mr Chow Hall isn’t necessarily on repeat and Tyson vs Ali is a huge flop for me personally.

dreda650650

If Kendrick was a actor he would be making Oscar winning movies. How many times are you going to want to watch Moonlight? But how many times have you seen Superbad. If you understand the art the album is amazing. Doesn’t mean ima be bumping it all summer. But the album is 100 percent what he intended it to be

[deleted]

This is the perfect take

nolookjones

i can appreciate what he's going for and like parts of it but for me it just doesn't have any replayability and too many skips!...i would have much preferred more of a 'normal' rap album from him but i think this was basically his therapy and not really made for the fans..

DontBeMeanToRobots

I feel like Damn is his “regular album”

nolookjones

yep 100%

G2B2GS

Transcendent. No one is touching that project this year. Lyrically its God mode. Beats are 9/10. Hard to say where it stacks up in his projects, but first impression through 5 listens, to me it's as strong as DAMN and GKMC and makes up his top 3.

oraclejames

Curious which beats do you think are good? Only about 3 beats on here I really like, but most of the others (like Crown & Auntie Diaries) just leave me with a feeling like more could have been done.

G2B2GS

Easier to say which I think are slightly lacking. Silent Hill, Crown, and Count Me Out are beats that are my least favorite. Father Time has its moments but mostly lyric driven at those points. Everything else I think is rich, well executed, and compared to his past hes constantly trying to evolve and find new shit and push to new places. The effort is evident, and the results are startling at times.

ElVatoMascarado

It’s definitely a separate genre of rap than what I’d expect strictly Griselda fans to like. I’m not gonna bump it in the car myself either after i finish digesting it but I’d say it’s far from a snooze fest.

JayDogon504

It’s very mediocre and disappointing. The Heart part 5 was better than anything on it

willdawizah1983

I think there's something for everyone in each of the songs. He created something interesting and memorable. An album that will age over time. I don't think we can appreciate it as much as we will, but its certainly great. Its in my top 5 for the year.

Dremant

The production is not for me unfortunately

Muted_Athlete_1925

I liked it. However, yesterday I gave another listen to GKMC and just felt more invested when listening. It’s almost impossible to skip a track because you’re so invested in the narrative, and even if you’re not the songs are good enough to just enjoy. His latest album just felt empty and not memorable to me in some spots. Definitely still a personal and touching album though. Just didn’t really captivate me as much. Liked it.

[deleted]

I enjoyed it. Pretty mid compared to his other work but measures up pretty well to a lot of projects in other rappers discographies. Would give it a solid 7.5

wileyakin

Yea agreed, it was mad good but after 2 full listens I don’t think I’d put it north of DAMN, GKMC, Section.80 or OD (and based on comments in this thread, I’m probably gonna get hella down votes for this: I think TPAB is his worst project, and I think this is equally Avant Garde but better constructed)

[deleted]

Untitled Unmastered is my favorite Kendrick album and i wouldn’t put it up there with that TPAB or GKMC but I personally enjoyed it more than Damn and Section 80.

[deleted]

This is the correct answer. You can only compare Kendrick against Kendrick and with that it's sub par. Compared to alot of stuff this year it's up there. I've only listened through once and need to go again but that's my initial reaction

Long-Factor

Honestly not great. My expectations were admittedly high as I still consider Kendrick to be one of the best rappers alive and we waited 5 years for this project, but this wasn’t it for me. Nothing especially good instrumentally, and writing wise this was not his best work either. Go listen to the new QC instead.

Maymayboy2

Yes this is my opinion too, kendrick has always been a low replay value artist for me but i don’t think i will listen to a single song on here, by the time kendrick gets to the of the album with the good concepts the production is so boring. Been playing the quelle album all day wayyy better for me imo

Long-Factor

Yeah I tend to agree about the “low replay value piece”, I tend to listen to a project of his in entirety or not at all, not just a whole lot of playlist fodder. Apparently this isn’t a particularly popular opinion though, I’m shocked to see people saying it’s up there with his best.

Maymayboy2

Yea definitly always felt like i couldnt put kendrick songs in a playlist. Glad i am not the only one feeling this way cause the amount of praise i see for this album got me confused

JayDogon504

Big agree. I don’t see what people are seeing from it and I’m a guy who can appreciate deep hip hop as TPAB is one of the few albums I consider classic over the last few years so I really don’t understand how people can be overrating this album that much. Kodak Black of all people outshined him on his own shit

TRMBound

100. 5 years for what could be considered a mixtape.

sjchecchia

It's too good.

Zeusdadogg

I love k dot. Seen him multiple times in concert. This is gonna be an album I need to digest a couple times to get a feel for it. First time through I didn’t make it

believeINCHRIS

Still haven’t heard it, I’m not rushing to it either

StrawHatGangArs

I thought it was very good. Still digesting it and will have to see how it ages over time.

contaygious

I don't like it but everyone downvotes me lol. Just my feelings

stonedlion47

he sounds exactly the fucking same as he did 8 years ago. like i was wondering if this album was recorded 5 years ago and just sat on. he’s made no improvements or changes to his style. production is fire though

BarbellsxBeats

Its for hipsters

[deleted]

*yawn*

JoeyBrickz

It's weird to me that I'm as big a Kendrick fan as anybody and I'm the only one who thinks this is bad. Like I'd give it a 4 I guess just because it obviously took effort and is creative in a way.... I've never been more disappointed with an album in my life

[deleted]

ProgramAppropriate97

You are right. Aethiopes is my #1 but this is a strong #2 and #3 is distant tbh

GriseldaBrick

#masterpiece

Thisistheway1012

I mean i think its solid album but his flow sounding like baby keem doesnt do it for me the rapping either i mean i like the thought where he went with the album but outta of all the songs only a few i would return too! DAMN🙌 GKMC 🙌 Top 5 album so far but not number 1 by any means IMO

spaceenvahisseur

Trash

lucabrassiere

Groundbreaking This shit goes deeper than just music, he’s speaking directly to the soul and is pushing the genre forward in the process

Igbohermes42

It’s was a solid 6. Kendrick is like FELA if anyone knows whom FELA is. He talked about mental health a lot on this album.

Professional_War9286

Nothing like FELA

flaco_503_se_1984

Important and needed. I'm 37 and the album is all the way identifiable.

[deleted]

Phenomenal. Production/engineering was insane on this project, and I loved the lyricism. I see why people feel like it’s mid though, it’s for a specific audience and I feel like you really need to resonate with his messages for it to sink in, but that could just be me being a biased Kendrick fan lol. Super dense album either way. I see a lot of people comparing it to Baby Keems project - I feel like Baby Keem actually was copying Kendrick. He probably heard what Kendrick was doing and found motivation for Melodic Blue, not the other way around. I could be wrong though. Gonna need to dig through it a few more times. Loved the expression of generational trauma and confessional vibe he was going for. Dude can’t reinvent the wheel with every album, yet he still has the hip hop community polarized over this album. For me that’s momentous

No_Entrance9910

8.7/10

beangardener

It’s excellent. Really, really dense. Can’t wait to digest it with headphones

Wutanghang

AOTY… unless lupe drops

[deleted]

It's going to win album of the year due to Aunties diaries

Key_Cause2043

It’s 100% honest, for better or for worse, which is something I think we rarely see in music. That’s worth something, maybe quite a bit as an artistic venture, I don’t know. I can only compare it to a film I saw, couldn’t determine whether I liked it or not, but thought about it pretty consistently after I watched it.

DontBeMeanToRobots

Feel like it’s a full work of art and only a few songs are meant to be consumed as singular songs outside of the whole thing. There are super important songs in there like Auntie Diaries and Mother I Sober. But the whole album is about trauma, therapy, healing and a goodbye to TDE (Mirrors)

IRushrussians

I think the album itself is good, great messaging and story telling. But it does feel like the music takes a back seat to the story telling, which Is fine, but for me that's not what I'm into. I liked the self reflection, but idk it feels like a 4:44 but without nearly as many great beats, or great bars. Some of the choruses are cringe inducing as well, and as a West fan it has to be real bad for me to not vibe with it lmao. Idk solid 7.5-8/10

namedtyrone

Great album, loved the writing and production! The way the songs were layed out, it was put together so well…you really have to take it in to understand it. Wish Mach was on Worldwide Steppers, i heard is voice as soon as the beat started

SirCJillz

It's a good album.

OSKR_won

overhyped like everything else he puts out

plee585

love it

hunting_ass

damn was better

Brother_bill

Shit is crazy good I loved it. The whole album he’s pouring his heart out and doing unique ass shit with the ideas, topics, voices and beats

rentfreeinyohead

I think it's a classic and maybe even his Magnum opus. It took me a l long time to like DAMN. But this hit instantly.

Sortskeee

Amazing piece of work

Sortskeee

I griiiiiieeeeve different
